Old Rusty Belt Knife Restoration

- Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project. Long time ago long ago I was looking for a belt knife for my outdoor adventures. Well, as usual I found this rusty knife at flea market, price was USD $1. First I made decision made something in dark style. I used a rust remover liquid to remove all rusty. Then due to that knife was not hardening I tempered it in my primitive homemade furnace. Further I used a sandpaper to made clean and shiny surface. Next I used citric acid to give a dark color to the knife blade. Then prepared two similar a pieces of copper for knife handle. Finally, I get good sharp knife now I need to buy leather and make a scabbard. Also, I used steel aluminum and brass rivets for knife handle. For impregnation, I used linseed oil. I hope you enjoy this restoration video.

An easier way to cut with the metal cutting blades is pulling it to you. This prevent the blades moving and is easier and quicker.

You do amazing work. I have to buy older knifes, because I can't afford the good ones they sell now. There's feature my knifes have, which I don't see anymore. The butt end of the handle has a metal plate. It's useful, when you need to pound somthing. I understand why they don't do that as much, anymore. Pounding that way, has you swinging the knife, point outwards. Kind'a dangerous.

Неплохо. Но накладки таки кое-где плохо прилегают к рукояти и больстер, кажется, тоже. Можно было бы подправить это дело эпоксидкой с древесной пылью, а потом еще раз зашлифовать. Но, как по мне, для такого ножа это не критично, особенно учитывая то, каким он был в начале. Очень неплохая работа, надо сказать.

Все замечательно, за исключением одного момента. Не только здесь, но и в целом на всех Ваших работах меня смущает единственная деталь. Было бы замечательно, если бы Вы начали четче обозначать линию, где у клинков начинается спуск. А Вы их зачем-то всегда скругляете. Спасибо.

now, get the leather... or other material, and make a sheath I'd like to see how you manage that. I know how it's done normally, but I bet you'll get creative. with that oven and some salvaged plastic, I bet you could make a plastic sheath. Not as pleasing to the hand and eye as leather, but it would work and could be formed to the blade so it fits tight.

You do brilliant work. I would not have the patience to do all the hand work you do. Why you do so much by hand when you don't have to, I will never understand. I do have a little tip for you, it's a small thing. before you do any staining or the like but have the handle where you want it otherwise, wipe the wood with a damp cloth, I prefer to use alcohol but water will work. Let it dry, the steel wool the handle (or any wood you want a nice smooth surface on) this is called raising the grain. when you sand and shape, littl hair like fibers are created. this takes them off. you may have to repeat this step a couple times to get them all. use like 0000 super fine steel wool to get them off without creating more.
