Mismanagement and rampant doping has ruined the integrity of the sport and the IOC wants a product it can sell not one generating no views at best and scandals on the front page of the internet at worst. To a novice, straps can definitely increase your load since they basically fix the bar to your hand and minimize grip slippage and bridges the gap between poor form and raw strength. Grip can be, especially regarding the snatch, one of the most difficult areas to master when a novice begins their weightlifting journey. To experts like all of these folks, the straps provide more secure grip, yes, but are mainly for maintaining the training of throwing around ultra heavy loads. Their form is virtually perfect, so what they aim to train is being able to add more load to their movements. The straps let them push past their limits slightly and touch repeatedly on heavy numbers without the issue of grip fatigue. When competing, they are only exerting themselves (and grip) for a few attempts and the weight/spacing/recovery is all calculated. However, grip can be a make or break for some lifters in competition.
