As a kid I liked the photo guy for some reason. It was like a nice surprise and seeing all the photos at the end credit made me feel all kinds of emotions.
To me he’s just the main example of Earthbound’s humor. Just from out of the sky a man descends and stops everything, tells you to say “Fuzzy Pickles” and leaves back up into the sky.
His pictures compared to the end are accurately displayed too when the credits roll for the most part. If you miss a pic it wont be there. SOME of the photos maintain the entire context of the picture so if a character is facing the wrong way he or she would be at the end.

Earthbound seems to be a game that's really a reflection of the youths of the programmers who pieced it together, along with their fears and memories. This in turn is a shared memory in their own way for the others who have played it by making them reflect on their own lives now that they are older.

I played this when I was a teenager and never really understood younger ness meeting older ness. I’m 45 now and midway through this video, I stopped what I was doing and played ball with my 2 year old and we laughed so much. That moment was irreplaceable.
My cousin Jonathan passed away a little over a year ago, and one of my great gaming memories is playing Earthbound with him. Earthbound and FFXI were 2 games that I really only could share with him IRL.
The music throughout this game was always one of the best on the system. They covered such a crazy amount of genres and it was all over the place yet still fit right into the world seamlessly

In that case, you might really like Mother 3 considering all of the flaws you pointed out in this video are basically non-existent in that game. On top of that, Mother 3 has a phenomenal story and more emphasis on character development. If EarthBound freaked you out or weirded you out, then Mother 3 will make you cry. EarthBound is all about fighting against the things that are preventing you from moving forward, and Mother 3 is about letting go of all the things tying you back.
Giygas is actually an alien. According to mother 1 you see him as an alien. Only issue is that he is named differently in both mother 1 and mother 2. The story indicates that Giygas was raised by a human couple named maria and george. While maria sang to the baby giygas as if she was its mother, George secretly studied the ailen technology. Learning about PSI. After george escaped, Giygas swore revenge and started conquering multiple planets. Eventually he got so powerful that his body literally couldn’t hold it all and he became the embodiment of pure evil, Unable to think rationally anymore.

I love this game because it taught me back then about how to spend your money appropriately. I lost 20k on Summers hospital only to realize that its only $50 to revive your friends on Onett and teleportation only costs 2PP and a bit of my patience. Truly a life changing experience. It still hurts but it does drill in the point.

I have to confess, this is probably the best AVGN episode ever, it's a masterpiece. Started off as a funny episode, then ended up being quite philosophical and emotional. A true masterpiece. Thank you nerd.
Another way to look at it, is that it was just a "memory" of his dad constantly calling him. (Of course, the idea of someone literally calling him on the phone, while in his mind, is quite funny.)
I really get a kick out of Ninten's dad in Earthbound prototype for NES. I love how they drew him with a trenchcoat and a hat, at a payphone trying to call his son again. The dialogue is great too.
I really like this episode because it goes less on the angry and talks about a good game in an interesting way. It shows the avgn character can have more depth than just anger
I love this game. It's consistently weird and fun. I even love how they made it a challenge to teleport. Somehow it got my full attention with all the choices on the Mini SNES.
This is currently my favorite AVGN. Honestly if Rolfe had ended everything here, I think it would had concluded perfectly. This is just such a large overarching story that I think humbled the character that allowed him to fight one of the greatest incarnations of evil that threatens reality. Some moments genuinely gave me chills.

The abortion theory is half true. You're not going inside Ness's mother to abort the baby. You're going inside her in the past to rid Giygas's evil inside the fetus of Ness.
I remember playing Earthbound when I was pretty young and even now, I'm still unsure as to whether or not my memories of the game weren't part of some messed up fever dream.
My favorite episodes are when he reviews well-known and beloved games such as Earthbound and give it the "tough love" treatment. He really likes the fun and gives them a very detailed look but he will significantly highlight the overlooked or apparent flaws with the game. I would to see more formats like this in the future.
Replaying the game as an adult, I realized the dad phone calls in EarthBound are just like the dad phone calls in real life. He knows you're calling because you just need one minor thing, but you still need to visit on the phone for a minute to let him know you're doing alright.
Just saying if you look at giygas upside down you will actually see giegue. Also giegue's alien race were originally the only one to have psychic abilities until it was leaked to the humans which lead to giegue's invasion on earth. He was beaten by Ninten, Ness' ancestor, so this theory about giegue being reborn thousand times over doesn't make sense unless every single time giegues reincarnation gave humanity the knowledge of PSI.
@@trydodis690 Ness isn't a descendant of ninten. If so, it would somehow be possible for someone to have a kid that's about 13 in 199x, while being 11 in 198x. This means the theory is impossible due to the fact both games don't happen far apart from each other.
One thing that I really liked after finishing this game is that the credits won't roll after the final boss and a final cutscene in the moments afterward, like in most games and RPGs. Instead, the game has you backtrack from Saturn Valley to Onett on foot... leaving you with this empty moment, when you just walk and reflect upon your experience. This moment was just magical...
All those little nuances are what make the game so charming to me. It was my favorite game growing up and still my favorite game to this day. I've played it all the way through at least 25 times.
Undertale would never exist without this game. The developers had a problem, their development is very slow which could take 2 years. But then satoro iwata saved the day by helping the developers make the game for just six months. Iwata is a Nintendo legend
And he took Masahiro Sakurai under his wing, who himself became a gaming legend with his hands in multiple franchises, who in turn MIGHT have become colleagues with Toby Fox, another genius who made Undertale! It's like One for All but in C++!

I think it's his everlasting passion for film-making that preserves his charm, I mean it's been 14 years, there aren't a lot of series that can last that long without getting stale or having to essentially reboot or make a sequel, the only series I can think of off the top of my head that pulled that off is One Piece

I can also imagine a live action Earthbound movie made in the 90s but not sh*tty like the Mario movie. More like Rocky or the Lord of the Rings with it's multiple parts and well done.
I remember buying Earthbound while it was on sale at my local Kmart. I bought it because I was looking for another RPG for my Super Nintendo after finishing Ogre Battle and Chrono Trigger. Amazing game with a beautiful soundtrack. I dare say it’s the best Super Nintendo game in my opinion right next to Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid.
After you beat Giygas it's cool to travel the world and see what's up and I found it very humbling and surreal to drop off Paula back at her house before going home yourself. At the very least re-explore Onett, as you can run into certain NPC's like Frank who is now working at the pizza place. You came a long way on your journey and it's a unique experience for an RPG to be able to see the good that you've accomplished abolishing evil, and even continue doing things like buying that house on the cliff you couldn't afford at the beginning if you never went back for it. It gets me in my feels and I've replayed it a few times as i've gotten older and the appreciation ONLY grows. it isn't perfect, but it is a masterpiece to me and many others. In many ways decades ahead of its time (enemies flee from you as you over take them in power, something many rpgs i WISH would copy).
In the final area, you can stay alive by having Poo "mirror" the atomic bot. Defend with all people except Poo, and he'll regularly replenish HP to max for all your characters.
Came back here after 2 years to say that this continues to be the best episode of AVGN in history. The love this game received here made my 12 year old self cry in happiness. So many people I knew thought I was weird for loving this game. Years later, it was awesome to see the huge community behind this game.
the dad constantly asking if you want to take a break is the developers way of trying to teach kids to take a break and go do something else, like go outside
I rented this game back in the day on a whim from the box art and became hooked. Never beat it m, but was always drawn to how deep it was. It used to annoy me that you would get hot in the desert and could die just walking around, but also a cool mechanic I never experienced before as a kid. Love this game.
The Mother series, has always been vague. Even with Ness's inclusion to Smash, nobody really PLAYED his game. However, I think what James did here, was special. He introduced 9 million people to this game! More, and more people are starting to look back on this game. Expanding its horizons, far and wide!

Earthbound is easily one of the best games that I have ever played from start to finish. It took me about 50 hours to complete because I did a lot of level grinding. And I didn't get the "Sword of Kings."

One of the best games on SNES and one of the best games ever in general. I actually liked the marketing of this game. I remember seeing the scratch and sniff advertisements in my EGM magazines and wanting this game lol. It was also the only game I can remember that actually gave you the entire strategy book with the game.

To add to the "Ness is the reincarnation of Giygas" theory, it would make sense then that the evil side of ness and the statue that terrorizes the people in various parts in the game are the same thing, just another representation of giygas still asleep inside of Ness. Also buzz buzz said that Giygas attacked 10 years in the future, when Ness is an adult. Which could be associated with Ness losing all his child-like purity. And that mixes well with the coming-of-age themes of Earthbound. Starting as a silly kids adventure and slowly growing into more mature topics and responsibilites, Ness' parents even say that, after the adventure, he was talking just like an adult. So the war against Giygas could be translated to the war against loosing the childhood purity, thats why most of the time you are not really fighting Giygas in this supposed war, but you are trying to relive your childhood through these sounds and win over your darker side. Or at least thats my take on it, beautiful game :)

Ive been watching you since i was a kid in 2007 and I think this is your magnum opus. Its not an angry review but its such a great love letter to earthbound and makes me want to play it again. The music throughout this game was always one of the best on the system. They covered such a crazy amount of genres and it was all over the place yet still fit right into the world seamlessly

The two composers pushed the SNES's sound hardware. One of them was Hip Tanaka famous for working on Donkey Kong Arcade sound effects, Mario Bros. In that case, you might really like Mother 3 considering all of the flaws you pointed out in this video are basically non-existent in that game. On top of that, Mother 3 has a phenomenal story and more emphasis on character development. If EarthBound freaked you out or weirded you out, then Mother 3 will make you cry. EarthBound is all about fighting against the things that are preventing you from moving forward, and Mother 3 is about letting go of all the things tying you back.

Learning about PSI. After george escaped, Giygas swore revenge and started conquering multiple planets. I know you’re the Angry Video Game Nerd but I really enjoy the reviews of actual good games like this one.
I love this game because it taught me back then about how to spend your money appropriately. I lost 20k on Summers hospital only to realize that its only $50 to revive your friends on Onett and teleportation only costs 2PP and a bit of my patience. Truly a life changing experience. It still hurts but it does drill in the point.
There was one of the later levels that had an area in the corner on the map but I never found out how to get there.
Couldn't you revive them with healing at thar point? Maybe it was later on in the game but it definitely was the best option.

I really get a kick out of Ninten's dad in Earthbound prototype for NES. I love how they drew him with a trenchcoat and a hat, at a payphone trying to call his son again. The dialogue is great too.

I love this game. It's consistently weird and fun. I even love how they made it a challenge to teleport. Somehow it got my full attention with all the choices on the Mini SNES.
This is currently my favorite AVGN. Honestly if Rolfe had ended everything here, I think it would had concluded perfectly. This is just such a large overarching story that I think humbled the character that allowed him to fight one of the greatest incarnations of evil that threatens reality. Some moments genuinely gave me chills.

Graphically the game looks great. It holds up beautifully after 28 years. One of the best games on the SNES.

My favorite episodes are when he reviews well-known and beloved games such as Earthbound and give it the "tough love" treatment. He really likes the fun and gives them a very detailed look but he will significantly highlight the overlooked or apparent flaws with the game. I would to see more formats like this in the future.
Replaying the game as an adult, I realized the dad phone calls in EarthBound are just like the dad phone calls in real life. He knows you're calling because you just need one minor thing, but you still need to visit on the phone for a minute to let him know you're doing alright.

giygas is just a really demented giegue (mother 1)
Just saying if you look at giygas upside down you will actually see giegue. Also giegue's alien race were originally the only one to have psychic abilities until it was leaked to the humans which lead to giegue's invasion on earth. He was beaten by Ninten, Ness' ancestor, so this theory about giegue being reborn thousand times over doesn't make sense unless every single time giegues reincarnation gave humanity the knowledge of PSI.
@@trydodis690 Ness isn't a descendant of ninten. If so, it would somehow be possible for someone to have a kid that's about 13 in 199x, while being 11 in 198x. This means the theory is impossible due to the fact both games don't happen far apart from each other.

One thing that I really liked after finishing this game is that the credits won't roll after the final boss and a final cutscene in the moments afterward, like in most games and RPGs. Instead, the game has you backtrack from Saturn Valley to Onett on foot... leaving you with this empty moment, when you just walk and reflect upon your experience. This moment was just magical...

Undertale would never exist without this game. The developers had a problem, their development is very slow which could take 2 years. But then satoro iwata saved the day by helping the developers make the game for just six months. Iwata is a Nintendo legend

I remember buying Earthbound while it was on sale at my local Kmart. I bought it because I was looking for another RPG for my Super Nintendo after finishing Ogre Battle and Chrono Trigger. Amazing game with a beautiful soundtrack. I dare say it’s the best Super Nintendo game in my opinion right next to Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid.

This is one of those games where i think the story line and experience, is more paramount to the gameplay itself.

At the magicant part it sounded as if he was going to shift the series towards good games. Or maybe it is just me...
After you beat Giygas it's cool to travel the world and see what's up and I found it very humbling and surreal to drop off Paula back at her house before going home yourself. At the very least re-explore Onett, as you can run into certain NPC's like Frank who is now working at the pizza place. You came a long way on your journey and it's a unique experience for an RPG to be able to see the good that you've accomplished abolishing evil, and even continue doing things like buying that house on the cliff you couldn't afford at the beginning if you never went back for it.
It gets me in my feels and I've replayed it a few times as i've gotten older and the appreciation ONLY grows. it isn't perfect, but it is a masterpiece to me and many others. In many ways decades ahead of its time (enemies flee from you as you over take them in power, something many rpgs i WISH would copy).
Ohhh so it's actually like Dragon Quest, that's amazing!
In the final area, you can stay alive by having Poo "mirror" the atomic bot. Defend with all people except Poo, and he'll regularly replenish HP to max for all your characters.
Came back here after 2 years to say that this continues to be the best episode of AVGN in history. The love this game received here made my 12 year old self cry in happiness. So many people I knew thought I was weird for loving this game. Years later, it was awesome to see the huge community behind this game.

I rented this game back in the day on a whim from the box art and became hooked. Never beat it m, but was always drawn to how deep it was. It used to annoy me that you would get hot in the desert and could die just walking around, but also a cool mechanic I never experienced before as a kid. Love this game.

The Mother series, has always been vague. Even with Ness's inclusion to Smash, nobody really PLAYED his game. However, I think what James did here, was special. One of the best games on SNES and one of the best games ever in general. I actually liked the marketing of this game.
I remember seeing the scratch and sniff advertisements in my EGM magazines and wanting this game lol. It was also the only game I can remember that actually gave you the entire strategy book with the game.
Never thought a good game would be one of AVGN's best episodes.

To add to the "Ness is the reincarnation of Giygas" theory, it would make sense then that the evil side of ness and the statue that terrorizes the people in various parts in the game are the same thing, just another representation of giygas still asleep inside of Ness. Also buzz buzz said that Giygas attacked 10 years in the future, when Ness is an adult. Which could be associated with Ness losing all his child-like purity. And that mixes well with the coming-of-age themes of Earthbound. Starting as a silly kids adventure and slowly growing into more mature topics and responsibilites, Ness' parents even say that, after the adventure, he was talking just like an adult.
So the war against Giygas could be translated to the war against loosing the childhood purity, thats why most of the time you are not really fighting Giygas in this supposed war, but you are trying to relive your childhood through these sounds and win over your darker side. Or at least thats my take on it, beautiful game :)

Only problem is that it's strongly believed by many that Giygas is the same person as Giegue, the antagonist of Mother 1.
@@CantusTropus could be two different reincarnations of the same guy but at different points in time. To be honest i haven't played mother 1 and i don't even know if there is an official timeline or if mother 1 and 2 even exist on the same universe

@@CantusTropus I always saw Earthbound as more of a spiritual successor than a sequel, where it's branded as a sequel, but it's not like they actually take place on the same timeline. Just separate stories.
Ive been watching you since i was a kid in 2007 and I think this is your magnum opus. Its not an angry review but its such a great love letter to earthbound and makes me want to play it again. Few reviews, positive or negative, actively make me want to pick a game up. Thanks for making it, and im sure im going to come back and watch it again for many years to come.
