PO-33 Meets SP-404SX // Lofi without a cause

  • Tucked the SP-404 SX away for a while and didn't even realize it. Out of nowhere i went for it and along the way grabbed my favorite travel gear the Pocket Operator KO aka PO-33. Utilizing both these samplers to chop and resample themselves to create new rhythms is so much fun. Its a go to when it comes to destroying samples or getting that lo-fi hip-hop sound.

    I can imagine Ricky on a long flight, grooving away on what looks like a calculator to the person sitting next to him.
    They must wonder why he has his headphones plugged in, tapping away and head bobbing!

    As an 80% software/MIDI dood, it's a little funny that my favorite channel on youtube about production is yours. Always great stuff :)

    • @JamieClark
      @JamieClark 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stray Medicine yeah. In my head, I’m dawless full time. In reality I own 4 full DAWs and I’m a wizard in 3 of them with full suites of plugs from Waves, NI, IK and AAS. but if I can learn workflow that I can apply to my production, even in software, it’s always worth it. But I do love my hardware setup something special...

    • @JamieClark
      @JamieClark 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Orlando Pergamo I mean, maybe if you’re on FL or something, but using Reason devices definitely has a workflow (esp if you bounce to audio), and even in Logic or PT or whatever, you can resample your work. Ableton makes it simple to record audio from one track to another and then cut that audio up and put it in a drum rack post-processing, etc. Maybe by “workflow” you’re thinking of which physical buttons you press along the way? I’m being a bit more process oriented than that and just like hardware, I’m trying to use my ears as much as I can instead of relying on numbers I see on a screen.

    • @TayTayMakesBeats
      @TayTayMakesBeats 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ftj4441 You're trolling right? I can't stand software with how short my attention span is but there's a workflow for pretty much every method. Really just comes down to preference.

    • @BarMorBBOOM
      @BarMorBBOOM 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamieClark what's wrong with fl?

    • @JamieClark
      @JamieClark 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bar Mor probably nothing - but I don’t see it as having a “workflow” that you can equate to using hardware synths and sequencers and audio on tape - it’s a bit more “excell” in that regard. But I’m sure it’s a fine tool and has its own “workflow” for creating music, just not as cross-compatible with other DAWs or hardware (imo based on trying it and being confused asf even tho I’m super competent with a bunch of other cross-platform tools)

    My gf got me a PO-33 for my birthday two weeks ago without knowing I'd been watching your videos religiously (despite not owning a single piece of your gear). Each of your Pocket Operator videos is like watching someone build a car out of household objects. I have the thing. I have hands and ears and eyes. But I'll be effed if I can make it all work together.

    Awesome vid! There's a thing I've found out about the DJ effect on the sp. When you use the pitch, you can set the length with ctrl 1. When ctrl 1 is fully up, the pitch down will sound like a timestretch. When ctrl 1 is fully down, the sample will jump when pitched down. It seem like ctrl 1 is dividing the sample into smaller parts. I figured this out when I was using the "tape stop" effect followed by a beat repeat and it would leave an open gap. I noticed the open gap isnt there when ctrl 1 is completely open when you do the tape stop.

    also: funny that you post this just after i got a Microgranny to replace my PO33 for pitch-shifting and chopping stuff into my 404OG
    the KO was great of course but it does this strange thing to drum sounds where it feels like it softens the attack a little bit and that's the opposite of what i wanted from it.
