Hello all, I started this channel to document my time in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I moved here in March to take care of my elderly parents, but also to get away from the ''Big City'' and try my hands at living ''Off Grid''. I quit my job in the Chicago area, sold my house, and plan on building a house here in the woods of the UP. I have started by tearing down and building a greenhouse, growing a vegetable garden has been my hobby for years, but it is also very important to me to be food self-sufficient. After this project I will start building my dream house, an A-frame in the woods.

Slow Progress in a Rainy Hot Week @TheBeardedHermit47 Hello everyone, in this week's videos the rain has slowed me down but I still get a few things done, I do a little more digging, load building material in my trailer to drive to the house site, and set my first 14-foot post in the hole to start the root cellar / storm shelter. What about drainage? How will you keep the cellar dry? Just curious
I am not so worried about drainage, the sub floor will go right over top of the root cellar, with a trap door opening up into the kitchen floor. I will back fill those piles of dirt over top of the root cellar in the crawl space so the dirt will be higher than the ground around the A-frame. And lastly the ground in this part of the country is very sandy so rain water drains into the ground very fast. It has rained many times since I have dug this hole and there has never been standing water down there.

Did you figure out what the frost depth is yet? Just curious, everything will stay nice and cool in there.
In a cold winter the frost should not get deeper than 4 feet.

Thanks I have seen many People Building A-frames and like you say they go overboard.... this house should be the perfect size for 1 person, about 624 sq ft when finished.

@@Reina.Hezir.Haddad Honestly up here in the UP of Michigan it really depends on the county, try and avoid a county with a ''big city'' , many rural county's up here do not care much when you build something small, especially when you do it yourself.

Do you own both sides of it? There appears to be a nice pool at the bottom of the screen. Many years ago, when I was a town engineer building bridges, I would put a string of boulders across the stream about 60' downstream of the new bridge. This created nice pools. Fishing off of the bridges was excellent. Good Luck, Rick
This bridge goes over a local stream about 4 miles from my place, but it is on a public road and many people go trout fishing here.
It might not be I think it’s a young hawthorn plant with its first fruits.
You might want to talk with the local state college to have them test your soil and water too to make sure you don’t have Pfos or pfas and also heavy metals and disease in the soil but with you saying you like gardening you may know this already. If there is heavy metals in the soil grow sunflowers and burn them after not sure how to dispose of the ashes tho. Otherwise the plants will put those metals back in the soil. (It also treats asbestos in the soil for anyone who wants to get rid of that too)
I have been coming here for over 35 years with my family, we have driven 4 shallow wells and had the water tested more times than I can count. No heavy metals or harmful bacteria has ever been found, no calcium in the water either. The only thing in the water is iron, it makes the water smell a little but is safe to drink. As for the soil there is no industry or mining near this area, and never heard anyone say the soil was contaminated.
They may have grown into wild ones. And it of those flowers are edible and useful for herbal remedies
The farmer who normally would plant potatoes in this field stopped farming about 4 or 5 years ago.... and the field went into all these flowers.

If you go to your state website look at the massasauga rattlesnake. If it is it’s a protected species and it will prevent mice and other pesky rodents that destroy property. (Not that I honestly hate rodents they have a purpose afterall. Unlike mosquitos!)
I have looked on the internet for Michigan snakes and have narrowed it down to a Western or Eastern Fox Snake. And have you never heard of the tale.... if all the mosquitos die then the food chain will collapse? hahaha not sure if I believe that or not.

Yup very easy digging, I know many parts of the country have wicked ground to dig.
You should look for hemlock to build the house it’ll survive all 4 seasons well.
There is only a few Hemlocks on the property here, not enough to build a house or cabin.

I had priced things out about 3 months ago and I ended up saving about 5% so yeah a little lower.... and the lumber yard had a sale so I saved a little more, but it most certainly was not free haha.
Nice video. Your floor plan is lacking a place for stairs to the bedroom. Locating stairs in an "A" frame is a real pain. No matter where you put them, they take up an inordinate amount of space. If there is no building code, you might want a "ships ladder" type stairs(very steep). Consider putting a closet under the stairs. Good Luck, Rick
Yeah this was my plan, to make the stairs more like a ladder and just move it out of the way when not in use, but yeah finding a place for stairs is a problem. I considered a spiral staircase but not even enough room for that.

@@richardross7219 That is a good idea, I have seen this in another video, if it will work out this way I will do it, but I am still not 100% sure about the locations of everything in the A-frame yet.

Weird pattern. Seen plenty of rattlers, copperheads, king snakes, and black racers but, I don't recall ever seeing one like that. Thanks for showing it. Good Luck, Rick

Thanks Rick, I am trying to do things the best way I know how and I do really appreciate any suggestions people have.
What type of wall & floor are you planning?
6x6 posts in the corners every 4 feet and 2x6 planks on all 4 sides and roof, with 1 inch foamboard on the outside to insulate and moisture barrier. I will just keep the sand floor.

@@rmmichels the ground here is very sandy with very little clay, I had built a water pump shed the same way and no water problems for over 20 years.
