I really like how you actually explain the musical ideas, not just making "Pharrell type beat". It's actually extremely important to show young beatmakers how you can use the same techniques for completely different results

Using percussion as a song starter is a Phil Collins classic trick !
He used to start with a CR78 drum machin as percussion to create a groove. To did it, he programed loops as a rythmic pattern. Then, based on his drum machin pattern, he composed, an acoustic drums groove to create an all rythm section, and added the melody and harmonic part at last.

When thinking of Pharrell, I’ve always considered him a minimalist. He seems to only use longer sustains on the bridge, or breaks. One perfect example, is “Drop It Like It’s Hot”. When I hear younger track makers throw every sound they in their DAW into one track, I refer them to that Pharrell/Snoop track

    • @R2DaEzMusic
      @R2DaEzMusic ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That bridge was Chad's idea

Thank you so much man, this is very insightful. I've been into making 2000's-ish hip hop lately. Typically in the style of the Neptunes. I was getting sick of starting of with a framework that limits room for creativity (for example: starting of with chords, a melody, overused trap hihat, overused trap snare, a bouncy snare and a spinz 808).
The things I've learned from listening to alot of beats produced by the Neptunes for the last 2 days:
    1. Use textured drums.
    2. Don't be afraid to use percussions in an unconventional way.
    3. Chords don't have to be extended throughout the whole song.
    4. Same goes for the melody.
    5. Sometimes you don't even need chords, but just weird textured sounds on the background to fill up the frequency spectrum.
    6. Same goes for the melody.
    7. Don't spend alot of time trying to make your instrument sound natural.
    8. STOP USING REEVERB ON EVERYTHING. It's what I do inuitively, but alot of melody instruments the Neptunes' use are dry as hell.
    9. IT'S OKAY TO LEAVE SPACES.
    10. Have fun with it. Experiment, try new things. Enjoy the fact that you don't have to stick to a protocol that leaves little room for innovation, so that your beats don't end up sounding as if they were mass produced in a Metro Boomin' factory.

It's hard for some to separate techniques from someone's art, and you kill it every time. keep up the great work!

As a producer and an engineer. What made Pharrell different was the sounds he and chad used to make the beats and the mix was different because the drums always sounded really compressed but had enough snap to it to be effective. Although this video is correct in some aspects… the sound choice and mixing was what made producers like Timbo and Pharrell head and shoulders bigger among other producers at the time. You have producers like Dilla and Primo totally sample driven and then you had Pharrell and Timbo etc who also sample but the usage of the samples were different and in some cases there were NO samples used at all.
