The sheer tension this movie still makes me feel after i watched it about 2 times before, is insane.

The first Williams record I purchased. Great score.
An absolutely amazing score for the greatest disaster flick of all time. Just watched the movie again recently, and it still holds up brilliantly.
It wasn’t just that this movie was stacked with an impossible amount of star-power, it’s that they also delivered excellent performances. Seriously, Steve McQueen AND Paul Newman AND William Holden AND Faye Dunaway AND Fred Astaire. I mean, holy smokes, the second stringers are Robert Vaughn and Robert Wagner, etc.. Hell, even bit-parts are played by serious actors, like Dabney Coleman. The result is a movie where suspension of disbelief is super-high, due to everyone, even small roles, delivering great performances, with excellent writing, remarkably good practical effects, and John Williams outstanding music.
I could not have said it better! Perfection.

Opening sequence with helicopter flying off California coast - then popping thru Fog to see Golden Gate bridge and John Williams opening score - Won for award at the beginning !
@@w9gb When I thought about it, I realized that may have been the first time anyone had done that sort of sweeping, theme driven opening. Today it’s somewhat of a cliche, but prior to The Towering Inferno, I don’t think it’d been done before.
It was the Best Movie in the World when I was 13. I saw it 12 times. I had the soundtrack album. Had read both books, and loved this music.
It’s always amazing that William’s did the music both for this and Earthquake in the same year. Poseidon Adventure completes his disaster Porn trifecta.

I was an extra in the dedication seqence. It was freezing cold at the Bank of America HQ plaza the night they filmed this at midnight. I lived in San Francisco for 17 years, and I had never been that cold up to that time. This is one of my favorite movies and I got to watch the special premiere for the families of firefighters who died the light of duty at a theater on Geary Boulevard. Got the beat Irwin Allen later quite by accident and I could not go to the party. He was throwing. I wish I had. I probably have watched this movie about 50 times.
How I wish I could shake your hand right now. This is one of my favorite films. It would've been awesome to be an extra in this film. Even if it wasn't the action sequences.

Let’s be honest, the main reason to watch this movie is to experience the legendary clashing of egos with Paul Newman and Steve McQueen duking it out so hard for top billing that they had to put their names diagonally in the credits.

Disaster movies don't get any better than...THE TOWERING INFERNO (but "The Poseidon Adventure" is a very close second)!!
After the fire has been extinguished, the lights are still on in large parts of the tower. Despite the fire, and tons of water that have been rushed trough it! Maybe, Simmons didn't do such a bad job after all. :)
