The story behind the tears is that Robert Plant asked Jason Bonham ( his godson ) to attend this event with him in honor of his dad the late drummer of LZ John Bonham but Jason said he had another engagement and couldn't attend but then Jason walked on stage with Heart surprising them all and sat at his late dad's drum kit and the emotion was overwhelming
Watching Robert cry at the tribute to his good friend and the original drummer John Bonham always gets me And the part where Jason Bonham looks up to say “Hope I made you proud Dad”
The Kennedy Center Honors is a lifetime achievement award. Very important. Heart was perfect to honor Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant cried. That never fails to touch me. The drummer is the son of their original drummer who always wore a derby hat. Such a momentous occasion. Robert Plant is sill touring, now with Alison Krauss. Listen to their "Gone, Gone, Gone."
I love Heart, but when I first heard that they were going to be covering this at the Kennedy Center Honors I thought it was going to be a train wreck. Boy did they prove me wrong. Probably the best cover to any song I've ever heard, which only made me love Heart even more. I can only imagine how stressful it had to be to sing one of the most iconic songs ever written to the bank that made it famous. I think you summed it up perfectly. This song is a gift to mankind.
Ann Wilson has one of the most powerful female voices. And her sister Nancy can play a mean guitar. This is one of the best tributes to Led Zeppelin with Ann & Nancy doing the classic song "Stairway To Heaven". No one else could have pulled it off as well. "Heart" have had so many great hits such as "Magic Man", "Crazy On You", "Barracuda", "What About Love", "Never", "Dog & Butterfly", "These Dreams", "Alone" etc.
Robert Plant gave an interview where he said that it was this rendition of his song that allowed him to release it. He, along with Jimmy Paige and John Paul Jones lit up (as seen in the clip) watching this arraignment of their song!
You have 50 people singing, an Orchestra and a rock band and yet Ann has no trouble rising above all singing this song to perfection. Best live cover ever imo and I've been listening to music for 65yrs.
Every single time I hear this, I cry. I’ve seen Heart and Led Zeppelin at different shows. I love this. Exceptional performance. Thanks for your touching reaction. 💜👏🏻
I've watched this video more times than I think anything else on TH-cam, and it never gets old. It was such a pleasure to watch your reaction - a genuine, thoughtful response to an iconic performance.
The three men in balcony that the camera kept returning to, are the three remaining members of Led Zep - and the amazing drummer on the stage is the son of the original Led Zep drummer. This was an iconic rendering in honour of the Led Zep and the song. I can never get enough of this performance (but I am a child of the 60's and 70's. When had some incredible music back then).
An absolutely stunning performance of one of the greatest rock songs of all time. The reaction of the lads, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones says it all. Also, the fact that Jason Bonham was playing the drums and nailing it just like his father John Bonham is just perfection. Of course, the Wilson sisters hit it out of the park as well.
It's at the Kennedy Honors. Where they pay tribute to Led Zeppelin in 2012. Every year The Kennedy Honors Musicians from all over or not musicians other people who contributed to society. Lez Zep band said Heart did the song good. Very moved by their performance.
It is like an out of body experience watching that wonderful performance of one of the greatest compositions ever. I love your reactions videos and the words you use to describe what you are seeing and listening too. It is a gift I do not share. Thank you
I have to agree, it is one of the greatest covers. You can even see that the remaining members of Led Zep enjoyed it too. It is my understanding that the band members invited the son of the band's drummer, John Bonham, who has since passed away, to join them at the tribute. He made up and excuse to not attend and surprised them by playing drums in the tribute band.
It's not a cover It's a tribute A cover gets covered in the studio or on a live album This is a tribute That's the difference Heart never tried to record it on an Album
i agree they are paying tribute to Zep. That is the whole purpose of the Kennedy Honors, to pay tribute to artists. Ever heard of someone covering a song live though? Just semantics.@@CjSalch
@@rayj1011 yes but on a live album or studio album Or they have already covered it by all ready recording it before they did it live Heart never recorded it or put it out as a single,,.. that's what makes this only a tribute
Don't believe anyone could have paid better tribute to the great Led Zeppelin & their official #1 Classic Rock song of all time than the Wilson sisters & Jason Bonham, at these Kennedy Center Honors. Thanks for your reaction.
Ive seen this several times and i always cry with joy and sadness. Also makes me think of Robert's young son that died of illness. So emotional and grand. ❤❤❤❤❤
I am so glad that this was captured for all time. It was one of those special moments that only happens occasionally in a lifetime. For all those musicians and singers preforming in front of Led Zeppelin flawlessly was majestic.❤️
Sooo glad you chose the FULL version. There are other versions of this that are on TH-cam that are edited for time of the performance and this is one you do not want to miss one note! Loved your emotions❤
This, still an edited performance due to time constraints, there is a couple more verses that were cut out. It is an epic tribute none the less. Loved it as LZ did...
@@sledgehammer6698 that's crazy but I get the time constrains edits but even the full version on TH-cam of the entire show is edited. I've only seen the entire show, the version that starts with the Jason Bonham introduction and this "Full version". Whoever did the original edits did some weird thing with the audience shots, one show The Obamas and one has this misplaced shot of Bonnie Raitt waving her hands witch actually happened during an earlier part of the night.
Cool. I get into everytime I see this. Not just a great song and an amazing cover. The moment, the audience, and getting a standing ovation from one Legend to another... it's absolutely frigging wonderful.
So glad you watched the "Full Version" of this performance as there are chopped-versions out there that cut out the entire second verse and a full minute of this masterpiece. Bravo!
The chopped version was the broadcast version that aired on TV. Probably because of time constraints. There is also a full version of Lenny Kravits performance of Whole Lotta Love from the same show that's really good also.
I also wonder if, is this the 1st time ever in their lives, that the members of Zep have actually gotten to experience the magic of this song, as in how it is to be a listener of it, to HEAR it and its mastery, because, this performance is so bloody amazing, there would be zero room for the 'musician' in them all to come out and ruin it by critiquing every little thing, subconsciously. The performance was so consuming that I honestly believe that it was a certain type of magic bestowed on them that night, yes it was a tribute, but I believe it actually bestowed the most reverent gift of all to them, they got to hear and feel it, as we did. That is why Robert could barely contain his emotion, while he has played this for an eternity, he finally got to EXPERIENCE it. What a gift.
LZ saw Heart in the early 70s when they were an LZ cover band. Usually they frowned upon other people playing their music, but they were so impressed, they gave them permission to continue playing their tunes.
I just love the both of you. You express yourselves so beautifully picking up on all of the different aspects of various performances. I just love your reaction to this - you don't just listen to the music, you feel it on various levels. Thank you for sharing.
Every time I watch this I’m reduced to tears…Robert Plant tearing up just puts it all together. He and John Bonham were very close. Jason Bonham Johns son was the man on the drums. Just one of those musical expirences that transcends whatever you think you know about music, about love, about life.
I was lucky enough to see Heart in San Francisco at a small venue overlooking the water. It was their zeppelin tribute concert maybe 10-12 years ago. Absolutely amazing ❤
In the comfort of your Floydian chair, you are in a perfect position to receive all the wondrous musical offerings that are on offer to us all, let it surround you, find it´s way into your heart and soul..Peace.
The most beautiful and fitting tributes I have ever seen and heard. I don't think another vocalist could have pulled this off like Ms. Wilson did. She is one of the greatest lead singers ever. She is the complete package. And for Jason Bonham to be playing his father's drum kit and wearing his father's bowler hat.... It's all just a great performance and story.
I get everything you said about this performance. I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and Heart. Yet every time I see this performance, I tear up. It's that powerful. I'm sure people have mentioned in the comments that the drummer Jason, the son of the original drummer John Bonham, who passed away in 1980.
Y'all's reaction was a joy to watch. Dominika said it well -- this performance is a diamond in the jeweled necklace of popular cover songs. So many things came together to put this performance over the top. Like many of the commenters said, I too have watched this video many times. And while the song and overall performance never get old, witnessing the reactions of hosts who are viewing this video for the first time is always moving.
Beautiful reaction from you both to an iconic song from an iconic band performed to perfection by the Wilson sisters. I was a teenager in the 70’s and Led Zeppelin were ROCK GODS.
Well if you believe in karma in any way, then you should be proud of this reaction. You're reacting to such a special moment, and because you are special people with big hearts and a clear passion for music, your reaction fit the moment like a glove. A perfect fitting, emotional and passionate glove. We'll call it "The Glove of Love"! ™️😎 Great job you two, as always. Cheers from Toronto, Canada. ☮️🎵
Agree. That was awesome. The guys really appreciated the work being done for them. Roberts face after Anne hit the high spot…..Jimmy watching this other man playing his guitar notes and you could see him moving his mouth for each note and his smile of appreciation. The late drummers son playing the drums without them knowing in advance.
No one knew Jason was going to be playing drums that evening, Robert Plant was moved to tears seeing his best friends son playing that night wearing his dads famous bowler hat and playing his drums ,and the memories of his dear friend Jon Bonham flowed through Plants eyes as he watched on.. At the after party Robert Plant approached the Wilson sisters and said that was the best version of that song he ever heard.
The drummer is John Bonham's son ( The original drummer ) , Hence his salute at the end and how emotional he was. You would love their concert Celebration Day Kashmir and No Quarter live are incredible !!

also, the large choir all wore the same hat that his father wore.
Thx you guys , I never knew the story behind Jason being there !
Also Robert Plant is Jason's Godfather.
@@rsw1227 as mentioned in my comments
And the hat that Jason is wearing is actually the same hat his dad wore.
Bonzo's son doing his dad proud on the drums.
I'm not afraid of saying this is one of the best live cover songs ever.
It's a Tribute
A Cover gets covered in the studio or on a live album
This is a tribute
That's the difference between a cover and a tribute
Just saying
Cover, tribute - whatever - done with class and absolutely apropos in every way.
Ann Wilson was 62 years old when she sang this song, imagine that
She has my vote for the greatest female rock singer of all time. What a legacy Heart has!
Between her and Pat Benatar for me
Watching Robert cry at the tribute to his good friend and the original drummer John Bonham always gets me

My thought also.

Yes it's a tribute, but in my eyes IT'S LOVE!
The drummer was Jason Bonham son of the original drummer John Bonham who passed away in 1980.
THE best cover of any song, ever, brilliant.
Nancy said when they were growing up, all the other girls wanted to be with Led Zeppelin, but she said, she and Ann wanted to be Led Zeppellin.
