    This was my favorite Metroid game and one of my favorite SNES games of all time. It had platforming like a Mario game. It had dungeon/equipment/ability unlocks like a Zelda game. It had battle mechanics like a Mega Man game. It had a dark and ominous vibe like a Castlevania game. It had badass music/sound like a Final Fantasy game. And it had the nostalgia of the original Metroid. It was like all of my favorite games combined into one. What more could a 9 year old ask for?

      @22_floW 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I have to agree with you, J W, because this game at it's time really was Metroid in it's prime and in many ways, still is. I say the same thing about Link to the Past, Super Contra, even Super Mario World and many more games where the Super Nintendo and it's time are concerned. It really was a unique time to be alive in and sadly, I don't think we'll ever have that experience again. In my opinion, Super Metroid completely perfected the isolation and "the unexplained" or "mysteriousness feeling" you're supposed to experience with the Metroid games.

    Fun fact: nobody at Nintendo wanted to touch the Metroid series after Super Metroid, because it was so pixel perfect that any sequel would have been viewed as a major let-down. It took another company to make Metroid Prime before another Metroid game was made.

      What about Zero Mission and the literal Metroid 4 AKA Metroid Fusion?

    • @JackedBlack
      @JackedBlack 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would like to point out both those replying to you and yourself are both partially correct. No game was released between Prime and Super Metroid, however, Fusion was released alongside Prime, and they had both been in development simultaneously. Additionally, Metroid Zero Mission had started development I believe before the release of either game, however it wasn't so much code as it was figuring out how to do the remake.
      However what's most important is that Nintendo tried to make Metroid Prime and was looking around for studios to take a shot at it, both internally and externally, and it was at this point that a large amount interest from our hometown heroes in Austin, Texas: Retro Studios, came out of the woodworks with a large portion of their developers being major Metroid Fans, who created a demo and showed it off to Nintendo.
      They were so impressed, they moved the (barely started) development that had occurred internally, and given it to Retro.
      So, Nintendo was not afraid of making a sequel, they had their internal developers working on it, both for Prime as well as Fusion. However, Retro won the bid.
      I'm sure they were hesitant at first, but after 5 years they basically went forth and tried their best, and it went well in hindsight. For the longest time, Prime was considered the 3rd best video game of all time on Meta Critic and many other sites, and Fusion was no pushover. ;)

      @@brainypepper1621well Zero Mission hit in 2004 and Fusion hit the same day as Prime(in the US at least) in November 2002 so technically what he said was right and it's most definitely a plausible explanation for why it took 8 years to get another Metroid game and damn was Fusion and Prime worth the wait making 2002 probably still Metroid's strongest year so far(and I'm writing this in mid October 2024) damn now I'm back to obsessing over getting another 2D Metroid...if we ever do I hope it's long cuz pretty much my only real issue with Fusion is the length

Harder still to believe that I still fire up an emulator & do it all over again every couple of years because the game is _still_ that good, but the soundtrack is a part of that. This level of storytelling with very very minimal words was unheard of for video games in 1994. I remember being blown away at the entire game, with the climax being the Mother Brain fight and escape. Nowadays, it seems like an awesome 2D video game, but don’t get it twisted: it made a massive impact. This is and remains one of the greatest games of all time.

    A classic. Truly, a real classic, is what Super Metroid is.
    I was a kid when i first saw this game back in '98. I could only watch as my older siblings played and they never let me play it but i was so enchanted by it. Sadly, the SNES was sold before i even touched it. I mostly played in the N64 onwards. All those years in between i never forgot what the game was like. How Samus ran, the music, the environment, and yes, the Screw Attack. After that, I played all the games that came out. I played Prime 1 -3, Fusion, Zero Mission, Other M, Hunters, Pinball too! I also withheld myself from ever searching up gameplay of Super. It was really difficult but it didn't help out i was a dummy and didn't have internet access reliably till 2011.
    Fiinally, for the first time i played the game i longed for when it digitally released in the Wii. Holy shit, I felt like i finally got back a missing piece of my memories and childhood. Everything was as mysterious and beautiful as i had seen it. Honestly one of my happiest moments in videogames.

    Super Metroid is one of the greatest games of all time in a series that has not been treated very kindly by it's own creators. Many series have gone through the same. Super Metroid is one of the few 2D games that really makes you feel emotion. From just the title screen, you already feel the tone of this game. This is not your run of the mill SNES game, no. This is not your average Super Mario game, or your Zelda. This is Metroid! Back then, very few would go to the lengths that Nintendo went through to make this masterpiece of game design, sound, and gameplay all combined. The game is very alien (pun entirely intended) to the norm of the 1990's SNES games, and I think it stands out much more than other games of the era. The title screen starts with ominous music, over text appearing as if it were typed in a computer. The screen moves about on the unit containing the last Metroid. There seem to be (presumably unconscious) bodies on the ground, and the screen then shows the Super Metroid logo. I saw this a long time ago, and I was hooked. Play this game more people, and maybe the series can get more love from the creators.

    I first heard about Super Metroid after watching a fan made video of an anti piracy screen. They used "Wrecked Ship" as the theme in the background and once I heard it, it was instantly creepy and I wanted to know what it was from. I searched up the game. I learned it was one if the greatest games of all time, so I bought a cartridge of it. As soon as the theme of Samus Aran came on, I knew I was about to embrace on an epic journey...
    Fast forward to a few years later, I'm 19 years old and this is my favorite soundtrack and game of all time. Its insane how a game of this era is so breathtaking, jaw dropping and chilling all at the same time. I listen to the soundtrack at work almost every day. I remember the battle against Mother Brain, the way I was shocked when the Metroid restored Samus' health. That was incredible. At the end of the game, the end credits, I teared up a bit listening to the music. What a fucking incredible game. Thank you Nintendo

    Super Metroid is still one of the most immersive and atmospheric games and game soundtracks to have ever been crafted.
    Even the Silent Hill games aren't quite on the same level because you're spending so much time in those games of that series perpetually terrified and thus in an instinctive fight-or-flight mode that prevents you from really soaking in the full sense of being alone on an isolated alien world.
