I understand the reasons why Mother 1+2 would be considered a bad version. Especially for a new player, it's really not a good version to play. Me personally, I really enjoyed it. I know the music gets a lot of flack (some of which is very accurate; "Welcome Home" comes to mind), but I'd say 70% of it I could tolerate. Also, I found the game played quicker compared to the SNES version. Like menus (in and out of battles) and transitioning between areas are a lot faster, which I really appreciated. It gives a similar sense of nostalgia I felt when I grew up playing the GBA version of A Link to the Past. Not the best version, but I appreciate it for what it is.
Understandable that the game would run faster, as the GBA had a faster processor than the Super Nintendo did, despite constantly being labeled as the handheld SNES, the GBA was technologically superior to it.

The Mother games were a huge part of my childhood, teen years, and early adulthood. It has been strange to see new fans filter in and out and make up different generations of the community. Parts of my core time in the fandom has begun to disappear in the cracks of the early internet, links and sites entirely now defunct. I also second mother 2 deluxe, especially because it made me appreciate jeff's tools a lot more by making them their own menu rather than taking up space in the inventory
Awesome video. I'd rather recommend Mother 2: Perfect Edition, which takes everything from the Maternalbound and also relocalizes the game to remove censorship and make the script more akin to the japanese version. Also, some of the versions you mentioned aren't 'ports', like the 3DS, SNES mini and the WiiU versions. In fact, the only actual port is the GBA version. All the others are just emulated roms with slightly changes to avoid seizures, as you mentioned.
I love mother 1+2 personally, but I know it’s only cause it was the first time I got to play earthbound on official hardware, which means a lot to me. As a collector now, getting my hands on the SNES version would be ideal, and I have the switch port, but I still keep going back to mother 1+2 for some reason. I gotta say, in 2022 I completed a work in progress version of the mother 1+2 English translation (I dubbed it Mother+Earthbound). It was complete, tho hasn’t been made official and I didn’t mind it, especially on the tiny game boy micro screen :)

Speaking of mods that refresh the game for experienced players, Mother 2 Deluxe Edition is worth mentioning, does a lot of the script reversions that Maternalbound does, and also changes up a lot of mechanics, too many things to list quickly, while trying not to ruin the spirit of the game. There's some stuff to help the player along the way but overall it's a good bit more difficult, would recommend it to anyone looking to replay Earthbound for the umpteenth time with a fresh feel.
Honestly, the first time I finished a game of Earthbound was via the Mother 1+2 English Patch. Aside from names and items, it was completely in Japanese. My favourite thing bout mother 1+2 is the fact that wuth mother 1 you no longer have to go through a menu to interact with anything and instead you can just press L you could already do that on the snes version of earthbound, but it's really nice to see that feature backported into mother 1.
seeing the calculator version of earthbound really makes me wonder if it would be possible to maybe make a version for the more powerful ti calculators out there, like the 84+ce or something like that (no the emulated version on the Inspire does not count i mean like an actual port)
I actually haven't yet tried Mother 1+2 on GBA yet… Not out of choice, but rather a lack of decent accessibility; There's only one English fan translation I know of, and it's just EarthBound Beginnings that got the full translation (though not based on the official localization). I honestly would love to try it out one of these days and see what it's like, whenever it may be that there'll be a patch that 1:1 ports the localization efforts and changes the original NES and SNES localizations gave (not that I dismiss fan localizations entirely)
Thankfully, it was revealed to be nothing more than an attempt to sabotage his career and life (But sadly, it worked) Edit: Actually, it didn't work! He's back!
I have a hard time seeing what the need is for a retranslation to attempt to literalize the script when the localization we got was so phenomenal (especially for that era) in the first place. It even added one of my favorite jokes: "I'm such a lucky man!"
Y'all forgot about Mother 2 Deluxe, it's one of the best ways to experience the game for returning players. It'll be even better once the newest version is released...
i played and beat the game in 2020 on the 3ds virtual console, but the actual first time i played it was somewhere from 2018-2019 by projecting my phone emulator onto the tv :) the phone screen would go black except for the buttons which weren't projected onto the tv screen so the phone essentially worked as a controller. was possibly the coziest i've ever felt playing a game for some reason.

Glad you enjoyed :)
The fan made PC port that would inevitably happen given enough time, like it happened for Super Mario 64
My favourite thing bout mother 1+2 is the fact that wuth mother 1 you no longer have to go through a menu to interact with anything and instead you can just press L you could already do that on the snes version of earthbound, but it's really nice to see that feature backported into mother 1.
I LOVE how AMAZING work does the Mother's community. THE BEST FANDOM FOR THE BEST GAME!!! :")
How about Mother 2 Deluxe?

The best EarthBound Version is Contact for the DS!
for my money the best way to play earthbound is listening to king crimson's 1972 live album "earthbound"
5:19 did not age well 😬😬
That comment didn't age well
When I was in high school, I attempted to make a small battle game on my ti83 calculator that was based on Earthbound's battle system.
seeing the calculator version of earthbound really makes me wonder if it would be possible to maybe make a version for the more powerful ti calculators out there, like the 84+ce or something like that (no the emulated version on the Inspire does not count i mean like an actual port)
I actually haven't yet tried Mother 1+2 on GBA yet… Not out of choice, but rather a lack of decent accessibility; There's only one English fan translation I know of, and it's just EarthBound Beginnings that got the full translation (though not based on the official localization). I honestly would love to try it out one of these days and see what it's like, whenever it may be that there'll be a patch that 1:1 ports the localization efforts and changes the original NES and SNES localizations gave (not that I dismiss fan localizations entirely)

ouch. Unlucky with that chugga recommendation. Man, it is what it is
Thankfully, it was revealed to be nothing more than an attempt to sabotage his career and life
(But sadly, it worked)
Edit: Actually, it didn't work! He's back!
I have a hard time seeing what the need is for a retranslation to attempt to literalize the script when the localization we got was so phenomenal (especially for that era) in the first place. It even added one of my favorite jokes: "I'm such a lucky man!"
I see no harm in having both, it's not replacing the localization after all.
2:54 i found one at a local game store yesterday, didn’t buy it, but it was about $100, so yeah…
This feels like a Cybershell video
I get there's updates to MaternalBound, but which one is the most updated???
Y'all forgot about Mother 2 Deluxe, it's one of the best ways to experience the game for returning players. It'll be even better once the newest version is released...
Didn't forget, just not super familiar with everything about it and didn't want to misreport on it.
That David Lγnch clip made me burst out laughing, thanks for that 🤣
I actually live in tucson where Fangamer calls home. I went there for the holiday shopping season last year
i played and beat the game in 2020 on the 3ds virtual console, but the actual first time i played it was somewhere from 2018-2019 by projecting my phone emulator onto the tv :) the phone screen would go black except for the buttons which weren't projected onto the tv screen so the phone essentially worked as a controller. was possibly the coziest i've ever felt playing a game for some reason.

Today I decided I wanted to play Earthbound, so I obtained a copy for my steam deck. Haven't played it yet and saw your video, and it made me reconsider my opinions for playing the game. Thank you.
I love the Cybershell influence on this one.
Honestly, im glad my brother got the snes classic as early as he did, now i can play earthbound without having to pay for it monthly
