When I cleared my land 40 years ago the land was covered with 2' diameter black oak trees. I decided that it would take too long with a Ford Tractor with a bucket loader. I got a big. shovel dozer I pushed down the trees and the stumps would pop up in just a few minutes per tree. I had a lot of boulders that it moved easily. Get the right size tool for your project. Take advantage of passive solar. Good Luck, Rick

I was lucky there was mostly small pines and brush in this aria and no large stumps to remove. Thanks for the advise I do plan on using solar in the A-frame.

@@TheBeardedHermit47 Solar works well when combined with super-insulation. 25 years ago my passive solar/super insulated house used very little wood. Now with most days suffering from high altitude air pollution I have to burn more wood. BTW, My passive solar also makes the south side rooms into a greenhouse for the winter. Take as many trees as you need to. Birch trees do poorly in ice storms(they bend and break). Be careful. Good Luck with your project, Rick

@@richardross7219 Thanks for all the good advise, I have about 90% of what I want laid out in my head for my house but I am still making changes when I see or hear good ideas.

@@TheBeardedHermit47 If you can find them, read the old "MotherEarthNews Magazines" from the 1970s. I learned a lot from them. My passive solar didn't cost any extra. It was built into the design of my house. Extra glass to the south and less glass to the north. Remember, Low E is NOT your friend on south facing glass.
I'm a retired Civil Engineer and I spent a lot of time designing my house. There is a big woodstove in the basement. Heat rises so it heats the entire house(but slowly). I have a small Jotul 603 in my living room for a little heat and to cook if necessary(we lose power a lot). One thing to consider is that it is easier to build bigger now than to add on later. I want to see you succeed. Good Luck, Rick
