Excellent review Brother. I've always been a Honda guy, and have ridden their dirt bikes for decades. Not impressed with the newer bikes and issues they're having. Seems they have some work ahead of them to step up and hit one home on these.
I agree with the rear suspension issues, but you can jump it level if you learn to approach it right. I was sending mine at the dunes last week (100% stock with no adjustment) and I was landing and flying perfect. Flying them through the air takes driver control no matter your suspension set up.
Shock therapy has gone over the rough rear end issue, the fix they found works great is to put weight on the back. Like spare tire and carrier it won't pogo off woops and will help with nose diving on jumps.
I would agree with almost all of it. The only exception I would not is the fact that when you go to a bigger size tire, you do in fact risk some potential u-joint issues. If I was going to a larger tire, I would go to a more sturdy axle and u-joint as well. I would also point out that your set-up is nice, but it's a total desert runner spec. anyone using those tires in mud can plan on using the winch a lot, you are going to get stuck. My third observation (Again-mud spec) is that I would totally redesign the air-box and utilize a custom built snorkel kit.

Great, honest review. I've ridden with a couple talons but not enough to really have seen them in action a lot. Last ride with one it was overheating on the way back to the truck but we had been through some pretty nasty mud holes so he must have caked his radiator. I'm on my 2nd belt driven side by side and really like them for the riding we do in ky/tn. A gear on gear is more efficient but I worry a little about long term the DCT getting expensive. I like the simplicity of the CVT system and just carry a spare belt which i have yet to need on the trail. I dont have any belt anxiety but I am mindful of how I use it as far as just selecting the right range and not slipping it when climbing obstacles. With that said, I think out West I wouldn't like the CVT quite as well because I think higher speeds and wide open areas is where belt temps can get out of hand and we don't really have that issue here. I dont think any machine is perfect off the floor so the main thing is to be happy with your purchase. Thanks for the video

Nicely done video and review! I'm debating between the YXZ and the Talon for my first SXS purchase. (I have enough issues with the belt around my waist!) With the Talon; is it possible to use the same size tires/rims front and rear? And I gather the track width is narrower in the rear, than in the front. Should the back wheels be fitted with spacers to remedy this? Thanks for any comments!
Hi! I think the talon is the best all around vehicle, the YXZ is a better dune sxs. I have 32/9.5/14 tires on all 4 corners. I run a 6+1 front offset and a 4+3 rear offset because I don’t like wheel spacers.
Well as someone who just purchased a new 2020 sxs I myself weighed the pros and cons on the DCT vs. belt and stuck with the belt for one reason that is a belt is 150 bucks to replace and 30min of your time if you abuse it and the DCT well if something does go wrong its bookoo money to fix/replace and Honda not having a factory turbo also... BUT if its like my '11 Rubicon hondamatic it will never break LOL @ 6k miles so far
Jeff B That’s why i bought a 5yr extended warranty for $1200. I will abuse it and if it breaks, it’s free. I would go through more than $1200 in belts, especially over a 5yr period. I had a Polaris go through 2 belts in one day trying to keep up with me.
Be careful carrying gas cans on your rzr if the heat of the engine can cause the gas to heat up to the flashing point and light your rig on fire. I know this from experience XD. Nice rig btw
Man I bought a 2021 Pioneer with the same issue on the propeller shaft ujoint cap it fell down the drive shaft Honda took care of it it only had 114 miles when fell out
Angel Hernandez This review has nothing to do with bmw, but I’ve been driving bmws for 22yrs. 3 of my 4 are bmw diesel, which are unbelievably reliable. I was also stationed in Germany 9yrs & nothing holds up to 100-170mph daily driving like a bmw diesel. Also, bmw is the only auto manufacturer in the world that produces every single bmw model with a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
@@gravesru ,My Son has one (BMW 330I) I prefer Lexus butt BMW's are pretty amazing. Also I really do only worry about one thing when I'm out with my machine and that's the belt so I still believe I do have anxiety lol especially at the sand dune's here in Utah. I am looking into buying a Honda talon my best freind puchased the 4 door and is having the Jackson turbo installed as we speak.(first one in Utah County)Thank you for your posts and honesty.
Angel Hernandez I hope your friend is ready to have all kinds of issues with the turbo kit. It won’t run properly above 2,000ft. It will run very rich and take a ton of gas.
Now remember you can’t talk bad about JR Turbo. They have a ton of man hour in R&D They have that turbo perfected and that’s why they charge $6K for a $500 turbo. LoL!!! Great review. Look up on Honda’s home page. You can buy a 300+ HP Turbo Honda Civic Type R Crate Motor bran new from Honda for $6K. So what JR is telling me and the rest of us is there is more R&D in developing a single turbo than there is developing a complete engine with a turbo. I’m sorry, but to me that’s funny and I will never believe that. I will never buy a JR Turbo or any other turbo for more than $2K. I payed 6$ K for twin STS turbos on my Ram 1500 4x4 Quad Cab with intercooler and it put 630 HP to the wheels.
Before you continued on your Mexico to Canada trip you checked your valve clearance again. Did you ever have to adjust the clearance on your valves? Or did they check OK.

Honda Talon Turbo Owner really sorry to hear that. And to be honest , I thought you may not be happy bc of the lack of reviews. (Hopes it wasn’t the case) Sucks as that is a pretty large investment...
Stupid question, but how does the Talon on 32s climb STEEP inclines with the I4WD compared to the RZR etc locker diff? That's the only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger is I'm afraid it won't be able to do the steep climbs as well.. plz elaborate if you would..
Where do you ride in CO. I live in Texas but also have a place near Salida CO. I have a 2019 1000X and have much the same thoughts as you do. I was going to get the turbo, but after thinking about it I've decided I'd rather have the Live Value version of the X.
I am new to utv,s. I am surprised that the quality falls short. Is there a tuner that will tune the engine and calibrate the tire size without a turbo. Also do utv,s require valve adjustments thanks and have a good one from West Tennessee
I do believe the Talon is the best all around sport utv and has the best quality. The talon rarely needs the valves adjusted, typically just when people run a cheaper air filter that lets dust through. I do believe there’s an aftermarket kit to adjust the speedometer. Most people just add 10% for 32’s to the speed/miles.
Thank you for this video. I had an odyssey 350 that was quite an amazing piece of engineering back in the day. I am wondering if you have had to replace any wear items like bushings? Polaris seems to shred those, I would think (hope) that honda has overbuilt theirs? I wonder if the larger tires you are running (rotating mass) contribute to the lessened braking abilities? If honda fixes your issues these will be really good in 2-3 years. Is there a special aparatus to fill shocks with nitrogen?
yeah and the fact that when you drop $25,000 for a base model you have to drop another $5,000 to get what should be equipped on the machine. nickel and dime you for everything I'm surprised it comes with headlights
Great video! Main reason I bought my Yamaha YXZ was the real gear on gear transmission. No belts for me! On a side note...I feel the 19-20 YXZ SS is the best SxS on the market. From a reliability..quality..comfort and price standpoint.
DUNE YXZ It could be. A guy I ride with occasionally has a YXZ. He got stuck in the snow and burnt his clutch. I can’t remember how much he paid to have it repaired. He actually wants to buy a Talon now.
DUNE YXZ The u joint with the Talon is a problem, but hundreds of Talons haven’t had one go out yet. There’s a guy with 16k miles on his talon and hasn’t had an issue yet. The YXZ typically doesn’t have clutch issues if driven correctly, but like a car, you can burn a clutch with a bad driver. With the Talon, even a bad driver can’t hurt the dct.
Christopher Polvoorde I love your talon too, it’s a little different than mine! I can’t even drive mine if I’m above 2,000 feet elevation because the turbo kit makes it run wayyyyyy too rich. Jackson Racing keeps promising to deliver a fix for it, 3 months and nothing so far.
Hey dude great review, the talon I'm looking at has the Fox live valve suspension is it worth the extra cost? Do you have any experience or heard anything about it?
@@gravesru I live in Colorado too, do you recommend a turbo?? Or will a exhaust intake and tune make a big difference. I did the big 3 in all my quads and I'm pretty happy with it idk if its the same with a sxs
La vida del Ranchero The turbo kit has had elevation issues. But Jackson racing released a software update to fix it, but I haven’t tested it out yet. Definitely need a turbo, especially if you want bigger than 28” tires!!
Hey so I have a question for you and hope it gets answered....is the turbo kit that you got from Honda? If so, was it worth it to get it installed....I would like to add that when I decide to pull trigger on the X4LV
Id there a better SXS ? You seem to really have a lot of issues with the Honda. Are you an engineer ? Thanks for the video. I have a Can Am and the Honda TalonR, like them both for different reasons. The Honda is built better than the Can Am.
@@mcs1767 the steering rack on the R doesn’t turn as far. So people have put a X steering rack on their R so it turns more, and it binds up the outer joint on the axle & causes damage. I don’t think there’s a fix for it

If you live in snow country, you can only drive it half the year. All the trails where I live are groomed snowmobile trails in winter. They don’t take kindly to the trails being destroyed by bikes. I put 2000 kms on my pioneer 1000 the first summer. I didn’t think that was too bad. 6000 miles is 10,000 kms. You must drive it to work all year round.

Really!!, you would buy another Talon R 1000? Spend $500 on a particle separator, factory suspension is absolutely horrible, (spend $2,000+ and still not that great), weak breaks, inner retaining clip falls out, cup falls out of the U-joint,"bang, bang, bang", 3rd driveline in one year, front windshield rusting, frame paint pealing, worthless side mirrors, small gas tank, rides really hard. I admire your honesty, but why would you buy a SXS, spend $25,000+ with a turbo and accessories (guessing on price) and have to spend another 3-$5,000 to keep the engine from getting destroyed form dust and trying to make the ride tolerable??? Ok, so you really like the DCT transmission so you won't get stranded out in the boonies........I have owned a 2004 Kawasaki Brute Force 650 since it was new and have logged over 10,000 hard riding miles on it. I have replaced my belt only once in 16 years. My stock foam oiled air filter has NEVER been replaced. I clean and re-oil it about every 1,000 miles. I do most of my riding on very dusty mountain trails and large sand desert washes here in Kingman, AZ. My drive-line has never been in the shop and my engine pulls like a "raped ape" And I would buy one again! Thanks for your honesty!
Scott Young you cant compare an 04 brute to a talon. The abuse I put my talon through, your brute isn’t even capable of doing. Hit a jump at 70mph and fly 90ft in your Brute and see what happens. Pull a Tacoma pickup over 3 miles up and down hills and see how your clutch and belt likes that.
@@gravesru I never could understand why people have to push the limits of their machines and themselves to this degree? yes exactly you dont ride your machine like this owner does, there are alot of machines when run under normal conditions like yourself ride that last thousands of miles without incident.
Jeez....what the heck, Honda? That seems like a lot of mistakes in the engineering department. The MSRP should be half of what it is. CF Moto Z8 The particle separator is by far the best way to go. When you add additional filters, you’re restricting air flow. And you definitely won’t be able to go a couple thousand miles between cleaning. The Jackson racing air box has a foam sleeve and a filter. Both need to be cleaned every 300 miles. Buy a particle separator.
CF Moto Z8 the particle separator removes 95% of dust. You still use the factory air box. The air box is above the engine which doesn’t matter, it’s just important where it sucks air from.

Jeff B That’s why i bought a 5yr extended warranty for $1200. I will abuse it and if it breaks, it’s free. I would go through more than $1200 in belts, especially over a 5yr period. I had a Polaris go through 2 belts in one day trying to keep up with me.
@@gravesru There ya go then :) a day on the trails beats working any day!! stay safe out there
Be careful carrying gas cans on your rzr if the heat of the engine can cause the gas to heat up to the flashing point and light your rig on fire. I know this from experience XD. Nice rig btw

Man I bought a 2021 Pioneer with the same issue on the propeller shaft ujoint cap it fell down the drive shaft Honda took care of it it only had 114 miles when fell out
Interesting. I didn’t know the pioneer had the same problem!
Buys Honda for reliability but owns BMW's ??? Still great honest review thank you.
Very informative thought out review.. thanks , waiting on the dealership to call to pick mine up .
Thanks for watching!
You can get a snorkel kit to solve the air intake dust thing. Great for deep water too.
A snorkel helps, but it’s not nearly as good as a particle separator
Thanks for watching!
Before you continued on your Mexico to Canada trip you checked your valve clearance again. Did you ever have to adjust the clearance on your valves? Or did they check OK.

When will you be releasing video on turbo system mentioned in this video? Thanks
I did release the video, then I deleted it because the issues have been resolved
Bro, you put up some extremely informative videos. One question.... why no significant riding or turbo review videos??? Thx
Jerry Carter I would love to make riding videos but they DON’T turn out very good. The videos make it look far less steep than it actually is and I don’t have any good equipment besides my phone. I’m just a small timer. Thanks for watching though!
Honda Talon Turbo Owner that’s understandable. Are you happy with the Turbuh....? Your videos are awesome.....
Jerry Carter I’m not happy at all. It doesn’t run right above 2k ft elevation. My next video will be of the turbo issues and why I don’t recommend it.
Honda Talon Turbo Owner really sorry to hear that. And to be honest , I thought you may not be happy bc of the lack of reviews. (Hopes it wasn’t the case) Sucks as that is a pretty large investment...
Jerry Carter I just want to be very thorough when I make a review. Like 3-4 months and hundreds of miles.
Stupid question, but how does the Talon on 32s climb STEEP inclines with the I4WD compared to the RZR etc locker diff? That's the only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger is I'm afraid it won't be able to do the steep climbs as well.. plz elaborate if you would..
I’m extremely impressed and very happy with i4wd!
@@gravesru would you say it climbs the steep stuff just as well as the rzrs locker differentials?
Jordan Chitwood yes, I do believe so!
what is your thoughts on the bolt on turbo kit? Top speed? Cruising speed?
Absolutely love it!! Highly recommend it!
Where do you ride in CO. I live in Texas but also have a place near Salida CO. I have a 2019 1000X and have much the same thoughts as you do. I was going to get the turbo, but after thinking about it I've decided I'd rather have the Live Value version of the X.
mcs1 That isn’t far away, I live in Colorado Springs!
quality review thank you! i' watch another one on your bmw!
I’m definitely a bmw fan
I have 10k miles on mine now and it’s holding up great. I replaced the front driveshaft twice and that’s it for repairs. The talon is a great machine

Honda Talon Turbo Owner Wow! We have four YXZ’s in our group with high miles and not one problem...
Honda Talon Turbo Owner Very true. My buddy has a Talon...no problems yet!
DUNE YXZ I think the Talon or YXZ is far better than any CVT sxs.
I love my talon
Christopher Polvoorde I love your talon too, it’s a little different than mine! I can’t even drive mine if I’m above 2,000 feet elevation because the turbo kit makes it run wayyyyyy too rich. Jackson Racing keeps promising to deliver a fix for it, 3 months and nothing so far.

Hey dude great review, the talon I'm looking at has the Fox live valve suspension is it worth the extra cost? Do you have any experience or heard anything about it?
La vida del Ranchero I would 100% pay extra for the live valve!
@@gravesru Thanks for the reply, how noise is the sand b particle separator?
La vida del Ranchero it’s loud, but with a rear panel I can’t hear it.

I think the talon is the best all around sxs out there. Some other sxs are better in certain areas. But every sxs has issues.
I just bought a 2021 1000 R live valve model. I had a 2019 1000 X. Do you know of any way to improve the 1000 R turning radius?
Not to my knowledge. If it turns any sharper, it will bind your front axles and cause damage
@@gravesru I believe my 1000 X turned a little sharper. Wonder what the difference is.
@@mcs1767 the X definitely turns sharper! The axles are different. That’s my only complaint with the R, bad turning radius.
@@mcs1767 the steering rack on the R doesn’t turn as far. So people have put a X steering rack on their R so it turns more, and it binds up the outer joint on the axle & causes damage. I don’t think there’s a fix for it

Some people do 500 miles a year
If you live in snow country, you can only drive it half the year.

My drive-line has never been in the shop and my engine pulls like a "raped ape"
And I would buy one again!
Jeez....what the heck, Honda? That seems like a lot of mistakes in the engineering department. The MSRP should be half of what it is. By the time you fix all the mistakes made by Honda your in the hole for a few grand. I think I'd rather go with a Can Am and do the performance mods myself. Cool little side-by-side though. First comment whoop whoop
Awesome!
Nice looking car though.
Connect an after market pre air cleaner to the air box, for the fraction of the price! Problem solved!
Honda Talon Turbo Owner a pre air cleaner isn’t a filter! Check out Donaldson Top spin!
CF Moto Z8 Yes! I misread your first comment! I do highly recommend the particle separator though
Honda Talon Turbo Owner does the particle separator also replaces the factory air Box? Where was the factory airbox located?
CF Moto Z8 the particle separator removes 95% of dust. You still use the factory air box. The air box is above the engine which doesn’t matter, it’s just important where it sucks air from.
