⚓️Ship's Emergency Turn: Algoma Conveyor Aborts in Duluth Fog!
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 ธ.ค. 2023
- The 740-foot ship "Algoma Conveyor" arrived from Lake Superior fully loaded with salt!
Boat Friends, I have never recorded an emergency turn from a big ship in Duluth until today! The fog was very dense on Lake Superior, so I knew it would be a fun video to record of a ship in the fog. However, I didn't know it would turn into a potentially dangerous situation.
As the ship approached the Aerial Lift Bridge, I referred to the vessel as a "ghost ship" because it appeared out of nowhere from the fog. At that moment, I heard a transmission on my marine radio between the Aerial Lift Bridge and the captain of the ship. The bridge operator informed the ship that an emergency vehicle had to go over the bridge, so the ship was forced to abort the arrival and make an emergency turn back out to Lake Superior! This is because the bridge wouldn't be up in time for this ship!
I recorded the emergency vehicle with its lights flashing and siren blaring going across the bridge. I also recorded the ship making the turn as it quickly aborted! The ship did eventually turn back around as you will see from different angles but it definitely was a dramatic situation for a few minutes during this video.
The ship passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge surrounded by fog and provided a single loud horn blast, but not the standard captain's salute that we typically hear from ship horns. I was impressed by how fast the captain reacted to the emergency situation and how quick he turned that big ship at the last minute, especially with little visibility out on the lake due to fog.
This goes to the captain of the Algoma Conveyor! I want to say what a great job of being prepared for a situation like what occurred today. You made the turn quickly and in very bad conditions from a visibility standpoint. You are a true professional! You might say it was a standard situation but that is your years of experience on the water and proven leadership talking. You stayed very cool under pressure. Job well done my friend!

for everyone reading........what would you name a ship if you could?
If I could name a ship I would name it the BF Blue! The “Blue” stands for the blue Boat Friends beacon and the blue water it sails on.🔵⛴️
I know what I wouldn’t name it… the SS Minnow 🤣. I would have to say the Maitland would be my first choice.
my vote is sky bridge out of Duluth
That’s a good name
I would name it The Courageous because of having to brave the winds of November on Lake superior. Just my thought.
Ships in fog are the example of the need of great care and knowing what you are doing. The SS Andrea Doria sank in 1956 in the Atlantic after colliding with another ship in a bad fog. I was on the USS Canberra CAG-2 in very dense fog in the same general area some time between 1961-1963. We moved dead slow. So slow and with watches on every side of the ship. It seemed like days even though it was only a day or so. And every one was on edge from the Admiral down to the deck seamen. And few had a good night sleep.
Jerry, thank you so much for passing along this information to us. Please keep providing great information like this to us whenever you feel like it. It’s fantastic. You just provided information about a ship I never heard of and I can’t believe I have not. I want the boat friends to know more about the vessel Andrea Doria! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Andrea_Doria
Jerry. Yes indeed fog requires great care. I boated with my family extensively in the late 1970s and through the 1980s. We made a run from Rogers City, MI to Mackinaw Island. Got caught in pea soup fog. Couldn't even see our bow from the flying bridge. Luckily we had radar. But still it was scary as heck. We waited it out off a nearby tiny island for 5 hours. We could hear voices from nearby shore cabins, but couldn't see a thing. We were exhausted from the ordeal. Luckily we eventually docked safely at Mackinaw Island. Made a run for it with just enough visibility to give it a go. The fog took 3 days to clear so we just relaxed on the island and ate too much fudge!! @@vibewithmike
Same same 1971 Med cruise on the USS Saratoga. North Atlantic going south from NATO/Norges sjøforsvaret exercises between Iceland & Bergen. Surrounded by Norwegian fishery boats, Russian intel snoops, commercial traffic. It was absolutely creepy. From the signal bridge over the island you couldn’t see the end of the catapult runs forward& aft was invisible. Horn blast every few seconds. The fog condensed on your skin in seconds. Months later we got a photo taken out of a Norwegian sub’s periscope showing some of our crew staring out a hangar deck door.
@haramanggapuja your comments are like reading a novel. They are so fun to read. I enjoy them so much I know everybody else does too.
Hello Capt.!! Yeah, who would have thought that in December that there would be no snow Visibility of 2 miles would make it hard on the captains for sure. Looks like the gulls are getting ready for the party to start. I have not seen an emergency vehicle having to cross the bridge with a ship coming in. Glad she was far enough out so that she could turn around. I love seeing that steam coming out of the stacks. Nice!! Very nice looking ship. That blue is very cool. Too bad that there was only the single horn but I will take it. Thank you for the video. A great looking vessel. I hope you are ready for Christmas. I will be staying home but that is okay. Take care my friend and chat soon. 🙋🚢
Can you believe I caught this ship in an emergency situation? I thought I was going to go down and record a video of a ship in the fog and that was it. I never would have believed that the bridge would not go up in the ship had to abort the entry.
@@vibewithmike I believe that was a first for you. I was wondering what was happening. Why the bridge was not going up. Hope the patient in the ambulance will be okay.
What a very interesting video, Mike! That fog was so thick; and the aborted entry because of the emergency vehicle going over the bridge. I've never heard a ship do a single salute before. As always; you had a great video. I've been a proud subscriber for a year now.
I hope everybody is OK that went on that ambulance. This was pretty nerve-racking for a few minutes as I recorded it.
👍⛴️
Very impressive video. I’ve never seen a ship stop and have to wait for an emergency vehicle across the bridge before.
Yes, that emergency vehicle had to go across the bridge and the ship had to unexpectedly turn around but the captain was ready
Thanks Mike, great video the fog makes it feel like a movie
I’m glad that you enjoyed the video. It was amazing to see this captain make that quick turn at the last second. The fog did make it feel like it was during a movie. It was very cool.
Total professionalism between the bridge operator and ship captain. Their prompt attention made for a safe outcome involving not only those two parties, but also the emergency vehicle personnel needing to pass over the bridge.
Thanks for capturing all the action Mike. Made me feel proud for everyone involved.
That ship captain needs to have a high five and I know probably to him. It seems like a standard situation but you put most people in a scenario with all that heavy fog and having to quickly turn a 740 foot vessel around. That’s no easy task. What a great job to avoid a possible bad situation today.
@@vibewithmike Thanks for capturing this. Did the ambulance go back over the bridge prior to the lift? I have been in fog banks before, but visibility was pretty good otherwise she would have been sounding fog signals. Regards and Happy New Year! John - Chief Engineer, USS Manitowoc LST-1180 (after Manitowoc WI).
@john5321 John, brother, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to leave a comment. First, let me say this, Thank you for your service! It means a lot to me and many others. It’s people like you that served our country that allows me to make videos like this. Thank you!🙏🇺🇸
I didn’t see the ambulance return. Not sure what happened on the other side once it made it across. It’s wonderful having a person like you part of this boat friends community that we have on this channel. I’m sure you have any interesting days on the ship. I respect anybody that has a career in the water. Thanks again my friend. To the both friends that want to see the beautiful ship that John is on take a look here.

@@john5321 Thanks John for checking in. Really can't thank you enough for your service. Hope you stop back again.
I watched this as it happened today, on the Duluth harbor cam. I’ve spent a lot of time in Duluth and never seen this happen. Thanks for the explanation. The Captain showed some real skill with that difficult maneuver.
I was in shock as it unfolded in real life! It was amazing and cool to see that Captain step up and be cool under pressure! Thanks for your comment and for watching brother!👍
How exciting on this video!!!! I always wondered what would happen if someone had an emergency and a ship was approaching! Thanks for sharing this and documenting how the captain and the lift bridge work together for a person in need. I'm cold just watching you out there for us!!! Hope you have a warm fireplace and some hot chocolate or cider waiting for you at home!!
It was pretty crazy to hear that radio call indicating that an emergency vehicle would be becoming across the bridge and the captain decided to hit the brakes and quickly turn and make another attempt. Christmas is a few days away and I hope you are doing absolutely fabulous.
Wow have never seen that happen, but nice that they have that procedure in place to help those in need.Ship did a major spin move to,make the turn!
It was great to see you that that captain was completely prepared for this situation
@@vibewithmike He was for a fact. Hoping the Emergency was treatable and nothing serious before the Holiday. But you are right, everyone was prepared and pulled it off! That ship was doing donuts out there handles like a jet boat !
Great video of the Algoma Mike!!! Merry Christmas to you Brother and to all of the Boat friends.
Merry Christmas to you as well Art. I hope all is well in Canada. I love those Canadian owned ships and the captain is a true professional, making sure that there was no issue, making a very fast maneuver when the bridge would not go up.
Strange horn blast and no return from the bridge either….. Kind of a weird deal all the way around. Thanks Mike!
Hey there. Wonder if the bridge operator thought the captain would do another salute closer to the bridge.
@@chuckg6039 Could be for sure as I am sure he was confused if nothing else!
It was just one single blast, which I thought was really odd, but it is what it is. At least there was some horn action.
I’ve never seen a ship emergency like this!
It was definitely interesting catching a ship in an emergency like this in the captain did a great job
Thanks is Mike. Cool video as usual. Getting ready to watch Port Huron live stream camera . Both Barkers will be coming threw tonight. Have a great Christmas 🎄
That sounds like a total treat to see both barkers. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas plan. This was cool to see an emergency turnaround by ship. I have never recorded that before until today.👍⛴️
Great ship. Enjoyed the video, Mike. Thanks!
Thank you so much my friend. This was definitely a while ship video for me.
Thanks for sharing Mike, Prayers go out to the family with the medical emergency, hats off to the first responders. Here in Arizona City, Az. started raining arount 12:30 AM stoping around 9 PM tonight and 55 F Always welcome the rain here.
You are right, it had to be some type of medical emergency with the ambulance. It was bad enough where they kept the bridge down so the ambulance could make it over there. It was a pretty dramatic situation for a while during this video.
I am also in AZ. I summer on Lake Superior
@bobdelano6746 that is awesome! It’s a beautiful place to be in the summer and it’s actually not too bad of a place to be right now during the winter. There’s no snow yet Bob.
That was different. Nice to see a new vessel. Have a good one Mike!!!❤😊
It was fun to watch a brand new ship and an emergency situation went down at the same time. It was pretty fun and crazy altogether, knowing that everything was fine after the fact.
Nice to see one you don't see often. Great video as usual, Mike. Be careful out in the fog!
First time I caught an emergency turnaround by a ship, and it was in thick fog too. Unbelievable.
You seldom give us anything boring . This was soooo interesting. You put me there and part of your day.
Thank you. Little prayer for the person who needed that ambulance and for all the ships crews out there.
I agree! Prayers to those in the emergency. I’m glad the ships was able to turn in time
That is so awesome that you captured this one. Unique situation with the ship!
Emergency avoided because of a great captain on the ship. Awesome job captain.
Great looking Ships,I like seeing ships I haven't seen before,Good job Mike have a good evening.
It was so wonderful seeing this ship for the first time. I can’t wait to see it again, but I hope there’s no emergency situation like this time.
Great video. Makes me miss Duluth. I was stationed at the Duluth Air Force Base in the late 60s early 70s.
Ron, I hope you’re doing great brother. Merry Christmas. I’m glad the captain was able to avoid a bad situation with quick maneuvering during this video. Thank you for your service! It means a lot to me and many others. It’s people like you that served our country that allows me to make videos like this. Thank you!🙏🇺🇸
Merry Christmas Mike
We watch the Duluth Live cams just about every day. Our children were born in Duluth. I remember working on the jets on the flight line in minus 20 degree Temps. Thanks for all your hard work to send your videos. I check them out everyday to catch your latest ones.
Very interesting . Got to see a variety of things and that ship abort definitely a first. Thank you Mike. Hope to order some merchandise from the Boat Friend collection after the first of the year.
Betty, it’s wonderful hearing from you. I was very surprised to see the ship having to abort. Here I thought it was just going to be a fog video. Then that radio call came in and the ambulance kept the bridge down so the ship had to turn quickly. I’m happy everything turned out OK but it really had me thinking there for a moment.👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
@@vibewithmike I have no experience in shipping, but it seemed like it was plenty far enough away still to not have to abort. What are the protocols for an abort situation? How far out is the go/no-go line?
@sunarf they would rather be safe than sorry. I’ve never seen a ship. Abort like that before. It was really cool. Did you see this video? th-cam.com/video/vQdMUOjEnY0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Ts-Hus-1nFNpmwiA
Happy Holidays!!! Thanks for making this channel awesome!!!
Happy holidays to you as well. This was a very wild video today. I don’t record emergencies too often. I hope you’re having a wonderful Friday night.
Raining pretty good for the next few days in AZ. 56f. All your videos are great.
That sounds like some pretty decent weather. This captain is a true professional in this ship. The fog is one thing, but having to make a quick, evasive maneuver is another thing.
Hope all is well with crew or whatever the emergency may be.
Thanks Mike for another great video and sharing the happenings of what is going on…
I hope everything is OK with wherever the ambulance went. I’m glad the ship captain was able to make a maneuver to turn the ship around in time.
I grew up in Grand Marais Michigan. I remember standing on the shore of Superior watching freighters sail up and down the lake when I was a kid. Both my grandfathers were captains on the Great Lakes. One a captain in the coast guard and the other a commercial fisherman.
I have a ton of respect for your grandfathers! People that have a life on the water are real hard working and good people! Thank you for the comment brother! I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Hi Mike, I will be down at Canal Park tomorrow. Sometime before 11:30 am and noon.
Very foggy in Winnipeg today as well with frost on the trees everywhere. Quite unusual for December in Manitoba.
Hey, I hope everything is great there in Manitoba, my friend. This winter has been so odd for everybody. I’m glad you’re able to watch this ship video. All the best of you.
Great video, Mike. I will say that does not look like a four year old ship by the looks of the hull.
That ship definitely has been working hard
If it has been hauling salt all the time, that would explain. Salt is highly corrosive to a ship
@mikewatson4644 I love the coloring of the Algoma ships
❤ Cool video Mike..Merry Christmas to you and yours. I've never seen that situation either. Thank goodness for good communications. Everyone worked together to help someone who is ill or injured. The fog and ship looked spooky!!
Have a merry Christmas as well Susan. I hope you’re doing great. It was wonderful to see the professionalism displayed by the captain on the ship today.
How is it the end of December and there’s still no snow? 😂 Awesome ship and great video per usual.
Thanks for watching the ship video my friend
As a Duluth native, I NEVER get tired of watching the ships! Thanks Mike for these videos and keep ‘em coming!!🥰🥰
You got it friend, I’ll be doing a live stream show within the next two hours when ship departs. I’m waiting on the ship to leave.
Very Well Done and Interesting Video
Nice work Mike
Duluth is a Beautiful and Interesting City
Thank you so much Dan, hope you’re doing great. This was a fun ship to record and a crazy situation as well That turned out good.
Great job. Good thing the Conveyer wasn’t any closer. She may have had to drop anchor in the channel to let the ambulance get through. Or maybe the ambulance would just have to wait for the ship to clear the bridge.
That’s a good point, they would’ve have dropped anchor! That would’ve been crazy and scary too!
36 air temp, 36 dew point equals fog. Relative humidity of 100 percent.
The fog is crazy out right now in Duluth Chuck
I love it! You showed far enough up the river to see my son’s peninsula, one of those fingers on the Duluth side of the water.
Does your son live on Park Point?
Idk why but ships & fog go together so well. No matter the ship, the age, or anything. Vessels always some how look more extrodinary in fog.
It’s like peanut butter and jelly
What a great video, Mike. Thank you for this one!
I hope that everyone has their families gathering with them for Christmas now and within the next three days and are already having a great time. Christmas is just magical.
I’ve said it before, but thank you again, Mike for creating a channel that brings so many kind folks together, when TH-cam overall is filled with so much negativity on so many channels. This channel is positivity in a negative world. Glad to see 18,500 of you on here!
From Tomball, Texas, Merry Christmas to all of you!
Thank you so much, my friend. You and I have shoveled just as much snow between Duluth and Texas. Unbelievable. I hope you have a wonderful weekend in store. It was crazy to catch a ship with an emergency situation in this video.
I agree about all the negativity going on these days. Mike's channel brings me much peace, joy, and happiness. So many good people here.
Well said, Chuck. Thank goodness there are still “small spaces” like Mike’s channel here where people are happy and show decency.
Bless you and Merry Christmas to you, Sir.
@Shaken_AND_Stirred have a very merry Christmas my friend
Always enjoyed seeing the Algoma vessels come into Thunder Bay when I lived there.
I really want to get up to thunder bay to do a ship video
Cool video, out here in Sacramento ca we really get fog. 1.75 mi visibility would be a treat. Very normal to get fog with 1/4:mi visibility. Bad enough to drive a car.
Sailing a large ship no thanks.
That emergency maneuver really cool. Safety first.
You definitely have a lot of fog there in your neck of the woods in Sacramento. That’s an every day thing for you. It doesn’t happen a lot in Duluth but when it does, it’s pretty exciting.
I hope that for whatever reason they required an emergency return and ambulance for crew, that everything is okay 🧡
I totally agree with you, my friend. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Thank you so much Mike. Supposed to be almost 70 in Missouri tomorrow Have a very Merry Christmas bud
That is unbelievably warm. I will take that any day. Have a fantastic Christmas my friend. Thanks again Matt.
Wow! Quite the dramatic morning at the lift bridge. I want to get up there and see it someday in person, Duluth seems like such a cool town and I'd love to see the freighters. I'm outside Chicago, so it's about a 7-8 hour drive.
I will be going down to the lift bridge in a few moments to capture all of these waves. You will see that video tonight around 4 PM. It’ll all be a 4K footage.
Hey Mike and all Boat Friend Nation from a balmy 31 degree wind chilled degrees. Missed live feed, and scary fog it looks like in Dtown.
What up Chuck!!!!!!!!! I hope you’re doing great. Can you imagine that I just went down to record a nice ship in the fog and it ended up being an emergency situation.
@@vibewithmike I tell you what, it was interesting and not something you could predict and plan for! That is why these live walkabouts are the Bomb as you never know……
@chucke4294 that’s exactly right, you can’t script when you don’t know what’s coming!
You didnt notice the fish swirl in the video by the rocks. Had to play it back 3 times. Pretty cool. Looked like a salmon.
What is the timestamp where you see the fish?
Mike I watch your videos right before I go to bed they make me sleep better 👍

Great Video Mike I Enjoyed It Nice Ship This Is The First Time Seeing It There Was On The News About A Cruise Ship Named MV Maud That Hit A Rogue Wave Have A Great Friday Night😊
Wow. I just read about that. Glad everyone is ok. The ship was in a fierce storm in the North Sea. It's being towed back to port.
Here’s that story about the cruise ship www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/22/norwegian-cruise-ship-ms-maud-loses-power-navigation-system
The bridge can't be up if an Ambulance needs to come right back. So I wonder who gives the bridge the all clear to resume operation? The ambulance company? 911 Dispatch? Keep up the good work Mike. I'm betting I saw The Fitzgerald come and go a few times as a kid.
The more I thought about it I believe the
911 Communication Center probably has a direct radio that is inside of the lift bridge. The only time the radio sounds is when the 911 dispatch needs to get a hold of the bridge. That’s my guess. I wish I could go back many years ago and see the Fitzgerald myself. Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
As a kid we would spot a ship, alert the parents, hop in the car and get to the canal before it arrived. I was ten when The Fitz sank so I feel confident I waved to them a few times. @@vibewithmike

Here in western Nebraska, I had 59° F today. Forecast calls for 3" - 6" of snow Saturday night through Sunday morning.
I would assume that the 911 people coordinate with the bridge operator when they have a call for Park Point. Do you know for sure?
Thanks for the video. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas
I’ll bet you’re right that emergency operator has the ability to communicate with the bridge or maybe there’s a radio that they can communicate with the bridge to get instant access. Either way, it was amazing to see this emergency take place and the captain react quickly.
That wind is a “dead calm” one!
Totally nothing going on. Those flags were not moving with the wind at all but the fog was out there.
That fog up there tonight is THICK, wow!
There’s even more fog right now this evening in Duluth. It was amazing to see that ship in the fog and to see a captain that knew how to make that hard turn quick.
Great video, Mike! Fog definitely makes things interesting!
The fog made this video incredible but what was even more incredible is the captain that was able to make a very fast emergency maneuver to make sure there was no danger since the bridge had to make way for that emergency vehicle

Hey friend! I’m glad you enjoyed the ship. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
A very good looking ship. 😊
Beautiful video!
Thanks friend
@@vibewithmike Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Great video Mike. That was a strange salute. And no return from the bridge?
There was only one horn blast. It was very strange. I agree
12C here in Calgary today…crazy weather.
I hope everything is great for you, Pam. Sounds like decent weather there in Calgary. One of your Canadian ships came through here today. This captain did a great job making that fast turn today.
@@vibewithmike I saw that! He really did do a great job of it. I’m looking forward to having 4 days off, so it’s all good.
@pamberry7162 that is so wonderful to hear you have this extended weekend. I wish all the best to you and thank you so much for taking time to write a comment. It means a lot. All the best to you my friend.👍⛴️
One of the "seaway max" vessels. Largest ship that can navigate the seaway aka. Welland Canal and the StLawrence seawy.
Boat Friends, more info about what our friend is talking about. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seawaymax
wow you had a lot of time to do a bunch of stuff and give a ton of info while you were waiting...nice.
Hey, thanks brother! I really didn’t know too much about ships not too long ago so I did a lot of research and I’m just trying to pass along information to people so they can get interested in ships like I am. I didn’t really have many people to talk to about ships over the years so it’s really really fun engaging with people that like ships now. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Oh yeah I subbed right away cause I am a Boat friend too!@@vibewithmike
@wientz you are the best
She's got some wear and tear
great vid mike do you have wolves in your area? Have you ever seen a wild free one?
Many years ago, I was up by two harbors Minnesota, and I did see a wolf in the wild. I also have seen many coyotes. They are around this area though, but they are pretty good at keeping themselves hidden. If I ever see one, I’ll let you know. I hope you enjoyed this ship video. Very rarely do I see an an emergency ship situation like this happen.
Why dont you view a ship coming in from the light house way out at the end of the north side. It would be great to get a view from that perspective.
I usually try to stay away from the north pier lighthouse, cause there’s always a bunch of people standing there, but at some point I will
Cool.
Mary, my friend in Texas! Take a look at this fog video from yesterday that posted th-cam.com/video/_tnIezrKvRI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Y5-41DtvhcJhm8lt
Hi Mike,
Why are the “lakers” built with such a “rounded bow” where as ocean going ships have more pointed bows?
Thanks John
They are round for several reasons. Better able to punch through ice, able to maximize cargo capacity. Bulkers don't need the speed salties do, so a rounded hull works just fine.
1000 foot Great Lakes ships were constructed to fit into the lock (i.e. Soo Locks) without room to spare. It is all’s about maximizing the cargo capacity. Look at the photo linked below. You can see how those big ships are molded to the Soo Lock chamber.

Coming in the fog is tough let alone having to make a emergency turn
Double whammy dog and emergency turn! 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚑🚑🚑🚑⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Did they used to make these ships in Duluth? Sault Ste. Marie? What differences are there between the old and the new one's built in China - engine efficiencies, better crew amenities? ...
Thanks for these cool videos.
It has everything to do with cost. These were built before that place like American shipbuilding company but not many of these are being made anymore in the United States. It’s all cost.
There can't be too many places on fresh water that need a light to tell you which way the current's flowing. Is that purely the wind pushing the water out and then letting it come back, or am I missing something? I don't think tide is likely to be much of a factor, big as Superior is.
Edit I looked it up. High and low pressure zones in the atmosphere suck the water into one end of the lake or press it down and make it flow away. That's one big lake.
Interesting you bring this up. It does appear like there’s a tide, but what it really is that you are seeing is a Seiche. I had to learn about this myself not too long ago. I didn’t even know the word. Even though they are talking about Lake Erie in this video, it’ll explain what that meaning is. th-cam.com/video/B6AQxktoYhU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tig_mdjrXvghTsBe
It was as your panning from the 1.56 second spot. I could see it clearer on the first time I watched it.

Mid 70's for Christmas and Christmas Eve
Hey friend, can you believe that Christmas and Christmas Eve is already upon us? Where does time go?
I know this year went fast Marry Christmas
@ThomasEKouri it’s already going to be 2024. If you watch back to the future cars should’ve been flying by now.
There is a railroad in Canada also called the algoma central
Boat Friends, here’s what Tony is taking about. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algoma_Central_Railway
Hi Tony. I actually took that train. Left the Soo, and turned around after a few hours. Was a fun ride. Took good part of a day.
@chuckg6039 that’s cool Chuck
Well I just learned of another light on the bridge and what it signifies....
Really, tell us about it
@@vibewithmike learned about the Red & Green in the center of the bridge the other day and now the slake tide amber light, I’m getting smarter every day because of your site
@joecody195 it’s fun learning about the ships and the bridge. I’m learning a lot from many people and it’s fun passing it along.
Dreary looking day. Fog is my least favorite to drive in.
This is the first time I ever recorded a ship doing an emergency turn like this
No snow in December but fog and rain is so weird
It's like that where I am in northern Arizona
That’s crazy. I’d love to be in Arizona right now.
That’s crazy. I’d love to be in Arizona right now.
Come on down. It's gonna rain tonight an tomorrow.
Does Great Lakes shipping get shut down for a couple of months, usually until mid March, due to winter?
As per federal orders, the Soo Locks close on January 15 and re-open March 25 (www.lre.usace.army.mil/Media/News-Releases/Article/2899037/soo-locks-closing-for-seasonal-repair-maintenance/) every year. During this time maintenance is performed on the chambers. Although there are occasional exceptions, such as ice, these two dates are pillars for shipping season in the Great Lakes. As soon as the clock strikes midnight on March 25, freighters, tugboats, luxury crafts and more can resume lockage between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Check this article for a little more information. saultstemarie.com/shipping-season-starts-soon-in-sault-ste-marie/ (saultstemarie.com/shipping-season-starts-soon-in-sault-ste-marie/)
Hey Mike I just realized when you pointed out the life boat on this ship that I haven't noticed any life boats on other vessels. I'm sure they have them, but I've not noticed any
Hi Mike. That orange life boat is called a Free-Fall life boat. Since 2006 they have been required on all new bulk carriers. The Mark W Barker ship built in 2022 in Sturgeon Bay, WI has such a life boat.....and is required to do so.
Pre 2006 Great Lakes bulkers use life rafts housed in fiberglass cannisters which automatically open when submerged and/or open life boats mounted on davits.
There are other lifeboats on the other ships. I’ll have to point them out in the future.👍⛴️
@chuckg6039 thanks for the great information Chuck.
@vibewithmike great info! Thanks for the explanation my friend!
@@MikefromTennessee Glad to help Mike. Hope you continue to stop back. Merry Christmas.
Ever since you first filmed it, I've been wondering how's Santa doing on top of the light?
Santa is hanging in there but he will be busy in a few nights!!!!!!!!!!🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅😂😂😂😂👍👍👍
@@vibewithmike Go Santa!
I always try to get that Santa on the lighthouse in the videos 👍🎅😂🎅
I thought I saw a ghost ship but it was just some crap on my phone.
We saw the ghost ship, but then all of a sudden the bridge had an emergency
No literally when you pointed out at the canal and said we'll see a ghost ship. There was a little schmutz right there on my screen... I thunk oooooh cool.
@ralphyboy3636 as long as it’s a friendly ghost then we are OK! 👍👍👍👍👍👻👻👻👻👻👻
Where port did the ship load the salt at?
I’m not too sure, I believe someone in Canada I remember? Someone might know better.
You haven’t mentioned the blue light lately, did i miss hearing something about that?
The blue Boat Friends Beacon was on the pole last night for the American Integrity
Must’ve been the fog that kept me from seeing it. My son lives on one of those peninsulas that look like fingers, sticking out into the St. Lawrence River, on the Duluth side , near that walking trail, which goes between his house & his waterfront. He drives east on that major road into the city & works @ a hospital just past the bridge, so i can see both locations on the harbor map by stretching it out just a little. He works nights, & i don’t think he goes out of his way to watch the ships, but took us across the bridge when showing us around. Oct, 2022.
My bad, it was 10/21 when we were there, not 22.
