    Hobbiest beekeeper here. Only had a couple hives going into winter. Lost em all 😑. Definitely learned from our mistakes. Gonna try and bank some queens this year. It’s been a tough winter.

    I’m just coming in from doing some inspections and ours are looking about like yours but without the dead pile. Of course we go no snow and probably twenty degree warmer weather. I’m happy with how they’re looking.

      Between Hurricane Laura and this snow storm this past week I lost all of my hives 😞. I may have one hive left we will have to see if they pull through. North Louisiana has taken a beating for sure.

    The bees seem very happy in the dome. The heat must be up caught up there and they have room to move around.

      That's a bummer. Randy Oliver of Scientific Beekeeping would be an excellent resource on Varroa Mites. He strongly advises it's critical to have Varroa at low levels by August 1-15 timeframe to have strong winter (diutinus) bees.

    K&L thanks for the video. I totally understand why they haven’t eaten those patties! I’m sure they’ve been in a tight cluster. Mine are probably the same way. We didn’t lose power or have any accumulations. Just temps in the teens!

    I have a couple of migratory covers that I didnt want to use because the wood warped up in the middle and leaves an 1/8th open gap all along both sides. Then I saw yours and Ian's videos with the reflectix and it seals that gap nicely. Thanks!

    Do you ever sample the bottom board winter bee drop for a mite count? Or, stack the smaller (weaker) hives on top a stronger with newspaper and queen excluder? Ian mentioned that, we are going to give that a run this spring.
    Dear Lord looks like you had some wind! Now comes the darn cleanup.

    I don't think I've seen a storm like this for nearly a decade. Wow this was wicked. The ice was beautiful, but treacherous. Glad you all made it through without harm. It is reassuring to see that your bees did so well for this sudden cold - I was wondering how Tennessee bees fair through such an extreme change. Looks like the Carnies did just fine.

    Love your videos Kamon and learn so much from you. Very instructive. Thank you! I am a first year beekeeper. I recently saw a TH-camr say you should get the dead winter bees out of the hive but I see you left them. Do you ever remove dead bees that have accumulated? I noticed lots of housekeeping bees carrying the dead out when we got into our hive last week. Keep the videos coming!

    • @kamonreynolds

      Hey Teresa thank you! I don't help the bees pull them out unless they have a blockage at the entrance. I have 300 hives so I can't help my bees with the little things as much. It likely won't hurt the hive to help them a bit, but it might make them agitated

  • @dennisstocum513

I had a few minutes just to peek under some lids yesterday and they're going to need another patty this week. I think I stay about 8-9 degrees warmer than you though. I'm stoked to see them eating it so quickly though and hopefully I'll see some brood when I break into them on Tuesday.

    Kamon, I worked bees today and noticed long splatters on all sides of the hives. Nozema is generally just around entrance. Cleansing flights? Ideas?

    • @tkbfoot12
      @tkbfoot12 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same thing, I think its due to the bees not flying far from the hive to cleanse due to the temps. Mine started flying at around 28°F. Yet, they wouldn't fly more than a few feet from the hive and come back.

    • @russellkoopman3004
      @russellkoopman3004 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jeff, I think they are so loaded that they explode the second they think they are out of the hive. Bees don't want to be flying around much when temps are under 50 F. It is 28 F here for a high and I see some bees out cleansing also but many aren't finding their way back home.

  • @Makermook
    @Makermook 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, Kamon. Do you reckon the bees would build comb on the inside of that dome if you left it on all year?

    • @2hot
      @2hot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm in NE Alabama and I left mine on most of last year all Winter and they have made no attempt to make comb on it. There is 1 spot that looks like it may have a little propolis on it (aside from what they put to seal the edges). That will come off with a little rubbing alcohol though I'm sure. Came in handy for feeding sugar and pollen patties already this year. Now it's about time to take it off & put on the Ceracell feeder for liquid feed.

    Thanks for the videos Kamon. Couple questions if you have time. 1. I have some pollen sub left over from last year that I made from your small batch recipe. It has been refrigerated but has couple small spots of mold. Is it still safe for use or should I toss it? 2. Temps here in NE KS will be in the 50’s next week with lows around freezing. Too early to consider sugar syrup.? Maples have not bloomed yet. Sugar boards on hives.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might be good under the top layer. Scoop the mold off and see how it is underneath. If it looks and smells fine I would use it.
      You can feed syrup earlier than most people thing but i don't know what the limits are. I feed a gallon to a colony first week of feb before this snowstorm. They were so large they could chug it all in one day. they look great. I fed it on a 55 degree day. 1:1 I am still experimenting

      I’ll let Kamon give you the wisdom, but I’m up in Portland, I’ve fed early and heavy before, then faced crowded hives when weather did not permit swarm management. Currently, I’m feeding protein to overwintered nucs for sale. I’ll wait another 2-3 weeks to feed hives, preferring to see building numbers in April rather than March. Hope that helps.

    • @paulchristu996

      I'm waiting for a couple of more weeks but I live in MN, not balmy IA. We have 3-4 nice days coming then it is back to the 20's for highs. I threw a couple of sugar bricks into two of my hives this weekend and plan to give the rest a big block tomorrow when it's warmer. So personally I'd advise waiting another week or two and wait for a good forecast and a chance for all your bees to have had a cleansing flight.
