    The Autumn flow has come around beautifully in the Adirondack Mountains. I'm not sure if its what I'll do in the future but I had a triple brood deep setup this year and its been awesome to have such a huge work force, the amount of honey I've been able to extract has been a dream. Something I need to get a lot better at however is planning out the season and getting into the same pace as my bees so there is more efficiency.

    What would happen if you shared a box of comb overhead to put the surplus nectar to relieve the swarm factor? To extend them out of the swarming season

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think that would totally work. I just prefer singles over nucs when possible. I think I would have to make something to go between the excluder and the divider to prevent the queen from squeezing thru. A plastic excluder would like lay down on it better.

      Kamon Reynolds - Tennessee's Bees
      More space is always the best answer. I fall back on a philosophy that maybe only works up here where the seasons whip the bees intentions. The nucs I make are purposely restricted. They share space to put all their work. With the queen restricted, she’s is saved for next season where she simply explodes.
      BOOM, lol

  • @jtelander
    @jtelander 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video. When you add space and empty frames of drawn comb, will you do anything regarding the hive beetles? Will the beetles have an advantage until the bee population increases? Is the existing bee population sufficient to harass the hive beetles across 10 frames?

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are sufficient to patrol that area since the added Combs are just wax and no beebread. If we gave them nothing but frame of honey and bee bread it would be difficult for them but I think they could pull it off. Too close for comfort and I wouldn't risk it.

    Kamon Reynolds, it would have been good to see how you got the bees out of box & what to do with #2 nuc. If you took the divider out, they merged. If you transferred #2, you could shake half & half. I have a lot of queen castles, but prefer my single nucs. Your bees look good.

    • @kamonreynolds

      I left the second one in the original locations since it was a little smaller. It picked up the forager bees. I however decided to give it a new box set up like the other nuc so that I could put away the queen castle for the winter

      I had a similar situation and realized my screened bottom board was a mega breeding ground for SHB. I went to solid bottom boards plus installing a couple beetle traps and while the bees aren’t like gentle lambs, they have gone from a 10 down to a 2.5 on the anger scale. Not a panacea, but it’s definitely inline with the results Kamon has displayed in previous videos.

      I don't know I just don't get worried about beetles that much. I make splits strong, keep them strong, and also realize that if the hive dies or gets weak it only takes a small number of beetles to ruin the combs/hive. 10 or 100 beetles will ruin the combs either way. I have a box of brawny dine a max. Maybe I will break some out.

    In a setup like that box, do you still need to have a bottom entrance of some sort so it’s easier for the bees to clean the nest or drag dead bees out? Or is a bottom entrance not necessary? I really enjoy these videos

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Lucas. Bees do an amazing job of pulling dead bees and most debris out of entrances like these. I would agree it is a little more work though. There are some beekeepers who are adamant that bees are much healthier with only upper entrances. I have tried it and what I have found is that healthy bees do well in both.

    Kamon,
    Do you know the lineage of these queens? Do they have any Buckfast genetics? I loved to see those bees chase beetles. These bees in the box are probably bees you used to emerge and
    mate the queen. Right? When you took that flexible cover off the two nuc box did you see any beetles on the bottom of the top? The way the video showed, it seemed the beetles were mostly in the bottom. Do you see a lot of color variation from queens made from this queen mother? You pointed out the differences between the two queens and your camera operator really helped. The first
    queen seemed to have a shorter elongation and therefore her cross-abdomen stripes were still pronounced. As she increases ovarioles, I think she will look just like the second.
    My thanks to you and your camera person.
    Carroll

    • @kamonreynolds

      I went ahead and pulled the other hive out and put it in it's own 10 frame box and shook the whole queen castle box at the entrance of the 1 nuc. The 2nd nuc was smaller so it was placed in the original location to collect all the forager bees. Worked like a charm and both will be moved on a 2 way pallet to a different beeyard

      Most beekeepers like myself don't sell nucs this time of the year. The have to be in great shape to get ready for winter and if they are then I wouldn't want to sell one as I can turn it into at least 2 in spring. I would be wary of buying bees this time of the year. However, if you could get a hold of a good one then it could work.

      They get their butts beaten haha. Seriously though big bees wear them out and force them into corners or traps shortly. I have only used 3 traps on 3 hives this year. The beetles have been lower than usual. (likely the cold spring) Big bees do very well against them. Protecting removed bee bread combs and the combs from deadouts have to be dealt with quickly.

      Hey Walter thanks for being around so long and commenting! These apivar strips have only been on 2 weeks. And I will treat them with Oav in November-December. Mating colonies don't build mite populations very fast due to the limit to the brood nest and the occasional stop and starts of queen laying. However, I want these young queens to come out of winter without any mites holding them back. I will have to feed these 2 bit for them to over winter well. Once we finish the fall flow in early October I will hit them with some 2:1
