Correct at 49K there is no need to spend 66K for a TRD. I can't justify Toyota's new pricing. Similar to what Dodge/ram/Jeep did. They are chasing a small crowd of fools willing to spend full size money on what is essentially a two passenger truck (TRD taco). They will see that market quickly dry up as they have all but abandoned their loyal fan base (yota)
Quality? Compared to? Toyota? The company with the most customer complaints on quality since 2016 for the Tacoma. I like Toyota. Have a 4Runner and it's great but my Tacoma was garbage. As with any manufacturer there's good and bad. I hope the new Tacoma is better and that everyone that gets one is happy. However I think the days of the Tacoma being a better truck have come to an end. Ford and GM have closed the gap. Offering a product that competes. Certainly value wise. Not sure what Toyota was thinking with their pricing.

It doesn't have a "center locker" as reffered to a vehicle with a AWD transfer case. It has a part time 4wd transfer case with no center differential to lock..
New Tacoma is very much the class leader and this Colorado does not change that.👑👑👑. Can't wait until the haters post bullshit/hypocritical comments about Prices 😂🤣🤡
Good review, I’m 77 years old and just bought my first GMC Canyon Denali midsize pickup, I was a Toyota guy for 20 plus years, until this year. I’ve had 3 Tacomas, 1 FJ, and a Tundra all great vehicles, but 2024 showed me that Toyota is like any other car manufacturer, money, more money less quality and more money. Only time will tell how good or bad GM vehicles will last? Just my 2 cents. Thanks
Yes, the more you drive it the more you’ll like it for sure. I had the normal ZR2 and it was a good truck with some first year problems. I just picked up my new Bison and must say they did a good job. The normal ZR2 was a bit more comfortable but being able to sit higher and look even better was worth it for me.
Great little trucks, just bought a 24 Bison and the fact that GM and AEV left the transmission pan exposed is dumb. Agree on the bulbs, exhaust and the spare tire location is not ideal but all the flaws are easily fixed. I’ve been a Jeep guy for 40 years and am impressed with the way the Bison handles on road and off, won’t go where my built JKUR will but will be taking the bison on a lot of trails in the Rockies and farther trips than the Jeep
65k for a midsize 4 cylinder, you can’t talk up/ sales pitch voodoo enough for this to make sense. Any turbo engine will WILL fail faster than a naturally aspirated, heat…rings..list goes on.
the 2.7l is one of the best engines on the market. This isn't 2005 anymore. Whenever I work on ecoboosts (outside of first gen turbo failures from back in the day) it's never engine issues, have only had one 2.7l problem in the shop since they put them in silverados, and it was a lemon car that had a malformed chain tensioner from the factory. I do work on a lot of V8's, especially hemis and the 5.7 from Toyota.
All the mid size trucks are 4 bangers except the Raptor which will have a dealer markup to $75k. The 2.7 is a soild engine. Tune and CAI on a turbo will get you another 30hp Which should be enough(340hp/450tq) give your take.
@@Wrenchingandnursing I get it, I’m old. But I will still pass on todays “new” 4 cylinder. I own a fair amount of cars, from the 30’s to 2020. I’ve rather built myself or bought as a factory car… my 2000 sequoia has over 736k on the stock engine & transmission, this thing won’t die. Boosted cars/trucks just will never see those numbers… ever. Of course time will tell, but I’d bet serious money on my experience , being a metallurgist engineer for 49 years and having a better than average understanding on metal compound failures statistics, combining that with heat fluctuations and dissimilar metals. Simply put, they will fail at an accelerated rate versus an NA…. Yes by design, it’s been a topic for decades. Truth be known the Japanese manufacturing can be flawed, but wow the sheer amount of research they pay people like me to do a collective data over years on xxx conditions is staggering. I will hold my ground, I’m sure I will be dead and gone for failure debates on some of the newer designs. Think about Willy Wonka, if manufacturers created the ever lasting gobbstopper…1 piece of candy (car/truck) that could last xxx time, your financial algorithm would deteriorate to negative. Most people get tired of a design, life needs changes …you need or want a different model. I on the other hand make a purchase on data/materials/suppliers and location of manufacture, I tend to have the know on most of the inside information from coworkers/collaboration just to try and prove one of us wrong and teasing each other over some bourbon and BS. Hopefully I’m wrong, but time will tell.
Stop it with this crap argument. The 4 bangers of your generation was like 170 hp. The 4 banger of today are 300+ hp and 400+ torque. Welcome to modern technology. Such a fucking lame argument
Better deal is the regular ZR2 at 49K. You still get the multimatics and the front locker. And there are plenty around at that price. My local dealer has six at 49K. The TRD at 66K does not offer enough to justify that insane price.
After driving both, Toyota. The ZR2 with those 35's feel like a dog compared to the hybrid powertrain on the Pro, and all the gloss black in the interior ruins it for me.
Great review Kirk! Very thorough. The Chevy Colorado LT is high on my list to replace my Ford F150 that is in lease, especially since it’s 20k less than the Bison.
Among the Ranger Raptor, TRD Pro, and ZR2 Bison, I would say the Ranger Raptor is the best. They are all very expensive though, but the regular ZR2 makes the most sense.
In my opinion, the only thing the Bison could use is a bump in horsepower to compensate for the larger tires and extra weight from the bumpers/skids as well as stand out a bit more from the rest of the Colorado lineup. I find it odd that the Colorado version comes standard with hydraulic bump stops, but the canyon doesn't. Regardless, both are better looking and more capable than Tacoma.
I think I could’ve taken the base truck had it wrapped in yellow swapped out a couple seatbelts for the color.Slammed on the same exact wheels to match the incandescent bulb and plastic interior to get here. If you don’t like the set up underneath then you’ve wasted your money here. They should have put 40’s on it and made it slower. Tires and suspension alone do not a truck make.🎯 25:23
The Ranger Raptor seems like the best value for offroad focused mid-sized trucks. In fact, the Ranger lineup is the best value over from what I’ve seen. I’m interested to see the 2.7 ecoboost in the lower trim levels. I bet the a tune will put the 2.7 around 400hp in an XLT FX4. Either way, the mid-size market is way too expensive right now and isn’t the value it used to be.
Toyota built the Trailhunter by adding gadgets and doodads while Chevy gave us the ZR2 Bison with a front winch capable steel bumper, 35” tires/beedlock capable wheels, full steel underbody protection, and a front locker for the same price. I have the standard ZR2 and think it is the sweet spot though. I tow, off-road, and camp with it and it is a beast. Eventually I’ll cherry pick some parts off the bison to add to mine.
That's not how that works, but go on and believe a truck with almost half the torque, same hp, wildly worse transmission could do that. Frontiers also scored near the very bottom on reliability from JD and Consumers, the top was tacomas, colorado, and then a pretty steep drop to ranger and then an even bigger cliff down to frontiers. I also work on a lot of frontiers at the shop, they love blowing headgaskets, leaking coolant, and have the trans die from heat because of an abysmal stock cooler.
Mid size trucks that cost 65k should not be equipped with a shitty little 4 cylinder engine, this is a no go for me.....too much government regulation and it's killing the auto industry and hopefully manufactures lose lots of money!
I’m more of a Ford guy, but this looks cool, especially in that yellow.
The non bison ZR2 Colorado is is a great value for what you get for the price

You may have 35s but the TRD PRO has 2400 watts of power in case you want to go back to the future or power your overland fridge
Tacoma TRD Pro hybrid isn't tunable though as a non hybrid could. To get to the tunable version, you have to drop back to the 278hp SR5.
The Colorado sounds like someone wants to look cool and go nowhere. Curious how it goes off-road, but it’s not worth the price.

Kirk, The competition at the extreme ($$$) end of the mid-size pickup market is intense. In the middle, it is a cakewalk for Tacoma.
Tacoma is starting losing its dominance in the segment
Tacoma is way over priced "in the middle." TRD off-road is as much as a ZR2.
@rightlanehog3151• you are right
None of them touch the raptor ranger. These compete for 2nd place. Raptor is in a class of it own. However the zr2 does look good.
