A technique I came across recently that I thought I'd share, really blew my mind, and the few pro machinists listening as well. If you're surface grinding a part and, for whatever reason, none of the surfaces are close enough to "flat" for your liking, or you've flipped it over a few times and seem to be chasing a high or low you can't pin down, try this. Take one (or 2 stacked sheets, depending) of paper towel or shop towel, and soak in water. Lay them between the part and mag chuck and magnetize. Depending how janky the part is, you might want to take a light pass, flip, light pass, flip, etc. just until there aren't really deep lows or highs. The science behind this being, the saturated towel will help even out the highs and lows by allowing highs to sink further into the towel. Also, from what I've seen of this trick, for whatever reason the finish will be so much better than normal! 🤔
Great video enjoyed that 1 , love to see the shaper working Hey did anyone else start laughing at 19:22 ? You had your eye on that shaper like a lab watching a tennis ball 😂
If the scraping straightedge was for a 60 degree dovetail on a lathe cross slide, seems like cutting a 45 degree bevel one side would work well, & not have removed that much material, & would have probably been fine for a short dovetail.. anything will bend slightly. Also, a lighter straightedge can have better feel spotting a small surface, especially in a corner. Great to see some satisfying small projects!
As always, an excellent presentation! It is a wonderful example of the utility of ‘tools gone by’. An “old” machinist often told me… “You can make ANYTHING with a shaper, EXCEPT, money!!!”. LOL 😂
I'll bet machine operator in China runs 3, 4, or 5 scrapers at a time, and sharpen the tools while they're all running. So I'm thinking they can make a buck off those old machines with very cheap tooling.
I think it's time to bring miss grand daughter for a shop visit 😊. You have plenty of heat(wood burner), security(cora), and of course Grand Ma Elizabeth ❤
I don't feel the same, everything has it's time and I don't get what a small child would get out of being in the garage as a toddler. At least I would put the cameras in a closet... Like to point out that these are my thoughts and what people do or don't is up to themselves. But easier to be safe than sorry...

Great content to wrap up ole 2023. I know we all can't wait to see the apple of your eye when she's hanging out in the shop with you and Korey,,,🙂Our oldest son is coming to help old pops finish some long over due projects and cars, but one will be the 450mm Klopp. I send him links to your channel and other creators with shapers, and hopeful he will come to be addicted once he mills his first piece on mine (@@)! Decafe Coffee, now I learned something! When Stan & Phil dropped in back last March, Stan told me that hand sanitizer was also a great coolant. Have you tried it? My bucket list still has me coming up to see you and Brian Block. Save some of that decafe coffee for me,,,hehe! Bear.
I have been a subscriber for a few years now and have watched the transformation of the shop, my favorite series, to new machines, BUT the best addition to the shop I think has been Cora. She is so beautiful and loving. I am glad you did not find her a new home, but made your home hers too. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO THE ENTIRE SUMMERS FAMILY.
Good job somebody''s found a good use for decaf. coffee, sure beats drinkin' the stuff! A Very Happy New Year to you and all your family and friends from Somerset, England.
I just recently found your TH-cam channel when i was searching how to build your own trailer, im hooked !! You have a soothing voice kinda like Bob Ross the painter, and your explanation of your work is excellent!! Thanks for sharing 😎
Hope you had a wonderful CHRISTMAS. A very interesting and knowledgeable video. Always learn something and where there's will there's a way to get it done. Hope you all have a great NEW YEAR.
Little shop projects are quite satisfying. My next one is 4 hold down clamps for the new toolmaker vise. Might try the case hardening trick with Cherry Red.
Excellent video! To your point on the speed of the shaper.....for many jobs, the shaper is actually faster- I recently cut the head of an outboard motor, & it was 1/3 of the time on the shaper, vs my mill. Happy New Year from across the river in Missouri-
Steve and Cora: Hello from Thailand and thank you for the video. I hope your entire family had a pleasant and peaceful holiday season! Loved watching the ol Cincy scraper at work! Frank
When you put the bench windows in during your shop rebuild I thought that was a mistake. But they have lasted and I really like the light they bring in and the relaxing view they provide. Happy New Year and blessings to you and your family!
Hi Steve. One more day to a brand new year. I am really looking foreword to it and seeing what you have coming down the pike my friend. I have always liked the shaper. Simple and it can be the only machine for some operations. Yours is in particularly good shape. Both to the looks but more importantly it's nice and tight. It sure is nice to watch you in machinist mode. LOL, You should see your face when you mentioned your granddaughter. You pretty much melted right in front of us. I can see what is coming for the two of you. She will have you wrapped around her pinky finger bigtime, LOL. Tanks a bunch my friend. See you next year eh.
That’s really wild on the difference between the ball slides and the regular v-ways. I would have definitely thought the ball slide would be superior, but your grind quality didn’t lie! Very interesting!
When in good shape the ball ways do a great job. The B&S is just in better shape. That could also be an issue with the spindle, not the ways. It's hard to tell unless you have seen the ways and really torn into it.
@@moosesmachinery I did consider that it’s possible that in “good (or great) shape” the ball slides might easily outperform. It’s just that in bad shape, the problems could be exacerbated. Thanks for that comment! Helps me to learn
Thank you Steve for all the wonderful content. I love the variety and your presentation, always to the point but never to busy to miss the opportunity for some kind of hoax or jest ;) All the best to you and your family including your newer arrival, that's very nice news.
Seeing you start up the shaper reminds me of engineers working on marine triple expansion engine startups. Great video Steve. Best from the UK, Happy New Year.
Well done, Steve. Sometimes the most simple jobs or let's say "fixes" give you most satisfaction. You know, when something little like some fitting issues bothers you, there is a high probability for unacceptable level of frustration, which down the line makes your work worse. Some starting good mood is mandatory for good results! 😉 Cheers, Happy New Year to you and your family.
It’s important to stress that this MUST be a decaffeinated coffee as caffeine can make your parts warp, especially when working with carbon steel. Happy new year everyone!
Hello anther great video I have been watching your videos for some time now . I was wondering where you get your stones from I see you use them in. A lot of your videos.thanks for your time.
Better giving up on holding that in a 4j than having it become a projectile. Of course that’s never happened to me…🤥. Best to use only the level of accuracy required. I heard once that every increased order of magnitude of accuracy doubles time/cost. It’s probably BS, seems a but too convenient, but it does make a point.
I challenge everyone that reads this to stop saying "good enough"! No matter what it is you're doing, do it the best you can the best way you can. Be proud of the work you've done regardless how small of a job it is.

Everyone watching your channel knows why that handle's fit makes you happy. Thanks for your content. 🙂
Nice of your buddy to take the rust off before giving it to you!
Always feels good to get a handle on things.
Good one , Cheers 👍
Reminds me of This Old Tony talking about his die filer... somewhat obsolete, but damn, it works!
That squeegee of the grinder mag tho 🤙
I loved every minute. Thanks, Stuart 🇦🇺
I love the way long slow cuts of cast iron sound. Not many metalworking machines allow you to hear the material being worked.
Thank you for sharing.👍
I think using the boring head was a much safer option on clearanceing that crank handle.

Thanks for another great video Grandpa Steve
happy new year and thanks for sharing your video,s.

Good morning friend
When you put the bench windows in during your shop rebuild I thought that was a mistake. But they have lasted and I really like the light they bring in and the relaxing view they provide.
Happy New Year and blessings to you and your family!
Those windows were one of the best decisions I made. Just the light alone is great.
I wish you and your family Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Greetings from Germany.
Indeed, a shaper is NOT slow. It all depends on the person that operates it.
Great to see you buddy👍. You know shapers as well as anyone . They can move fast when you need them too.
Happy New Year Steve and Family. Another great video!
