A Tribute to Oscar Patrick: The First Great WVU Receiver
In September 2020 I ran across a short obituary of Oscar Patrick, a man described as a WVU wide receiver "great." I'd never heard of Patrick, even though I was born and raised in West Virginia and went to school there; and I was curious: who was this unknown (to me) former Mountaineer described as great.
So I did some research, and dived into my collection of WVU highlight videos going back to the early 1960s, and pulled out all of Oscar's highlights that I could find. The resulting collection shows a young man coming out of a segregated school system in southern West Virginia and becoming a star on the State's flagship football program.
His coaches were Jim Carlen and Bobby Bowden, and with Mike Sherwood throwing the ball to him, Oscar had a good sophomore year, leading the team in receiving yardage, and exploded for 50 catches, 770 yards, and 5 touchdowns in his junior year. At Penn State, he had 10 catches for 190 yards and two touchdowns -- a true Beast Mode performance up at the #3 Nittany Lions' Happy Valley.
However, in 1969, his senior year, Oscar injured his knee at Tulane, and it was the end of his football career. He got tryouts with the Redskins and Bengals, but his knee couldn't handle the strain. His potential was never fully realized in college, and the injury was such that he couldn't heal up and play at the next level.
So here's my modest offering of a tribute to Oscar Patrick -- the "Big O" -- in the hope that we'll remember him a little better in the future. He had some catch-and-runs that would look really nice in the stadium team video.
I hope you enjoy it.

Five Critical Stiffarms
มุมมอง 1704 ปีที่แล้ว
The ball carrier's coming around the end, and right there is the enemy reaching out to take him down. The ball carrier reaches out with his free hand, locks his elbow, and applies palm of hand to face. The attacker goes down, and the way to the end zone is clear. Touchdown! Here are five examples of this technique one even features the rare Double Stiffarm! They all led to wins, too. Enjoy.

WVU Football Top Ten Last-Second Wins

[OK, OK, stop yelling at me! Im going to add Grier's 2-pt conversion to beat Texas... into the #2 spot, because nothing beats that 1994 Pitt game. ] A totally subjective, no logic used, I-just-happen-to-like-these-plays Top Ten list of crazy endings to Mountaineer football wins that came on the final play at the last second.. Well, some aren't so crazy, but most ARE. Also, there's an Easter egg...

Why, with just the expressions on Humphrey Bogart and Claire Trevor's faces, can you tell that they know that Rocco is afraid? Great acting in a fantastic film. The reality was that Gangsters in those days controlled large parts of cities thanks to the happy corruption of the authorities. My second favourite Humphery Bogart film after The Maltese Falcon.

I remember being back in Highschool in 2007 and when the 100th meeting of the Backyard Brawl was coming up, FSN Pittsburgh was highlighting the Backyard Brawl over the years and they talked about this 1994 game and Don Nehlen said it was a game that both him and Johnny Majors absolutely hated because of all the mental lapses from blocked field goals, interception returns, blown coverages etc...

that is back in the day when you were allowed to hand the ball forward off a blocked punt and run it in for a touchdown... the rules have changed now, that is illegal ... the guy has to be behind you to hand the ball off... but the forward pass was legal back then off a blocked punt , he just choose to hand it forward... Miami got away with a lot back then .

The effects from this film are AMAZING!! This is 1937, just ten years after the last silent films were made! This is a brilliant movie, really sad how just a handful of islanders survive while the rest of the community perished. Why is it films from the 20s to 60s just knew how to entertain us

This reminds me of a running back in the early 1980s named Tom Gray. I thought wow, we really have a great back now. He made a cut and tore his ACL. Was never the same. In the era before the arthroscopic knee surgery and sports medicine we have had for awhile, great talents like Patrick and Gray, just disappeared. Thank you for posting this. I know I watched this guy as a child, but I didn't remember him. Well deserved tribute.

All American Dale Farley hailing from Sparta, Tennessee played on the 1968 through 1970 WVU football teams before entering the draft and being drafted by the Miami Dolphins. He was selected to play in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, and was named to the All-East and All-South teams. The Mountaineers posted a record of 25-7 during his career. Farley was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame and is a member of the WVU All-Time Team from 1970-79. The late Dale Farley was from Sparta, Tennessee and a tremendous three-year linebacker from 1968-70, playing for coaches Jim Carlen and Bobby Bowden. A native of Sparta, Tennessee, Farley teamed with All-America middle guard Carl Crennel during his junior year in 1969 to give the Mountaineers the nation’s 12th-best defense, allowing just 241 yards per game. West Virginia, that year, held four opponents to a touchdown or less and produced shutout victories over VMI and William & Mary on the way to a 10-1 record and a 14-3 victory over ACC champion South Carolina in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. Farley was named a First Team All-American by The Sporting News in 1970 and was selected in the third round of the 1971 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins (74th pick overall). He played one season for the Dolphins in 1971 before being traded to Buffalo, where he joined Mountaineer teammate Jim Braxton with the Bills. Farley played two years there and spent one season playing for the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League before returning to work on his family farm in Sparta. Farley passed away on June 13, 2019, in Cookeville, Tennessee from complications of renal failure. He is survived by his wife, Karen who he met at WVU and son, Brandon, along with grandchildren Branson Farley, Dalton Stallings and Kaytlyn Franklin. Farley was preceded in death by his daughter, Brittany Ann Farley Johnson.
