Dodge Ram transfer case replacement

  • This is the replacement of a transfer case in a 2008 Dodge Ram. This truck has 279,000 miles on it and its been a plow truck its entire life. I also pull heavy trailers with it so it's amazing the original engine, trans, and transfer case lasted this long! The reason for replacing the transfer case was the chain that drives the front driveshaft was stretched and would skip under heavy load while in four wheel drive.

Nice video. Obviously you make it look easier than it is because of skill and experience but it's awsome you put this out there for people like me to enjoy. Great information! Much appreciated

Just a question if u have time. I have a 2000 dodge ram 1500 with 5.9 4x4. Did you ever hear like a really quite grinding in 2 hi when going forward? Even when not started if I put it in neutral and roll it forward with my feet I can hear it making a light grinding noise? If I move my 4x4 gear handle a little forward or backward it will go away pulling forward. Could it be a adjustment on transfer case lever or transfer case going bad. Going to check fluids see if thats it. Sorry for writing a book. Thanks if u reply. Any info helps.

On the transfer case itself it says not to use a impact wrench. This is one of these times to pay attention. This process is pretty close for 2003- 2009. Only changes is manual controls versus electric. The older manual control transfer case will have the smaller diameter output shaft, but on both it 8s wise to change them to billet as the output shaft has no give and under extreme conditions will break in half. Not a problem for 2wd truck with much longer shaft.

For what you paid for transfer case you could’ve bought new chain and sprockets plus seals for transfer case. Then you know everything is new. Your used case could have stretched chain too.

My 2005 doesn't look the same the y for the exhaust goes behind the transfer case it doesn't look like there's enough room for it to slide of the trans shaft

5:26 use a 3/8 impact with 15mm matco swivel socket is small enough to make it get the bolts out at the 11 o"clock position save yourself a lot of time if so equipped .

You use this as a plow truck but the underside has very little rust ... how?

I have a heated shop and I wash my vehicles including the underside once a week in the winter. Keeping the salt off helps immensely!

I can't believe you didn't replace the seals between trans and transfer case. Rear seal no problem! But the other two should have been replaced.

Just bought a 1500 with 5.7 because it needs a transfer case.
    250,000 on original parts.
It only moves in 4 wheel drive.

Always pull fill plug first just in case it doesn't come out then you drained your case and have no way to fill it

Do you remember how much torque you put on the stud nuts that hold the t-case to the trans? Also, did you use any loctite?

You dont have to move the trans mount. A 12 point 14 mm wrench gets into the crevice on the lower driver side nut. You have to spin it 1/24 of a turn then flip it then another 1/24 and go back and forth

    • @kevinnaylor5737
      @kevinnaylor5737 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Once you get it broke loose you can get in there with a shorter 14 and get more out of every turn.

@@kevinnaylor5737 doubt you will see this given it was so long ago but I can't figure out where the damn thing is at and am about to take the mount off out of frustration.
