14:50 The bell in Tokyo Drift isn’t actually a cowbell! It’s really a sample of an Indonesian gong instrument called a “gamelan”. Not only that, but the Teriyaki Boyz took the sample from the legendary Korg Triton, as well.
This is 1 of the best dysections of the Neptunes production , you spot on man. YES , plz do a chord theory video. Wish i could lay down a idea musicly like you. I know some basic stuff but cant seem to elevate it. Salute from the Netherlands.
That Pharell clip at the end was deep af. I appreciate the man even more. And I absolutely appreciate content creators like you who show not just the creation of music, but the culture behind it too
Having grown up with the Neptunes and Pharell, this video hot the spot! Very detailed and smooth. Please do more of these videos and yes beginner producer videos please!
It's great to see you again, King Jay and this is just what I needed in continuing my crash course journey. Also, now I can't get that last Pharell clip out of my head. It was super deep!
Your channel is a breath of fresh air! Nice to see someone on YT who is NOT clicking in notes in FL studio and playing some synth hardware and pianos instead of VSTs. You play piano. FL users play the piano roll, lol. Nice breakdown of the Neptunes' production style also!
Excellent video! 🙏 Pharrell is a beast , in my opinion, he’s one of the greatest producers of our generation. I would definitely like to see a video or two of you breaking down some spicy chords that you use (like in this video) when making songs in an R&B style. I’m just trying to learn some music theory and piece everything together 😁
Everything in this video, from the chords you chose, to the bridge, to the sound selection, to the outcome of the songs, to the instruments you have in your studio are just 🤌🏽 chefs kiss and goals
MAN! This video was terrific. I'm so happy that you Mentioned Chad. But this was dope. You did the chords and used the sounds. Your beat was dope. Great job. Going to check out some more of your work. Definitely do a video about them chords and how they go through their bridges, specifically going into a bridge and coming out of a bridge. That would be super helpful.
You're my favorite music producer youtuber! No one does it like you, the way you immerse yourself in a musicians style or the style of an era is unmatched.
Thank you Jay, great video. I can imagine how much time and energy has been invested in a video like this - where you not only made great music, but putting all pieces together - one by one and then to explain so beautifully, finding all the example of songs and relevant video clips - it shows your passion and love for music. Thank you for this. Subscribed instantly.
As an intern at hovercraft Studios in Virginia Beach around the Kelis Clipse Era , you really did your homework bro. Thanks for making sure Chad was a part of the unit. 💯❤️😮
Great breakdown of their sounds. I met both of them but separately. Pharrell I saw at Battery Studios then spoke to outside Sam Ash in NYC around when Superthug came out. Then I met Chad at Manny's Music also in NYC. He just got on some keyboard and started flowing. You could see that he's beats all day. I told him that I loved what they did and had a lot of respect for them
I swear there are producers but then there's the Neptunes.. easily the most influential duo next to Michael Jackson to me. I absolutely love the Neptunes. Love what you did on this beat as well.
The chords on You Don’t Have to Call are technically 9th chords if you include the bass lines. And that last chord landing on F is technically a minor 13th. But yes, stacking major and minor chords this way is always fun! Also, thank you for giving Chad his flowers. Pharrell’s legacy would be nonexistent without Chad.
Dope ...Love the Neptunes/Pharrell 🖖🏽✌🏽.....That is definitely a Beat inspired by them!...Guess I gotta start labeling my beats, chorus,bridge!...Dope!...Common Sense Album... Pharrell did the whole Album!
Fell in love with The Neptunes production as kid in the 00’s and especially the bridges. From Ciara’s ‘I Proceed’ to Jay-Z’s ‘I Know’ to N.E.R.D’s ‘Spaz.’ Too many to name, but those are some of the reasons I’ve got into making beats. 💯🖖
Jay Diggs, you're my YT Guy! You's the bi'ness when it comes to your covers, and the incredibly meticulous way that you dissect classic tunes and reinvent them my brotha'! Additionally, your hilarious sense of humor, wit, cleverness and less we forget, your incredible musicality and talenr has made me a huge fan and a definite subscriber. Btw, I also play, and although I don't have any content pn the Tube yet, I hope to soon enough, and would love to collab' with you someday as well my brotha . Keep up the awesome content. One! ✌️ 😎
Great stuff!!! Good to see you back in action! Favorite Neptunes joint....No Turning Back by Kelis from her Kaleidoscope album. ALLLLL the beats on that album go super under the Pharrell/Neptunes radar. Check 'em out!
Dudeee, this is amazing detailed video. I have to say you forgot 1 secret that Pharrell and Chad had in their Neptunes beats. Since this was still the late 90s and 2000s, a lot of producers from this era was sampling a lot of 70s and 80s records. What made Pharrell and Chad standout is instead of them sampling, they interpolated a lot of their fav records from their childhood, then switch it around until it's something completely different. Chad talked about this in their Hip-hop Evolution doc on Netflix. I'm a huge Neptunes Stan myself, but overall, I have to say this was a great video
Bruuuhh this is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 and it’s dope that you gave Chad Hugo the credit he deserves because it’s really corny that he hardly gets a mention knowing he did ALOT of dope things to ALOT of our favorite Neptunes tracks 🙏🏾
Chad always got mentioned when it came to production. Pharrell gets attention because he is more of a front man than Chad and has done a lot of things outside if their group.
Great video so interesting. Grew up on this, am a music producer myself. Did not know the triton provided all those sounds. I did know that Chad had that other smaller semi analog Korg synth. Forgot the name. Small compact korg synth
Something you may find interesting is Eric Sermon gave Pharrell the mic pattern sequence that Erick sermon used on Def squad El Nino album song "Full cooperation thrn Pharrell used it on several songs just switching sounds. If you listen to "Full Cooperation" song def squad and compare with mystical "Shake ys ass" you can tell is same pattern sequence with different sounds assigned.
My favorite track hands down from the Neptunes production is Let's Take A Ride (Countryside) by JT and my favorite Pharrell Williams produced is Just That Type Of Girl by J Hud! It's the bass line on that track for me!
I have about 100 unfinished melodies where I'm stuck finishing them and all I seem to do is make 20 seconds sound better and better but never finishing the song. Am I the only one?
Once you get to a point of “there’s nothing more to add. Then it’s time to Structure the beat and make it a full composition. Definitely study How to Structure a beats. And you’ll have more beats done.
Great video! I've been producing since the early 2000s and the Neptunes were a huge inspiration for my production. You nailed their sound, but maybe less quantization would've been more accurate to the Neptunes/Pharrell sound. They never quantized. LOL Anyways, I haven't heard anyone on TH-cam as accurate as you. That says a lot! Peace.
(22:25) i get discouraged because I don’t know chords or major 7, dominant, NOTHING! Then I hear a track from Justice LEAGUE or The Runners, and they almost make me stop
Yes, Chad Hugo is underrated
That chord change 🔥
Thanks bro! 👊🏾
that piano 🔥
14:50 The bell in Tokyo Drift isn’t actually a cowbell! It’s really a sample of an Indonesian gong instrument called a “gamelan”. Not only that, but the Teriyaki Boyz took the sample from the legendary Korg Triton, as well.
Thanks for that! I didn’t know that was from the triton too
this is special to me... I remember when I heard "In Search of..." for the first time as a kid. I never stopped listening to The Neptunes since.
yeah this is the best style to me
Inject this video into my veins!! The Neptune era was undeniably the peak of feel-good hip-hop!! 🔥🔥
This is 1 of the best dysections of the Neptunes production , you spot on man. YES , plz do a chord theory video. Wish i could lay down a idea musicly like you. I know some basic stuff but cant seem to elevate it. Salute from the Netherlands.
Ive seen a bunch of these types of videos on YT and this is the only one I've seen that got it right. 🔥🔥🔥
That Pharell clip at the end was deep af. I appreciate the man even more. And I absolutely appreciate content creators like you who show not just the creation of music, but the culture behind it too
Glad you're back uploading! So much value in your videos!
The vibes in this video as a whole are amazing
The studio is looking beautiful!
Having grown up with the Neptunes and Pharell, this video hot the spot! Very detailed and smooth. Please do more of these videos and yes beginner producer videos please!
Fire tracks bro, My favorite Neptune track is run to the Sun
It's great to see you again, King Jay and this is just what I needed in continuing my crash course journey. Also, now I can't get that last Pharell clip out of my head. It was super deep!

So Dope Bro! With Pharrell Being My Idol You Really Did A Great Job On This One!!
You're my favorite music producer youtuber! No one does it like you, the way you immerse yourself in a musicians style or the style of an era is unmatched.
Neptunes down to a science! Great video man. You really nailed the sound too.
Thank you Jay, great video. As an intern at hovercraft Studios in Virginia Beach around the Kelis Clipse Era , you really did your homework bro. Thanks for making sure Chad was a part of the unit. 💯❤️😮
wow those sounds and chords are amazingly well done and produced. !!

Do music but you pretend it’s 1975
Will do!
@ jay give me tips cause I’m coming out with a album next year and I’m starting to produce my own music

Yeah!!! Can’t wait for new music.
Dope Pharrell type beat. Only thing missing was the 4 count at the beginning.
Watch the second half of the video. We did the epic 4 count in the second beat. They didn’t always do the 4 count in the early days

I see what you did there for the beat. I hear lilke 6-7 of their songs. Nicely done might I add
Jay Diggs, you're my YT Guy! You's the bi'ness when it comes to your covers, and the incredibly meticulous way that you dissect classic tunes and reinvent them my brotha'! YO great video man
That funk is fire
Sick!🔥
You can really hear the go-go influence in the Neptunes production
Nice work. I had no idea how many songs the Neptunes created until I watched the Piece by Piece lego movie.
Can you do Stevie wonder/soul stuff
My favorite track hands down from the Neptunes production is Let's Take A Ride (Countryside) by JT and my favorite Pharrell Williams produced is Just That Type Of Girl by J Hud! It's the bass line on that track for me!
It doesn't have an alternate name.
It's just Let's Tale A Ride.
Great video!
I have about 100 unfinished melodies where I'm stuck finishing them and all I seem to do is make 20 seconds sound better and better but never finishing the song. Am I the only one?
the same for me bro ahaha
Feel you bro
not alone 😭😭
Once you get to a point of “there’s nothing more to add. Then it’s time to Structure the beat and make it a full composition. Definitely study How to Structure a beats. And you’ll have more beats done.
I don't know Y, but the track thay did with Toni Braxton & Loon - Hit The Freeway really stands out 2 me.
When will we B getting Jams II?
Just subscribed !!!!!!
Then I hear a track from Justice LEAGUE or The Runners, and they almost make me stop
I don't know any chords and i make midi arrangements nearly every day. Anything is possible!

GIRLS DEM SUGAR (Beenie Man FT Mya & Pharrell)
How do you not know that song? 😂😂
@ thanks
The second demo track is a killer. You should put some vocals on it.
