I'd love to see more attention paid to sail inventory and condition on these reviews. Oftentimes that is a *huge* variable on used boats, and can make the difference in whether it's a good buy or something that you need to spend 5-figures on before you can go sailing.
Great point… often times the sails are stored and out of reach… it’s definitely one of the first few questions we’d suggest for the seller/broker as you’ve said it can be a big $$ item. Often times what we’ve heard is either ‘serviceable’ or ‘in good shape’ but you really don’t know until you get a full report from a surveyor
I'd always go into any deal on a sailboat knowing that new sails needed. Unless it's been used a lot in the last year, then "maybe",,, Rigging, and sails, should make one feel a lot safer in any case...
Oh my god, this would have been great to purchase. I recently purchase a stripped-down project boat for about the same price. Whoever gets this boat will have a great deal!
Hey you two! I think the captain pre-dates me, but these exemplified the sort of boat I learned to sail on! (not counting the little Moth scow on the Muskoka lakes in Ontario) As a teen, I would beg to crew on these sort of boats - races across Lake Huron and Erie! Perfect boats for the Great Lakes as weekend racer/cruisers, and the short peak to peak of Great Lake waves. (after a big westerly blow, even Lake Erie could get 16’ers, though!) These we’re “big” boats to me then. Great vid - many memories! Cheers

This is a boat that can and has circumnavigated the globe. At least her little sister (29) did. Her captain nearly went over the fan tail taking a piss. So while I am on this issue,,,,, piss on your knees over the side/ fan tail whatever. Never piss over the side standing up on a small vessel. 90% of the pleasure vessels are powered by gasoline. That engine (NOT motor with all due respect) is still running fine after all these years but the upgraded diesels offered at the time can be shit finding parts for. This is a very fine vessel for a very fine price. That engine can be rebuilt with new rings and whatever with only a light honing of the cylinders. No over-bore needed. There will be good and plenty of those A-4s celebrating their 100 years in marine service. PLUS gasoline does not present the black sea snot issues diesel fuel does. Many look down their nose at the A-4,,, I however do not. Yes, "cruising range" with an A-4 is something to be dealt with but c'mon she is a SAIL BOAT. If you want a motorboat then buy a freaking motorboat. I am no fan of the Cal 40 honestly. This is a totally lovely vessel. And of course, love those old Cal boats....thanks, Captain.
One of my brother-in-laws is a boatbuilder, retired, who says the worst cases of osmosis he saw, came with the advent of chopper guns! Hand laid up hulls didn’t give near as many problems! I used to spend a bit of time in a local yard, here in NZ, where many US boats got hauled out for osmosis repairs. One hundred percent of those hulls had been built using chopper guns! When stripping off the outer hull skin, not only would water literally gush out, but the areas, with little resin in the matting, was unbelievable! How they passed hull inspection can only be described as criminal, in humble opinion!
I believe Richard Henderson (Choice Yacht Designs author) owned one prior to his final affair with an Ohlson 38. My older brother loved these - I think especially for the reverse transom, which seemed pretty racy and modern at the time!
"gas engine" - I knew there would be a big dollar problem. Inboard gas motors are never safe. OTOH, at only $5k and the hull looks sound, it's an opportunity to convert to electric drive.
I was talking to a guy who has an Olson 40 with an electric drive I asked about 6 times every way I could what the range is “Not far” was all he’d say Works great for powering to the start line. A gas engine is fine if that’s what you’ve got.
One big upside to the Atomic 4 is that every harbor, every gas station has someone who can fix it. And most parts can be picked up at your local NAPA store. Had 1 for 25 years in my Sabre 28 and loved every minute I used it.
Seems the globalist chat gpt bot is busting out their electric future of control again. I want a huge battery bank of lifpo4s the size of a small truck on my boat. If the sails themselves were solar panels it wouldn't be enough. But okay sure you go ahead and let everyone know how awesome it is. I'll take the atomic or an old lister oil crusher
I raced on a cal 2-30 on the southern Chesapeake bay fast but gets cranky in strong wind downwind and you really needed to use the blopper also the mast is stepped on a steel fittings that can rust I had previously raced on a Kirby 25 so doing foredeck was a bit of a shock and you definitely need a reaching strut but get rid of the wire halyards. If your racing area allows you to race in phrf c you will kill the fleet worth putting the fixed prop to get there
I'm buying a Cheoy Lee 27, I'm paying less, but, it's in pretty good shape. If not, I would try this one. The A4 is a lawnmower engine, if you can fix one of those, you can fix an A4. I'm actually thinking about putting in a rebuilt or a Palmer, it has nothing right now. Everyone wants a diesel, but an A4 is so damn simple it's almost ridiculous. I had one in my Tartan 27 and it ran like a sewing machine, smooth and like CQ said, quiet. Just like any other system on a boat, it needs to be maintained. I love how CQ tries to go to Instagram, that cracks me up every time.
Atomic Fours are getting old, parts hard to get, competent mechanics hard to find Love the name Atomic four There’s now a lot of used Diesels out there I think the Beta Marine is the current choice (the A4 is more of an ancient car engine than a lawnmower engine)

A year on the hard, with a few drops and test runs from West Palm Beach each to the Bahamas, ( which is the greatest reason for boating). A weekend or two that will keep you wanting to continue the project. In the end, you'd have maybe another $10k into it. Then off to St Thomas or Puerto Rico... Spend a month, come back all refreshed. $15 k out the door, and memories of a lifetime. Yep this is a deal.. Caribbean cruiser !!! Get now, test after hurricane season. A great first timer boat for a good price .A little T.L.C. and your off sailing and with a little time here and there she will shine up great .Good for day sailing or a weeks vacation .I love the access to the engine so many boats are so hard to get to and if you need to fix something it's a real nightmare . especially if your not tied up to the dock .

I'm homeless, and have been living on small sailboats in the FL. Keys, for the past 30 years. (I'm on a Morgan Out Island 33 now) A young person should plop that thing in the water, and quit paying rent. Once you don't pay rent, put that money into the boat, than the causing account.

Keep trying but missing them. We are open to them for sure thank you
Almost bought one last year off a yacht club, just a little to small for me
If my old school math is correct, you were taking up 1/5th the length of that boat laying down in the v-birth.
And 1/5 the beam! 😄
Can it go to the Bahamas?
Sure could once you make sure she’s in safe working order… a surveyor would help with a checklist of what’s needed
This would be a great boat to take to Atom Voyager. If you didn’t want to refit it yourself.
He is amazing… big fans here
Ran-day powers
Great show....but Captain, your suspenders are on unevenly. Can you please do something about this?
They are off by about 5 degrees :D
Actually the braces are perfectly level ….it’s the body that’s uneven …but thanks for pointing that out
Good morning, love your TH-cam videos, question please if I may, I have a 26 ft c&c sail boat, I love her but she has a sail drive, I believe it's a honda 280,I can't find any one that can work on it, I think she over heat and she shutdown, can you please help me, thank you, Mario
A fantastic well built boat for single handed cruising on a budget A boat you can go places on and handle it easily. It would be a great restoration project (dump the blue)
😊🙏
Nice boat for some TLC, good price…
Agreed!
Egg zackly !!
@@YachtHunters 😁
maybe a thermal shower bag for an on deck shower, like van lifers do
Those work quite well… used them for years
Who is the sax(?) player?
We’ll have a playlist coming out soon that has all of the music used so far… thanks
First comment, lovely boat
First across the line! 👍
👍👍
great boat, did you ever sail on Arnie's Babe?
No I didn’t I only crewed for him once and that was in the 5.5 m nationals on the eastern shore. Gotta a great story about that one
I was campaigned my own little 25’speedster a Norman owens design. Called a Nordstar 25
Called “Charlie”
Please do a Corsair trimaran
We quickly checked out a trimaran without cameras around… some pretty scary stories… haven’t seen one for sale in our area of the world…
@@YachtHunters there's a dealer in Wareham, MA I believe -- some of us have a need for speed!
That was a Dinty Moore kinda boat.
Perhaps a 2-Dinty… one to fuel some of the clean up work
I have a 1974 25 feet
Fantastic boat
Sleeps 4 or 8 if you're friendly.
Quite friendly 😉
Realistic price. Shame about the jutting head....but still a bargain.
Head is a quick fix
My guess the owner found the new head fit the old holes and so voila!!
I'm homeless, and have been living on small sailboats in the FL. Keys, for the past 30 years. (I'm on a Morgan Out Island 33 now)
A young person should plop that thing in the water, and quit paying rent. Once you don't pay rent, put that money into the boat, than the causing account.
That’s the spirit… also that’s a great way to beat the system!!
Boat looks tired
Not semi gloss, go satin..
👍
