I like how math problems are often worded like overanalytic dramas.

@@dawidek4267 The goblin's brain would short-circuit, causing them to die. The regions which the swimmer wouldn't want the goblin to see are non-existent in the goblin's world and basically inconceivable.

I don't understand why out of ALL the available goblin related material or sprites from other video games, why the yeti made more sense.
Maybe the problem originally had a yeti instead of a goblin and was changed halfway through, but the video was already done.

grind attack exp by throwing rocks at the goblin then kill it after you get a high enough attack level
You have to start by killing fish though, crocodiles are too high level until you kill a few fish.

There is my solution from a programmer's point of view:
Look directly at the goblin, turn exactly 180 degrees and swim fowards in a perfect straight line.
The goblin is now stuck at NaN position
Actually it has completely sense. The goblin would stay still until u don't pick up a side, so if u go perfectly straight the goblin will be always idle.
That's an interesting take
Shouldn't the goblin be programmed to travel to the point on the shore nearest to you? If so, this strategy wouldn't work anymore.

To be fair the goblin 4 times faster than you on the most basic setting, meaning that from scientific data on average human swimming speed being 2 mph, that the goblin at the lowest setting is going 8 mph. On average people can run 5.9 miles per hour (for 20 and 40 year olds) if they’re not in shape. So even if you make to the shore the goblin will still catch and eat you as it’s significantly faster meaning you’re eaten anyway. But let’s per say look at what a goblin actually looks like. It’s usually depicted as small and scrawny tricksters using cunning and devious devious to get their way. Let’s per say for how the game works is that if you’re too slow getting out of the water you get shanked by the goblin and eaten but if you’re quick enough to get out of the water you can fend the goblin off. That’s the only way that the game would make sense in this context if you get to the shore before the goblin reaches your location. Just if you wanted to know.

The goblin can't swim, so if you pull him into the water, he would be too busy drowning to eat you.
(I'm assuming the goblin wouldn't reach in and pull you out, but you could reach out and pull him in.)

I love that the instant you get on land, even if you’re an inch away from the goblin, he just goes “Oh, I guess you beat me, have a nice day” and let’s you leave unharmed.

@@spacetrainbaby3737 The goblin in the video intro and title is the free-ski yeti, and in free-ski the yeti is meant to be inescapable but if you hold down F you go really fast and escape it.

Funny thing is that I have actually lived through this puzzle. When I was a kid, I was swimming in my aunt’s pool, and then I realized that her massive dog was watching me from the border. Whenever I tried to escape, he got there much faster. I was lost af lol

Actually, you can just press F once, that toggles the "fast mode". Then, you have to keep going down until the distance meter wraps around to the beginning. The counter begins to count down to 0 after you've reached 2000m. That's also when The Abominable Snowman starts to chase you. He stops chasing you at around -120m. You can go up from the start of the game to find him jumping in one place, but when you go too close he will eat you. Also, you can download a modern version of SkiFree that works on the newest versions of Windows from the official website that you can find here: ski.ihoc.net/

I couldn't get this strategy to work manually, but what if you go right next to the centre, and then head directly away from the goblin on a zigzag path so the goblin keeps doubling back on itself, since the shortest path to where you're headed switches very quickly between clockwise to anticlockwise?
Close to the centre this should be easy since small movements from you create big movements in your nearest shore point, it gets harder as you get closer to shore. But maybe once it stops working you're close enough at that point that you can make it...
Edit: Upon closer inspection, the point at which it stops working is the edge of that inner circle. My implementation can escape 3.5 and 4.0, but can't quite get 4.2

The goblin is stupid. It does not anticipate where you will swim, it will always get to the closest point to where you are (NOT where you will be)

You're intuition is right, you can keep the monster behind you by moving left and right up until the 1/4 mark. Thx you helped me understand the problem. The part your missing is that starting from there you can go straight (perpendicular to the center circle) instead of traveling the shortest distance to the coast. Which allows you to go from a monster at 4.18x to 4.603x (look at the blog post).
@@mirkovodegel3120 if the goblin is at the exact opposite of the lake, you can cause him to prefer to go clockwise or anti-clockwise just by stepping left or right. you can force him to change his mind again and again while still having extra speed to move away until his angular speed is faster then yours (at 1/4 the distance of the center).

For goblin slayer there is no mathematical problem, once he is outside of the water there would be no more a goblin

Just move back and forth slightly over the center, the goblin will have to run halfway around the pond over and over constantly while you are barely moving. The goblin gets exhausted and faints. You are good to go.

Based on the movement rule of the goblin, you could swim in a perfect line away from the goblin and he’d never be able to move one way or another. Theoretically correct.

@@FatalBlow113 I watched the video. I’m saying the goblin is programmed to move in the direction that will put him the closest distance from you. If you start from the center and move in a perfectly straight line away from the goblin, then, technically, the goblin could move either direction as the distance from him to you if he moves left will be the exact same as the distance from him to you if he moves right. The goblin would require an extra rule to break the “tie”. I’m just having fun anyway, not to be taken so seriously..

That would be a good solution, problem is I doubt you can hold your breathe for too long

Idk how, but the graphics of the game are a beautiful mix with that jazz sound. It makes me think of old noir movies. The colors of the scene make it look like night time which adds to the great atmosphere of this video. I don't know how but this is just art

I faced this question a while ago in the form of a swan and a predator. I had accidentally solved this problem without knowing the real answer, but had pursued a different method based on the information given in the riddle - You could swim in circles of the pond/lake in order to create a flow, which if done enough times would help you accelerate faster than the entity you're trying to avoid.
Circling was the answer, but it was came upon using a different perspective.
Now i know what to do if I find myself in a circular lake with a monster awaiting for me on the shore.
I remember him from this ski game, he always ate you at the end of the track
I was thinking more realistically: Continuously swim in rapid, small circles, tire the poor gob out and just walk away.
How about drown him after that ?

Alternatively, be the Goblin Slayer. That way the goblin runs AWAY from you when you get to shore.
The problem is more simple than that. The goblin can't eat you if you eat the goblin first. It's just a goblin.

Really interesting question. Though if we ignore the math part for a moment and consider this if it were to happen realistically, even once you got to the shore the goblin would be able to catch up fairly quickly. Especially considering how tired you would be once you made it to shore.
You could swim a tiny circle very slowly in the middle of the lake and the goblin would die of exhaustion after a few minutes. Not the solution I know but I can't help but ask myself what I would actually do.

Awe I was bummed, I saw the goblin from the old ski game and thought you'd cover that.
That sir is a yetti, I know because it scarred me for life as a child on those digital slopes
Easy, move really slowly. The goblin moves 4x that amount. Slowly make your way to the edge. And then sprint the rest to land. The goblin will have to increase its speed with a speed of light delay so you have some nanoseconds to make it out.

00:00:26 yes, just swim in a circle around the middle about 30% of the way to the edge (i can't remember the exact number) and when you are opposite the goblin, swim quickly to shore and then you will narrowly escape
