    A lot of you seem to be missing a point of this video- the message of this video is that it doesn’t matter what you have- be it a strobe or an expensive light- you can use whatever you have to create and you shouldn’t let your equipment limit you. Not everyone is lucky enough to have amazing gear and I want them to know there is always a way. That’s it.

      Why is the 100mm macro the "best lens" for beauty work?

    • @llg4958
      @llg4958 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@canonball1914 Most photographers use a either a 90, 100, 150, or 180 macro for beauty work. The *point* is detail.

    • @llg4958
      @llg4958 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@canonball1914 You changed words which are very important in this discussion: we were both initially discussing "beauty work", which I believe we'll both agree is different from the category called portraiture.
      But as far as portraiture goes, Peter Hurley, one of the world's best known portrait photographers, shot his work primarily on a medium format Hasselblad digital camera and a 120mm macro lens. Take a look at the majority of Martin Schoeller's work.
      Yes, many photographers do not use a macro for portraiture, but there are many great photographers that do, and many more that use a macro lens for beauty.
      Macro lenses allow you to focus closer, are usually made in a 'portrait' focal length, and have typically lower distortion than other lenses.
      Now, if your subject doesn't have great skin, a macro lens wouldn't be ideal, but when you are shooting beauty work, you'd typically seek out a model with great skin.

    I really don’t understand everyone in the comments lol. I love this video. I’m a beginner in photography and this video helped me a lot. If all you have a ring light, use a ring light! This video is supposed to show that you can work with what you have even if it’s a cheaper set up

    I used a 3 ring light setup and it worked out amazingly, the client was happy and the effects were spot on. All light sources can provide the results you need, cost play little part in that. The ring lights can do all you need in certain scenarios and for lower costs sure but there are times when only a strobe will do. They both have their places. A few ring lights can work magic for only a couple hundred dollars. Best to have both on-hand!

    Thanks for uploading this; I'm learning a lot from your videos. In macro context, I gotta go with the strobe. But looking at 1:46 I'm going to go with the ring light--great image at 5% of the cost

    Take $40 flash and $10 umbrella, price difference will be twice as high, and nobody will tell the difference between results from these setups without pixel-peeping.
    Now you are comparing oranges to apples...

    IMHO it doesn't look like you got the colour temperature correct for the ring light, as it still looks far cooler than the Profoto, which is quite warm. Looking at the direct comparison at 2:50 shows this perfectly. I'm sure that the comparison could have been much better if you'd checked the colour temperature and accuracy using something like a ColorChecker Passport. Each time I shoot fashion or models in the studio, I calibrate with one of these and it assures that I accurately record the colours of clothes, etc. which are often being shot for online shops. Therefore it minimises customer returns on the basis of the colour not being the same as the photo.

    • @llg4958

      It is always best to get the kelvin right in camera(like everything else,) but if you are shooting RAW, then you can adjust it when editing.

  • @jamilgotcher5456

    I prefer the profoto image but I feel like if the photographer has good editing skills you could make the ring light look as warm and soft as the profoto image. The ring light looks much contrastier for some reason.I've shot with both too but don't remember my ring light shots looking so contrasty. Although I did a paid model test and she loved the ones with the ring light for her headshot. She was in her mid thirties and the ring light seamed like it did a fill thing that was flattering to an older model.

    Honestly , next time try to compare Godox vs Profoto ,both on beautydish or both on umbrella, then you will get the point of what is the difference ,from working in the studio i can tell you that there is no difference in a quality of light, the only difference between expensive and cheap is mainly power , build , speed, and consistency. And im not missing the point you are trying to tell in the coment i agree you can get exactly the same result with even 50$ strobe but there is some cases when you may need consistency or speed.

      You mean "angled light with more 3D" (a.k.a umbrella) wins against a flat, shadowless shiny light (ringlight)? Yes. But it's not Profoto, it's a different lighting technique that you could do with a 50$ speedlight and have the same result.....

      You're right - it's not about the light source itself but about the modifier used.

      I get what you intend to say but anyway I think comparing a huge umbrella and a ringlight doesn´t make too much sense except you really want to show the differences between the the two in terms of how they work. If you intend to show people that price doesn´t really matter in many cases you should show them e.g. a 2000 $ softbox setup against a 200 $ setup. But of course that´s only my humble opinion ;-)

      @@Mysticgemineye We are debating light attributes. If henkkaa88 had said use a large silver umbrella from Godox/Westcott/Elinchrom etc., I wouldn't have said a thing because henkkaa88 would likely have been correct. For example, It would be ridiculous on its face to say "I used a 7' deep silver para for this photo, but I can get the same with a 1'x3' stripbox. Compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. If you are going to chose 2 different tools, as was done in this video, even if it was two Profoto items, It is two different qualities of light, and therefore you will end up with two different images. Period.
      "There arent any other qualities than soft and hard and everything in between."
      Even if you were to use two Profoto umbrellas of the same size at the same distance and angle, and the lights at the same power, the results would look different if one was silver and the other was white. If someone doesn't have the money to buy Profoto/Broncolor/Elinchrom etc., they should just say so, or just go about their way like everyone else and learn about photography from these videos and by going out and shooting.
