Happy Halloween! This finally concludes the Danganronpa Series, and what a fun run its been. I have mixed feelings on the ending of this and the creative choices taken by the creator. Still, I look forward to seeing his next project under his new company.

So basically the ending was a giant middle finger to the fandom demanding more danganronpa and thus more killing games.

What's funny is that it wasn't even intentional and predicted the fandom's reaction to the game to a T.
Not really, since the “real world” in the game is its own fictional world where people are holding these killing games in reality for entertainment. Whereas the purpose of the Danganronpa games in our world is to tell a fictional story and provide questions and themes regarding the morality of killing and how hope and despair aren’t as black and white as they may seem. Since the games in our world are purely fictional, it isn’t a problem at all (tons of stories tell morbid tales that would never work in our reality). The difference between our world and the game’s “real world”, is that the “real world” blurred the line between reality and fiction, and caused real pain and suffering for “fictional” entertainment. There’s nothing wrong with liking the Danganronpa game series. V3 just presented a world where people took things too far and lost sight of what made the original Danganronpa so special.
It depends on how you read the ending of the story, and in my own case, the "real world" that is described in the game is far different from the one we live in. Since we don't have a company that makes reality TV shows with the killing game as the main selling point. In our world, we are telling a story with each game instead of just watching the killing because we enjoy it: The first game shows how hope and optimism can triumph even in the darkest of times with Makoto acting as the ultimate hope, the second game saying that even if everything seems like a dead-end and there is no win, then you can create your own future. And the final game of Killing Harmony really dives into the question of the morality of the situation in my interpretation: is it okay to kill just for entertainment? Is it okay to host killing games for the entire world to enjoy? And it is left unanswered as most things are in V3, left up to the players to decide
in the end, no, I don't think the ending was a giant middle finger to the fandom, it's asking us to think about the morality of the situation. If the outside world that v3 had spoke of was referring to us and the players, then our world should have matched up to the description- but it doesn't. Currently (and thankfully) people in our world isn't sadistic enough to allow a killing game reality TV show be hosted for mere amusement. This is why V3 is the best in the series for me, even if you think it bashes the players for wanting more Danganronpa, it's only mocking the sadistic people who like this game because people die and are killed in gruesome and creative ways, not the actual majority of the fans who feels empathy for the people that died despite them being fictional- not the same as the people of the "Outside World"

It went too far into recontextualizing the series, into giving it a new meaning it didn't have before and made a lot of what happens in the other games seem much less frightening and real. If the game is just a game and it's acknowledged, it is less compelling.

I think the game was just a huge troll into making you feel complete despair for the characters you cared about throughout the series & then kind of throwing a "what if people in real life took everything from the games too seriously?" scenerio in for kicks? I mean at the end everyone voted hope when we really know that not everyone would really do that. It's like going up to the writer, asking what side they're on & them answering with "let me answer that question with a story....".
This is a game that makes you feel bad for liking it.

I understand what the ending is suppose to do. It wraps up everything but leaves small "hints" that if they want to, they can make another DanganRonpa game after this one.
Like, the whole "this is fiction, you're all fake" is honestly a lie. Tsumugi had to make up something to get the others to go along with her plans. The first game showed us there is hope, even in the most desperate of times. The second game followed up on this but with a more interesting ending. This game showed us that the bad guys learned from their mistakes and now are forcing the students to either continue or just fall into despair, to which Shuichi decides to get past through a "hope" of sorts that others would help stop this game.
There are more ways to continue the game (I can think of 1 or 2 ways) but yeah, this game is great and all. I just don't want it to conclude like this with so many questions being thrown up in the air. Tsumugi CAN cosplay as other people, but she just needed an alibi during the first trial. At least that's what I think.

Alex Molina That’s your mistake though. Trying to connect V3 to the rest of the series will only make you dislike the ending further because the world of hope’s peak and V3’s world are completely different. When they said V3 was a stand alone installment, they weren’t particularly lying because nothing that happens in V3 will impact the story that the Hope’s Peak Universe told. Once you learn to differentiate the two worlds, the ending is much better. And this is coming from someone who wasn’t particularly fond of the ending the first time around. Now I love it

For anyone who didn’t understand the ending, danganronpa in that universe is just a game, the first three games and the anime is just fiction and after more games and anime the games turn into a live-action reality game, where a lot of volunteers are brainwashed and played the game but in the 53th they didn’t vote so the watcher didn’t want to vote to so the game forever ended (just like in real life).

Rantaro was one the participants who sacrificed himself in the last killing game (probably in that killing game he was known as the Ultimate adventurer). The punishment was to participate in the next killing game (that's how he got his tittle as the Ultimate Survivor).
I seriously think that Tsumugi could had been the other participant and that her punishment was to become the next mastermind.
I also think that Tsumugi's real identity during the last killing game could have been the original Kaede Akamatsu but since she was turned into the new mastermind they needed a replacement for her.
So they turned Kaede's twin into the new Kaede Akamatsu againts her will.
That's why, in the prologue, she (as a narrator) said: "I was forced to become a fictional character for that world".
That would also explain why Tsumugi (the real Kaede) couldn't cosplay as the Kaede we knew from V3. Because in V3 the fictional character known as Kaede (which was really Kaede's twin originally forced to become that "character" to replace her) was based on a real person.
Besides Kaede and "Tsumugi" had a lot of similarities in sprites, body type and hairstyle. That's because she was her twin.

What a lot of people seem to forget about is that DRV3 doesn't actually break the 4th wall. At no point does it actually acknowledge that its universe is fictional, or that it's a game. It acknowledges a fictional audience that is not real. We are not the audience in the game.

I think this game's ending was basically exactly what it should've been. And based on it, for as big a fan of the franchise as I am... I think I'm fine with no more new Danganronpa. Considering how the previous games ended, this seemed like the next logical step, and it feels realistically appropriate to boot.

V3 is my favorite in the series~ People say the ending invalidated the rest of the series but I feel like they missed the point. I feel like Kodaka was trying to say just because their fictional doesn't mean they can't leave an impact. Basically, the previous games are NOT pointless.

I think this ending was perfect for Danganronpa, we the player understand we like these games cause we get to watch (mostly) innocent High School kids murder each other, and we tell ourselves it's okay because they're only fictional characters. Shuichi's entire arguement is that reality and fiction CAN affect one another.

It doesn't invalidate the series... I just think it's written badly. Don't get me wrong, I love meta plots, but v3 did not do a good job of showing them justice. The writing gets annoying, and it's all just plot-dumped into a 4 HOUR LONG trial at the end.

My theory is that Junko broadcasted the first and second killing game to further despair. The first killing game could’ve been broadcast because of the cameras and the second one could’ve been broadcasted cause you should be able to record a digital product. Then I believe there are two possibilities.
Some random studio thought it was a good idea and continued the killing game for money or it’s a government project to spread hope (because as Nagito said hope shines stronger after beating despair).
Just finished the game and the first theory is the first thing that struck my mind, as I think it makes the most sense. On a meta level I get what the creators tried to say here, but the in-game lore makes most sense if the two first killing games actually happened.
This ending was by far the best in the series and had the most impact of all the games. It's still sticks to me and I played this game on release. I was very happy Kodaka left Danganronpa to pursue other things. His talent is too vast to be pigeon-held to just this one series. With the main character rejecting both hope and despair realistically where CAN the series go? The two fundamental philosophies of the game have been set aside and without that to prop it up and has nothing more to offer us. I'm so excited to see his next project and enjoy something new.

Ik im late, but i just realised something, the only character tsumugi doesnt cosplay as is mukuro ikusaba, this could mean that she IS real, this is enhanced by the fact that in the character summary of Danganronpa IF it says that she loves mystery novels usually to the point of getting conpletely absort in them. I’m sorry but that ending is confusing as heck.
And it definitely doesn't take place in our world because you'd know there'd be like 2% of the audience who either weren't moved by the no vote speech or were confused and thought that voting Hope was voting for the no vote speech because it's hopeful in some way. And probably a few who vote Despair in every season just on principle.

No me to...like I understand this last series was to prove that we are sick cause we enjoy watching murdering games and that we should stop but I honestly never watched it because of the murdering. I watched it because of the characters. I found them really interesting, and I honestly want a series were none of the killing happened and where they continue there school life as normal ultimate students. I really want one of them as just ultimate students attending Hope's peak academy and where they have normal lifestyle with no tradgedys. And they end up growing up and they all hold there own company's or advance the future with there knowledge cause yknow...there ultimates so with there knowledge they can bring new knowledge/technology to the future. I personally would love them to make an anime like this.

In my heart I will always love the Orginial and Danganropa 2. But if I’m being honest, I don’t like the ending and I would have been happier if we didn’t get Thai trippy ending. I honestly would find it more interesting if this was a spaceship taken over. So this killer hacks the space ship and try’s to kill everybody. It would also be interesting if hopes peak was a real place. And the space ship was organized by hopes peak but then sabotaged thus starting another killing game.

Ayy, I've been waiting for it. Thanks for the recaps of the series, always wanted to play em but could never find the time.
I tend to view Tsumugi's crazy meta plan as a lie, because her cospox presents a pretty large inconsistency. If she really gets a rash from putting on a disguise, it makes no sense for her to get one from cosplaying Kaede, a character she claims later is fictional. Thus, cospox in retrospect seems more like a flimsy alibi that Tsumugi used to try to avoid suspicion as Rantaro's true killer, which butterflies out far enough into making V3's meta narrative a lie (which is consistent with the truth vs lies theme of the game). Beyond this is speculation, but in my opinion this plan is honestly crazy enough for a Danganronpa game to be a scheme to spread despair that the remnants absolutely could have thought up themselves. As the ending leaves A LOT up to interpretation, I have my own opinions and theories on what was real, what was fake, what's outside the dome, which memories are true and which are lies, whether the audition videos were faked, how this killing game started in the first place, and all that. Heck, the prologue flashbacks even contradict what actually happened in the prologue! I still am not a huge fan of how they decided to end the game (and potentially the entire series, though Kodaka has stated he's not opposed to making another one), but it is interesting how open they decided to make it to interpretation and theory crafting.

My personal take is that the first few games/anime probably did happen but future foundation helped to get the world back to normal with Hope's Peak being gone for good. However, because of the past events people still craved hope vs despair which is what caused Danganronpa to continue on until v3

@@MadOrange644 The simulation ending didn't ruin it for me because the game led me to the conclusion that those who died would really die so the stakes are always high. But, the anime takes away those stakes by reviving everybody from the dead.
As mind fucky as the ending is, I loved that to win you have to resfuse to engage with all the mini-games, even as Monokuma makes them ridiculously easy.
That last trial still gives me a headache and I’ve rewatched this 4 times

I am still sort of new to franchise, and I have to admit that this game is still my favourite one after letting all three games simmer in my mind for a few months. I really love the ending message, and as a fan of meta endings/storytelling, it wasn't that hard for me to pick up on the fact that the audience they were talking about wasn't US, though still throwing some shades to obsessive fandom culture which is something even more dominant in Japan. I love the critism to game industry, to mass produced copy paste constant streams of sequels after a unique franchise is sold to some AAA company, I love how much game still retains its self critical humour it always had, and I love entire trial 6 so much for all the smaller things you miss through your first playthrough.
Yes, hammering the "it is all fiction" thing took a bit too long for my liking, and yes, it could have done better but honestly, after reading that the reason that part takes so long is because all the old VAs wanted to return for voicing a line for the finale while they were expecting a few to do so, I can't get sincerely angry at that because I love how much love there is for this game, from creators of it to voice actors- if Ultimate Talent Development Plan doesn't show the love Kodaka and his team has for this franchise and characters in it, then I don't know what does.
Goodbye Danganronpa. I got into the franchise by the time V3 was out, but I don't regret doing so, for this will be a franchise I will keep close to my heart, especially this game and SDR2. To this day, V3-5 and DR1-5 are only trials I couldn't stomach watching the execution at the time and skipped the cutscenes of, and I am not the type to cry so easily or skip content so easily, so it is a testament to just how powerful those characters and the games were, to get me so wrecked and immersed in this world. (No, really. V3 made me cry in 4 different trials, which none of the other two could manage. I cried in DR1 at 4th trial, as Sakura's note was being read, and at SDR2 ending, but in V3, Trial 1,4,5,6 all got me cry, 6 especially so after I properly played previous games too.)
There are so many questions and mysteries left unsolved, and I find myself keep returning back here time and again, each time with a different perspective on what might have happened and what might be the truth, there is a food for thought and new details I realize each time I think about this game or replay. It is sort of frustrating to be unable to put a neat bow all over it and call it a case closed, like I can with DR1-DR3 Hope's Peak Arc, but that's part of the reason that this lie of a game will stay in my memory forever as something I treasure. (Isn't that same with Kokichi, now that I think about it? He left out shrouded in lies and truths and everything in between, with a final lie and with ambiguity over his motivations, that even this long after the game was published, people still argue over his intentions and personality. It is also why he is so beloved or scorned by most people, which goes fairly well when it comes to comparing him to V3 he embodies, because V3 is often the best or worst of the bunch in most people's eyes from what I've seen.)
This is all jumbled, but tl:dr is that I really hope that this game gets recognized for the gem it truly is, in the future, after people cool down from their distate for some of the twists and the delivery of things, for I sincerely believe that this game was worthy of the time I spent on it and will be something I keep close to my heart years to come, a game I will find myself circle back to again and again and again.

can someone explain the ending to me? because originally i thought it just retconned the whole entire series and basically made everything that happened in the past 2 games just "fake" but when i read the comments apparently the ending has been misinterpretted? my other interpretation of this ending was that the first 2 games happened and then society was fixed or whatever and then they started doing the tv show thing, which i find really stupid because everything is "so peacful" they start just tourturing and killing people again like they did when the despair was happening?
Hey! So this is what I gathered myself and with the help of others and videos such as these.
What I believe what happened was that in a world like ours took place really peacefully. Although in that fictional world, they also had Danganronpa and loved every part of it. Kinda like how we, the third party audience. Played, watched and wanted more of Danganronpa. The first, second and other games were all fictional for them. We, the third party weren't a part of that world but we do the same as it does. Want more. Desires, despair and hope all are a part of us. However, the third game just calls us out basically while they finish up the game.
So basically, in the fictional (the peaceful one) world, Danganronpa is a series that watched it but had taken real people into the killing game. Fans from that world would audition to be a part of it (Kinda like how we make OCs) and they were taken into that world. The Danganronpa fictional world. Many killing games happened before V3. Then the games go and say that fiction can change the world. And as the third part audience, we are doing the same thing as the peaceful world. So, the first few games were fiction in another fictional world we watched and played but had no part in. In the end, they still had feelings that were very real and ended up leaving even when they knew what happened.
Personally, I love the ending. It really did change how I viewed things. I believe that fiction can change the world. Sorry if this doesn't make sense or is wrong. If it's wrong, I would love to know what it actually is or what others think it is. It's how I see it at least. I hope you have a great day stranger!

Not much can be confirmed as certain or true and it is mostly conjecture.
Things we can actually say for certain:
-In V3 there's an audience watching the participants kill each other a la Battle Royale. Keebo's and Tsugumi's statements and actions verify it. Kokichi's logic regarding the religious adherence to the game's rules and their very existence also applies.
-Everyone actually dies. Monokuma states this every time regardless of how closer to the truth you are. The survivors also witness the culprits die right before their eyes.
Things we can't actually take as truth:
-All danganronpa is just fake: This statement comes from Tsugumi and Monokuma, which aren't reliable sources. They could be lying about anything at any point in their speeches and there's no way for us nor Shuichi to know. Any of these could be real:
- - - * The previous entries in the series could have been actual events in Danganronpa universe and V3 is meant to take place in the far future where the idea of a killing game high school is exploited as a TV Show for entertainment.
- - - * V3 happens in a separate "timeline"/"Universe" where the previous entries are fiction and Tsugumi's Danganronpa series is based on it.
- - - * The previous entries in the series are actually part of Tsugumi's Danganronpa TV Series, but just like in V3, while the backstory isn't real, the characters are and killed each other for real.
To add to this:
V3's theme seems to be about Lies and Truth:
- You can commit Perjury in this game, i.e, lie during a trial to advance to the Truth.
- We're lead to believe the protagonist is one person when they aren't.
- Said supposed Protagonist Lies to Later Protagonist in order to find the Truth.
- The first trial and its outcome are lies.
- Kokichi's entire shtick is being a person that both lies and exposes lies.
