Just what I was thinking
My theory about Doom is that he became a villa in to counter the threat of Reed Richards. If you look at it Doom prevented RR from abusing time travel if he invented it and every time Doom seizes power it could be taken as preventing others from claiming and misusing it. Then weirdly despite having unopposed power he lose it when things can normalize. I think Doom found the most effective way to use his own gifts to help mankind and oppose the dangers of superscience. He could never be a typical hero and wouldn't be effective if he tried. Without Doom RR never would understand or care about the dangers of what he dabbles in.

I think Reed is less so an asshole for not having already solved all the world's problems, and moreso just... VERY easily distracted by the allure of pure scientific discovery, as well as any and all superhero-related shenanigans he and his family are constantly getting caught up in.
Edit: Everything involving the Illuminati and such is definitely valid reason to call him an asshole, though.
What they did to Hulk was just awful. Though that was intentional and they suffered the consequences of their hubris.
He allowed all the Superhero Registration nonsense after using the fact you’d have to register all metahumans if Mutant Registration went through, and that something like 20% of people had the meta gene, to argue successfully agains Mutant Registration.
Reed Richards is cartroonishly smart, but he's also arrogant and tends to not see the forest for the trees. The Fantastic Four keep him grounded, and The Maker is what happens when he doesn't have that.
@@HunterStiles651
Exactly!
@@nvfury13As all Marvel fans have accepted. We don't judge how your goat acts during Civil War. Everyone was acting insanely out of character and immoral.
Richards created a device the size of one of a set of rear view mirror fuzzy dice that generated enough power to supply the entire US. It is installed in some of their tech, but not given or even sold outside those uses, despite the fact it could change the world instantly. It needs no fuel, produces no pollution, and is highly safe and stable.
Doom created a similar device and uses it to give free electricity to all of Latveria. He also donated some prototypes (larger and slightly less power output) to several small struggling nations he finds worthy (meaning he finds their leaders worthy).
Years back there was this huge Twitter post detailing quite comprehensively all the awful things Reed has done and sort of concluding that he's a total sociopath. Whilst I don't believe that, he IS dangerously irresponsible and shortsighted. He has intelligence, but not wisdom.
Unlike Doom, who has both intelligence and wisdom
He really isn't. He's a flawed man who tries his best. In 60 years of comics he's gonna fuck up a few times. But overall he's a man who desperately wants to solve as much in his lifetime that he ends up making some dumb decisions in the meantime. That's where the other members come in. @@elfascisto6549 That actually changes what i said.
Jokes aside the problems with Marvel comics is they pick and choose what can and cant be done with technology. Heck Scarlet Witch herself could say no more cancer and it would be gone
Damn, he didn't even mention the worst part about the Council of Reeds: they had decided that no Doom could be trusted in any universe and started hunting them down, lobotomizing them, and imprisoning them en masse. It was so bad that when Doom was looking into multiversal stuff before Secret Wars '15, someone(Molecule Man?) informed him that there were distinctly less of him throughout all realities than other people. They kidnapped a statistically significant amount of Doom out of an *infinite* supply.
Didn't one version of Reed solve world hunger? Which just makes 616 Reed look worse, because it means he COULD make that kind of change but chooses not to.
Most people could, it genuinely only takes money to solve it. But the issue is status quo and the greater timeline making it so overall there can't be massive changes to the universe like that.
The best way to descibe Reed is he's the type of guy to patent Insulin and not allow other people to make it not out of Greed but Pride and the idea he is the only one smart enough to bring it to the people. He doesn’t make it though and just goes and adventures in the Tenticle Dimension.
This is all because marvel doesn't allow characters to grow or develop. God forbid a character has development and actually accomplish their goals.
Reed Richards has stretchy powers because he is a clingy and obsessive person. Sue has invisible powers because she is insecure and protective person. Johnny has fire powers because he is a reckless and volatile person. Ben had a rock appearance because he is a rough and hardheaded person.

Ultimate Reed kind of tried to solve the world as the maker but he was coming from such a place of resentment that the rest of the Marvel Universe would never follow. But the mere fact The Maker wouldn't allow his brilliant mind to go to waste and use it and try to fix the world even as a villain make him so much more entertaining than OG Reed for me.
Also, during One More Day, Dr. Strange helps Spider-Man by making him be able to be everywhere at once and ask everyone for help with Aunt May being shot.
One of them Is Reed.
The smartest man alive can't save the life of an elderly woman who was shot.

@@O.uroboros.777 SILENCE MINION No one shall talk to doom like that under no circumstances
There’s various reasons why the writers don’t have Reed fix everything that he should be able to
1.) To keep the world similar to the real world. This is particularly common in an Urban Fantasy, superhero, or other series whose setting is superficially similar to the real world. Unlike, say, Star Trek or The Lord of the Rings, one of the key draws of the series is that it could take place right outside the reader's window, which is lost if you make the fictional world too fantastic in comparison.
2. To ensure that there's some level of drama in the story. If the super science or magic can literally do anything, then there's no reason the heroes can't just figure out a creative way to get them out of any jam. Goodbye potential conflict.
3. To keep the hero unique. If the hero shares their technology, magic, discoveries, or other advantages with the world, they'll cease to be uniquely special. Iron Man isn't Iron Man if he sells his suits on every street corner or shares the technology so anyone can produce them, necessitating an explanation for why he doesn't.
4.) To avoid trivializing real-life problems. If Mr. Fantastic actually does cure HIV in the Marvel Universe, there will be plenty of real people still HIV-positive, and plenty of researchers still investing untold millions of dollars and work hours to fight HIV when they finish the comic. This can make creators wary of tackling such issues, as it can be considered insensitive to have such a heavy burden in real life be casually miracle-cured in fiction. Also, in the interest of representation, disabled people exist in universes where science should theoretically be able to cure their disability. However, either the disability is so ingrained as a facet of the character's portrayal; or curing them could be seen to detract from their mass-market appeal as someone that other disabled readers can relate to; or it's felt that a setting where "future utopia" means "disabled people don't exist" has very unfortunate implications.
5.) To keep multiple titles within a Shared Universe consistent with one-another; comic book universes would approach a new level of Continuity Snarl and Depending on the Writer if writers had to keep track of every published book in their universe for which major diseases/blights had been cured by the heroes and which ones weren't.
TLDR Because Marvel's necessity for mass appeal doesn't allow the characters to make real progress in their stories
Lets not forget he just straight up turns evil or insane any time he's mentally compromised even a tiny bit.
Like that time there was a disease or some kind withering going on in New York, Reed went crazy and Spider-Man melted him or something to use him as web fluid to hold prople together.
2 alternate universes with completely alternate depictions of Reed.
Honestly? This is something that kinda holds true about plenty of comic characters.
Writers want to display them as cosmic genuises, capable of absolutely incredible things- but because the status quo, because they want state of the world around the character to match ours to an extent so we can relate, these genuises can never have any real impact, not any more than anyone in the real world has.
Reed isn’t curing cancer, Bruce Wayne isn’t tackling systemic issues that cause people to commit crimes in the first place, and Tony Stark isn’t solving world hunger. If they did, readers couldn’t just view the worlds they live in as “ours but with superheroes”.
And how tf does crime exist in a world with the flash? He has the speed to move hundreds of people away from a nuke, some of them being pretty close to it, after it exploded without anyone getting injured
@@lePirateManhe’s fast not omniscient

"I've come to the realization that reed doesn't want the world to change."
At this point, what comic book superhero does want the world to change? Every superhero that isn't an anarchist or isn't written by an anarchist is stuck in this weird paradox of wanting to make the world a better place and then immediately turn around and make an enemy out of anyone that has a problem with the status quo. Pop culture detective has a pretty good video about this paradox.
1. The 2006 Fantastic Four animated series I feel depicted Reed the best. He is so enthralled by pure scientific discovery that almost everything else seems to take a backseat. It makes him sometimes come off as an aloof arsehole, when in reality he's just so innocently invested in learning as much as he can about the universe/multiverse, to the point he sometimes forgets to eat & sleep. That's why the rest of the Fantastic Four are so important, they bring him back down to earth and make him focus on the world around him.
2. The Planet Hulk storyline was slightly improved by the Planet Hulk Animated Movie (2010) where they changed it so that the INITIAL plan was for Hulk to be sent to a planet that was vibrant and could support him living there, but was also devoid of other sentient life. Effectively giving Hulk exactly what he wanted, a place where he can live out his days in peace, rather than one where he would be doomed to die on alone. It was him messing up his ship that made him land on Sakaar.
Granted, its still a bad solution because The Hulk doesn't MIND people when they're actually nice to him, he's just sick of people trying to kill him, use him and/or "help" him.
2006 Fantasic Four was the best animated depiction of Reed Richards Bar none. He was the only version of the character I didn't want to drown as a baby
@@JasonTalksEverythingthere's like 3 other animated Reeds.
I'll always remember the Italian edition of Marvel NOW's first Iron Man series where at one point there was a small introductory text about Tony that literally said something along the lines of "... Probably the smartest individual in the entire world (GOT THAT, REED?! AND STOP DYEING YOUR HAIR, YOU VAIN PIECE OF CRAP!)". Apparently every Marvel fan agrees on dunking on Reed at any moment and I find that hilarious
Still one of the funniest moments in Marvel Comics was when Tony Stark used the Infinity Gauntlet to make everyone as intelligent as he is. And eventually it cuts to Reed Richards and he just says "I feel...... stupid. But why....... Tony."
But Reed did fix world hunger. Galactus hungers for worlds and Reed put him in his place with the Ultimate Nulifier.
I will say that a likely reason Reed's solutions haven't fixed anything is because if on earth 616 everything was fixed, there would be no more conflict. Superhero comics are about a conflict and there need to be a conflict to keep making stories. Marvel requires there to be a conflict in order to keep making stories so they can keep making money, so if all of the sudden earth 616 was fixed, there would no more conflict, no more struggle, and there wouldn't be any stories left and money to make. But, they can fix other worlds because they aren't the main world or the main focus of marvel.
The solution to that is to not have characters that are smart enough to fix the world. If you have someone that is fully capable of fixing all of the world’s problems, and they have the motivation to do it, but they just don’t, then the story is bad and doesn’t make sense.
This is a terrible argument. Reed is not forced to solve some problem just because he can, he has his goals to achieve and he should seek them and not something else.
Important addition to World War Hulk. Hulk actually became Sakaar’s ruler and was happily married with a child on the way, but the Illuminati’s pod self-destructed, killing his wife and unborn child (although the child kinda survived? It’s classic complicated comic book stuff). This was the catalyst that caused him to invade Earth.
You didn't read wwhulk did you
Did you Reed the comic? None of that was the Illuminatis fault it was one of Hulks friends that blew up the ship.
Wasn’t it that they were going to send Hulk to a peaceful planet and where he could live in peace without aggressors but he destroyed the hull of the ship once he realized he was tricked and got sucked into a wormhole to the planet Sakaar. Where he thought they really wanted to send him to so he hated them even more.
I'm surprised I've never seen people use "well reed slapped his wife so ant man should get a break"
I think that if any superhero will try to actually change something in the world, governments and corporations will try to stop them because many of the problems humanity in general have are beneficial for people of high authority. I don't say that they shouldn't try to do it but it can be explanation of why many superheroes that can change the world don't do it.
there was a guy on tiktok that got asked "wich is the most evil superhero and the goodest villian?", now i understand why he said Reed and Doom LOL
I believe in a throwaway panel he invented calorie free ice cream safe enough for his pregnant wife. Not the ice cream itself but food of that nature might save millions of lives and trillions of dollars in healthcare costs. So unless it’s made of vibranium somehow Reed is a jerk just for that alone.
Plus his series is the reason people see Sub-Mariner (the only one who objected to launching Hulk into space) as a villain.
Because he's a rapist.
He was a misogynistic character from the start.

He didn't know it was an alien species, he saw a fabric that he believes was nanotech and have it to Peter. That's not that bad.
There is no war, famine, or pestilence in glorious Latveria!
I loved how in one of the first dozen or so issues Reed lost his entire fortune gambling on the stock market and the FF were forced to move out of the Baxter Building.
Was that the one where a rich guy was tricking the F4 and making them turn against each other and he faked that.
sending the hulk to space was a jerk move
it's funny how the rich, genius's have all this intelligence and never once think, "hey maybe i should cure cancer of maybe solve world hunger."
Say hello to his alternate counterpoint The maker that shows how bad Reed Richards could possibly be.
GLORY TO LATVERIA!
I think you are correct, but your criticism is contradictory.
Reed basically has no moral compass. He's a genius, and like most genius's, he does not understand other PEOPLE. The other three members of the Fantastic 4 make up for this major failing, and Doom is incredibly important as a cracked mirror of what Reed could easily become.
The best example of the problem is, world hunger.
I real life, world hunger is ALREADY SOLVED. We produce more than enough to feed the entire planet and then some. The problem, is that those resources do not get to the poor who need them, due exclusively to corrupt government leadership. All we, or Richards, needs to do to solve the issue, is abolish every corrupt world government and set up a dictatorship to crush anyone who resists our "help."
Reed literally does this in Civil War. IT wasn't even that hard to talk him into it. The only thing keeping Reed from becoming Doom is the same thing that keeps him from being more effective in making the world a better place, his family keeping him in line.
Also let us not forget that this an individual that cannot cure either the Thing or the Hulk.
And that's his deepest regret. As much as the F4s powers have allowed them to accomplish Reed has genuinely expressed that it's his biggest regret because he hated seeing his family feel like outcasts and freaks, and be mutated due to his arrogance.
I'm not a fantastic four fan, so I don't know if this video is accurate, but if it is, then it would make sense as it is very difficult to write characters who are so ridiculously intelligent (like Reed Richards).
It's not very accurate. It leaves out an insane amount of context and uses very surface level claims about the stories it brings up.
Glory to DOOM and Latveria 🗣‼️🫡
I think the point with exiling the Hulk is that yes, The Hulk doesn't attack people out of nowhere, there's always a provocation, but the Hulk doesn't stop at the thing that threatened him and he usually goes on a rampage after, and you can't risk him leveling a city every time someone pisses him off, even though it's not his fault.
Now that you've mentioned Reed Richards as this illusion of a superhero. Now I'm thinking, what about all the other superheros?
Knowing that they have monumental superpowers and peak capabilities compared to ordinary people. I would think we would be able to see a huge difference once they come on the scene.
All that is applied to reed here could be applied to tony and other super geniuses(except doom, he is like only reason why his country isn't a dumpster fire), reed is just the smartest

simple answer: a man must sacrifice something to be that smart, and what he sacrifices is practicality. it takes a lot to make his tech commercially available, which he simply doesn't care about anything if it removes from his ability to further his knowledge.
I do remember seeing somewhere most of Reed’s invention patents were bought by major companies to prevent them from radically changing the world’s economy but the fact that Reed allows that to happen and doesn’t make his stuff open source still says a lot.
They do not. The Fantastic Four is also a nonprofit organization that sells their inventions that they then use to fund more inventions.
