    Re-upload, because I realized I messed up something in the previous upload.
    I don't expect this video to do very well, its a bit more educational than the average WT video.
    I would like to upload more WT videos, but I'm still trying to figure out how I want to go about this.
    Pls before u comment, watch the video.
    sincerely,
    ~ my two braincells
    Also, should I make a Discord server?
    I kinda want to, but idk if anybody cares lmao

    Regarding the pylons, I did some testing in a few planes (F-4E, Su-17M4, even the Milan's giant pylons) and couldn't find a single instance where pylons added any amount of measureable weight or drag. I was looking to prove that they did and found nothing. However, what's attached to pylons *does* add drag, and that includes empty rocket pods, so you should still enable empty container auto-jettison in air battle settings.

    • @WalvisYT
      @WalvisYT  ปีที่แล้ว +72

      Thank you for pointing this out. I just did some testing, and it appears the pylons themselves do indeed not add any drag.
      Overall, it doesn't change anything about my final verdict. However, for the sake of correctness, I am pinning this.

    The thing is you got these results achieving a 4.75 K/D in the F5C as a fighter. The whole-population average K/D for players using it as a fighter is probably about 1.2. And what's more, they do not have a winrate of 90% they probably have a winrate of 52%. When you're in this regime, you're going to have a lot of games where you fly around and don't shoot anything down for 15 minutes, during which you may or may not be killed. You return to hangar 15 minutes closer to death and having gained nothing for it.
    That's why people think bombing is a more consistent strategy. Because even if you're not very good, you can probably sneak past the enemy long enough to have a score that's not 0.

    • @WalvisYT
      @WalvisYT  ปีที่แล้ว +41

      As a fighter you might not kill an enemy before you die. As a bomber you might die before you get to a base.
      Its a myth that one is more consistent than the other. The only real difference is that dropping bombs on a base takes no skill, and thus it can easily be done by anybody. But if you plan on bombing bases / killing ground targets to grind, buy any of the strike fighter premiums for the US, and not the F-5C.

    • @javispiq01
      @javispiq01 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I know that just my opinion is not enough but I would agree that bombing requires much less attention, skill and focus than playing as a fighter.
      specially in the F5C case, which doesn’t have ultra-low skill needed missiles (such as the su25k) that can get you 2 sure kills against many things at their br.
      In the case of war thunder, as the grind is pretty long, it is somewhat reasonable that people just want to have a braindead way of getting to their desired objective of the F14 for example 😅

    • @Kraus-
      @Kraus- ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I would say bombing is not the skilless play that bad players make it seem like. You don't judge the skill capacity of dogfighting by the players who simply point and click in headons. Bombing well takes more skill than just dogfighting since it combines all the skill of dogfighting with the extra task of accomplishing an objective.

    • @TheOneWayDown
      @TheOneWayDown ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Kraus I wouldn't say more skill, but more than it's given credit for. Most bomber pilots aren't good bomber pilots though, they're gonna climb to space, drop their payload, and then waste the enemy fighter's time.
      A good bomber pilot imo is one who can bait fighters into wasting energy and get some decent crits or even kills with the turrets

    • @appa609
      @appa609 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WalvisYT It's not a myth a priori. At this point, it's a hypothesis that could be tested by a dataset representative of the population.
      Actually I think killing AI targets is more likely to get you a nonzero score than either pvp or base bombing alone, and most players hybridize.

  • @Boris_The_Turtle
    @Boris_The_Turtle ปีที่แล้ว +53

    A few things I would like to point off, first off, its best to take 3-4 napalm canisters to bomb bases since it's a fraction of the weight of a full bombload, and still take out a base. Secondly, if you have the pylon automatic jettison key slider activated, you will drop your pylons after use, and you will not have any additional drag since the little extensions on the wing for carrying ordinance do not have drag modeled. Also consider using 2 second periodic flares when you are approaching the target, so you can drop your bombs without dying.
    From when I tested out the fastest grind methods in the F5C, using Napalm made me fast enough to get to the bases every time, and faster than my competition. Plus add like 1-3 kills on top of that, and you get some insane rewards.

    • @MrRobschnieder
      @MrRobschnieder ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Even though napalm gives less SL i agree that its better to take napalm over bombs as napalm is lighter meaning you are faster and more agile.

      Thanks, I just now discovered this after a week of experimenting. Most games Ive done 4 but 3 is probably fine if you release at once and time it right. Contrary to the video, I've found that if I survive the initial ingress, I'm usually far enough from the main furball that the only locals are slower strike planes.

    As an early-game player the notion that bombing is at all consistent is completely alien. It really just feels like it's a roll of the dice if an enemy fighter notices you then decides to climb up and snipe you, or if you get a free game bombing bases uninterrupted.

    Thumbs up on the video. As an avid F-5C pilot in SIM who takes off with napalm every time - I would like to point out that this plane being a premium means it's almost entire reason for it's existence in the game is to grind - the largest potential to do this is bomb, then go Air to Air as you suggest. However what I have found in SIM is even with the most recent addition of teir 12 I am flying against MIG 29's which make this "terrific little dog fighter" really pale in fear outside the hands of the most talented pilot. I would say average players who can do fight shouldn't bomb with it. Those who understand how to bomb without being shot down (not possible consistently, admittedly) will have the largest gains from this Premium Aircraft thus fullfilling it's intended role as a premium plane. It seems to me you have another strong argument for decompression that the community as whole continues to agree on - breaking up these top teirs, more.

    • @Statink
      @Statink ปีที่แล้ว

      As a 3:1 K/D player too i suggest you to take bombs when you land mid match, most of the time there is a a10 acting as a bait so you have the time to do a bomb run and go dogfight the 1 or 2 last, its add a little bit of RP and SL

  • @Skyfighter64

    Let me posit a couple ideas:
    1. You don't have to go out with a full bomb load. That's wasteful, and on normal maps, at least the last time I played War Thunder, you should only need a partial bombload, reducing you total weight and performance losses from trying to attack enemy bases.
    2. I don't like rushing into a fight right off the bat. I like being slower into the fray, so I can see how things start developing, so that I can apply my jet to the fullest potential. In my A-5C, I would almost always target a base, dump my bombs (which covered the repair cost for my jet, even if I couldn't destroy it solo), followed by my breaking either left or right, depending on what information was available. breaking away from the active combat let me get into some great positioning, and despite being a HOTAS player, I ground out my entire chinese tech tree, starting with a level zero crew, managing a K:D greater than 1:1.
    3. Not everyone can use guns well, it's especially hard when you don't have mouseaim/instructor taking any challenge out of actually having to control your plane. Aim-9E's are just terrible missiles. Trying to get stuck-in when those are on your wingtips are a terrible idea if you aren't that good with jet fighter guns. Letting fellow players set themselves up as targets, helps improve your chances of hitting with those lame missiles.
    But that's just me. I also used my F-100D as primarily an attack aircraft, because I was far better at that than getting the Sidewinders to actually work for me.

Ngl its just 10x more fun to only strap the missiles on and show people you're not afraid to dogfight with that thing.
    Sorta opened my eyes to it after i had some random fun in custom battles with it and noticed the nose priority it has w/o max payload

    really good and honest video! The real problem with the jet bomber play style is few of them help to win the game. Most of them die straightly on the way bombing or just on the way back to airfield to rearm and bomb base again! I experienced many times that some players fly right through battle field leaving their teammats fighting against enemies. Some may explained that they don't need skill but just faster grinding. But after that, you know nothing about positioning, how to shoot missiles and dogfght. Finally you got your favorite jets, knowing nothing how to fly it. It just not sounds fun to me. After all, I play games for fun not for grinding.

    Hello, while I agree with this video. To save on TWF If you take this plane out with just one 2000 lb. bomb, this is not enough to take out a base. However since 80% of the time there will be other bombers. You will be awarded the destroyed base since you’ll do over 50% of damage with this one bomb. Meaning once you drop this bomb you are free to immediately engage most planes since you’ll be less likely to be intercepted with a light payload. This is what I believe has been the most consistent SL and RP printer.

    I am an F-5C guy, and grinded to the F-14 from the beginning of the tree within 3 weeks with it. A couple of points:
    1. You do not need to bring full bombload to destroy a base. You can bring partial and achieve the same result.
    2. The added weight and drag HELPS you. You end up taking off slower and watching your team enter the furball before you get there. You can then vector yourself away and around, slowly accelerating to 1000km/h by the time you get halfway to the base. Once you drop your bombs, you start acting as a fighter.
    Using this strategy of evade, bomb, then fight, I was able to learn top tier and grind to the F-14 super quickly. It is NOT a turd of a bomber. It is a great airplane and acts well as both bomber and fighter. If someone can't do both, thats literally just a skill issue that has to be worked at. Its still the best plane for grinding the tree.

    tbh the tornado IDS is baller, you get two 6x drops = 2 bases, + all aspect aim9s.

    this philosophy is exactly why I decided to focus on gunnery with prop bombers a few months back, nobody expects you to do anything besides bomb a base (if that). If you get a pvp kill you're regarded as a god. get three kills in a B-24 you're a chad bomber pilot, get three kills with a mustang you're hogging the kills.

    I fly bombers and strike planes like Wyvern, you are not completely useless, in most of the cases I would have 2-3 of enemy planes following me for solid few minutes and getting those planes away from combat should help the team to get the numbers down

      @WalvisYT  ปีที่แล้ว

      " I would have 2-3 of enemy planes following me for solid few minutes "
      I have no doubt this works in a plane like the Wyvern, as it is very fast at its BR. A fully loaded F-5C though? Not so much. Almost everything that isn't a pure ground attacker can catch easily catch up to a fully loaded F-5C within no time.
      As soon as an enemy is chasing you in the F-5C when you are carrying bombs, you have to drop your bombs and start evading or you die.

      @@WalvisYT I believe so. I still don't play that high BR, I am at 9.3 now but for sure I know in high BR for every second that you are not looking around you end up eating a rocket. I've had games where last 2 remaining enemies would kill half of the team and me being the bomber would ground pound and take a win on tickets, its not nice but its win. Most of the stuff in this game is random

    This might just be me, but I take a couple of lighter bombs and bomb some ground targets and then go fight. Worst case I drop the bombs if it looks like I cant get to a ground target because someone is coming to intercept me.

    Bombing in general is a bad idea. Every bomber is a waste of a player; how many games have you seen won by bombing? 1? 2? It doesn't matter if it's an SBD or a Canberra, a bomber does not meaningfully help their team.

      When you get to supersonic jets it doesn’t happen quite so much, but in everything up to and including subsonic jets ticket victories happen a lot. So often the difference comes down to bases and ground pounding.
      On top of that sometimes I want to do more than dogfight.
      At this point arcade is a lot more fun than rb anyway, as it presents a variety of ways to win, meaning that you actually have to think about what your team needs instead of the narrow minded rb game of team deathmatch.

    You considering yourself average is actually a good thing for this statistics you made, also I doubt even the best players can do any better when your plane is that slow with bombs heavier than half of your plane.
    That being said, some viable f 5 tactics are going Aim9 only first and just getting bombs after rebase. Or take the anti ground missiles and farm ground targets, the heavy tanks patrol boats and such are actually decent. And these missiles dont create so much drag too.

  • @donscarfa777
    @donscarfa777 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, the best way to do that is to take a 2,000 lb and napalm because that gives you way better fight performance and you can still knock out a base and you can still bomb people on your tail with the splash damage from the 2000 pounder

  • @AcceptYourDeath

    If you want consistency with bombing bases you have to sneak around on the map boarder which gets really tedious after a while and even this method taking the long way around won`t guarantee you won`t be intercepted at times.
    Going straight towards bases is a 50/50 in getting through it is far from being a consistent method.
    If you take your time going the long route you can also get some lucky air-to-air kills on your way back occasionally.
    Considering it takes much longer and your success isn`t hugely improved (you are still flying into the hornets nest eventually) it is somewhat more consistent with less matches played.
    Most importantly bombing bases doesn`t contribute to a win (not at top tier), even little things like critical hits during air-to-air combat or just being around and active can contribute towards your team snowballing slowly but surely into a win.

  • @gerkadas
    @gerkadas ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Some people seem to miss one important point, which is... Playing actively is REALLY brain-consuming and tiring. Would you rather play 10 games, being a full on fighter, prolly get a lil bit better results, than if u just bombed bases, and feel completely burnt out, since being a fighter means your match duration is long most of the time, especially if you are good at the game OR u play a braindead playstile, where u take off, point ur nose towards the base, hop on YT/DS/Reddit, press space couple of times and get pretty much same results in the end, as if u were tryharding and butchering enemy team, but you didn't even put much effort into playing the game? Yes, such playstyle is just being a massive jerk, ruining games for other competitive players, but when your only task is to grind through tech tree/event - its really important to still have the urge to play the game, when you reach your end goal. And I'm speaking from experience, since I have fully grinded german tech tree with 0 prem planes nor prem time, and by the time I go to phantom I felt like never touching german tech tree ever again. And then I decided fuck it, waited till big summer event, farmed the event vehicle using "bomb-spaceclimb-earn crates for playtime-profit" strat, sold it, bought prem A-5C and using almost the same tactic, which is spawn, bomb, j out, repeat, I was able to get my freedomfighter in under a month + I didn't feel like never playing war thunder ever again.

    I like to just take 3x1000lbs bombs. Still doesn’t preform great but good enough. I also take a wide high angle to the bases so the enemy’s usually are past there own bases and don’t notice me and leaves me in a good spot post drop.

    So, it is a better airplane for grinding than the F-5c? Like the F-4 Pahntom? I think the people say that F-5C is good because their capacity to be a bomber, so if it's not true, take a better fighter like de Phantom could be a goo deal?

  • @TheKaratejesus

    I think there's a more efficient way to be a bomber as the F5C which is taking fire bombs. They're far lighter than conventional explosives and you can take out a base with them still. You'll get to the bases more reliably since you're faster and once you drop them you're pretty much back to being a normal F5C.

    I do not own the F5C, but I'm familiar with the Tec tree variants.
    I think that the most effectiv way is tu use 4 napalm bombs, they are not very heavy and you can destroy at least 1 base. After Bombing go as fighter.
    With the full bomb load the performance of the aircraft is to low, you are not the first one @ the target and have many problems to dodge enemy planes.

    I grinded the F4c with the F5c then put a Tali on the F4c during the sale for peanuts and used the F4c as a bomber to grind the F14 and the F16. It was boring just doing one thingwith the F5c because it sucks as a bomber. The F4c comes with 3x more missiles, never sees an F14 and can get to a base first more times than not.
