    This maybe of interest to a few. I am a senior and retired glass artist ( moved out of my home where my studio was) and living on a limited pension. I have purchased second hand paintings for very little and used what’s on them as part of my under painting. I’m working on a 4’ x5’ acrylic painting I bought for $5. Not archival but it allows me to play.😁😁😁😁

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's fantastic! Really, why not? And, if you use clear gesso, then you now have a pretty archival surface to work on AND you get to see the underpainting :) Thank you for sharing this - great idea! :)

    It's lovely to see how you use white. I experience it as cooling down the noise, hiding pieces of color. But to me they are also forms, almost sculptures in itself. They bring balance, they make the background push back and they add depth by being in the foreground. And then there are the different transparent or opaque parts. I learn from you, to take my own efforts using white/light paint more seriously and use it more consciencely.

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I think that is key - using it with thought and intention. I use a lot of white, and variations of white as there is a rather infinite range of whites ;)

I can't get effects like that when I sand and I use a electric sander. I find that not much come off. My paint is very dry so I wondered if that made a difference ? I can't believe you got such great effects with just a sanding block. So amazing. Thanks.

    Hi Pam: I have been watching this painting with interest. I am wondering at what point you decide on a colour/temperature dominance?

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question, Sharon :) I think the temperature can go from warm to cool to warm to cool frequently - that is part of the fun of creating complex color - but yes, at some point, and usually toward the end, I will make the changes needed to hopefully ensure the color dominance ;)

    If the underpainting is house paint, how does that hold up over time? Does it ever cause yellowing later? I do love your process and thank you so much for the videos!

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I knew the housepaint in this case would be a first layer, and it was put over gessoed panels, which are highly absorbant. There have been so many additional layers with professional paints that there is not that much of the housepaint showing in the end, but where it is, I think it will be stable and all artwork should really not be hung in direct sunlight :)

I have one question for you: I have watched all these videos, but I didn't get what kind of material you used to get the very transparent veil like effect with tiny random square shapes in it. • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! Because I'm in several galleries, it is important to be consistent. Working with the galleries, we came up with a multiplier of 2.25 and this is for my acrylic and cwm/oil work. Encaustics and encaustic monotype vary slightly. So, for a 4x6' piece, that's 48 x 72 x 2.25 = $7776. Galleries typically take 50%, and I pay for shipping to a gallery, and they pay for shipping back. :)

I am not sure how thick a Baltic birch plywood would need to be for 48 x 48. Also there are some “technical panels” that are light and made of thin alumimium sandwiched round a synthetic foam... I forget the name for now. How big do you think I could go just with hardboard on a frame?
