    Don't worry about replacing the 2nd muffler if you're on a budget the stock setup runs great with just a de-cat!
    I paid $11 for my stainless piece of pipe, thanks EBAY!
    3" stainless pipe works great if you cant find the 2.9"

    Completely free power as long as you have a $12 stainless pipe, a $238 muffler, and a $400 wire feed welder just laying around. What's more simple than that?

    In order to keep the AFR at a safe level without ECU tuning you should keep the catalytic converter and replace the muffler and resonator only, essentially installing a "cat-back" system. Since the Z900 has the resonator connecting directly to the headers it is best to just install a muffler and leave the cat and resonator in place, creating a "resonator-back" system. Removing the catalytic converter will create the lean condition you are referring to when using a full system, which is kind of what you did when you removed the catalytic converter and replaced the OEM muffler with a free flowing short GP muffler.
    Also, it is important to note that removing the catalytic converter is illegal and can result in a 10k fine.
    Since you removed the catalytic converter and installed a free flowing muffler an ECU flash is needed to adjust the AFR to correct and safe level.

    The Catalytic Converter is where most of the restriction comes from. How can you think this is any better than a full system replacement and will not require a retune? Getting rid of the breadbox will also shaves weight off of the bike.

    I really liked your video, so thanks for doing it. It was pretty difficult to tell from the video, but did the volume of the exhaust go up after the modification at all? I know the sound changed, but I would like a bit more noise out of my SC Project exhaust and am wondering if this might be the solution. I don't like an exhaust that is obnoxious but I like to be heard. Also, did the modification do what you expected it would? Increased power, no popping? Thanks again!

    • @DirtGearTv
      @DirtGearTv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes volume increase is noticeable but minimal (maybe 2-3db). It does increase power but not as much as full header would. My top recommendation to anyone wanting power and sound is headers. I really like my clone headers. Cheackout my “Akro Clone” video, I describe how to do the AIS blockoff which will prevent popping.

    • @tyjaster8467
      @tyjaster8467 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DirtGearTv I watched the clone akro video and after spending over $700 CAD on my slip-on I may try just the de-cat mod as I want to keep the cost down as much as I can. To be honest, after spending that much in the slip-on I was really disappointed with the sound. It is still a really quiet bike. I'm also less interested in power gains (it has good power) but the torque is fantastic. BTW I had to change the chain and sprockets recently so I knocked it down to 14 teeth on the front sprocket and went to a 520 chain.. the torque is nothing less than addictive. I would highly recommend doing this to anyone with a z900.

    • @DirtGearTv
      @DirtGearTv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes unfortunately slip on alone doesn’t do much for these bikes in terms of sound or performance. I think you will be please with the sound improvement by deleting the CAT. Certainly for the cost of it it’s well worth doing 👍

    I have a 2020 Z900. I ordered the mid pipe from Ebay for $80. I just had to cut that big box out (yes I want it loud) and clean the catalytic converter from the inside of the 40mm pipe end I had to leave for the installation. The mid pipe comes with the bracket so no welding necessary. It sounds like a beast and you can keep the original headers that have double wall and does not get blue or black. I have the same beer can Leo Vince end muffler. And just to correct: the bike WILL NOT RUN LEAN. This is not a carburetor bike. These modern ECUs adjust the air fuel ratio accordingly. You just have to ride it a bit.

    • @DirtGearTv
      @DirtGearTv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback! This is are a suitable option for some people. To play devils advocate, let me share why I didn't consider this option myself. For $200 you can get full "akro clone" headers which is proven performance. This video is just kind of an easy "free-bee" without going down the road of new exhaust. Notice how your bike now pop's during deceleration even after you've ridden awhile? That's a lean condition. The ECU is not programmed to compensate for changing/replacing up the exhaust, the narrow band o2 is very limited. That's an easy fix though, checkout 2wheeldynoworks!

    • @nrsimhavallabha5128
      @nrsimhavallabha5128 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DirtGearTv I don't think the "free bee" showed on your video is easy because it needs welding. I don't agree with you that you must remap the bike after changing the exhaust, because the ECU will compensate for that. However, this compensation is limited and you can get extra horse power by adding an air fuel optimizer like a Power Commander; but it will not hurt the bike if you don't add it. I myself will place an order for a performance air filter and a Power Commander V and will get it tuned at a Dyno Tuning, for added horsepower only. I really love the sound and looks of this Leo Vince Can, I'm just worried about water getting inside it since it is placed almost vertically.

    • @MrAl67
      @MrAl67 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it will run lean. The ECU won’t be able to make the adjustment. Bike ECU is not as advanced as car ECU.

      You will hear many opposing views on tune vs no tune. Its not that one is not right and the other is wrong, it just depends on your personal goals. If you are after best performance, than of course you will want an aftermarket tune. You really cant compare a bike with exhaust changes and no tune to a bike with mods and a tune, the difference is huge. If however, you are already satisfied with your current performance or your changes were minimal its not going to hurt the bike to run it with the stock tune. Hope that helps!

    Don't think your bike is going to run great, u need a tune and definitely u need to disable your lamda, only thing u gain is noise, lots of it, just got of the dyno with my z900 from 2020, only put a slip-on and a sport air filter on it, disabled the pair valve (to get rid of the popping sounds) and disabled the lamda in the tune, makes 134,7 hp and 104 Nm torque (got the graff to prove it) the on-off is gone and got lot's off more power in the mid and high rev's. More sound = not more power!!! And a small tip, before u tune your bike, get a better front and rear suspension, i got the andreani inner front fork and a hyperpro rear.

  • @jean-pierrefernandez2460
    @jean-pierrefernandez2460 ปีที่แล้ว

    the pipe is mostly for weight savings! Over three quarters of the power you get is from the ECU tune! The tune is required right out of the box it's not running right that's why everybody starts modifying in the first place, Considering how much everything else costs when you start modifying these days, the ECU tune is the easiest and not that expensive incredible difference even with the stock pipe Ivan's performance will do it for less than $400, you pop it off put it in the mail with his little printout form, give him a call tell him you're set up he turns it sends it back you plug it in, does anybody remember jet and carburetors remember how fun that was?

      In the vid I mention I ran the stock muffler for a while as it's unrestricted. In fact, I didn't end up keeping the Leo on this bike as it was a bit loud for my preference. I spent a couple dollars on the piece of pipe ($12 total I believe) but you're correct about using a mid pipe if you prefer to not have welded. Can also bring to local exhaust shop to weld up to save money.

    His story about air/fuel ratio is incorrect. Nowadays bikes have lambda sensors to adjust the air/fuel mixture dynamically through a feedback control system to a set ratio by the manufacturer including any set limits by any goverment regarding emissions. In otherwords, Kawasaki engineers set a target air/fuel mixture in the ECU of the bike, the lambda sensor registers the emissions (before it is filtered by the cat), then sends it back to the ECU to adjust the mixture. Then why should you tune your bike anyways if thats the case? To adjust the target air/fuel ratio, because the best mixture for the most favourable emissions is not the same as for the most powerfull setting or the best economical fuel consumption setting. If you dont believe me, google a bit about lambda sensors and especially search some emission charts.

    • @DirtGearTv
      @DirtGearTv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ramses19912 What story? All you did was simply repeat what I say to people in my videos. Checkout the video on 2WDW and why an aftermarket tune is important.

    • @Ramses19912
      @Ramses19912 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DirtGearTv 1:10-1:45 yes you have to tune if you want to get the most out of it indeed. However, at 1:25 you state that you are going to lean out your mixture with a full exhaust system and that you have to throw more fuel at it (with a tune I assume you meant). This is not true as your ECU will automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio to whatever it has been set to in the ECU, it will not run leaner nor richer. On the practical side, you do need to account indeed that the bike will startup lean after an exhaust system/air filter upgrade and requires some time for the ECU to recover its air/fuel ratio.
      So in short, what I understand from what your saying is that you lean out your system by upgrading your exhaust system and that you need a tune to get the air/fuel ratio back on track (or better). What I’m saying is that it’s not necessary to tune your bike after such an upgrade as the air/fuel mixture will be restored by the bike it self over time (say 30mins?).

    • @DirtGearTv
      @DirtGearTv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ramses19912 It’s a common misconception that because a bike is fitted with a narrow band sensor the factory ecu performs the same functions as an advanced fuel management and wide band O2, in short it does not. Your factory narrowband sensor is not giving you an advanced reading of AFR it’s basically telling you it’s lean or rich and is very limited in its mixture adjustment. An aftermarket tune is a completely different, if it were the same thing dyno tuners wouldn’t be in business. So yes once you make any changes to exhaust you’re already outside the parameters your factory ECU will compensate for, this is why as soon as you change your exhaust the bike will pop on decel and we correct this by plugging the ais

    • @Ramses19912
      @Ramses19912 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      DirtGearTv if the mixture adjustment is very limited then it wouldn’t make sense a tuner could fix that. The only thing a tuner does is adjusting the target AFR to what the wishes of the owner of the bike wants (more power/better fuel economy). It doesn’t make sense a control system is not capable of controlling its own system. A lambda sensor, doesn’t provide data about AFR, it provides data about emission particles as each AFR has its own composition of different emission particles like NOx and CO2, the ECU then translates this to an AFR and indeed concludes it is running lean or rich compared to the target AFR. But as we are speaking about a control system, which it clearly is, otherwise theres no need for that lambda sensor, it adjusts its AFR to converge to its steady state response.
      I own a z900 from 2018, when i took out the cat i had pops and bangs like you described, then went to a tuner because i wanted a smoother power curve and yet i still have my pops and bangs on decel. So if your theory was right this shouldn’t happen.

    You need to adjust A-F ratios otherwise the engine will run lean and overheat. Best case scenario it goes into limp mode. Seriously guys don't decat you bike, most of people will not be able to use the extra power and even with a power commander, it will only increase power at the top of the RPM range. Moreover, modern engines are built with the catalytic converter(and the backpressure thereof) in mind so it doesn't neccesarily "hurt" engine performance.

    • @monkmoto1887
      @monkmoto1887 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Back pressure isn’t a thing for making power or torque. Basically every bike makes more power bottom to top with a flash tune and opened up exhaust. Furthermore, just because you can’t ride your bike doesn’t mean the rest of us have that problem, the extra power is better to have and not need.

    the gains are more on the feelings' side of things than actual bike performance in most cases of mods. (proper suspension setup makes the most noticeable improvement in any wheel based machine)
    is there a noticeable difference in performance between a full tank of gas and 1/4? that's 20lbs weight reduction and yet it's unnoticeable. who's able to gauge how much gas is in the tank by 'how torquey' the engine feels?
    even a best case scenario mod w/ 10% power increase is the same (a pipe can't do that alone)...
    racing is different because the machines are pushed to their limits.

    Ok first of all that's ass back words if you remove the cat. YOU DO NEED to tune the bike for what you want you should leave the cat cut off the exhaust expansion box or as you call it the bread box then fit a pipe from the cat to the muffler that is the right way to do it with out a tune. and will give you about a 10 hp increase taking out the cat. will lean out your bike getting rid of everything after the cat. will but the stock ecu will correct that small amount and yes i do have a z900 its a 2017 and i do know what i'm doing not trying to be a dick just stating the facts i mod bike for a living fyi. here is a vid. on the right wat to do it. th-cam.com/video/H37K7kH3f_c/w-d-xo.html

    • @DirtGearTv
      @DirtGearTv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is one way to do it, definitely not what I would call "the right" way. Also you can buy a connector pipe for like $60 on ebay for this mod rather than turning the bike into a chopped up turd. So I agree with you in part, however the ECU will not correct this much of a change in exhaust, it was never designed to. If it didn't require a tune than why does it lean pop after the change is made?

    Holy shit you don't know shit about modern EFI. In no way does a full exhaust cost you HP.
    It always results in a gain. The ECU adjusts air/fuel live. So opening up the exhaust will cause the ECU to compensate. The reason why a tune really opens up the HP and Torque is because from the factory, bikes are tuned for better fuel economy and emissions to meet Euro 4/5 mandates. Either a plug and play programming ECU pigtail (dynojet) or having a Dyno tune from a shop will change the factory air/fuel mix to something much more aggressive.

    I don't see the fascination with loud exhausts and silly little tin cans racer boys add to their bikes that sound like crap to everyone around you (except to your deaf ears). De-catting is illegal in some places and if you have smog regulations, you will fail the test. Don't forget your warranty - no right minded rider will want to void an already crazy short warranty these awesome machines come with. This type of mod only belongs in one place - on race only bike used exclusively on a track. If you are so concerned the police will know when you come and go and how fast you are going, then just slow down, drive reasonably. If you have nothing to hide, who cares if the police know or hear you. Paranoid much? Now with all the criticism I just laid down and before you delete my comment, I want you to know I really enjoyed the video and you seem to know your stuff. I don’t delete comments for people who differ in opinion, I like feedback. De-catting a bike is more common than you may think. What’s the first aftermarket move people make when you buy a bike? Exhaust. So the overwhelming majority are already “decatting” in reality no one cares about it on the bikes except maybe California. It’s a bit of a stretch to call me paranoid though. I’m close with the dozen or so police officers who are also my neighbors, who I also rode bikes with. People don’t buy sport bikes to always stay under the posted speed limit, neither does anyone buying a car for that matter, so let’s get real here. Maybe you’ve never broken the speed limit, but for the %99.9999 rest of us, i’m just trying to be respectful towards my neighbors 😜
