    Nice that you walk the viewer through the technique. Very bold to cover your colors with gesso. I've seen this before, but always have such a challenge to try this out as I've wanted to in the past. I think I've only done this once since sometimes you can lose a perfect early version of a painting with a later, convoluted version of the same painting. Thanks for sharing!

    • @PamelaCaughey

      Hi Shawn! Thanks for your comment here! I wanted to clarify that I use clear gesso, so you can still see all the colors beneath (as opposed to opaque, white gesso!). I like the clear gesso because it makes the surface very absorbant and ready to take on the cold wax/oil layers! Best to you and your painting! Pam :)

    I always learn so much from your videos Pam and feel inspired for my own growth as an artist. Using acrylic in the beginning of a large painting makes so much sense plus saves on oil paint-

      I agree, Terri - it is a little faster considering the drying time of acrylics, and fun to lay down lots of color quickly. I'm so glad you are finding inspiration from these videos; we as artists can pull from so many wonderful resources. Wishing you all the best! Pam ;)

      Glazing can be achieved by adding paint, sanding, or with mixed media (dry media - watercolor pencils, pastels, etc) - anything that allows you to see what is below with varying degrees of transparency. I love glazes, too ;)

    Each time you add another layer I’m worried because I loved what went beforehand! Now I’m in love with these giant ghost shapes and feel like it’s finished again. I’m sure it will be beautiful with whatever you do but how do you handle hiding all these beautiful early moments/imagesetters? It great you’ll have the video but wow, this takes courage and my frugal nature screams, a lot of paint! You are an outstanding teacher

    • @PamelaCaughey

      Victoria, it has taken me a long time (life time?) to get to the point where I am beginning to understand the less is more" concept. I am finding by removing and editing down to the bare bones, I am ending up with something more satisfactory than what I started with. This is the stage I am in now, because it feels like I am doing something different, but all things change and who knows what I will be doing next! Thanks for your comment - I appreciate your thoughts and honesty ;) As for the paint, I too appreciate that it appears a lot of paint is being put on for no reason. However, it is like gas in a car. The paint, all of it, fuels the journey, the most important part to me. Wherever I end up, I will have needed every bit of that gas (paint) I used to have gotten there. Cheers--Pam

    Hi Pamela... thanks for a great series! Here you talk about using "Clear Gesso"... my q is whether clear ACRYLIC MEDIUM works the same (Liquitex Matt Medium for instance) for sealing? Thanks again!!

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Jim - that is a great question! I use Clear Gesso made by Liquitex; I am not aware of any other brands. There is a pretty big difference between clear acrylic mediums (ie polymer gloss, matte, gels, etc) vs the Clear gesso - and that is, the clear gesso is very absorbant and the other clear mediums are not. The Clear Gesso actually feels like sandpaper! Best wishes, Pam ;)

    Hey Pam! I LOVE your videos! You are amazing! The fact that you share your process is priceless to me. I’ve been experimenting with cw&oil for about a year...I love it! I have one question right now - how to display cw&oil on paper? I’ve put it under glass, expensive, and mounted to different kinds of boards...but do we need to glaze the piece with something to keep it safe from the elements or just let it be... what are your thoughts? Can’t wait to see your next video...and thank you for everything you do! Janet

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Janet! Thanks so much for stopping by my channel and your comments. That is a great question and perhaps a topic for another video for sure. It isn't complicated, really - I use Lineco pH neutral adhesive when adhering cold wax oil paintings to baltic birch panels. There is a bit of an "art" to it, however, especially when your work gets large! Once the work is adhered to panel, let it dry thoroughly and finish with about 3-4 thin coats of just cold wax medium (let dry in between each layer). This final coat of cold wax medium is preferred over any varnish out there and this information was provided by Gamblin Colors, who I rely on heavily for all technical information! Best wishes to you and your art! Pam :)

    • @jmcgregor80
      @jmcgregor80 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Pam for explaining the process with paper. When you use cold wax and oil on panels… does that mean you gesso a panel (what material is the panel?) and paint on it then add several layers of wax to finish - how do you display and hang these panels? Do you just hang them on the wall as is… no frame, etc. I'm sorry to keep asking these questions. I can't wait to be able to take a class in IL or Wi or better yet online would be great! Janet

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Janet - I use Baltic Birch panels that are gessoed (usually white gesso, but you can color the gesso if you like). When finished, yes, I like to coat the dried surface with about 3 individually applied coats of plain Cold Wax Medium - let each dry in between, thoroughly. This is preferred versus using any kind of final varnish product, according to the folks at Gamblin products! As far as displaying, I usually do not frame the cradled panels; they just hang on the wall. If they are smallish, say 24x24in or smaller, you may choose to use a frame, but it is a personal choice! I hope this helps - Pam ;)

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I know from experience it is best to put the clear gesso over the acrylic before switching to cwm/oil - this is because the acrylic surface is plastic and nonabsorbant. It is a precaution and I think it's worth it to make sure the layers adhere well! :)

Looking forward to the application of wax and oil. What was the instrument or painting tool you used in the beginning for some geometric shapes. I shall watch this again but look forward to the next one.

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Crissea - thanks for your comment. I love the analogy of a "birthing" process; yes, it is! Hmm, as far as geometric shapes, I think you may be referring to a very simple painting tool, found at ACE hardware (or any hardware store). It is just a piece of metal with a plastic holder. You can go to any hardware store and ask for a painter's trim guide - they come in a few different lengths :) Wishing you the best - Pam

    Hello Pam I am a fifty-five Spanish follower of yours. I confess that I really delighted with your style and technique as well, that is why I put hands at work. First I painted a canvas using acrilyc and afterwards with cold wax, it is now 4 days ago. I forgot to smear clear gesso onto the canvas. Could it be possible that the cold wax does not dry due to that fact? In addition if I try mark making with a 2 pencil I remove the paint, that is , it does not rest any mark of graphite on the canvas. Thank you very much for your videos. I wish I could attend to any of your workshops but I am really far from youI!

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi M. Pilar, I'm glad to see you experimenting and how nice to hear you have been inspired by the videos. Now, though it is fine to work with acrylic on stretched canvas, if you begin to transition over to cold wax, you would want to adhere the canvas to a rigid surface such as a wooden panel. However, it should be ok as long as you keep the ratio of cold wax to Oil paint about 1:4 (so, just 25% wax to oil paint) while painting on canvas. If you increase the ratio of cold wax oils, you will risk cracking the oil paint layer if the canvas flexes too much.
      Regarding your forgetting to put the clear gesso over the acrylic before applying the cold wax/oils, it will take a little longer to dry (clear gesso is highly absorbant and helps the oil layer dry faster) - it sounds like the oil layer is so wet that your markmaking is removing the paint. Just wait a little longer for the paint to dry, and you should be fine. You may have a slightly less stable adhesion between the cold wax/oil layer and acrylics because you didn't use the clear gesso in between,, but everything you do is a lesson, something to learn by. Just remember next time; we learn more from the mistakes we make than from our successes!
      I will be teaching a cold wax painting course in Rome, Italy from Sept 6-12, 2018 (a little closer to
      Spain!). Here is the link for more info: www.galleriaaurea.com/pamela-caughey Cheers, Pam ;)

    • @m.pilarromeo9877
      @m.pilarromeo9877 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much Pam, your explanation has been really edifying, because I applied a high ratio of cold wax, consequently I have to wait more time so that I could continue with my composition and try more markmaking, which, by the way, it is not that simple and at the same time really playful. Have you ever thought that you may edit a book plenty of your marks? Sleep on it.
      And, of course, Pam I have learned many many things from my mistakes, sometimes it means a leap, a breakthrough. I devote much of my lifetime to cultivate the pressed flowers technique and honestly I know what you mean.
      As regards my compositions, sometimes I mix them with a first layer of watercolor. My pourpose, now, is to learn from your technique as much as possible and to introduce and blend it with the pressed flowers one. So, hands at desk!

    I live in Norway and I can not buy cold wax medium here. I have tried ordering it through my art equipment store, but they can't import it into Norway. I would usually have taken a trip to Holland or England , But with the corona virus I am afraid that is out of the question this year.

      Yes, I have heard how difficult it is to acquire cold wax, but working in acrylic I hope will work for you until you can try the cold wax with oil - each medium has their pros and cons but it is fun to explore for sure! :)

    I’m a bit confused. 1. What did you mix with the gray acrylic paint?
    2. I “thought” you couldn’t apply acrylic paints over cold wax unless you first applied clear gesso?
    (Please know I’m not questioning your techniques-just trying to learn - I have hardly any experience with cold wax painting!)

      Rita- be sure to watch the videos in order, starting with Video 30. The acrylic is never put on top of the cold wax, but rather, it is applied after the acrylic paint has dried, and clear gesso is applied on top to prepare the surface for the cold wax. I didn't use gray acrylic paint, but mixed the colors to make the grays :)

    I cannot wait to see the finished pieces. One thing I just have to say....My eye is SO drawn to the "F". Is there some significance there?

    When your CWM layer is finished, how long do you wait to apply the clear CWM as a finishing layer? Then, do you buff the clear CWM immediately, or do you let it dry before buffing? Thank you so much, you are such a great teacher.

      @PamelaCaughey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paulette! Thanks for your comment and question. Since different environments can impact drying time, the way to determine if your surface layer is dry enough for the final coat (or coats) of CWM is by simply pressing your fingernail into an area of thick paint. If it is set up and dry, your fingernail won't make much of a dent, but if too wet, you will probably have created some new texture :) Once you've coated the work with a layer of CWM, it can set up within about a 1/2 hour, but I usually will let it sit at least an hour or overnite. It's easy to want to rush this, but I think there is a slightly better result when I wait. As for buffing, on a smaller work I may buff, but on a large piece, usually not. Because I incorporate Gamblin's Galkyd Gel into the CWM/Oil mixture, this already gives a subtle sheen so buffing is not necessary. If you want to buff though, wait the minimum 30 minutes for the thin layer to dry! Best wishes :) Pam

    Pamela do you have a system as to how you hang your panels on your walls?

    • @PamelaCaughey
      @PamelaCaughey  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Deborah - I have 3/4in plywood walls. These are nice and sturdy vs drywall, which would only work if you used screws in studs! Since I like to move my work around a lot, I screw into the plywood at about 12 in intervals for maximum versatility :) Best, Pam

      jay tetzlaff -the still images at the end of this video show the cold wax/oil applied - this was done after I show the clear gesso application. My camera battery died so I included the still images only-so sorry 😐

    Great video Pamela, just wondering what kind of acrylic you’re using, do they come in the squeeze bottles or do you custom make them? They seem to be of a great consistency. Thanks 😊
