Great video! In fact the best detailed video I've seen so far in relation with the U joint. I will be doing this pretty soon on my '14 2500 Ram🥴 Good vibes your way🤙 thanks again for the vid!!
I've got a 2nd Gen 2500 I'm getting ready to do this same job on. I'm super jealous your hub came out with some hammer work, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to do use the power steering and a 1/2" socket to get my hub off. Great video!
Just got done doing a Pass. front Ujoint on a 03 2500..... I have NEVER had such an issue with a Ujoint IN MY LIFE. Ive been doing this for almost 15 years and have never come across a more stubborn Ujoint. I Literally had to take the grinder out and chop the Ujoint out and bust the caps through backwards. I used a press, PB, FIRE, more fire, more PB and ALOT of hammer. Finally got fed up with it not budging a cm. Ive done hundreds of Ujoints, easily. Usually throw em on a vice, take the c clips out and a few whhaapps with a hammer and bam job done 20 maybe 30 minutes max.... NOPE, not this one. 2 and a half **hours** later got the grinder out. BTW a 6" diam. grinder wheel can fit all the way around a Ujoint without damaging the ears :) The more you know :)
Dang man that’s rough. You did pull the retainer clips on the inside of the ears right? I definitely pressed on one for a while wondering why it wouldn’t budge before I found where the clips were located. They were gunked up with grease and dirt so I couldn’t see them at first glance. Glad you finally got it sorted.
First off thank you for a well filmed and informative video. Clear, easy to see hear etc! is there a reason that you need to take off the hub? once you remove the 4 bolts holding it all in would it not come out together just the same? I imagine it would be heavier and more awkward to work with? Also I have watched your video as well as a couple of others. Some of the hub assemblies were stuck in there a lot harder. Would it not make sense to clean it extra good and perhaps apply some no seize where it goes in? Thank you, Cheers Ross
As long as you can get the whole assembly into and out of your press, I think it would work. It would be hard to manage by yourself I would think. Let me know how it goes, I’m sure this won’t be my last time swapping u-joints.
Great video, exactly what I’m up against! Three questions for you did you need to work on a wheel bearings? And did you consider replacing the axle seals? If so, how do they get to get to? Thank you, Mike.
@@south_coast I found out one of our Mechanics where I work does work on the side right there where I work, I gave him the keys when we headed out to work on Interstate 75, He sent me a message about 2 hours later saying everything was completed. Only charge me $150 it was so worth it.
@@south_coast Thanks for the reply! I saw a guy remove the axle with the hub still on it and didn't know if that was a good (or right) way to do it...??
I saw your zerk fitting was on the axle side instead of the wheel side. Does that matter? Changing mine now and the zerk hits the yoke first if I rotate it all the way that direction. Dont want to snap the zerk off the first time I take a right turn.
@@south_coast Thanks. Looks like the zerk will hit first no matter which way it's installed so something else in the steering system must be the limiting factor that prevents that.
i have a question i tried to put my axle back in and the gear in the shaft is kinda down from where it should be keeping the axle from going in all the way. Any tricks to get it all the way in
It is a little tricky to get it back in there. I had to sort of leverage it in by pushing the outer end of the axle shaft down to get the other end to go up and into the center carrier. Basically use it like a see-saw while rotating it slightly to get the splines to line up.
Ok new problem with my Ram 2500. Any Radio people in here? Radio will be playing then out of nowhere it will turn to Static, Sometimes if I hit the dashboard it will come back on. I have taken it out and made sure all wires were connected. Any suggestions. Thanks
It means your differential is unlocked and you don't have 4-wheel drive engaged. If you engage 4-wheel drive it shouldn't spin with the other wheel on the ground.
Thers a lot of videos out ther when i searched for this but urs has the best info just what i needed thanks a lot
Thanks for dropping a comment to let me know. I appreciate it!
Awesome Video.. I appreciate the amount of detail you and time you put in.. Well Done..

Good luck. Hopefully it doesn’t fight you too much.
Every mechanic in the rust belt is hating how easy that hub came out 😂
Ha. Yeah we get some salt in the air off the coast, but nothing like the rust belt folks deal with!

Greatly helpful video and narration.. Thankyou❗️
Glad it was helpful for you.
Thanks...just saved me a bunch of money.
Good deal, glad it helped you out!
your a hard worker great job. you seems super focus thats great i have the 2500 doge mega cab going to be doing all that.
Thanks for the complement. Hope it goes smooth for ya.
i though it was smart to grind a corner of the end cap to remove it. i don't think ive seen others do that that would save time.@@south_coast
Thanks for the video!!

I thought about it, but from what I figured they would have to be swapped out from the inside, so I decided against it. No issues so far.
Thanks a bunch, Local shop wanted to charge me $5400 to change out both sides on my 2011 Ram 2500
Glad the video could help you out. It’s not the easiest job, but it definitely beats paying $5400
Woah! That is robbery regardless of how much of a bear the job is to do.

@@Omek1972 Yes it is. Ended up only paying $150 to one of our Mechanics that does work on the side.
Nice. Sounds like a solid deal.
Having trouble with the inner clip. Saw this and watch you take it off like opening a beer. Geez! OK I'm going back to the garage.
Don't be fooled, I definitely spent some time fighting them in the past before I figured out how to pop them off like this.
@south_coast I pressed the joint a little and used a small punch. They were in there.
Great video! Do you have to remove the hub assembly or can you remove the whole axle shaft with the hub still on it? THANKS!
Yeah I removed the wheel, caliper, rotor, and hub….then the whole axle can be pulled out.
@@south_coast Thanks for the reply! I saw a guy remove the axle with the hub still on it and didn't know if that was a good (or right) way to do it...??
Did you buy your U joints parts at the original Ram store or at the regular auto parts store?
I got mine from Amazon. Check the description for a link

I’m going to have to be honest. I don’t think I look at the zerks with the wheel turned all the way, but I have t had any issues so far with mine.

Hmm that’s a new one to me. It happens when you are listening to FM radio only or does it do it regardless of the audio source?
Have a question my hub still spins with the other side still on the ground what does that mean
