No this is not cold starting cold starting a steam locomotive just consist of waiting hours for the boiler to heat up all of these engines were already warmed up

Good point. My question, though, is as follows, and please forgive me for sounding potentially ignorant: Do railroad crews have to make sure there's at least enough coal and water left in the locomotive at the end of the day to ensure that it can be adequately steamed up the next morning?

@@Stussmeister It really depends on the schedule. If they're running the next day, they leave a small fire going. If they need to do a washout, then they have to drain the boiler and drop the fires completely. Now, a regular steam shop would fill the boilers with pre-heated water to speed up the process of getting the locomotive ready. For Union Pacific's biggest locomotives, getting up to operating temperature from cold is a multi-day process.

I LIKE THAT TRAIN WITH THE BELL INSTEAD OF THE AIR HORN AND DIESEL ENGINE i was told these things were put out of business back in 1960s because the diesel went on line in 1956 i had no idea these were still going strong like were back in the 1930s
These are not mainline Railroads but more like Tourist railways
Lots of comments lamenting these old steam locomotives, but remember some of the best of them had only 6% thermal efficiency. About 1/6 that of a typical diesel of the same drawbar pull.
So nostalgia that we can go for it

It’s mostly steam. These locomotives aren’t the issue, it’s the thousands of power plants and cars burning fossil fuels every day.

1:50 Why so much pressure release?
That is a.real cold start where the boiler is hot but the cylinders are cold. There are drain cocks on the bottom of the cylinders and they are left open for a while, venting a good portion of steam so that condensed water can blow out and not accumulate in the cylinders which can damage them. Once the cylinders are warmed up, the engineer will close the drain cocks, often with a linkage from the cab.

oil has more uses than steam
Diesel engines use less than a third of the fuel as a steam locomotive does, and the maintenance is much lower.
Steam is a visual sight of inefficient combustion.
