THE MANDALORIAN Pitch Meeting Reaction! | Ryan George

  • Now that we're watching Obi-Wan Kenobi and we've finished with The Book of Boba Fett (which also featured our favorite dad and son duo Din Djarin and Grogu aka Baby Yoda), Ryan George has come out with this hilarious pitch meeting. We can't wait to see more Grogu and Mando action in season 3 of the Mandalorian! Also Andor looks like it could be a fun Star Wars watch as well.

This is my favorite pitch meeting he's ever done. He had his character go on a side quest to comment on The Madalorian's reliance on side quests. But even if you don't want to read it that way, it's just hilarious in its own right. It brings in more of the style of his Ryan George channel, which has a slightly different tone than the Pitch Meeting channel.

My 7 year old has so many baby Yodas. I can't walk five feet without stepping on one. Plus clothes and cups. It's crazy and I'm totally on board because my dad couldn't afford all of the Return Of The Jedi stuff I wanted. So I'm spoiling her because I know she appreciates it.

The Baby Yoda merch was slow to arrive due to holding back any prototyping so the first episode with Grogu would be a total surprise. Prototyping has to be done months in advance and it's the way leaks are started. They immediately began prototyping new toys after the first episode but it pushed their arrival months. So Disney likely lost tons of money purely to hide the Baby Yoda surprise. Disney knew they were going to lose a ton of money early, but knew the impact it would make for the series.

Yes, what you said resonates with me loudly. And it started way back with all the Marvel movies. They spend time introducing new characters and basically promoting upcoming movies than flushing well the actual movie. All this time, I thought the problem was with Marvel studios but now I understand that it's Disney the problem.

I don't watch Star Wars, but I can tell you that the first episode of Netflix's Daredevil has more story, character and setting establishment, and a sense of fulfillment, than the whole of Secret Invasion. It's like you can feel that people have cared about this project, and have worked hard to make it the best it can be with whatever means they were provided. Which is very sad, since Fury and Hill are two of my favorite MCU characters.

  • @kj-marslander

I've got Grogu figures and plushies of different sizes, socks, a baseball cap. I had a t-shirt but I can't find it. I reckon my Sister nicked it.
There was a massive dry spell before the merch started dropping though, and I think it only added to people's desire for the stuff.
In terms of leaks, hasbro and other toy-manufacturers are frequently responsible for spoilers in shows and films, because prototypes of the figures get leaked very early on. Even when they don't leak, toy-companies put up pre-orders, or stores like walmart leak listings for upcoming products many months, sometimes over a year, in advance. I think, in the end, Disney made the right choice.

Yes, Disney deliberately held back on telling toy companies about Baby Yoda so that it wouldn’t leak. That being said, when MANDALORIAN came out it took the companies a while to create the toy concepts, toy ideas, approvals and produce the toys which is why most of the toys came out right before season 2

I definitely agree with what you said about Disney+ shows, specially the ones related to Star Wars. I still haven't finished the Mandalorian season 2, even if I liked what I've seen so far. As it's the same formula but not in a completely satisfying way (unlike most Marvel MCU stuff that is similar, BUT satisfying). It's also the same formula Star Wars has been following since the beginning (or at least from what I remember of the first 2 trilogies). It's enjoyable if you watch one movie every couple of years, but it gets tiresome if you watch that stuff more often. At least for me. It's like the movies from phase 1 of the MCU. Except for Avengers and Captain America, the rest of them I only watched them once (and I fell asleep on 2 of them).

  • @jjstarrprod

For how Disney didn't make Baby Yoda Merch, I think Jon Favreau was to "blame" (or more like praised) for it. Coming from Marvel (actually, being the one who kickstarted the whole franchise), he knew by firsthand experience that toys merch leaks are the one surefire way to leak anything and any surprise guest that's gonna appear in your show or movie. So I'm fairly sure he's the one that ordered 66 on the baby yoda merch and killed it in the egg before it became a potential leak. He really wanted the world to be taken by storm by the reveal of the first episode, and he was totally right ! Without this surprise reveal, I feel like the Mandalorian would not have half the instant cult classic status it has gotten when it came out.
Also, the series was not necessarily bracing for impact to become such an instant cult classic. Don't forget that when it came out, people were still reeling from the impact of the Last Jedi, and by that time, half the fandom had already quit star Wars altogether, their passions extinguished by the horrid one-two punches that were Force Awakens and Last Jedi (and ho boy, they were in a wild ride with the incoming Rise of Skywalker), so a lot of people had completely lost hope on Disney Star Wars at that point.
Besides, Mandalorian was "just" a Disney+ series, a little side project that Kathleen Kennedy didn't even look too much at, since she was so busy with her "Force is Female" trilogy, so there were not even that much marketing going into it. And all these conditions made it quite a tall order for Mandalorian to pull off such a miracle. But as we know, the rest is history.
And afterwards, there was an interesting side effect with the fact they didn't prepare any merch about baby Yoda : After the instant cult classic reveal, EVERYBODY in the WORLD was craving some Baby Yoda toys... and there were none in sight ! Which made people craving for it even more and created such a massive demand that wouldn't be quenched for years to come !
So in the end, sure, it might have cost Disney a few millions for the first year, but I believe they already waaay more than made up for it already by now and for the years if not decades to come.
I wouldn't be surprised if for these past 2 years, baby yodas merchs have been selling more than Mickey merch.

I agree. A lot of these are just ads for everything next and there's no real character/world-building. That's the thing I like about Ms. Marvel so far. There's just so much we know about each of them already and it feels lived in.

There are zero hypothetical universes where Disney did not instantly know that Grogu would make them billions of dollars. Which is the only reasonable explanation for why they decided on this "act of kindness to fans" - holding off on ordering a gazillion hats, mugs, toys and everything until after the pilot had aired.

  • @terminatrix92
    @terminatrix92 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I don't think Disney mini-series are 'just candy'. Look at Wandavision. With 8 episodes it told a story literally about sitcom tv whilst also exploring grief. A film could not do that. And you have to remember the negative reception Netflix series got for being too drawn out and that was with 13 episodes a season. Agents of Shield did 24 a season and 20 of those sucked! That's why Im looking forward to She-Hulk; its an 8 episode law procedural rather than a cheap movie split into 6 parts (Falcon and the Winter Soldier). I want the shows to celebrate the medium and ground the movies.

In defense of SW and Marvel fans who dislike several of the recent movies and TV shows ... they complain of poor plots with inferior writing, bait-and-switch tricks by Disney and the disrespect paid to beloved characters. Politics has nothing to do with their complaints - but it appears to have everything to do with Disney's programming choices.

Baby yoda is the nickname because his real name would reveal later in season 2. That's why most still call him baby yoda, but he's not Yoda, ok?

Yeah, I know what you mean. The story is kinda surface level and leaves us wanting something deeper. I still liked the show, its fun to watch.

Of course Disney knew how much money they would be making off Baby Yoda merch (and guess why Leia has that baby droid Lola?). I don't feel that these shows feel like commercials, though. And yes ... Star Wars is candy. Just adventures in a cool world. It never was really deep. When it tried, it got boring (yay ... trade disputes!).

Yeah, it sounds like Ryan George was asked for the longest time to do Mandalorian, and he finally said "fine!" and basically did a spite review, his review was basically $$$ and repetitive episodes, which isn't really true, but it was still a funny video not just a crap on fest like the recent Screen Junkies videos.

Yes, we already knew Disney loves making money and is ok with it and doesn't care what people say about merchandising and cash grabs because they grabs a lot of cash. For some reason.
That's how I took Producer Guy's self realization.

The feeling of being unsatisfied after Disney+ shows Jaby is referring to is due to the fact that they SUCK! (With the exception of Mandolorian). I’ve personally seen plenty of shows with 6-8 episodes that were completely fulfilling - Luther comes to mind as one example

    You are right Jaby.
Both Marvel and Star Wars have doing a lot of Bait and Switch lately.
Look at Kenobi for instance. Watching the trailers they really pushed the whole Obi-Wan as Luke's protector storyline. Now, after 4 episodes the whole story so far has been about Leia, Revatio and Obi-Wan.

I genuinely don't care for any of the Star Wars stuff, the movies bored me, the show did little for me and Baby Yoda, while cute, is not that impactful when I can just watch puppy videos to get a similar or stronger dose of cute. So for me the best part about the entire franchise is this pitch meeting. It's not that I hate it, I just can't get into it, it doesn't gel with me. Maybe it's because I didn't see it when I was young nor did (m)any people around me, so Star Wars was never really a thing growing up.

I didn't get the hype around The Mandalorian at all. I thought it was very mediocre. It had some cool concepts but it felt very disjointed and slow paced. 8 side quests in a row doesn't really make a coherent story to me. Like the whole Mandalorian group he's a part of sounded intriguing at first but they just sat around in a basement talking.

Kathleen Kennedy *might* be the answer. She brought all the right people together but did not fully support the decisions being made. She gave Dave & Jon the creative control... but that was it. Sounds fanboy-ish sure, but the majority that has happened since only makes such a view more logical. Including commentary reels & photo shoots.

Disney doesn't make the merch.. they have third parties who buy the right to it... so if you want to have merch, you are going to have leaks... unless you wait, which is what Disney did to avoid the leaks.
    at a cost.

2 years late to the comments section. Unpopular minority opinion. But here goes. I'm probably just one of a few who actually dislike the Mandalorian. When I was a kid the Bill Bixby Incredible Hulk series did loner wanders into small town and saves the day really well. At least to the 8 or 9 year old version of me. Now when I see it done as a plot device in Mando, I'm just bored. Plus the writing/acting reminds me of the Xena:Warrior Princess series. And the cringe/cheese level gets really high whenever they say "This is the way." Maybe someone else reading my comment will agree, or at least, not feel "alone" in their dislike of this and MOST of "Star Wars TV."

Here's the thing these shows are not shows they are movies broken up onto parts so they look like a show and they play out as a movie just look close you'll actually start to see it, Disney is destroying marvel and star wars just think about the first iron man it's a hero who gets his powers because he works hard for it now Disney marvel just give characters powers they don't actually work for it
