IN THIS VIDEO: An exploration in SHAPE making using Gamblin Colors Fastmatte Alkyd Oil paints. This is the first time I've had a chance to use them and I've doing two demos of paintings exploring shapes and technique on Multimedia Artboard.

I just loved watching you work small-scale again. Really inspiring! And gorgeous work. In Europe it is very difficult to get hold of Gamblin paints, but I think Winsor & Newton also do a fast-drying range of oil paints - called "GRIFFIN Alkyd". Curious to try them out now!
Hi Rob-yes I bet the WN Griffin paint would act much the same-no need to add cwm to them -and easy to dilute with the 1:1 gamsol:Galkyd 😊

My take away from this is Fastmatte oils would be great for play and explore, but can they stand on their own without the CWM?

Hey everyone! If you would like to try the Gamblin Fastmatte Alkyd oil paints - you don't need to mix them with cold wax, but they make a great underpainting which you can paint with cwm/oils over the top. You can also just use the fastmatte paints by themselves for a whole painting; no solvents are needed, but you can thin them out with a 1:1 solution of Gamblin Gamsol:Galkyd. Can add galkyd gamsol so more fluid, pencil an eye or charcoal what's around the big shapes, washy pour of galkyd gams
Multimedia art board so don't disturb day old start,tilt n turn, tissue f blot &again , lift again w p towels, brush shape!im now taking notes w/ th video!§€£¥ r nice shapes, another keyboard!,great ideas!now time to start another CW&oil ptng! Hi Beth - basically, mix 1 part Gamblin's Gamsol to 1 part Gamblin's Galkyd and presto - you have this great mix! :)
@@PamelaCaughey Hi Pamela, does this mixture with the paint yield the transparent yellow that you rolled over the red letter stencil?
Also, are there other large sticks of color that have zero solvents?
Have I missed where you talk glazes? Something you make or buy?
Will your technique work on canvas?

One other question.. on the second piece when you used your brush at the top of the piece did you use Gamsol for that application?

Love your videos, Pam! I'm still a beginner and appreciate all the tips you provide. May I ask what kind of tape you used on the edges of this painting? It came off so easily without damaging the paper.
Yes I use white artist tape -if you use a hairdryer over any tape it will release very easily 🌺🌺

Hi Karin - these are Gamblin Fastmatte oils so I just used the oil paints - no cwm - the only time I added the galkyd/gamsol was for the purple shape done with a brush! :)
What is the best substitute for fastmatte oils if you do not have them? They look a bit more fluid than regular oil paints? Love this video, again tons of info and ideas, Thank You.
Hi Darcy- actually, these oils are quite a bit thicker/stiffer than traditional oil paints. They are possibly most like Winsor and Newton Griffin Alkyd though I have not tried that brand; I just know they produce an alkyd line of paints. Really, there is nothing quite like these and you could do a whole painting in this medium without any cold wax. I intend to use them a lot more after this small test ;)!
@@PamelaCaughey I will have to look out for them....more things to try. I wanted to thank you for your video on packing our supplies, it is so hard to get CWM supplies here in Hawaii....we have only one store on the Big Island that sells Gamblin CWM and Dorlands. They only order a few cans, so I have learned to make my own. I used your video for that too. So, you have really shared some great info. Looking forward to keeping up with your work and videos in the future...looks like 2020 is going to be a busy year for you. Thanks again....
I use W&N Artisan water mixable but they still take to long to dry to suit me. These Fastmatte oils look great and really set up quickly. Do they have a strong smell?

Thank you Pamela! I wonder, when you add forms to your composition, do you have some principles that guide you? I know some colorprinciples like complimentary colors. But when you're not playing, what are the designprinciples you are using? I can't imagine it is all intuitive.
Hi Grady-I am guided by the principles of powerful design which is what I teach in my online course 😉

How long will it take for the poured paint to dry and make the surface dry enough to work into it?
Hi Lynn, it was definitely dry the next day :) These are Gamblin Fastmatte oils - so they dry faster than traditional oils. These are the ones I use: amzn.to/32v7cZJ
What kind of papers do you use for the monoprints? the sound got cut off there

Hi Pam, Watched your Webinarjam on your website. I did not realize that I could take your course at my leisure. If that is the case, it should be a good fit for me. At 77 years of age, this tech stuff is way beyond me. I do not know how to contact you, other than to write in the open over one of your TH-cam videos. So here I am writing. PLEASE be more specific about the media you use. You are for instance mixing oil paint for the "pour" with WHAT, gamsol?
