  • A knife without an edge is just a piece of metal; and in this episode of What Knife Should I Buy, we'll look at some common grinds, as well as discuss some different steel types. This video features different types of knife grinds, such as flat grind, scandi grind, convex grind, hollow grind, and chisel grind. We also explain stainless steels, high carbon steels, and tool steels.

    First of all I'd like to say it's a very enjoyably and informative video for those who don't know so much (yet) but want to. But I had a bit of an inner gigle with Tyson and Mike. Reminds me of a time I met two guys who were named John and Wayne.

    I have a Kershaw 1640 Vapor. Is it a good folder? Also it's hard to open one-handed due to the bearing holding it shut by being pressed into the matching intent in the blade by the frame lock. Any way to make one-handed opening easier?

      Bottom line, trade it for a spyderco. Once you used the spyde-hole to swing your blade open you will never go back.

    how does a-2 hold up against s30v, s35vn, 154cm ??

    • @littlejpl
      @littlejpl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most knife manufactures that use A-2 have the heat treat process for that steel down to perfection. I would put it up agains any of those other steels and probably out preform them with A-2 and its easer to sharpen then the other steels as well.

    What do you think of buck knives?

    • @littlejpl
      @littlejpl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time Buck uses a cheaper grade steel in there knives (420 J and 440 C I think) but again they have the heat treatment process to that cheaper steel down to perfection so it will preform with upper end steel for a while but will eventually not last in the tuff department like the more expensive steels. Not a bad knife but not the best knives but your not paying 150 to 200 dollars for the knife either. For the price I would take a Buck knife any day of the week over any of the cheep knives out there. Buck is starting to make upper end steel knife blade as well.

    How can I identify the material of the knives just by looking at it because in my area , the shopkeeper does not know the quality of the knives himself .

    • @littlejpl
      @littlejpl 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most blade/knife manufactures are proud to have the type of steel used in there knives printed someplace on the blade (not all but most) if you can't find a number of any kind it is probably a cheaper steel being used. This is a very general explanation. Now start looking up all the different kinds of knifes steels used and get really confused lol

    Ill stay to mid priced 50$ knives thanks; 75-100$ knives are useless to me as I hardly use them THAT much. Also carpentry and construction work demands a utility knife not a high end knife.

    I get so tired of hearing that a Scandi grind rolls easier because it doesn't have a secondary bevel. That's complete bull. In the first place, there is no such thing as a single kind of Scandi grind, or of a secondary grind. The thickness of the blade, and the height of the bevel apex makes a huge difference. A Scandi can be every bit as tough, and often a lot tougher, than a blade with a secondary bevel. In many cases, a secondary bevel weakens the edge considerably.

    oh come on, all this different steel debate again?? Tungsten carbide is the best, yes its brittle but it holds the edge forever, non reactive to anything, except diamonds of course, since its harder.. all you need is to shape it by die pressing and injection molding it and use a diamond sand paper then youre done.

    .
    .
    poorly explained... contradictory !!!!
    .
    "the bevel is the cutting edge of the knife" he continues...
    ..."and how it transitions from the spine all the way down..."
    .
    is it the cutting edge or not? as explained in the video the whole fricking blade is the bevel!
    .

    • @BladeHQ
      @BladeHQ  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nice Tele It can be. Knives can have a single bevel that span the entire width of the blade, though most tend to have two. A secondary cutting edge and the larger bevel that gives the blade its shape.
