Thomas Jane as the Punisher was one of the best castings in pre-Disney Marvel. I feel like he’s kind of hidden from the spotlight now but he’s still working..
Excuse me while I throw up. The Tom Jane Punisher is mediocre at best. And Dirty Laundry is a fucking insult to the character, made by people who DO NOT understand Frank Castle AT ALL and liked by people who understand him just as poorly.
Yes. I love that film. Even though there's unrelatable aspects of his character for most people. He still feels extremely relatable and realistic in the ways that are important.
Totally agree. I didn't feel anything while watching Silent Night. I almost felt like there was something wrong with me. Glad I just rented Silent Night, but I bought Nobody. What that film had but this film didn't was heart. Every middle aged guy could relate to the guy.
I wondered during the movie if they were both supposed to release last year but they pushed this movie back to avoid brand confusion. All the dates of SILENT NIGHT were 2021 - 2022 which I thought was a little odd. Yeah, just found this on Wikipedia: "Principal photography began in April 2022 in Mexico City. Filming wrapped on May 17, 2022." So that explains it.
Hard Boiled will forever be my favorite Woo movie, its a bullet ridden masterpiece. The Killer from 89 is a close second. It has a great story and of course those iconic Woo action sequences. Hard Target would be third, it's my favorite JCVD movie. I've always loved the premise and atmosphere of that one. A Better Tomorrow 1&2, and Bullet In The Head were also great.
Completely agree. Although I love all John Woo movies, "Hard boiled" is so "lighthearted" in comparison to his other works that it almost feels optimistic. It's a feel good power fantasy movie.
The Thomas Jane punisher is underrated as all hell. Good stand alone pre mcu comic book movie. The director's cut with the black and white opening is a great addition to it that adds to the comic book flavor.
My favorite and really only comic book hero is The Punisher. In my humble opinion, the Thomas Jane Punisher is not very good at all. The Punisher needs a movie that really just gets back to basics of what the Punisher is. What he looks like. And source material with no added bs.

The Woo movie I grew up with, and was among the first my parents had me watch for my first Rated R movies, was Broken Arrow. Such a good movie, seeing the BTS movie on how it was made down to the small details, and the cast was awesome, they all brought their characters to life, especially Travolta whom you slowly see his fall apart as he loses more and more control over the situation as the movie goes on. Plus, Samantha Mathis ❤
lucky you! at least you got something from this movie cause it was pure garbage, typical tripe, nothing new except for him not speaking. Very boring for a Johon Woo film.
The Killer and Hardboiled are my 1 & 2 which everyone here has also covered. #3 is A Better Tomorrow 2 mainly for the rice scene in the restaurant (“You don't like my rice? What's wrong with with it? It's beautiful to me, but to you, rice is nothing... to us, it's just like my father and mother. Don't f- with my family. If you have any dignity, apologize to the rice RIGHT NOW!”), the whole twin thing & the bloodbath of a fight at the end.
Love hard boiled, love face /off, but THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! For saying Broken Arrow, I absolutely loved that movie growing up, who knew that John Travolta could be the best bad guy ever!? Also I enjoyed Silent Night as well. I love your reviews been watching for over a year and your always spot on. We have the same taste, and I appreciate it.
I still gotta give props to Woo for taking this on. You're right Up did it best in those 10 minutes, but that wasn't an entire feature length. The fact this movie sticks are strictly as it can to its premise deserves praise in my book. I thought it was a fun movie, no where near Woo's best, but even diet John Woo is still John Woo.
What does that even mean? Apart from a bit of senseless killing at the end that flic was utter boredom for the first 60 mins and it didn't get that much better after that.
Hey, another laserdisc fan! Ive got a special edition of The Killer, myself. I’ve still got my working double-sided player! No other way to watch my REAL Star Wars trilogy, before George started playing with them.
How do the characters know when they've been hit by a bullet without a squib? That's your cue! Honestly, I'm so sick of CGI that I'm very picky about the new movies I watch and tend to dip into the vault much more frequently to relive the real, old-school filmmaking.
@@everythingisawesome2903 it's in one of his most recent videos called "Is This As Bad As Everyone is Saying" (about the movie Wish) at around 4:58 in the video
John Woo made some of the greatest action classics in History…in Asia. There’s not one of his American movies that is even remotely as good. I wasn’t holding any anticipation for this and your review just affirmed it.
It depends on what you mean by his "American movies". His style has cleanly translated over to the States without issue. It's always going to be over the top. Woo invented "Gun-Fu" and the Wachowski's themselves credit him incessantly with informing much of the core fighting style and cinematographic flourishes on the Matrix. Max Payne cribbed whole elements from Woo and it worked incredibly well within a totally different medium. I'm not sure what you were expecting when he made action movies in America and how it'd be any different.
@@0hMyGandhi You bring up people who are influenced and/or ripped him off but having nothing to say about the actual movies he made for the American studio system. It’s very obvious what is meant by his “American movies”.
@@Skoora I put that in quotes because I question the underlying logic. Over the top action, doves and slow-mo is Woo's whole shtick. Expecting anything different based on where his movies are made doesn't make sense to me. Some styles need to be tamped down. Like when Jean-Pierre Jeunet goes from Amélie to Alien: Resurrection, but for Woo, it translated super well because (especially in the late 90's) everything was dialed to 11. TNT was a network dedicated to movies like Face/Off, Con Air and The Rock. I enjoy his movies he made here in the states. They are fun and inventive and super stylish genre-fare that may now seem absurd by today's standards. But again, movies like John Wick have proven that style can absolutely trump script when the core vision is solid.
@@0hMyGandhi You’re making assumption and extrapolations that have nothing to do with what I said and certainly never inferred. I just said his American movies paled in comparison to his Asian movies. If you want to give essay’s on what you think about it, go ahead but leave me out of it.
@@Skoora*assumptions if you're going to be a pretentious arsehole at least learn how to spell properly...And by the way you obviously were inferring what the other dude was calling you out for. Just take the L.
Actually the real reason why the movie doesn't have dialogue is because John Woo was kicked out of the editing room and he took it with him the CEOs didn't know that until it was way too late 😂
Laser disc? I appreciate you, sir. Considering I haven't seen a John woo movie in what seems like decades, I'll probably add this to my hard drive at some point regardless. Not like I don't have a ton of other mildly disappointing movies I still want to watch.
I finally got around to seeing this last night. It would have been great if it weren’t for the couple off to my side talking throughout the entire film, or the three guys in front of my pulling their phones out every five minutes to record scenes or whatever else they were doing. I’m low key disappointed Jeremy didn’t do his review without dialogue.
It's real weird someone didn't use a silent action film to also have more character dive. It's so easy to show a character rather than just spout exposition
Just gonna drop some love right here for Thomas Jane's Punisher. The rumble in that kitchen where suddenly strikes and punches feel real-world is Hitchcock North by Northwest level cinema. Jeremy you aren't alone on this one, bro. 👍
Just finished watching it at home. A very solid 7.5/10 from me. I know many people are turned off to this film due to the lack of dialogue, but it didn’t bother me in the slightest. It’s the ultimate example of “show, don’t tell.” Having said this, I do understand why so many didn’t enjoy the film. While it’s far from perfect, I have to give respect to John Woo for taking a radical approach to how the story is told.
You need to watch "All is Lost" for a film devoid of any dialogue once the opening narration is done. One line and one word is all Robert Redford spoke in that film. There is nothing radical about the approach to this obnoxiously stupid film. Except to people who don't watch many films other than scrolling through tons of Netflix shit and saying oh I'm bored I'll watch this and fall asleep 15 minutes in.
Besides the obvious two Woo Movies, Once a Thief, what a joy of a movie it is. Forever Green. "No one can't safe you" has the most shortest list of dialogues. 3 words and that's it. Superbly engaging movie.
Gonna be honest, even though the premise has been done, I'm actually curious to see it simply because of the no dialogue. Although it is strange that everyone doesn't talk. Still I think I'll see it because sometimes I just like me some good action set pieces. Especially around Christmas time. Also, cholesterol... that was very funny, Jeremy. Thanks
You'll barely get it because most of the movie is "white guy gets his life destroyed by evil Mexicans" with superb John Woo action sprinkled in between
The only John Woo film I've seen so far is "Mission: Impossible 2", which was good but when watching it in a marathon with the other installments made it stand out as very stylized (a lot more slow motion than I remembered), which can be good or bad depending on your mood at the time 😁. One of these years I'll check out his other films, and keep an eye out for the doves that I've heard make regular cameo appearances. Also: I agree, the opening sequence of "Up" is one of the best examples of making everyone cry without anyone saying a word.
@@WargodFilms 😆 Not sure, since I've only seen "Mission: Impossible 2" that he directed and that's already over 20 years old (!). That would be neat if they also show up in "Silent Night".
I can still remember seeing Hard Boiled in the theater in Boston in ‘92. It was so good, it rendered current, American action cinema dead to me. Then followed an insatiable hunger for Hong Kong cinema and boy was there some great stuff. Not only was the action great, the way they portrayed men, with their friendships and honor and loyalty as well as the evil sons of bitches. They seemed to “boil” down the action movie into its essence and do away with the bloat and exposition dumps so common in American movies. The characters would show how they felt and what they were thinking more through action, rather than talking. Even though there was always at least one chat between hero and villain about how they could have been brothers…lol
I never had a problem with it. Always liked it. The original MI is actually my least favorite of the series. I still like it, it's just last on the list.
The no talking could've been solved by adding partial hearing loss to the character where he can hear everything but speech and the movie exists through his lens of hearing
I'd LOVE for you to upload a video reviewing The Fall of the House of Usher! I absolutely LOVED this series, and I would love to hear your thoughts on it
The backstory didn’t really have to be THAT LONG bc I actually fell asleep in the theatres waiting for the actual action to happen. 🤣 Also, the cop going in without backup, really good with guns BUT DID NOT wear a vest??! 🤷🏻♀️
Between The Killer and Hardboiled those were my intro to John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat, also I swear I remember an interview with John Woo years ago when he was asked about the whole reloading thing and I believe his reply was why show reload, take away from action. I can't find the interview unfortunately.
I was curious what you’d think of it. I thought maybe I missed something, ‘cause I could not get into this movie either. I went in expecting a bloody revenge romp but didn’t even get that. Bummer.
Do you remember the movie Peppermint from 2018 starring Jennifer Garner? It has a similar premise to this movie, and also takes place during the holidays.

Hardboiled and The Killer are my two favorites cuz I’m basic af. But no apologies. I could watch them both on repeat.
Sounds like a must watch then.
The Killer, Hard Boiled and Faceoff. 3 amazing flicks.
I don't know who hates The Punisher. I still love it.
I hadn't herd anything about this movie. I wasn't going to see it anyway. Thank you for saving me the money
How do the characters know when they've been hit by a bullet without a squib? That's your cue! Honestly, I'm so sick of CGI that I'm very picky about the new movies I watch and tend to dip into the vault much more frequently to relive the real, old-school filmmaking.
The takeaway from this video, Jeremy is reviewing Godzilla minus one, was not expecting that
“Hard Target” is my favorite.
My kind of humorous reviews. I love that 😁
I'm gonna watch more of your video for sure 😄
This movie looked like a ton of fun from the trailer.
Would love to see a review of Castlevania Nocturne!
Don't know if you already saw but Charlie/Moistcritikal/Penguinz0 recently said he really enjoys your videos, just thought it might be nice to know!
Jesus himself
Where did he said this? Is there a video or something in his channel where he said that?
@@everythingisawesome2903 it's in one of his most recent videos called "Is This As Bad As Everyone is Saying" (about the movie Wish) at around 4:58 in the video
I was actually really impressed with the film, had never seen a John Woo movie before this one, minor nitpicks aside I really liked Silent Night!
1. The Killer 2. Hard-Boiled 3. A Better Tomorrow
3 favorite John Woo movies are Hard Boiled, the killer and Bullet in the head, all action classics.
Just watched a movie review about a movie I care nothing about. Liked . Subscribed.
Actually the real reason why the movie doesn't have dialogue is because John Woo was kicked out of the editing room and he took it with him the CEOs didn't know that until it was way too late 😂
Is that true
Huh ?
Laser disc? I appreciate you, sir. Considering I haven't seen a John woo movie in what seems like decades, I'll probably add this to my hard drive at some point regardless. Not like I don't have a ton of other mildly disappointing movies I still want to watch.
The script probably read more like a novel.
You've never tried to make any kind of film before lol
Just gonna drop some love right here for Thomas Jane's Punisher. The rumble in that kitchen where suddenly strikes and punches feel real-world is Hitchcock North by Northwest level cinema.
Jeremy you aren't alone on this one, bro. 👍
Just finished watching it at home. A very solid 7.5/10 from me. I know many people are turned off to this film due to the lack of dialogue, but it didn’t bother me in the slightest. It’s the ultimate example of “show, don’t tell.”
Having said this, I do understand why so many didn’t enjoy the film.
Thanks
You'll barely get it because most of the movie is "white guy gets his life destroyed by evil Mexicans" with superb John Woo action sprinkled in between
It’s pulled off very well.
Lmao he was infamous for the doves it was like his signature Hancock for his films your telling me he found a way to still use them til this day?
“Cholesterol.. the silent killer.” 😂 Jeremy, never change.
I love "Mission: Impossible II". There, I said it! Thank you, John Woo, for still making action movies.
Face/Off is a + JW film. 1990s.
That film is very underrated, I agree 100%!
I never had a problem with it. Always liked it. The original MI is actually my least favorite of the series. I still like it, it's just last on the list.
Always enjoy seeing your reviews, can't wait to hear your thoughts on Godzilla Minus One!
Here’s hoping u check out the new Godzilla movie 🙏
Edit: Just finished the video and very excited for tomorrow lmao
Top 3 John Woo films:
1. THE KILLER
2. A BETTER TOMORROW
3. FACE/OFF
The no talking could've been solved by adding partial hearing loss to the character where he can hear everything but speech and the movie exists through his lens of hearing
That’s sounds dumb to me.
The first ten minutes of Up were indeed genius. I cry like a sad hungry baby every time.
This film wasn't as bad as a lot of the reviews say it is. Shut your brain off and have fun...not every movie is required to be a masterpiece.
I'd LOVE for you to upload a video reviewing The Fall of the House of Usher! I absolutely LOVED this series, and I would love to hear your thoughts on it
Pass this and watch the movie SISU.
I need a “blue eyed samurai review”. I feel like it’s right up your alley as well.
Man this movie was so good. The way it was shot was like a John wick where he basically doesn’t talk.
You have really bad taste in movies, buddy.
Jeremy I love the Thomas Jane Punisher movie. Especially his sweet 1911s and the russian fight scene.
The backstory didn’t really have to be THAT LONG bc I actually fell asleep in the theatres waiting for the actual action to happen. 🤣
Also, the cop going in without backup, really good with guns BUT DID NOT wear a vest??! 🤷🏻♀️
Exactly , he went in solo in to a gang hq, made no sense , especially when other officers were in a shootout earlier in the movie
Between The Killer and Hardboiled those were my intro to John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat, also I swear I remember an interview with John Woo years ago when he was asked about the whole reloading thing and I believe his reply was why show reload, take away from action. I can't find the interview unfortunately.
Favorite John Woo movie isn't a Movie, its a Game. Stranglehold.
Chow Yun fat ah loved that game
I'm just in it for the action, John Woo, and the producers of John Wick. Can't wait to check it out this weekend.
It was a boring movie. Felt ripped off. Waste of time.
Every American movie is nothing more than a rippoff already just shut up will ya...
@@pipipupu5104 it my opinion. Just shut up will ya?
@@pipipupu5104 I felt ripped off having been subjected to wasting my time. Not saying the movie ripped off another movie.
Better tomorrow, Killer, Hard Boiled, Hard Target, Broken Arrow, Mission Impossible 2 and the game changing Face Off --- John Woo is the GOAT of action cinema.
Love all your reviews! For the record though, "high blood pressure" is the silent killer. 😂😂
Great spot on 'Up' there Jeremy, you called that for storytelling and empathy dead right.
I wonder if this is as good as Violent Night.
"We all saw the first 10 minutes of Up, we all wept!" Still hits me hard to this day.
