    Reed and Doom, essentially two sides of the same coin. Both wanting the same exact thing, but going about it in different ways. Reed has friends and family to keep him in check and ultimately do the right thing. He has humanity with his family. Doom doesn't. He lost his family. And he'll make sure he never loses anything again. That's why he holds Latveria so close. He holds everything so close in the belief that only he can advance humanity. This was best explained in Secret Wars 2015 #9.

      There's also the fact they both are men traumatized by guilt. Reed mistake led his family to become the F4 while Doom's mistake led his face to be desfigured. The difference is how they handle: Reed has the support of his family who help him to face his guilt and forgive himself, to see the good in their lifes. Doom chose to just isolated himself in his ego. He refuses to take responsability for his actions (choosing to blame Reed for his problem) and tries to gain more power, trying to become a god rather than the flawed human he truly is. His armor can even be seen as the wall he created between himself and others, a tool to make him feel strong powerful, when in reality all it did was make him alone than ever.

    i see reed like spider-man on a grander scale. while spider-man will always choose to save a citizen from danger over prioritizing his personal life, reed will choose to save the world over prioritizing his personal life. as the quote that peter lives by, "With great power comes great responsibility," is reflected to what reed lives by too but on a grander scale. it generally up to these characters to find the balance between these two life they live. also reed's personal struggle isn't that he cares too little, but that he cares too much.

    • @TxSonofLiberty
      @TxSonofLiberty 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Incorrect. If that were true, Reed would have sacrificed his personal life to assure Kang never existed... he chose to do the opposite, and guarantee Kang/Immortus/Rama Tut's existence a minimum of three times (Franklin, the miscarriage, and Valeria). Reed is not like Peter... Peter sacrificed his wife and child for a woman that told him she was fine remaining dead... Peter gives up good things for a confused sense of responsibility... Reed sacrifices all of time and space for his own personal ego, keeping the gate to the Negative Zone, defending Galactus, intentionally not curing Ben to have a bodyguard even 3000 years beyond Reed's own lifetime so Ben can make sure Kang is protected by Ben.
      Reed's motto is "I'm the Smartest Man there is, so shut your stupid mouth and believe whatever I tell you. I'm always right, you're always wrong. What I say is all that matters."

    The biggest problem I have with Civil War is that Reed already proved why the Super Hero Registration Act was a bad idea in the first issue of Walt Sinonson's run on the FF and went to Congres to demonstrate why such an act is unconstitutional. It was actually really bizarre to see him on Tony's side having read that run of FF before even tackling Civil War.

      @@D_0_S The problem I have with that is that the family has never really cared about their public image in relation to the status of other heroes. They have helped Mutants, Inhumans, and other disenfranchised from persecution and the fact their identities are already publically known since day one, they never felt the need that everyone else should follow suit just cause they do, case and point with Spider-man.

    • @D_0_S
      @D_0_S 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Ashguy733 This was during the time of the FF when the most pain was happening.
      You gotta think about it in terms of the fact that this version had basically lost most of the funding after returning from their first multiversal trip. That's something that, as scientists and more than likely just government funded scientists, Reed and his entire family use for their daily lives. Reed, while seeming extremely out of character, also is 100% in character as not giving the full explanation for why he chose Tony's side. Reed did it for their lives to not become muddled by losses they couldn't afford on top of already being a public image that would have been helped with his actions giving him access to more government grants and funds.
      If anything, I treat the FF as the Greek Pantheon. They are the First Family in the Marvel Universe. That doesn't equate to the best one, but it does mean they tend to be the most dysfunctional family while also being the most capable of being able to come back together.

    • @Ashguy733
      @Ashguy733 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@D_0_S They lost most of their funding during the Heroes Return era where they had gone from the Baxter Building to Pier 4, but then regained the building by the tail end of that era and then in Mark Waid's era right on the cusp of Civil War they essentially are back in good financial straits for most of it, by doing what they had orginally done in the 60s which was merchandising the first issue of his run is essentially having a corporate executive going on adventures with and viewing the dynamics of the family for marketing purposes in terms of their comic book in the marvel universe Johnny even gets a job in finances at the respective business that allows the company to flourish, but you are correct that in Waid's run they do run into some financial strains before the FF take over Latveria arc, but they aren't penniless? Like they are Pier 4 bad? Reed comments he had to sell off some patents to the government, but that they aren't dependent on them for their financial support hence the private business they establish to help fund their projects and family. Again it just feels weird to me considering that in Hickman's run when Osborn shows up on their doorstep with the Dark Avengers telling them to shut down their operations they don't and stand up against him. I know its post Civil War and its Osborn, I just don't see Reed ever giving in to government pressure that often unless its to do with foreign relations.

    Well, Reed suffers from status quo syndromme and the relativisation of villains: If Marvel comics treat the characters with the gravitas they have Reed could solved most of the world problems with his fam, and that requires a lot of creativity to create new conflicts and villains. Second, we have the praise on Doom, who is a badass but often his plans threatens the world thanks to his ego and sense of micromanaging, we are talking about the man who threw a temper tantrum and sent bombs to his own people, who tried to destroy Galactus when it was provem that was a bad idea and that stole Reed's life on Secret Wars creating a fracture reality with servitude and a code of honor that served only himself. Victor is not right, if he were truly smart he would make a permanent alliance with his grestest foe to indeed solve everything.

    I was touched by your thoughtful explanatory plea of defense on Reed's behalf. I've always really liked Mr. Fantastic ever since i could pick up a comic book from the rack at the grocery store as a small boy. I see no need to alter my opinion all these years later. If only he could be PROPERLY portrayed, and get the shine he is worthy of as a flagship American comic book character.

    Reed got a very bad rap in the 2000, rare were the people actually reading Fantastic Four when the Event craze came and he found himself an Illuminati and his brilliant mind must be involved in every collective bad idea they got. Civil War really made him look like a mad scientist and World War Hulk had no fallout for him.
    Then when Hickman revitalised the FF book he smartly took this "problem-solver uber scientist" persona and used it as the main flaw of the character, which make sense, adressing it is a way of redeeming him in some way.
    Main problem with Reed is that he's too much of a boyscout hero, he can be gentle and good natured to a fault. In many ways he's kind of the nerdy kid still, hanging out with his weird crew, lost in his passion doing his own thing and being overlooked. He saved the Marvel Universe so many times but you don't feel like he made friend with most of the heroes besides Spider-Man and Black Panther.
    I feel he's been written like someone who's actually on the spectrum sometime and I kind of like that.

    This'd make for a fantastic F4 threequel tbh. Movie 1 focused on Thing which made sense, he has the best conflict, But after that movie ended with him coming to terms with it, how great it'd be to show Reed as the one who can not move on, exacerbated by him becoming a father.
    The plot then could revolve around Franklin's powers but also on Reed coming up with some grandiose plan (or several) attempting to fix everything and redeem his perceived mistakes, which go awry. Marvel has an Agatha Harkness show running so we could bring her in maybe too, also giving a link to the MCU.

During the Kirby and Byrne years he was first and foremost a family man. Wise as a husband and father, as well as a scientist. But over the years, writers have just taken that away. Now hes always written as cold, calculating and indifferent to others. It's why I quit reading FF comics years ago. I hope the upcoming movie brings some of that warmth back to him.
