    In this enthralling debate, Professor Tariq Ramadan and Maryam Namazie go head-to-head on the topic of Islam in Europe today.
    Listed in a 2008 report called Victims of Intimidation: Freedom of Speech within Europe's Muslim Communities, Namazie has had multiple lectures no-platformed and disrupted. She is spokesperson for the Council of ex-Muslims and for Iranian Solidarity. Her writing specialises in challenging cultural relatavism and political Islam.
    Professor of contemporary Islamic Studies in Oxford, Tariq Ramadan has held positions in Universities across the world, he is also persona non grata in at least six countries including Saudi Arabia and Egypt for his challenges to undemocratic regimes.
    Namazie and Ramadan will be debating some of the biggest challenges facing Islam today.
    ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
    The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

      it is true that muslims in the West face discrimination, but of the positive variety. They are given preferential treatment over other communities by the governments in many ways. Their Koran also tells muslims that non-muslims are less than they, and should be discriminated against accordingly. So you are quite correct to point this out.

    When did a religion become a race?
    Is there such a thing as Christianophobia or Hinduphobia or buddhiphobia?

    • @ryan4305
      @ryan4305 8 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      +mackjeez The suffix -phobia has nothing to do with races, so the term "Islamophobia" can be used.

      @mackjeez 8 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      @ryan4305
      I completely agree but you missed the point of my argument.
      The issue is that the term (islamaphobia) is more often than not associated with race.
      Even in 2011 the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) began defining islamaphobia as a form of racism.
      Every Muslim association and even the Arab League state that"Islam is not a race", but Islamophobia is racism.
      Which doesn't make any freaking sense.
      It's like saying "Christianity is not a race", but Christophobia is racism.

    • @mackjeez
      @mackjeez 8 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      ryan4305
      Well, the issue is that it's a pretty big word to be misused, especially in modern western society. Imagine Christians using Christophobia the same way Islam is using Islamophobia.
      A journalist, celebrity, actor...etc.. can literately bash Christians and Christianity to their heart's content without repercussions. By acknowledging that any criticizing of Islam is considered Islamophobic (racist), you are creating a scenario where in western society, you cannot under any circumstance criticize the religion or it's actions.
      It's bad enough people died by drawing a cartoon of their prophet, but soon we won't even be able to state the obvious problems of Islam without being called a bigot, racist or even worse, be persecuted for our opinions.
      This "misused word" shouldn't even exist let alone be associated with something like racism.

      @Catherine Stonestreet Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman and some other Muslim countries forbid alcohol consumption and punish violators by whipping.
      Except if you're Christian. In that case they allow it, although perhaps not in public. That seems very lenient to me when I think about laws regarding alcohol and drugs in the west.

    • @lunchwagondavis9983
      @lunchwagondavis9983 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @Catherine Stonestreet
      Your argument against the statement "you have no right to say something that kills me inside" is to tell that person to go back where they came from or to assimilate if they want to stay whatever you live. But is that really the right response? There's nothing in the statement that identifies the person as a foreigner and the statement itself doesn't strike me as really controversial. There are many examples of things we forbid each other to say, certainly in public, because it hurts people, because "it kills them inside". I should say because it kills *us* inside, though. We now say "the N word" when that word was once commonplace. And there are some things you can say that US courts have deemed "fighting words" and saying them akin to a physical assault. Who wants the right to say something so hurtful it kills someone else inside anyway? Or what could anyone have to say that is so important it requires being permitted to be so hurtful to someone else. Maybe there is something but I can't think of what it might be.
      I hope you reconsider the question. I think it's what you would want that other person to do regarding you and your feelings.

      Now, back to your request: how am I supposed to blow you, you being a woman? I'll be honest, it's a weird request, but, no judgements here! Whatever gets you off. You want me to wear a burka? Let's both wear burkas!

Most of the so called western world is still backward in so many ways as compared to what Islam bestowed women 1400 years ago! Women were leaders! Oldest running university in the world was established by a Muslim woman! Shame on you! Do you think Benazir Bhutto and successive Prime ministers of Bangladesh do not have freedom to do anything? What a nonsensical biased individual you are!
      FYI, Iran has more women representatives in its government than the so called leader of the world USA!
      You think they were all silent, had no freedom of speech and expression and yet they got elected?
      India kills females in infancy! Islam was the first religion to abolish such a barbaric practice! And Indian Hindutwa governance allows it as I speak!

    There is an undeniable responsibility, that each and every world leaders is endowed with when in power, regardless of ideology, of personal belief, or the religious tradition with which they are, and have been immersed. Being reminded of the fragility of human nature when given power, seems to be a primary aspect that is constantly denied in our modernist assumptions, as we assume that human reason would not permit us to stoop to controlling citizens without it. Sadly there is, as this debate clearly illustrates, that words and definitions of words/concepts are vital in our communications between each other. Education is of course a necessary adjunct to this as was also noted, but this too needs qualifying as education is so closely tied to politics, to culture, and ideology and how we as an individual attempts to interpret according to our own personal truth concept. How is it possible for one person to have all the truth, if humanity is in fact a thing? Each person it seems submits a miniscule something to humanity and regardless of how big or small, grand or modest, is of gigantic importance. When that importance is sidelined by someone else (either in power or not) any human being reacts, regardless of belief system.

      The declarations made on 9 August 2002 by Sheikh Omar Bakri founder of the Islamic Religious Court in London and head of the Islamic al-Muhajiroun organization: "We will transform the West into Dar Al-Islam [that is, a region under Islamic rule] through outside invasions. If an Islamic State arises and invades [the West] we will be its army and its soldiers from within. If not, we will invade the West through ideological invasions from within, without war and killings. Either they receive our preaching [of Islam], or we will live among them and they will be influenced by us and will accept Islam as a political solution to their problems, and not as an ideological solution. ... They [the West] have imposed human laws on us, and the [future] Islamic regime will impose Islamic religious laws on them. Muslims will act of their own accord, and all those who are not Muslims will be obliged to do so through the [Islamic] law ".
      Many Muslim leaders and believers deny or minimize violence.
      "Kill the unbelievers [ie, anyone who is not Muslim] wherever you meet them. This is the reward of the unbelievers " - (Sura 2: 191)
      - "War is prescribed, even if you don't like it" - (Sura 2: 216) -
      (From New Testament)
      Ephesians 5:11, NIV: "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them."

      @@charleskittelp.1125 Quran 4:34. Only applies to women who abuse their rights and by extension their husbands. Explicitly stated you can't cause harm, can't hit the face can't leave a mark. Its not beating then is it? And secondly quote who dam verse.
      Quran 4:74
      "So when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure their bonds, and either [confer] favor afterwards or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens. That [is the command]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them [Himself], but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of Allah - never will He waste their deeds."
      Its a war verse. Really don't see the problem here.
      Quran 5:33. Again its a war verse. What do you expect them to do, hand them roses?
      2. There are multiple verses in the Quran whereby slaves are freed to forgive sins, slaves are allowed to buy their freedom etc. Not one verse condones slavery so yes it came to end slavery, without going through a bloody civil war.
      3. Lets say he did. And? Consider these things (or don't):

      She was fully aware and knows what she agreed to
      For over 1200 nobody made an issue about their marriage until 1905, what where you guys doing in that time? Sleeping? Its obvious it wasn't an issue and thus was not paedophilia at all for 1200 years unless your ready to condemn your ancestors of paedophilia as well?

      1.The verse (4:34) does not contain your explanations and it is unclear what you make these explanations.
      What kind of god wants believers and non-believers to fight for himself or for his command? Frankly, I would expect a god not to care for him or her to be believed.
      You send orders to a society and society does not want to give up their beliefs, then you bring these people across and send war orders! If there is such a thing happen today, what is said to the man who says these orders? What is the place of war (beheading, cut the 5:22 hands and feet on alternate sides cut off...) based on belief in orders that send messages to humanity? Will we act with these rules accordingly in 2100?
      2. Many options are offered instead of releasing! As I said, it directly prohibits pork but contradictively, an order from God does not prohibit slavery.

      Letter to the Reverend Ensor Walters (1933), as quoted in Bernard Shaw : Collected Letters, 1926-1950 (1988) by Dan H. Laurence, p. 305
      ” I have always held the religion of Mohammed in high estimation because of its wonderful vitality.
      It is the only religion which appears to me to possess that assimilating capability to the changing phase of existence which can make itself appeal to every age.
      The world must doubtless attach high value to the predictions of great men like me.
      I have prophesied about the faith of Mohammed that it would be acceptable to the Europe of tomorrow as it is beginning to be acceptable to the Europe of today.
      The medieval ecclesiastics, either through ignorance or bigotry, painted Mohammedanism in the darkest colors.
      They were in fact trained both to hate the man Mohammed and his religion.
      To them Mohammed was Anti-Christ. I have studied him - the wonderful man, and in my opinion far from being an Anti-Christ he must be called the Savior of Humanity.
      I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it the much-needed peace and happiness.
      But to proceed, it was in the 19th century that honest thinkers like Carlyle, Goethe and Gibbon perceived intrinsic worth in the religion of Mohammed, and thus there were some change for the better in the European attitude towards Islam.
      But the Europe of the present century is far advanced.
      It is beginning to be enamored of the creed of Mohammed.
      I believe that if today an autocrat of Mohammed’s caliber assumes world leadership, he could solve all problems of humanity splendidly.
      The world will become an abode of peace and happiness.
      I predict that tomorrow’s Europe will embrace Islam.”

      @@Musta8787 Like all religions they start with one man and what he thinks and or believes. He then convinces others to believe in what he believes and or made up, then it grows. So where is the reality in this system of belief and convincing others in a belief ? Religion was a way to explain our existence and that has become obvious for a long time to those of us that can think independently. As many cultures have created their own religion that helps them understand their existence this is evidenced by examining each religion and how it correlates to the culture that developed it. Mohammad created his to suit him and his wants. In reality like all religions they are not backed with tangible facts. Only belief what someone else said, this is not factual its made up stories full of fantasy. Islam was started by a mentally deranged violent murderer that was smart enough to start his own religion that benefited him. Now Islam runs 50 countries and its goal is to own the earth. What ever or who ever gets in its way will be destroyed and you think that is OK ? that only makes you as sick as Mohammad. The sickness that is Islam will be fully revealed to the world soon and it will be crushed never to rise again. This will happen or Islam will rule the world, but first you will have to kill billions of well armed people, good luck. The real sick thing is you will try.

      @@brianjones8006 I think you never even studied about the religion of Islam, all you have is a subjective emotional view about God in general. Islam came from the first human being, named Adam. Muslim literally means submission to God. Muhammad PBUH came to correct all the previous misunderstanding and misinterpretation of others trying to dictate the word of God according to their own political agenda before him ie Jesus Moses Abraham. Let's say for your sake Quran is false, Muhammad PBUH was deranged and God is just imaginary. What is your foundation of morality? What is your foundation of reason? If all those are just a part and partial of survival of the fittest then we all have no meaning in life and life after death is only wishful thinking, meaning we just live to survive? Kill to survive? Rob to survive? What is your morality stance on life? What do you base your logic? Books of speculations like Darwinism? Do you really think we all evolved from a lesser being? Do you deep down actually believe that? We all have this innate ability to think there is a creator or designer for everything on earth, phones, cars, machines, so when it comes to nature you spin it around according to your dismissal of the same line of reasoning? You question God? The creator of everything? We all don't live selfishly according to our whims and pleasures. We live to help others as well, that's why we all pay for the hospitals, emergency agencies and less fortunate. We are not the final product of evolution or even this earth isn't the final destination. There's a whole lot we need to discover but we yet only know 00.001% of the universe. Even one of our cells in our bodies have many information than you and I could ever think of. Then why do you dismiss the design? Why do you reject God for your own illogical view of life?
