    You should try to make a way to blow air through the pen itself like an industrial laser table does, it keeps smoke from going up and clouding the lens, and it clears the smoke away from the work area

    Hey Devin, great video. Make sure you're using certified goggles for the wavelength you're using. As a test, while NOT wearing the goggles, shine the laser through them and see if the laser makes a dot on the other side ( maybe put a piece of paper 30cm away ). If it does then they're NO good. We only have one set of peepers. Cheers, JAYTEE

  • @michaelzwahlen5285

    You should double check the rating on your glasses, a properly rated pair of glasses should block ALL light from the laser. Only source glasses from a professional laser safety company, DO NOT trust glasses from amazon. If you can you should get glasses one tier above your laser power just for added safety, so 100W laser range in your case. If you would like more information please ask.

  • @rookyandb
    @rookyandb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Make sure your glasses are rated for an Optical Density of OD4+ and OD5+. If the light is to bright the easiest and safest option would be to put a tinted face shield on in front of your safety glasses, maybe a shade 3 or 5.

    So it's a more dangerous and more expensive version of a wood burning pen. :) Still goid job engineering this device. I've never seen such powerful laser pens (probably because it can easily cripple you lol). Creating is not about why it's about why not.

    • @muselikesminecraft
      @muselikesminecraft 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OZagud actually it would be incredibly difficult to be crippled by this type of laser, unless you purposely pointed it at each of your eyes, making you blind.

    • @shkurka4828
      @shkurka4828 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Face McFaceFace It's easy to point into eyes if you play with it. Even looking at it without goggles is dangerous. Besides, if on maximum settings it can burn your skin, imagine what it can do to your eyeball. Yikes!

    • @muselikesminecraft
      @muselikesminecraft 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Binky D'Eath I'm fully aware of that, and I'm sorry you have to live with the burns, but the guy I was answering made it sound like he was talking about pointing the laser itself at your eyes, and not the dangers of looking at it without proper protection.
      My bad, I should have explained it a bit more, I was just irritated at the hundreds of people talking about how dangerous the laser is in the comments, at the time that I was writing my comment.

  • @sjm4306
    @sjm4306 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Super dangerous but super cool. I'd get better protective eyewear, if it feels like what you are currently using is insufficient it's because it likely is. I'm not sure welding equipment would help since arcs and lasers have entirely different properties, it's best to do some research first.
    Also wondering why you used a mechanical remote trigger when you could've very easily soldered two wires onto the laser button. I think adding a footswitch this way would be very helpful. And I've seen a few people suggest using fiber optics to make the pen body lighter which would be neat but I'm not sure it would work at the power levels you are using.

  • @mechadense
    @mechadense 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    *No welding glasses without correct laserglasses below!!!* While the needed dark electro arc welding glasses filter the secondary blueish-white thermal light out massively the extreme one wavelength intensity of the laser may still go through way too less attenuated. Also you'll need quickly electronic switching welding glasses to see what you are doing. Those likely switch to slow to even provide that little protection the welding glasses could provide.
    Also: Please make sure to always lock the pen away safely. Mentioning laser safety and showing goggles and the *extreme importance to use exactly the right kind for the lasers wavelength* at the begin of the video might be a good idea too.

    Reminds me of my Stencil burning days. Mostly use a soldering iron with different tips to burn into the wood. And also put a safety filter in front of your camera lens. You will burn that sensor the same way you would mess up your eyes.

    Interesting concept - many laser cutters that I have seen pump air through the laser lens/nozzle assembly in order to prevent smoke from being deposited onto the lens - you could try adding a small fan to blow air through the pen barrel, which will also help to move smoke away from directly where you are engraving. Careful though because now that it has been done, laser engraver pens might start hitting the market!

    Devon , why don't you contact Zortrax and ask them to send you the enclosure kit for the m200?
    Btw , next time try giving the wood a light sanding afterwards to get rid of some of those scorching lines or cover the wood with masking tape before you engrave it . This should give you cleaner lines .

    That's fantastic Devin.
    I'm not an expert but I do know that looking at that for longer than a moment or 2 at a time can damage your eyes, just by the brightness alone. A welding mask is a good idea, but not sure it is designed to filter out the correct wavelength.
    I know you're not reckless, but please be careful when you select your eye protection.
    Also, don't rule out any damage that the fumes could do to your eyes too.
    I know I probably sound like an overprotective parent, but I have had arc-eye a few times back in the day, so I know how it feels and the damage that can result. Trust me, severe arc-eye is something you don't want.

    Hey, very cool idea, but I’m a little worried about your safety. If you value your eyesight, then you should not trust those green tinted safety glasses unless they are certified from a reputable source. I work at a research facility and I recently asked our optics lab to check the attenuation on the green glasses that came with a similar laser carver I bought... turns out my cheap glasses did virtually nothing. Either buy some good quality welding goggles or buy some proper laser goggles from an optics supply company. If the laser glasses cost less than $100, they’re probably not going to protect you, and it’s definitely not worth the risk.

    Doing it outside is probably a terrible idea. You can't control the environment as well and if someone or an animal happens to come a little close, you could blind them pretty easily. They might even see a bright light and stare from a distance wondering what you're doing. I'd recommend doing it inside with some sort of exhaust vent. You can use flexible ducting like you use for a dryer exhaust and get an inline fan which is very powerful and then have that going out a window to exhaust the smoke quickly.
    With the flexible ducting, you can maneuver it however you want to be next to your work surface. Welding booths use them with magnets to exhaust smoke and fumes.

    • @seigeengine
      @seigeengine 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I doubt that's a real concern. He's not pointing it at anything that would cause a specular reflectioin, so, short of pointing the laser directly at something, nobody at any distance is going to get enough light to cause damage.

    Dude, talk to Styropyro. He does laser stuff almost exclusively, and is one of the most intelligent people on TH-cam.
    Some things, though.
    Make sure you wear specifically *laser* safety glasses that are tuned to the frequency of the laser you're using. An ultraviolet blocking thing of some sort is also necessary for these higher frequency beams. Without both, you're basically sunburning and/or regular burning your retinas. At the very least, wear sunglasses that block UV.
    LEAD WITH THE SAFETY DISCLAIMERS FFS. You should know as well as anyone that almost nobody watches the full video. I know you're not used to covering things that can permanently injure a person in less than the time it takes to blink, but this is one of them. A certain amount of gravity up front is only appropriate.
    Anyway, enough lecturing. Cool art, happy lasing.

    • @notamouse5630
      @notamouse5630 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      With that amount of light, you need a minimum of OD 4 glasses for the relevant wavelength, preferably OD 6. Welding glasses are wrong because they don't block only the wavelength you don't want to see. Any glasses which would render this safe in a wavelength specific manner would render the user unable to see anything at all.

    I highly reccomend welding goggles. Check out the channel Ave has and he goes through the ratings on welding masks and even compares the cheap one to the nicer ones. Bottom line though go for the Lincoln welding helmet can't really go wrong. Especially if you value your eyesight because the visible wavelengths are not blocked at all by the laser glasses you're currently using. Ultraviolet or near ultraviolet is a fairly dangerous Spectrum. And what others have said get forced air through the tube so that way it doesn't affect the lens you don't want to burn that out and any particles that land on the lens will definitely burn especially at that power level.

    Good project. Start a Kickstarter.
    I think the idea of welding goggles will become a necessary one.
    A long flexible tube with a small fan inside it running up the pen and out a window might help with the smoke. You could mount a power supply fan on to the laser and have one tube going out the front of the fan where the smoke is, and have another tube going out the back of the fan and out a window. It doesn't need to be a strong fan all it needs is to create a tiny pressure difference.

    There are infrared safety glasses you can buy they come with laser levels you use in home renovations..
    They will filter out some of the glare you get from the laser burning 🔥

      Jose Ferreira IR protection is appropriate for CO2 lasers (around 1000nm = Infrared), but these type of diode lasers generate visible light in the 400-500nm range. He was wearing the correct kind of glasses in the previous video (though you can get a lot better quality ones than the cheap ones you get given with the laser itself).

    i hope this goes somewhere int he future because it started with 3d printers and then it went to handheld '3d printers' so now it will goes from a laser cutter to a handheld 'laser cutter' and you will be rich

    When I've used a laser cutter I have noticed that I can get bad headaches from looking at the area the laser is cutting, so use more eye protection. Maybe you can get some welding glass and 3D print some glasses frames for them.
    Regarding the smoke. Smoke can create a deposit on the laser lens and cloud it up, reducing the power of the laser as it goes through it. Just keep using a fan and prevent smoke from filling up the pen.

    The big laser cutters have air blowing though the end to blow the smoke away but it could burn the wood more witch might not look very good.

    Asked my dad (he sells industrial lasers for a living) if this looked dangerous and/or stupid, and he answered: "Jo, rigtig dårlig ide med den laser! Han siger godt nok at han har briller på men hvad med andre i nærheden 😵... der er jo power på! pisse farligt.... puhaaaaa"
    Translation: "Yes, really bad idea with that laser! He does say that he is wearing glasses but what about others nearby 😵 ... there's some power on! pissing dangerous.... wheeehiew"

      That's the worst part about these cheap laser engravers. I have a 1.5W laser pointer, and two 3.5W lasers like he used in this video. They're so fun to play with, but I have to be extremely careful to control the environment. My dogs absolutely refuse to wear safety glasses!

    I'd buy one of these ! lol Awesome Idea !!
    1 upgrade you could do is to take a pin or something similar to fix to the end of the pen and have it as close as possible to where the laser is going to hit at your usual distance, so you know where the laser will shine when completing a line. Heck you could even make it adjustable with measure marks to make things easier.

    Besides the proper goggles, consider a laser proof coating for the gloves.
    That looks powerful enough to rupture large blood vessels and sever tendons and muscles.
    Although it would cauterize a wound. 😐

    Do you think it would be any easier to have the power button on the actual pen, similar to a 3D-Pen? It should be pretty easy to solder on an extension to the existing button.

    what if you were to wrap the areas where the beam is exposed in similar to material to what the glasses are made of and a lip to help with the light reflected off of the wood so the glasses would become mroe of a backup rather than your only protection
