- When the Nerd finds a copy of Nintendo Power exuding a belief that EarthBound was a rotten game, he later finds reviews that show how glamorous the game was and reveals a fanbase for a title he now has to play. So he does - via the Super NES Classic Edition - and provides an insight about the game's various flaws but well-thought out gameplay. This is Angry Videogame Nerd episode 156

I played this when I was a teenager and never really understood younger ness meeting older ness. I’m 45 now and midway through this video, I stopped what I was doing and played ball with my 2 year old and we laughed so much.

To me he’s just the main example of Earthbound’s humor. Just from out of the sky a man descends and stops everything, tells you to say “Fuzzy Pickles” and leaves back up into the sky.
His pictures compared to the end are accurately displayed too when the credits roll for the most part. If you miss a pic it wont be there. SOME of the photos maintain the entire context of the picture so if a character is facing the wrong way he or she would be at the end.
Giygas is actually an alien. According to mother 1 you see him as an alien. Only issue is that he is named differently in both mother 1 and mother 2. The story indicates that Giygas was raised by a human couple named maria and george. While maria sang to the baby giygas as if she was its mother, George secretly studied the ailen technology. Learning about PSI. After george escaped, Giygas swore revenge and started conquering multiple planets. Eventually he got so powerful that his body literally couldn’t hold it all and he became the embodiment of pure evil, Unable to think rationally anymore.
Earthbound seems to be a game that's really a reflection of the youths of the programmers who pieced it together, along with their fears and memories. This in turn is a shared memory in their own way for the others who have played it by making them reflect on their own lives now that they are older.
Earthbound is a combination of all of those dreams we had where random shit happens and often don't make sense that is somehow we barely remember parts of.

Graphically the game looks great. It holds up beautifully after 28 years. One of the best games on the SNES.
You can really see how similar is to Pokemon, as the development team I'm pretty sure is closely affiliated.

TBH, the Giygas as a metaphor of losing innocence makes sense behind Earthbounds Giygas.
I agree. As someone who played Earthbound when I was 8, I didn’t understand it but as a 16 year old, I now understand that Earthbound is about growing up and childhood in general
It should be noted that Giygas's "demonic appearance," when turned upside down, looks suspiciously similar to Giegue, from EarthBound Zero (aka EarthBound beginnings, and Mother 1), which leads many to suspect both of them to be the same being.
Edit: this line of thinking, as I have learned, is canonically accurate, as Mother 2's subtitle is "Giegue Strikes Back!"

The final boss of both Mother 1 and 2 is called the same in the Japanese originals: ギーグ (GiiGu), so it's just due to ambiguous translation that the names are different in the English versions.

My cousin Jonathan passed away a little over a year ago, and one of my great gaming memories is playing Earthbound with him. Earthbound and FFXI were 2 games that I really only could share with him IRL.

James, there is a reason why the Photo Guy appears.... He's actually a time traveller that was hired by Ness as a grown up to record his adventure because Ness forgot to do it himself and was forgetting details. Problem is that the game itself doesn't actually say it.

I love this game. It's consistently weird and fun. I even love how they made it a challenge to teleport. Somehow it got my full attention with all the choices on the Mini SNES.
I watched this when it came out, but I finally had a chance to play Earthbound on Switch so I had to come back and watch it again. What a weird yet charming game

I just finished the game last night. This was possibly one of the greatest video game experiences I have ever had, and I'm in my 30's. I cried, laughed, and found myself transformed; it's a masterpiece.

There are some really sincere moments of earnestness and heart in the game that I could see moving someone to tears, but not like in a sad way. By the end of it, you really feel like you’ve been on a personal journey, and the game itself just showers you with love and encouragement in a way I’ve never seen before. It’s a pretty special game, honestly.

All those little nuances are what make the game so charming to me. It was my favorite game growing up and still my favorite game to this day. I've played it all the way through at least 25 times.
Fun fact: the running teleport responds to controller input. This can be done to pull it off on an elbowed path, or to perform it diagonally.

The abortion theory is half true. You're not going inside Ness's mother to abort the baby. You're going inside her in the past to rid Giygas's evil inside the fetus of Ness.
I remember buying Earthbound while it was on sale at my local Kmart. I bought it because I was looking for another RPG for my Super Nintendo after finishing Ogre Battle and Chrono Trigger. Amazing game with a beautiful soundtrack. I dare say it’s the best Super Nintendo game in my opinion right next to Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid.
In that case, you might really like Mother 3 considering all of the flaws you pointed out in this video are basically non-existent in that game. On top of that, Mother 3 has a phenomenal story and more emphasis on character development. If EarthBound freaked you out or weirded you out, then Mother 3 will make you cry. EarthBound is all about fighting against the things that are preventing you from moving forward, and Mother 3 is about letting go of all the things tying you back.

My favorite episodes are when he reviews well-known and beloved games such as Earthbound and give it the "tough love" treatment. He really likes the fun and gives them a very detailed look but he will significantly highlight the overlooked or apparent flaws with the game. I would to see more formats like this in the future.
Ive been watching you since i was a kid in 2007 and I think this is your magnum opus. Its not an angry review but its such a great love letter to earthbound and makes me want to play it again. Few reviews, positive or negative, actively make me want to pick a game up. Thanks for making it, and im sure im going to come back and watch it again for many years to come.
I love this game because it taught me back then about how to spend your money appropriately. I lost 20k on Summers hospital only to realize that its only $50 to revive your friends on Onett and teleportation only costs 2PP and a bit of my patience. Truly a life changing experience. It still hurts but it does drill in the point.
There was one of the later levels that had an area in the corner on the map but I never found out how to get there.
Couldn't you revive them with healing at thar point? Maybe it was later on in the game but it definitely was the best option.

I rented this game back in the day on a whim from the box art and became hooked. Never beat it m, but was always drawn to how deep it was. It used to annoy me that you would get hot in the desert and could die just walking around, but also a cool mechanic I never experienced before as a kid. Love this game.

Earthbound is easily one of the best games that I have ever played from start to finish. It took me about 50 hours to complete because I did a lot of level grinding. And I didn't get the "Sword of Kings."
Six months and six hours later I got the sword.
One of the best games on SNES and one of the best games ever in general. I actually liked the marketing of this game.
I remember seeing the scratch and sniff advertisements in my EGM magazines and wanting this game lol. It was also the only game I can remember that actually gave you the entire strategy book with the game.
And most fans say James Rolfe doesn't work as hard because his AVGN videos don't come out as much as they used to ? Just read the information in the description box under the video, the fact that he spent the last 6 months making this whole thing that you're seeing right now, speaks for itself.

Agree, it's a good one, and while watching it I thought he played this game a lot since he can say a lot about the game and pointed them out in the vid, but turns out he never plays the game before, that shows the many hours spent on it
The Polybius video also counted as being a great one that took a while too.
All those dad interruptions were to keep those Japanese kids from playing for 30 hours straight and dying of dehydration. Like they are wont to do.
And the 3 min waterfall thing was pretty much the game saying "hey dummy, ya gotta learn to stop and enjoy the scenery!"

I believe I know the main message of Earthbound, that being, patience.
In the final area, you can stay alive by having Poo "mirror" the atomic bot. Defend with all people except Poo, and he'll regularly replenish HP to max for all your characters.

cool man this was awesome! never watched a video game review before but the way you kinda went from goofy to being more serious at the end to really drive home the depth of the game was cool
This is currently my favorite AVGN. Honestly if Rolfe had ended everything here, I think it would had concluded perfectly. This is just such a large overarching story that I think humbled the character that allowed him to fight one of the greatest incarnations of evil that threatens reality. Some moments genuinely gave me chills.

Been playing Earthbound since it came out in the 90s, it's always been my favorite rpg. As a teenager back then, the ending blew my mind.

This being in the top list of popular AVGN episodes proves that we come here for James just as much as we come here for the angry nerd.
After you beat Giygas it's cool to travel the world and see what's up and I found it very humbling and surreal to drop off Paula back at her house before going home yourself. At the very least re-explore Onett, as you can run into certain NPC's like Frank who is now working at the pizza place. You came a long way on your journey and it's a unique experience for an RPG to be able to see the good that you've accomplished abolishing evil, and even continue doing things like buying that house on the cliff you couldn't afford at the beginning if you never went back for it.
It gets me in my feels and I've replayed it a few times as i've gotten older and the appreciation ONLY grows. it isn't perfect, but it is a masterpiece to me and many others. In many ways decades ahead of its time (enemies flee from you as you over take them in power, something many rpgs i WISH would copy).

Replaying the game as an adult, I realized the dad phone calls in EarthBound are just like the dad phone calls in real life. He knows you're calling because you just need one minor thing, but you still need to visit on the phone for a minute to let him know you're doing alright.

The music throughout this game was always one of the best on the system. They covered such a crazy amount of genres and it was all over the place yet still fit right into the world seamlessly

The two composers pushed the SNES's sound hardware. One of them was Hip Tanaka famous for working on Donkey Kong Arcade sound effects, Mario Bros. Arcade, Dr. Mario, Wrecking Crew, Gameboy Camera and Tetris GB. He was the one to contribute to the arrangement of Korbineki aka Type A BGM. The other composer Keiichi Suzuki worked on Mother and this game only.

I really like this episode because it goes less on the angry and talks about a good game in an interesting way. It shows the avgn character can have more depth than just anger

I got this game at Walmart cause it looked pretty cool and it came with a player guide. I loved it, didn't know it was gonna be soo huge.
6:09 i have played earthbound countless times, and even though at this point im starting to remember which npc says which dialogue and stuff like that, i like to talk to every npc i see because of this, i never get tired if Earthbound's dialogue

I always keep finding myself coming back to my video. It’s probably my favourite, above Hong Kong 97 and Big Rigs.
Is it just me or is AVGN going through some sort of renaissance, keeping the original flavor of the nerd but adding to it in so many ways and a massive increase of quality
