1st International Rivian R1S Road Trip: NJ to Montreal for F1. Charging on Tesla, EA, and Evolve NY

We took our 6 month old Rivian R1S up across the border to Canada for the Canadian Grand Prix, crossing into another country for the first time ever in an EV. We didn't know what to expect with parking, charging, and payments and despite some challenges, we learned a ton and had a great trip. Come along for the first half, our drive up from NJ to Montreal in pouring rain in which we compared Tesla and EA / EvolveNY charging infrastructure, observe how much charging has changed along the I87 corridor in a few years since we got our first EV, and handle issues with charging in another country.

Yes! I did drive by the offices and talked to them about visiting for a tour but because it was the weekend, there wasn’t much to see or show. Hopefully there will be an opportunity to showcase more of what they are doing in the future.

Are the local chargers here in Montreal not Rivian compatible? I am picking my R1S up on Tuesday. Forest green like yours.

Very nice and congratulations!
We found some L2 chargers that worked but had really bad luck with the fast chargers around Montreal being damaged or unusable. It was never an emergency but I was surprised there wasn’t as much infrastructure as I expected.

Are most of your long trips done in Conserve mode?

Yes, usually. We use it only for longer road trips though so that we aren’t doing too much uneven wear on the tires and rear motors. I don’t think it really makes a huge difference but there’s no real reason to use it on a daily basis.
