2021 BMW S1000R Tested! | Have BMW Done Enough??

  • The BMW S1000R has been completely redesigned for 2021 and is based on the current S1000RR Sports Bike. Unlike the S1000RR however BMW have decided not to chase the 200 HP club and have instead concentrated on weight loss and handling. But have they done enough??

Thanks for the review chops, I always enjoy your videos matey. I was really looking forward to the release of the new single R. I think the bike looks great except for that front end and light, which is as dull as dishwater. Personally I think BMW have missed an opportunity to make this bike look amazing if only they hadn't opted for the cheap option of taking what looks to be the light from the R1200R.

Its amazing that these bikes and the RR's don't come with radiator guards as standard. The radiators have quite a huge surface area and are very delicate not to mention agricultural looking. When I fitted my black R&G radiator guards to my RR it improved the look of the front of the bike quite a bit.

Thanks for the review. I recently started following your channel and quite enjoy it. I’m getting back into riding after a long period away from it, so I’m watching reviews to decide which bike to buy. I think it would be very helpful to discuss cost of maintenance in your reviews, as well as warranties as you did in this video. I’ve been turned off by some bikes when I discovered how much shorter the service intervals were and the relative cost of those services. Every bike should have radiator guards, it’s such a cheap part to provide much needed protection. I’d rather see frame sliders and radiator guards than a lot of the unnecessary electronics on bikes. Thanks again, I enjoyed the video.

Nailed that comment about the old bike! I loved mine but it was too sanitised and lacked soul and character as a result of being "too good?" . Actually quite like that hockenheim silver, think change the wheel colour to match the engine casings and subframe, would look awesome. Great vid as always, shame about the track footage though. Nothing worse when you've been talking to yourself for ages and realise the camera crapped out ages ago! 😂😭👍 - Def looks better than the new Gsxs1000 anyway but is it £3k+ better?... Hmm.

Chops, I know it's a review and you have to say it, but 'weight loss' in a can and wheels really mean nothing on a road bike, if you have an H2 you get used to it, S1000R, you get used to it, a road bike is a platform to not think about the bike, but the experience and journey it takes you on. I have the old S1000R, and yes, I'm dribbling at the new one after your review, the new engine, the big led screen, the key fob, and design upgrades is huge, makes my bike look old school:)

Great review chops. Not keen on that grey colour option though. The bars look a little too low for my liking [kind of defeats the purpose of a naked]. You will have to re-test the V4 Streetfighter [my favourite] since now it is Euro 5 compliant but more importantly they have re-tuned the motor and max torque is now 2000 rpm lower in the rev range [at 9500 rpm now], so it should make a big difference. Looking forward to the new Tuono review [hopefully]. Those that have tested it say it is simply the best of all the supernakeds. Take care mate and ride safe.

    I went to compare the S1000R and the streetfighter this weekend. I have 15 S1000R, and i'm not buying the new one because;
    - I don't like the quality of it, it doesn't look that premium even compared to my old bike.
-There's only 2 modes for the suspension, the old one has 3.
-I find the opposite of what's been told here; the old one makes a load more noise and feels a lot more raw and I like that.
-It's not worth paying 10 grand extra for only a minor "upgrade".
-On the new RR the engine rattles more then on my old single R, which is odd.
-Don't like the design of the front end much, the rear is nice but so was the old one.
That being said, i've not ridden it because it was pissing down with rain.

Not panicked about the lack of a shift cam but their argument against it is hollow, insofar as not needing the power. If that's that case, why put it in the GS. From a weight saving perspective however, I can see where they're coming from.
All that aside, it's a pretty awesome machine. Electronics are the way forward now as that tech I making its way from the race circuit. TBF, I think mine have saved me from some silly errors. They were there but not super intrusive.

Does highlight a glaring problem on modern machine's with massive radiators, that manufacturer's really ought to be putting on a basic rad protector and not sell one as an extra. If that happened to my bike I would be fuming!

LC: "It's a little bit ........ buzzy". I loved the look of the old bike but it was indeed bad for the buzz through the foot pegs and handlebars. Because of this I didn't buy one. I have an in-line 4 cylinder bike. It's silky smooth. BMW needs to sort out the buzz problem. If they did it would be a fantastic bike, with a shift cam engine.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly. There were major complaints about the vibration in the S1000XR model YEARS ago. All they did was put more rubber on the bar mounts.
For example, the Z900 or GSX-S1000 engines are butter.

    • @alexmorgan3435

As nice as it is, it's around the price of the ST 1200RS.....the engine and sound are wonderful on that, I think my money would go to Triumph - what do yo reckon Mr Chops ? or is that another video ?!

I actually have the RS coming for a week beginning of June, so without riding it I cannot say. But the plan for 2021 will be back to back tests of the new naked bikes so more to come 😎

On the launch did they adjust the pre load for different riders or did they leave it standard

The weight, the power and torque figures shocked me a little tbh! considering my 21 y/o ZX9r is around 200kg stock, has 140bhp and 110Nm of torque. The gen 1 ZX-10r's had about 180bhp 115Nm torque and weighs around 185-190kg wet. Save your money lol

Never understand why manufacturers don't fit radiator guards as standard?? Nice review but I'm still not convinced, had my MT10 nearly 5 years now.

Same. I've only had mine for 2yrs/32000kms (mt09 before) but still don't see a reason to change it. I love everything about it and I am eagerly anticipating its new version. Let's hope for the next year.

Amen - it wouldn’t cost much and virtually everyone would prefer them to be standard.

First thing I do with every new bike is buy a rad cover. Btw the MT10 is a stonking bike, I had mine for 3 years and enjoyed every minute. Changed it to a new gen3 Superduke this year.

Hey Chopsy, I wanna ask for a personal opinion. I have a Striple 765 RS 2020, which for me is plenty fast for only road + mountain riding (and doing silly speeds and stop light wheelies), do you reckon a bike like this S1KR is worth upgrading to? It seems way to much for the road, yes fancy electronics and torque but I dunno the RS already seems a bit excessive. Thanks!

I have an S1000XR with this engine (Gen1 actually but more or less the same thing tbh) and it's bloody nuts.
    Too nuts really.
It'll tootle around, of course it will, but it truly comes alive above 5-6k and that's licence losing territory if you keep on doing it.
I'm thinking of swapping for a GS or RS.

    The problem here is...
The local BMW dealer is also a Triumph dealer...
And when I walked in and saw the Beemer I was like "Ooh a new S1000R" then I tok one glance at a black new Speed Triple 1200RS and newer looked at the Beemer again. 🤣
