    I think either soldering or crimping is fine, as long as you do it properly. Use adhesive-lined shrink tubing when soldering or use marine-grade heat-shrink w/adhesive crimp butt connectors with a proper crimping tool. Excessive use of heat-shrink, wire loom, and tesa tape for bonus points! :D

    I think the footwells where the rear seats came out would be a great place for at least 120 litres of drinking water tanks. Nice and low between the axles. You mention batteries going in there but the lithium batteries are quite light and could go on the floor of the camper. Then again, you may be mounting a water tank under the vehicle like your Africa and Australian jeeps.

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One side is planned to be water tank, the other side battery.
      I'll see how it works out in reality!

    20 year master tec here. Dan- you are doing professional workmanship with that wiring. I can’t find any criticisms! Good call grounding the new frame. You never know. Glad to see you went with the syclone pre filter. I just got back from a 6k mile trip with it out to Colorado and Moab with zero issues from the ecodiesel and syclone pre filter.

    Another great video, I like the amount of detail that you've done on this series, I feel I've gone too deep into my build at times, the pacing and information is great but not too into the weeds either. I really like the composite material decision, I need to keep that in mind for future updates and upgrades on my setup.

  • @HammerRocks

    Another great progress made. Some weight savings there by not using any screws or bolts to fit the camper together.

    Nice! You will learn to appreciate the diesel engine with the fuel economy and torque it provides. we have 35000 km on mine with a lot of heavy trailer towing (from Canada to southern Arizona and back). The camper is looking good. As for whether soldering or crimping is the best way to go, I say, simply follow and do whatever gives you the most reassurance. The internet is full of people, like myself, who have no real knowledge of our own and tend to follow whatever advice our chosen favourite internet star and expert say. Nothing more or less than that.

    I wish you the best of luck. I just spent a week at all 4 fun in Colorado, and saw JL’s and gladiators, having so many electrical problems affecting them from going into four-wheel-drive the JK is a much more reliable platform

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a surprise - the shifter into 4wd on the JL is the same as on the JK - it's a big mechanical linkage that goes "clunk". It has nothing to do with the computer.

    • @coloradomallcrawlers
      @coloradomallcrawlers ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I owned 2 JKs and now a JL. Have had no electrical problems with the JL and I’ve dunked mine in more water than most. This just doesn’t make a lot of sense as the JK and JL aren’t really that different. My guess is any electrical issues at All4Fun was due to extra accessories and the wiring people did.

    Hi Dan. Be VERY thankful you got your diesel Gladiator when you did. It's looking very much like Jeep won't be making them any more supposedly because they can't get them to conform to updated 2024 EPA emissions requirements. I've even heard that dealers that may still have any 2023s in stock aren't allowed to sell them. 😯

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine is a Wrangler, and you're right, they have ended the diesel in the Wrangler and the Gladiator.
      The stop sell on the 2023s right now is because of the recall, which a birdy told me will be getting released on the 18th of this month.

    There are butt connectors that have solder integrated into a heat shrinkable tube. Strip about a 1/4” from the two ends you want to connect and push the ends into the middle then heat the connector until the solder within the tube becomes melted. Heat the rest of the connector until it seals around the wire. You can get them for various wire gauges. It makes wiring much easier.

    I dont know your particular glue but:
    I know Sika 221, 252 and 292 and Ottokol as well. For both glues there is a MINIMUM thickness one needs to keep. afaik that is 1mm for 252.
    So one must not PRESS stuff onto the glue. One should place something 1mm thick every 4" or so into the glue to keep it constant.
    Besides that: You have not planned the sandwich to have constructural strength? Looks like you just glued them on top os the frame. This is completely different to all German / EU approaches on that. But maybe your sandwich plates are not good enough for that.
    Here is it absolzely no problem to get sandwich plates up tp 10m or so. From 2 - 6 or 8cm and also with different honeycombs. = wobbyly or that strong that you can stand on the roof build from 1 piece.
    Very interesting project.

    Can you provide a name, part number, or link to the insulation/dynamat material you installed?

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  ปีที่แล้ว

      That was just some left over stick on stuff Michael had lying around from a previous project. I think Dynamat is considered to be the best of the best, and I'll be getting some for a future use coming soon

      The decision to put them into production will be based on how the first two prototypes perform for us around the world.

    I'm curious about the roof, is it going to be flat from the point where the walls end or a pop-up style, or what? Hope you're installing air-conditioning with where you're planning on going. 🙂

      @TheRoadChoseMe  ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, we have not locked that in yet. We've come up with a list of pros and cons each way, and I keep changing my mind back and forward.
      What kind of popup would you do?

      The plan is to test and evaluate how well these perform around the world before making a decision on what comes next

    Those little stick on pads are disappointing.

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, I don't love them either. Have you found something better?
      Once I run interior wiring for lights and power I will put all this into a loom, and likely find a better solution than those pads.

    Doesn’t look very aerodynamic, thought you would have some shape on the front end of the cabin

      We decided the goal was to hurry up and get these prototypes on the road so we can evaluate how well they function. If they ever go into production we could refine small details like that.

    • @polkinnen1501
      @polkinnen1501 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. Just maybe try to integrate the cabin more with the vehicle so that it no longer looks like 2 separate elements. I think it would certainly still be possible to improve the aeordynamics and thus the fuel consumption. to better understand what I mean by that, there are good examples from ".toms-fahrzeugtechnik" how they build their partially intrigued campers. in the basis yours is nothing else only with a jeep. :) th-cam.com/video/K1V1RbRu79E/w-d-xo.html

    • @TheRoadChoseMe
      @TheRoadChoseMe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotcha, thanks!
      The roof rack will help a lot when it's done.
      To be honest there are a million little details we could have designed or built differently, and each one would have cost more money and taken more time in design and build.
      These first two vehicles are prototypes, and we want to get them on the road to see how they perform. We would rather spend our time on the road on adventure, not spending more months in the shop trying to make it absolutely perfect in every way.
      If we ever put them into production we could tweak small things like that.
