I remember winning 4 tickets to this movie when it opened in Chicago…took my best friends at the time - and the guy I ultimately married. 50 year wedding anniversary in 2023!!💕
The movie that created the chance for you and your husband to meet, how wonderful that is. I have to say, congratulations on your 50th wedding anniversary. (^_^)/
Me too at 75 but I have my wife of 50 years of whom I work at being a good man, a loving man, keep my temperment in check, appreciate all she does and that she waters down my drinks is much appreciated and that is saving us lots of money! Thank You Dean
Jennifer O'Neill (born February 20, 1948)[2] is a Brazilian-American author, model and former actress. Born in Brazil, and moving to the United States as an infant, she first came to prominence as a teenage model, as well as for her spokesperson work for CoverGirl cosmetics, which began in 1963 and spanned three decades. She made her feature film debut in the comedy film For Love of Ivy (1970), followed by a lead role in Howard Hawks's Western film Rio Lobo (1970).
This was me, in 1968' I was 15, and fell in love with a woman in her 20s, she fell in love with me also, she would not marry me, cause I'm 5' 8" she was 6' 5" she said I was to short! Anyway , she became a school teacher, and was married year's later to a guy 5' 5" GO FIGURE! but year's passed, and one day she showed up at my front door, we had a long courtship, and it was the most romantic time of my life! We never married, I moved away, but not a day goes by I don't think about her! After all these year's, I tried to contact her, to no avail, then Googled her name, and was sadly 😔 informed she had passed away in 08' of breast cancer 🎀 R I.P. MY SWEET' JODIE!
I remember seeing this film when it was released in ‘71. I was just about Hermie’s age and, damn, did I ever want to fall in love with someone who looked like Jennifer O’Neill. I was captivated by this movie - the storyline, the score, the beauty of a woman out of my reach - at 14 or 15 years old, I had no idea what falling in love was, nor would I until four years later when I met a girl my own age who stole my heart and broke it shortly thereafter. I’ve been fortunate to have been married for over forty years to the woman who made my life worth living, but hearing this theme music and watching this clip brought me right back to that time of teenage angst and sadness over losing at love for the first time. Time heals all, but the scars remain.
When they reach puberty, young people start to become conscious of the women they admire. And this movie was made based on the experience of the original author. That's why I think this movie and music strongly appealed to these young people and was shared. (It was able to empathize and see it according to my experiences and situations in the story) And most of all, I got the perfect actress for the role of the heroine, and also got a wonderful theme song. 'A bittersweet experience of fellowship with a longed-for woman', Is may be proof of the life lived by an immature and man who was young.
I'm the same as you. I can't say enough about the charm of this movie and music, but it's a wonderful work that will remain in my memory forever. Thanks for your comment!
I'm only 70! and have only seen this film once - even so, it remains fixed in my memory as a truly wonderful and iconic piece of work. I'll see if I can get a copy on DVD.
. . . Only for the ‘lucky’ one’s … I know of enough ‘other’s’ who have stated otherwise. It is and remains a most beguiling paradox; the ‘time’ of it passes so very quickly … but those memories only deepen intrinsically - somewhat like the most beautiful maze you can imagine … but a ‘maze’ nonetheless . B e w e l l
I dunno, not as in this movie, but perhaps in the minds of guys about 14 or 15 y/o? Sure they'll see attractive women of about 30. But nothing comes from that usually.
If, it wasn't for Michel Legrand's music. And if, the heroine wasn't Jennifer O'Neill. Probably, this movie wouldn't have been so evaluation. Those two points are the decisive points for the evaluation, i think a lot of people think that.
Jennifer was gorgeous way back in 1971. And today (2022) still gorgeous at 74 years old. Yes we all age however she has done so in amazing fashion. She makes my hair sweat. STILL! As in right now.
She's a living human being, and she'll grow old with each passing year. However, her brilliance and charm on the movie screen will forever be retained. As a symbol of youth admiration.
This movie captured a moment in time (like most movies do) in which America was more like America. The quiet strength of the narration of this man and his coming of age is as beautiful as the entire soundtrack by master composer Michel Legrand. A gem from wherever point of view you look at it.
The boy in this movie has grown as a person through the precious experience of one summer. You can see it in the boy's conversation and action in the movie and the grown-up boy's narration at the end. And above all the life-size acting of the boy and the heroine is natural and exquisite. The silent scene where the two spend the silent without talking is beautiful and very delicate atmosphere and overwhelming. And All I hear is the sound of waves...The bluish soft focus image was really beautiful. It's not a big-budget movie, but it's full of poetry, and the actors, director, and music are all excellent. my all time favourite!
Even if it doesn't win an Academy Award, it doesn't matter if it's not a big movie, and even if it's an unknown cast, "a movie that the audience likes" will be remembered for a long time to come. I think so!!
If ever there was a piece of music that perfectly matched the movie, it was The Summer of 42. A truly beautiful composition and a wonderful film. A masterpiece by Michel Legrand.
I have also my favorite movie musics there are various but, this is among them will enter the best 3. While editing this video, I got empathy by myself. The sense of unity between music and video was very attractive. You are right, this is A masterpiece by Michel Legrand. Thanks for comment! Have a nice day
RogerUSA, you are so right about the music which made this memorable movie even more special. It truly was "a masterpiece by Michel Legrand." Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Michel Legrand's musical score for this film won him the Academy Award in 1972 when this was released. Hard to believe it is now 50 years since this came out.
I saw this movie in the theater in 71 with my then girl friend who could have easily passed as a younger Jennifer O’Neill at the time. I was 15 and it was a very romantic night for us. That relationship slipped away from me, but I still think of her on occasion and scenes like this tug at my heart a little bit.
Everything is so perfect about this movie: the most gorgeous, captivating, classy Jennifer O'Neill, the memorable storyline, the dreamy scenery, and the MUSIC, ohhh, the music theme - all in a class of its own!!!
Yes, this movie is by no means a blockbuster with a lot of production costs, but no movie is as memorable as this one. There is no other movie that so beautifully and casually depicts a theme that everyone dreams of or experiences, I think so. The music, the movie, and 'the yet name is not known actor and actress' etc performers are perfect.
Like many, it's the same--seeing this movie as a kid and falling in love with Jennifer O'Neill was simply inescapable, the most beautiful girl you'd ever seen. That's how it was; hard to believe that was 50 years ago. A wonderful movie and beautiful score, moves me to tears every time I hear it. I always watch for it to play again on *TCM.*
"Summer of '42" is drawing a symbolic most brilliant part from our life.It will be a sweet and bittersweet memory that everyone think of. For that, will be many people may be able to share.
I have to confess. I Cry allways when I hear this song. Cannot control myself. Jennifer O'Neil had a kind of beaty simple, true. BTW, she was born in Rio de Janeiro.
When we touch this theme music and movie, our feelings change, such as desire, euphoria, loss, and remembrance. This song and Jennifer O'Neal's charm will had our feelings completely controlled. It was a truly wonderful film and music. Thank you for watching!
SUMMER OF '42 is perhaps the film that marked most deeply my adolescence and appreciation of women. I felt an empathy beyond words with the character of Hermie, played by Gary Grimes, and Jennifer O'Neil was a beauty to die for, and the music... oh the soundtrack by Michel Legrand still makes me stop everything to listen, whenever its notes reach my ears. And I listen with my heart as I go back at least 50 years to revisit memories of older women I wished - still wish - I had known intimately, but never did.
Few movies have so beautifully portrayed the sweet and sour events that people experience during puberty in the process of growing up. Hermie was played by Gary Grimes of newcomer but I was able to sympathize with her with him very natural performance. And it should be the beauty of Jennifer O'Neil who plays the heroine. The combination of these two persons, combined with Michel Legrand's music, I think seems to have established the appeal of this film. I thinking this movie and music are definitely excellent works that will resonate with many hearts. Thanks!
I saw this film this week, 2023 December, its amazing movie, wonderful Jennifer O,Neil, how she shows all mixture of feelings, fear, wonder, confusion, uncertainty, inspiration, with here calm angel face, with crystal flow of the music of Mitchell le grand, the scenes, waves sound....its legendary movie, even the boys did great I love Jennifer O Neil ❤
This video contains excerpts of the emotional scene changes of the heroine Dorothy, played by Jennifer O'Neill. That was the most moving scene in the movie for me. I made a montage of the sunset scene and footage of the two of us, which was not in the movie. I then layered the sound of waves to create the transition between Dorothy's heart and time. Your comment seems to point out this part, and I completely agree. Thank you so much!😊💗
I remember watching this movie over and over again and imagining me being that boy at his puberty. Fell in love with Jennifer O’Neil and still do. The music and movie was a classic masterpiece and still it is understated. I’ll die someday but still loving j O’Neil. In everybody’s life there’s a summer of ‘42. Sadly mine will never leave my mind. It’s everyday.
You're not the only one. Many peoplee, It seems that you are watching the movie with your adolescent self replaced by a boy and empathizing with your feelings. Yes, there is a summer of 1942 in everyone's life. Therefore, I think that people who have experienced puberty and have sensibility can sympathize. I think Jennifer O'Neil is a symbol of the image of an admired woman.
@@lemikeyles All true - I think it is also not just about the physical longings that naturally accompany the hormonal cocktail. As it's the time when we move away from our families to a greater or lesser degree, and start to contemplate making our own way in the world, for many young boys it is also the start of spiritual longings and a desire for truth, hope and for more 'certainty' than we generally feel. We don't want to 'fail' at life. For young men to put all onto an equally aspirational but often equally confused young women is a hell of a thing. If only we knew then how to be more transparent with our deepest feelings... Problem is, we rarely recognise them then for what they truly are. Sgnd just another helpless romantic!
Yes, it's a movie that was made without any production budget or big stars. But for some reason it stays in our mind. Maybe it's because it beautifully portrayed the mental landscape of adolescents, combined with a great theme song. It's a masterpiece of film and music in this genre. 😊♬❤
One of my all time favorite movies.... How I cried... The depth of emotion Jennifer showed. .. she was startling beautiful.... The young man did a fine job of acting. ...
Well, as you said, I can't say enough about Jennifer's charm in this movie. If were a young man in the midst of youth, she might be a symbolic woman who would fascinate anyone.
Beautiful theme music. Though I was not yet a teenager when this film came out, I can see how a young guy a few years older than me could fall hard for Jennifer O'Neil like I did for Farrah Fawcett and Lynda Carter. Looking at this movie as a mature man of 60, I see the heartbreak in her face after you see the letter of his passing on the table. The music seems to heighten her sense of loss and her desperate attempt to fill that void with the teenage boy. Oh how our hearts felt love and longing in those years! I treasure my memories so much of the loves of my youth!
The excitement of love that our feel for the first time in ourour youth that probably will be engraved in our mind most strongly in our entire life. This the movie and music do a great job of portraying that. All I can say is wonderful. Please, treasure your memories so much of the loves of your youth...
Whenever I hear this, I think of someone I met when I was 25, and she was 46. She told me she didn't know how long it was going to last, but to just enjoy the time we would have together. When it ended, it didn't hurt, but felt as if some lessons I needed at that point in my life had been given to me.
I was blessed to have had a similar experience. Not being a good-looking guy, poor background, socially awkward, my teen years were awful. At 19, by chance while out riding my bike along the Swansea foreshore in South Wales, in the Summer of 83, I met a woman who at the time, was in her mid-40s. I had stopped on the path to assist two girls who had trouble with their bikes (rather tarty girls to whom I had no attraction whatsoever!) when as I was trying to re-attach a chain to the wheel, the job was taken over by a guy in his mid 50s: clearly once a good-looking bloke, he was aging badly but was incredibly arrogant and clearly wanted to jump the two tarts, who were also up for it. Incredibly...he was With HIs Wife!! She stood at the side of the path, watching her stupid husband make a complete fool of himself with these two skanks, with a look of....pity, contempt, sadness? I wheeled my bike over to where she stood with hers...and she apologised to me, for his behaviour. We had an affair all through that summer: she turned a shy, clueless boy, into a man. Alas, by autumn, her husband had been reassigned to another country and they had to leave (he was a successful executive it seemed, they had a lovely house, rented by the company he worked for). Even back then, I knew I could never have her permanently...but I wished I could. She was... beautiful, and kind. Forty years on, I still think of her sometimes, despite being happily married for 15 years!
I agree with all of you, it is a wonderful film, from Jennifer O'Neil's natural beauty, to the touching story of love and tragedy. Hermie's innocence and Michel le Grand's beautiful score. Thanks to TH-cam for giving us these magic clips.
My all time, favorite movie. It always reminds me of the great times I had in Mendocino, where this film was made. The music was perfect, the actors were perfect, the film is perfect!
For you, the original landscape, there. it will probably never be forgotten. I understand very well.. Please cherish this movie and your memories. thank you
This movie provokes an intense sadness and longing for youth and its dreams and even some sort of respect for and acceptance of its disappointments and how much goes unrealized even while a better life seems so close to within our grasp, but we never really get there. This movie is legitimately painful to rewatch and is irreplaceable in my culture and hopefully continues to resonate in anyone's culture.
What a beautiful movie. I remember this growing up as a teenager. My wife would run circles around Ms O’Neill. Both of us were on active duty in the US Navy as Family Physicians. After all of our deployments and an eventual transfer to DC she had a seizure and was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. She died in April/2014 and was buried with full honors in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors. I miss her dearly after nearly 9 years. No significant other since, whom I would marry. I will see her again in Heaven. That I am sure of. R/ Dipak
Understand it, this is become a masterpiece depicting the interaction between an adolescent boy and the woman he admires. Also, the music is a memorable masterpiece.
My father was one of those who didn't come back. I was born in May, he was kia the following December. Missed him my whole life. Everything a father would have taught me had to be learned on my own.
Made in 1971, 26 years after the end of the war, many middle-aged people watching it then would have received just such a telegram. The music captures that mood perfectly.
This movie and music maybe surely resonate deep in the hearts of those who can share the background of the times and the experiences and thoughts of adolescence.
This movie made me tear up.. The war took away so much and left people in a nightmare trying to make something of the lives they had. This movie does just that!!!!
Certainly, you are right. Dorothy is deprived of a peaceful life with her husband because of the war. That was also the reason why she spent the night with a younger Hermie. Such stories are probably not uncommon in countries that have been involved in wars as unfortunate stories during wartime. This is what gave birth to tragic love or sweet love stories. I think so.
What a beautiful heart wrenching story! Who couldn't or wouldn't fall in love with a beautiful lady like Jennifer O'Neil's character? It's every man's fantasy to have a love story like this. The theme speaks and tells all there is need to know without conveying words.
There are few films that depict so beautifully and sentimentally the interaction with the woman of one's longing that a man meets during adolescence, one of the milestones in his life. Everyone who watches this film will recognize and feel nostalgic about their own "Summer of '42." It's truly a timeless masterpiece! (^o^)♪
At 75 now I clearly recall this with an older woman of over 50 years old 60 years ago. A woman on my paper route and I knew to keep this to myself. And I will never, never forget that experience...it was my awakening and it was good. Thank You Dean Mountlake Terrace, WA
I was surprised. you were 15 years old and you had with a woman 50 years older than you. But if it was good for you, it might be good to keep it in your heart. As an unforgettable memory... also from now .😊
Michel Legrand was such a memorable artist with the music he left us, and Sinatra singing this is also beautiful. There is some music whose beauty really touches your soul and this song is one of them, the lyrics are genius, as that's exactly what happens!
The natural beauty of Jennifer O'Neill. I was 19 years old when this movie was released in 1971. It touched my heart so deeply. Jennifer O'Neills natural beauty carried this loving story making it authentically timeless.
Your interpretation is shared by many viewers who were fascinated by this film and Jennifer O'Neal. I, the person who posted this video, am one of them. Thank you so much!
Jennifer O’Neill one of the most beautiful women in the world. I was 16 when this came out. It was captivating, funny, sad, moving and inspiring. One of the best films of the 20th century.
After my intermediate exam, we college friends went to local cinema to watch Summer of 42 and there was a long queue of ticket seekers but we were lucky enough through a lady were able to get tickets and watched this so classic movie. Still after about 45 years and watching this clip on TH-cam has refreshed my memories and days gone with the wind are treasure troll indeed. ❤

(It was able to empathize and see it according to my experiences and situations in the story)
And most of all, I got the perfect actress for the role of the heroine, and also got a wonderful theme song.
'A bittersweet experience of fellowship with a longed-for woman', Is may be proof of the life lived by an immature and man who was young.
Yes...I hear you.

Michel Legrand's music composition for the film 'Summer of '42' is WONDERFUL. Jennifer O'Neill had a delicate Beauty.
A film that talks about Love, Longing, Innocence, Loss... the soundtrack is Perfect.
You're right. I agree. 😊♬❤️
This is the saddest movie I’ve ever seen.

Michel Legrand's musical score for this film won him the Academy Award in 1972 when this was released. Hard to believe it is now 50 years since this came out.
You could not have said it better, I loved the movie and this song is so haunting!

I've loved this music since I was a kid. Jennifer is such a beauty.
You must have been quite precocious to have loved this music and Jennifer since you were a child. But that's not a bad thing. It's wonderful. 😁
Thanks!
Everything fits up.
I saw this film this week, 2023 December, its amazing movie, wonderful Jennifer O,Neil, how she shows all mixture of feelings, fear, wonder, confusion, uncertainty, inspiration, with here calm angel face, with crystal flow of the music of Mitchell le grand, the scenes, waves sound....its legendary movie, even the boys did great
I love Jennifer O Neil ❤

For me it was the summer of ‘72… what a Summer that was!

Well, as you said, I can't say enough about Jennifer's charm in this movie. If were a young man in the midst of youth, she might be a symbolic woman who would fascinate anyone.
We all did...what a wonderful piece of work this movie is. Jennifer O'Neill's performance is flawless and endearing.
Whenever I hear this, I think of someone I met when I was 25, and she was 46. She told me she didn't know how long it was going to last, but to just enjoy the time we would have together. When it ended, it didn't hurt, but felt as if some lessons I needed at that point in my life had been given to me.
It's the kind of movie that speaks for the feelings hidden in the hearts of many young people.
There is also quite a difference between your age (25) & Hermie's age (15). You weren't a child & he was & we're supposed to romanticize this. 🤔

I think so.

I was surprised. you were 15 years old and you had with a woman 50 years older than you. But if it was good for you, it might be good to keep it in your heart. As an unforgettable memory... also from now .😊
Was it the Seattle Times or the PI?
One of the best love stories ever ..brings back memories
I'm with you!
The fresh emotions will be revived.

Michel Legrand was such a memorable artist with the music he left us, and Sinatra singing this is also beautiful. There is some music whose beauty really touches your soul and this song is one of them, the lyrics are genius, as that's exactly what happens!
Yes, this is beauty music really touches our heart. 💚
Thanks for your comment!😊
The natural beauty of Jennifer O'Neill. I was 19 years old when this movie was released in 1971. It touched my heart so deeply. Jennifer O'Neills natural beauty carried this loving story making it authentically timeless.
Your interpretation is shared by many viewers who were fascinated by this film and Jennifer O'Neal. I, the person who posted this video, am one of them. Thank you so much!

This is one of the very best coming of age movies. Well worth watching and t he music is frantastic. They should redo it.
I agree. I would also like to recommend!
She should have received the Oscar that year! What a performance!!!!!
I also agree!!!!!😃
Jennifer O’Neill one of the most beautiful women in the world. I was 16 when this came out. It was captivating, funny, sad, moving and inspiring. One of the best films of the 20th century.
It was highly rated and I have no objection. That's right. I'm happy as if it were me!
I would be happy if you could revive your beautiful memories by watching this video. Thanks for your comment!🌺💛

I remember this movie with Jennifer O'Neil. It was a tear jerker.

Simplement eternelle et belle musique
This brings many tears. The happiest, most magical times in my life were when I was blessed by the companionship of a very special woman. They have all been gone for a long time now and I feel so empty...so lost 😥
You were very lucky that you had 'such a blessed time with a special woman'. that would be enough.
It's not enough; I want to experience more of that. Life alone is black and white for me. I want to live in color again, especially on the verge of 70.
