Removing a Dangerous Spruce Tree by the Cabin and Greenhouse

- I take down a dying spruce before it falls on the cabin or the greenhouse and use it to provide lumber for the root cellar stairs, kindling for the wood stove and biochar for the garden.

I love watch tree get cut down. Thanks. I had a tree like that. I was trying to calm down my dogs during a thunder storm an lightning struck it. I jumped the dogs freaked out. It was like the sun landed in my kitchen an dinning room. I'm glad I wasn't on the porch watching the storm because the bark flew all over the back yard across the driveway and into the porch. My cars were covered with it. I still watch storms from there but get nervous an go in the house when the strikes are overhead. Goin to a convoy rally tonight in Indiana. FREEDOM YEAHHHH
When all around us is breaking up some how watching you brings peace to the mind body and sole 🙏🏻✌🏻👌🏻

For the past number of years, there have been many spruce and fir trees dying because of the pine beetle in the area around where we vacation. I hope your area is spared from those destructive insects!

@@44daggers44 Thanks daggers. Yes we're fine, very fortunate to live on a hill. Some of my work colleagues have been though a really rough time though. It was the most insane rain I've experienced. Our rain gauge captured almost 950 points in 4 days ... I say almost because Sunday morning when I checked it, it was overflowing so no idea how much we missed reading then! Cheers.

Yes what an insane amount of rain !!! Nth. Ipswich here ... had to send a grson into the ceiling with a wok, a roasting dish and a long flat container I threw the rolls of Christmas paper out of as it was the only thing long and shallow enough to fit far enough under the end slope of the roof. Been here for 16yrs and first leak we've had in the roof and ceiling. More rain on its way too. Could do with some of that nice cold snow right now.

My name is Dan Ray. I have really enjoyed washing you bield your log cabins. Back in 1984 my family bought a log cabin in the Mountains of New Mexico. The Santa de Criso mountain in Colfax County. This cabin goes back to the 1800s. There is a lot of small log cabin in the area. This cabin was part of the Maxwell Land that involved thousands of thousands of acres of land. I want go into to mush detail but just a little bit. Maxwell marred a Indian that how he got a hold of this land. When it first come out of the Maxwell Land Grant about 1900 a lady got about a1000 acres it. She a widow she owned several saw mills. In 1938 the cabin we had was built on too to be 1800 sp.ft. It's been a Dude Ranch, a Bardo lots of times maybe a Bar also. We sold it in 1996 and people have raised 2 or 3 families in it. That party good for almost around 200 years. At time it's for sale again. It's listed with I believe with Lary Weeks of Lindsey Realtor in Angel Fire New Mexico and it's on their website if your interested in seeing it. They two bedrooms on to it since we had it. Made it 2000 sp. Ft. 4 bedroom 2 bathroom big kitchen. I miss having a 🐕 around. All the whole place has been rescuing. I like your way of doing things . I bought me a place not to for away your in a better shape than I am. Keep your power dry.

I've taken down enough culled spruce like that, and it looks similar, chunk off the bad butt end and you get a couple top logs. The cut we saw looked good.

They say even an empty chair has it's value. The same goes for dead/dying trees. Waste not, want not.
@5:47 if you put a wedge in the top of that cut , the log would not fall down and pinch the saw !

What about protective gear? Even if you are an experienced feller, chainsawing is very risky. Helmet, slit pants, goggles, etc. Highly recommended.

The scar looks like a lightning strike. The scar appears a few years after the strike and usually runs the full height of the tree.
How far up did the scar go?
I bet that spruce was struck by lightning back in its day. That long spiralling scar suggests such a thing, I've seen many a tree with this similar scar. Nice job Shawn!
