      you would be surprised how helpful neighbors can be. I had an upstairs neighbor knock on my door one day. I don't talk to anyone here, and I rarely am out and about. Turned out, he wanted to know if it was my garage just outside my unit. I said yes and he let me know he saw a large snake go in there under the door. He didn't know what kind of snake, but he knew it went inside and was big. Turned out after opening the door using the remote, I had 2 snakes in there all cuddled together right next to the door to my truck. If I did decide to go somewhere, i would have stepped right next to them with no idea they were there due to some cardboard scraps they were hiding under. Keep in mind this wasn't farmers helping farmers. This is in an apartment complex in San Antonio. Eventually pest control guy came and needed help with the snakes. Another neighbor helped him catch them even though he lives on the other side of the building upstairs. I met 3 neighbors in one day because they were concerned about a snake in my garage.

    I remember when I was really young, early 1970's; Right at dinner time our neighbor called in a panic; their barn was on fire and she couldn't get hold of her husband who was in town getting feed. My Dad and one of my older brothers dropped what they were eating, ran out the door, jumped in our stock truck and headed to the fire. The neighbors two tractors were in the burning barn. They got one started and out of danger. The other one wouldn't start so they wrapped a chain on it and drug it out as the barn started to collapse. There weren't any animals in the barn. The neighbor followed the fire trucks out to his farm. Since he had no idea it was his barn on fire he was just following to see where it was. Once the fire trucks, and the neighbor got there my Dad and brother came home, ate dinner then went about their day. The neighbors were very grateful to my Dad and brother.
    Then again, this is farm country it's what we do; help each other.

    I'm wicked glad that you guys got on that fire so quickly, and the loss was minimal. Prairie fires / grass fires are just one more risk that comes with farming. I started a grass fire when I was bull cooking for a road construction outfit - didn't mean to, of course. Boss said to use a 45 gal grease drum for a burning barrel. I put the thing on a dirt pile, because I'm smart enough not to put in the grass area. I threw a bunch of garbage paper in and lit it. So proud of myself. What I didn't realize is that the residual grease would melt and become little rivers of fire running out of the vent holes I had punched in the bottom of the barrel. Of course, they ran into the dry grass with a strong wind blowing. The village and curling rink were down wind and here was me with a piece of plywood trying to fight it, and getting burned in the process. Luckily, there was a dozer nearby and someone with some smarts that knew what to do with it. He turned that fire back very quickly, and all was calm again. That's how I felt when I saw you guys go after that fire ... you knew what you were doing. No hand wringing, just kill that sucker. Yeah, well done guys.

    Was a volunteer fireman and EMT while in college in Moscow Idaho. Fought a few field fires in stubble but no standing grain we and the farmers got it under control. One the old timers told me about a really bad field fire in standing grain during high winds. Multiple department and farm family. The fire jump one mile across a highway 95 road cut. It burned around 50,000 acres.
    Glad no one was hurt, equipment lost, and not much of the hay burned. It is nice that neighbors helped. I appreciate this channel and videos. Funny stories, animals licking or nosing the camera. It was out in no time thanks to the neighbors helping neighbors ethic in the farming/ranching community! It’s something I’ll never forget. When the fire was out, everyone came to the house where my grandma had a big pot of coffee, cold milk, and a variety of cookies and pies! Every one sat around and talked about the fire in order to bring their heart rate down I’m sure!!! I thought I was so lucky to have been out checking on cattle with my grandpa so I got to see the action!! So many teenagers were there too with their dads etc. and worked hard right next to the older men.

    I enjoyed your video. I have some info to share (you may already have been told this but I’m not going to read all 800+ of your comments to find out), and some tips and advice.
    I’m a retired 31 year career California firefighter. Everything I’m going to share is based on training and experience.
    First, in my opinion, guys like you, your dad and farming neighbors are LOADED with pragmatic common sense and can do just about anything you set out to do. The epitome of hard workers.
    Basic Wildland Fire Info:
    The majority of all Wildland firefighter deaths occur in light flashy fuels. Grasses. Forests, chaparral, brush, bushes, whatever kind of fuel that is burning, the main flaming front of any Wildland fire is carried by the grasses.
    Light flashy fuel burns hot and fast. If it’s wind driven it will outrun you and overcome you.
    That being said, from what I see in your video of your crop, it’s ALL grass.
    DO NOT BE COMPLACENT.
    If something can go wrong, it will go wrong. Always knowing that will cause you to act accordingly and stay safe.
    Wildland fires go out when they run out of fuel, primarily. Fire breaks, cutting line, scraping a surrounding line of fuel to bare mineral earth. Water works with little areas or knocking the heat out of a flare up, but cutting line is the tactic of choice for your field fires.
    Ok, here’s some basic equipment advice for you.
    1) PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Get yourselves each a set of lightweight single layer Wildland turnouts (PPE). Any good pair of leather boots too. You don’t need firefighter gloves but you do need a basic pair of leather gloves. You need a Wildland helmet with a nomex shroud. Attach a pair of goggles to your helmet.
    That’s is the bare minimum level of protection you need. Keep it clean and stored in a gear bag you keep handy with you.
    2) Tools - Get each of you a McCloud. It’s a scraping tool. It was my tool of choice on Wildland fires but perfect for lightweight grass fires.
    I have never used one of these but in many training classes I’ve seen pictures of this tool, that was made specifically for your type of fire. It’s called a Fire Swatter. I’ve watched videos of it being used and they look like they work fantastic on light grass fires.
    Practice using your gear and tools.
    3. No matter how small the fire, always identify your escape routes and safety zones.
    Learn what LCES is. It’s the basic life safety fundamentals on the fireline.
    You don’t need to attend a fire academy to stay safe. There is plenty of info online.
    The largest National Wildland firefighting resource is from the NWCG (National Wildland Coordination Group). Their website has publications available you and your neighbors can use to bump up your approach to those grass fires you encounter.
    Don’t be complacent.
    If your local experts ever tell you, “This is how we’ve always done it”, the hair on the back of your neck should stand up is a huge red flag for you to beware.
    Learning never ends. Professional firefighters take as many classes in their final working year as they did in their first year.
    There is always more to learn.

    I have seen the catalytic converter set fire to long grass when they park on it. When I saw Jeff park his truck, I thought that might have been a problem. Glad that wasn’t the case and that your fire was so quickly extinguished. Keep the videos coming, luv em!

    Dude...Give yourselves a big pat on the back! 👊You all earned an honorary fire badge!
    You guys did an awesome job! As a long time firefighter, I'd be ecstatic to see you guys having the fire darn near out upon arrival! Cole don't underestimate the power of water! That 25 gallons was better than none and I've seen a 2½ gallon water fire extinguisher put out an entire room. Although the steam in a room is a big factor the amount of speed and energy you guys had knocked it down fast!
    Kudos

    Smelt something once got off tractor and some hay was smoldering on the dtiveline. Of course I pulled it off so the tractor didn't catch and it burst into flames and I dropped it. Grass caught instantly. I stepped on it had 2 fires. Stepped again had 4 fires. Luckily I caught it as soon as it happened and my bladder was full cuz I got that sucker out . Those grass fires are just scary because they jump and split so easy. But your neighbors what good people they are

    My least favorite part of ACL repair therapy is when my therapist would extend my leg and lean on the knee. Lol. Good thing she was cute, otherwise...well, I'd have cried. I think the doc cut the patella ligament short, and figured: "yeah, it'll stretch" SOB. LOL.

    Maybe in the next video you can provide more detail on how the rock started the fire. Or it could be that I dropped off when you explained it.

    • @melaniejay3457
      @melaniejay3457 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff was cutting the field and a blade on the cutter made contact with the rock. That produces a small spark which in dry conditions is enough to grow into a big fire.

    • @EFCasual
      @EFCasual 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hitting a rock can spark.

    • @smcox1991
      @smcox1991 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rock + Metal = Sparks
      Mowing with a disk mower those blades are hauling ass spinning so when you come into contact with a rock it’s going to make sparks.

    • @kluckfabrication5991
      @kluckfabrication5991 3 ปีที่แล้ว
