So i've had the same problem, what i've found out after i washed underneath my truck. The next morning it had a service 4x4 light. The problem is that the plastic cover isn't sealed good enough and water gets inside and causes problems. Just reseal the cover with silicone on a new unit. Should last way longer.
The battery place used a tooth brush and alcohol to clean soldered things. I had an electronic speed controller act up and I found dirt or something on the circuit board. I brushed it off and the ESC works normally again.
