The frig: 👎 The wire shelving: 👍👍👍 My share with you: In a recently watched video, you talked about not buying things you already have -- organizing so that you know what you have -- not falling into the rabbit hole of buying things because you saw a fun idea on You Tube. I was shopping at Dollar Tree -- didn't really need anything, but saw things I thought were cute -- I could hear you telling me I didn't really need them -- no place to store them and when would I get around to using them. I need that pep talk on a regular basis!! Thank you for all your inspiration.

I have a tip for board games. I put all the playing pieces in a plastic zipper bag. That fits well with your idea of storing them on their side. If the elastic were to break then you wouldn't have to pick up all the individual pieces should they fall out.

You are so right about storing vacuums, ironing boards, etc. My hall closet door is only 17 inches wide and the shelves inside...all 3 of them, are only 20 inches wide. 😂🤣 I can guarantee that someone, who never cooked or cleaned house, designed the floor plan for my house. 😁 There are 5 upper cabinets in my kitchen and they are 5 different widths! And no pantry, of course. It makes a lot of sense to use the hanging storage in the hall closet, so I'll try that next. Thanks for the great video and the inspiration. Also, you look gorgeous in that blouse.

Norrine, I couldn’t agree more about the non-functionality of the fridge storage containers. I would like to share my latest fridge organization idea. I am short and can’t often easily see what is on my top shelf, especially little containers and left overs; they get buried and I get frustrated trying to find and reach them. My daughter suggested I buy a Lazy Susan from IKEA for the fridge. Works so well! I put some non-stick shelf liner on it and now leftovers and misc containers get stored there. By spinning it I can easily see what is there. No more buried containers ending in wasted food! My daughter and husband now go to the Lazy Susan first when looking for left overs, a partial lemon , and various condiments. My 90 year old mother has recently put one in her fridge and also loves the functionality of it. (I am sure this is not a new idea, but is new to me and I love it!)

I really love your frugal attitude. Our planet is fragile and DIYers already use too much of aerosol-painting, plastic-deco, acrylic-painting, artificial plants etc...
When you mentioned "sorting by the colour in bathrooms", I just remember one deco-tip from decoration-channels, which are quite popular right now: "Sort books by colour or height". This drives me crazy, because it's so silly - books are made for reading not for deco...additionally those kids always place vases, planters or mugs on top of the books...that really kills me.

I had a set of face products for my teenaged daughter at one time. I put it all in one clear container so she could pull it out and complete the whole process each day. This brand came in a beautifully coordinated set. My sister came over one day and said she liked that I put all of one color in that container. It was not the color, but the products. Still, I liked the compliment.

I agree about the color coded fridge and bathroom. Makes no sense to me either. My favorite was the craft room with the steel shelving unit and the fold up table. Her items were easy to find, she had plenty of work space and storage on the shelves. The rug was a added bonus. My craft room has lovely wood cabinets and counter tops that hubby put in many years ago for me, but that lady's craft room still spoke to me. Love your blouse today, and you look so pretty in it.

Pretty much agree with you on everything. I had those metal shelves when it was a perfect solution in my apartment kitchen. They looked functional, were functional and also looked good. I still have them, but they are out in the barn being functional. We reuse canning jars from sauces, etc. for storing grains, dried fruit, nuts, etc. Certain brands come in better jars. I saved so many, I ended up chalk painting some and creating a center piece using a wine box covered in old book pages and lace. They can be changed out by the season. BTW Dollar tree has some black chalk board stickers in different shapes and sizes. I put those on a couple of jars and used the chalk marker to write in the contents. So cute! There are clear refrigerator boxes that come in different sizes. We use one in the door to hold condiments and keep them from falling through the too big space between the shelf and the containment bar. (Who made that design? A jar of mustard would slide right out if it weren't in the clear box!) We use one for holding cheese slices and other sandwich making items. We use another to hold random small left overs. And some others on bottom shelves that are so deep things can get lost. Thanks! And I agree with below - beautiful blouse!

I use fridge bins but, they're the produce keeper type with vents that open or close and a tray for a bit of water in the bottom. They actually work. I only go shopping every few weeks so keeping my produce fresher longer is important. Now, in the picture you showed the first thing that came to mind was: where are the leftovers? Then...how does the cold air circulate in there? How do they make Jello? I do have 2 acrylic bins in my kitchen freezer. It's one of those bottom freezer fridges. Everything was piled in there...the smaller stuff sifted to the bottom and was lost. 2 bins made 3 separate spaces so I can organize better. -- I repurposed 2 clear bins to the bathroom storage closet. If I roll them up I can stuff a lot of face cloths in a bin, turn it on its side for easy access and the cloths don't fall on the floor every time we open the closet door.

The only things I organize by color are my yarns and fabrics. I do actually have some of those clear bins in my fridge though. I bought two sizes and arranged them so they fill the top shelf with one each on the second and third shelf. They are full of bottles and jars, the things that end up wandering to the back of the fridge and get forgotten or need to be dug out often. I have them mostly grouped by "type" so ketchup, mustard, relish and things that get used similarly are in one, hot sauces and salsa in another, and so on. When I need something I can just pull out the bin to get the things in the back or take it right over to the counter or table. It's also a lot easier to clean up a spill in a bin than one that has dripped through all the shelves. By putting all those odd bottles into the bins and on the shelves I've also freed up most of the door storage for drinks and other "just grab one" types of items. I still have about two thirds of the shelf space available for things that will soon be meals and for leftovers.

Organising the fridge with lots of containers seems pointless and organising by colour is just not practical unless it’s coloured paper or card, etc. I’ve seen people organise books by colour and I don’t understand; I like to do it by category. Hi Norrine, I must confess that I finally broke down and bought Home Edit containers.....let me explain..... Home Edit now has their new line of sets with Walmart....an 8 piece set is about $25. Walmart also has similar off brands that can round out your storage space. My problem area is a pantry closet that is 23x23. I spent 3 years trying different baskets, turn tables etc....and I shopped my house to do it as I have several different sets of containers. After 3 years of dealing with this closet, I knew what I needed. I now have risers in the back of the shelves for my canned goods and turn tables in front. I did not color code the turn tables or bins. I put likes with likes. I also replaced my kitchen drawer organizers. I spent just under $200. I am very satisfied with the results and feel it was money well spent.

I do like using bins in the fridge for a few specific item (groups) and its mostly to keep from losing things in the back. I buy eggs in 5dz at a time and trying to justify getting rid of the garage fridge so I use plastic egg containers to re-cant my eggs. They lock shut and stack really well at the top/back of the fridge where nobody can really reach anyway =D. I used my cricut to label *departments* in my fridge and for the most part things get back where they go. It really helped everyone here improve habits - the simple guidance of some decals. I use cheap pop up hampers in my chest freezer to create *columns* for like items such as beef cuts/ ground beef/ chicken etc... They are very flexible and you can use all the space without winding up with complete chaos. I am a big fan of keeping things behind cabinet doors whenever possible, so I leave the bare minimum sitting out and have added cabinets where possible in my home. The only exception to that is my craft room, and that is just because it is a small space and quite honestly, cubbies were cheaper than cabinets. In this room I really LIKE seeing most of what I have at a glance because it inspires me to use my things. I don't want the same effect in my pantry though. My house did not have a pantry, but had a fairly wide hallway where the garage, guest bath and laundry doors are. We turned it into a sort of*butlers pantry* by using all upper cabinets on one wall and then a 5ft section of lowers/countertop/uppers across on the other side. We also did a wall of uppers in our small laundry room and it is great. If we need to move the washer and dryer out, we will need to unscrew a set of cabinets off the opposite wall to get the machines out the door, but it is totally worth it for the extra storage and it looks so much nicer too !

I use containers in my fridge but not the whole fridge. My fridge is one of those tiny under the counter ones so bending down is painful. I use the containers like drawers and just pull the container out the get what I need. But like you said, I need room for left overs so I have food storage containers that fit together and I can get 8 in max if there is nothing else in the fridge. Realistically I tend to have 4 and some veggies in the non container space. Plus it makes cleaning easier because I rinse my ‘drawers’ out each week and the shelves only need a wipe once a month. Any spills are in the containers so I don’t have to be bending down in pain. I agreed with all the other ones! My bottom shelf is actually arranged by height so the taller things go in the back and don’t block my view of the shorter things. I don’t understand color coding anywhere in my house. I have organizers in my fridge, but I haven't gone quite that far. I love the clear bins....I have two smaller bins for the condiments, and the larger bins I use for things like the condiments you get with take out..or the individual ranch cups, guacamole cups, etc...I have one for eggs, I have one for things like applesauce, or yogurts.. And one for left overs.. They are kind of like using a tray for the little things on your countertop, but for your fridge instead. I love being able to pull out the bins, and within a matter of min, the fridge is empty and easy to keep clean. My produce and meat go in the drawers. Nothing gets lost in the back, like they did before. I recently purchased a new fridge, as the one in the garage died....I couldn't bare to put it down in the garage, so I put it in the kitchen/dining area....In it, the first two shelves are for canned drinks. I bought the bins for cans...I love them. It's like having a vending machine. LOL. And these bins have tops, so if we get down to three or four cans, I can place those on top, and put another flavor in the bins. I try to keep them separate as I am diabetic and only drink the diet drinks, and my husband will not touch the diet, only wants regular. They work out great, and look nice too. I think the Home Edit, sorting by color, is overkill....especially when they are doing a pantry, and buy cereal to pick out a certain color so that it looks prettier....I'm sorry...I want my pantry to function. Yes, it want it to be organized and I want to find things quickly, but buying things just so that you can have a rainbow is crazy. LOL! I do like the clear containers for the pantry too...and eventually, I would like to change over to smaller clear bins, instead of the large black bins I have now. The larger bins tend to become more cluttered and it's hard to tell what you actually have.

The benefit of the fridge containers is that what’s at the back is readily accessible because you can just pull them out like a drawer! Mine don’t look like that but I love fridge containers and I have them on nearly every shelf. I even got one for my milk! I have to buy non dairy milk due to allergies and they come in half gallons. When I get a new one I pull out the container (a pop can dispenser without the lid and I use the lid as a separate sliding container) and add the new carton to the back so the freshest is up front. It’s just like containers in closets, it keeps things together and easy to reach the back. And some things it makes sense to decant because they take up less space and easier to store. I decant all nuts and have them in containers in the fridge. As far as “leftovers”, I don’t have any! I cook either single serving or a full recipe and portion it out into single servings and freeze the rest individually. Instead of a bunch of sizes of food containers I only have multiples of two different sizes for individual servings (I have 8 one cup and 6 two cup Pyrex containers with lids that can go in fridge, freezer, microwave or oven for cooking in batch and portioning out). Just like everywhere else you need to examine what you are storing to know what sizes you need. I have similar containers in nearly every upper cabinet in my kitchen. Yes there’s some spaces without them for flexibility, but I love them so much I keep adding more!

Most of my leftovers go in single servings into the freezer. That's where I keep pecans and walnut.... If I don't freezer leftovers, they start out in containers on bottom shelf of fridge. Each day they are moved up one shelf. If they make it to top shelf, they're either eaten that day or thrown out.

I totally agree with you about color organizing your fridge! So impractical! I do try to 'zone' my food, as it makes it much easier to find things easily! Our fridge doesn't have a drawer for storing meats so I grabbed a basket and that is where all of our deli meats and cheeses go. And of course, I have a separate tray on the bottom shelf where purchased meats go so that if they leak they don't contaminate other foods. As far as decanting goes, it depends on what it is! Dry pantry staples like rice and pasta I do decant, but to take individual servings out of a box to put in a bin, that is pure nonsense in my opinion. But then again, I don't have little ones (or teens) grabbing snacks and leaving the box on the counter!

I do think the fridge you showed was a bit over the top, but I have a few of those sorts of containers, because my fridge doesn't have enough shelves. The acrylic ones I have are actually drawers, so I can get to something without having to remove the containers on top. It also helps to stop stuff from getting pushed to the back and forgotten about and things don't fall out when I open the door. I haven't organised my fridge properly yet though, so I guess I'll find out if it works. By the way, that fridge is very much for a Bee. I imagine Lady bugs and Butterflies would have no idea why all the containers. But I would not have every container the same size - although the clear ones I just bought only came in one size that I've found so far. But I will have a few different types to choose from.

When I found squeeze bottles (mustard/ketchup style) 2 in a package at DT I stocked up. Beeeccaaauuuse…I decanted the bottles of dressing, sesame oil, olive oil, soy sauce, you name it - all into consistent size containers. Now I can set a single vertical height instead of having to lower a shelf to accommodate that one bottle that’s taller than the rest. Bins and color coded duct tape labels make it easier to find a specific one; salad dressing with blue tape, Asian spices with green, misc types of oil with red, etc. some decanting makes sense. But there are a lot of times it seems like the decanting is redundant. Like putting one thing in the sack at WalMart. If I have only one thing, I’ll just carry it, thank you. I saw where someone opened the butter cartons and put the sticks in a different container (open at the top mind you) and never did figure out the purpose for that.

Also, if someone in the household is color blind, it would not be pretty. I like simple & in reorganizing my kitchen, I've tried to evaluate & store everything by what I use most, less often & infrequently. It's taking time to put it together but for the first time since I moved into this house, I can find things.

Whilst I agree about the colour coordination thing (as pretty as it is) I do use fridge containers. Because of them I find I waste far less food, if any, and creating a shopping list is a breeze. The same for my pantry. It just suits the way my brain works - we are all so very different. For my house to stay clean and tidy (and for years I have struggled) I now have to have a place for everything (so containers of any shape and size help) and it has to be out of sight. If the container allotted to something is overflowing, something has to go. I used to love open shelving for storage and had lots of decor pieces, now my reaction is 😱. The important thing is, we do what makes us happy and what works for our lives as they are now.

Norinne, I am always put off by the books organized by color! My "library" is organized by genre, then alphabetically by author. I already had shelves full of my own, then inherited double that amount, so I had to figure something out. I read several books a month and loan out to family and friends so it revolves a lot and this method makes it easier for me to get it back to its proper place. I color code somewhat with paperwork file folders, like green for financial (money), red for urgent, etc. thats about it. great video!

I love those rolling shelves. I don't have any type of aesthetic, but I do something similar with the clear 3 drawer plastic bins from Walmart. I stack 2 on top of eachother and I have clothes inside them for each of my kids. Al the clothes are in the bins and stored in my room so the youngers kids can't get into them. The oldest child is 7, so she doesn't have a whole lot of clothing, nor doesany of the other kids. But we have 5 kids and only 2 bedrooms so these bins save space by stacking and not using a bulky dresser which would e way too short and too wide to hold clothes for even 1 child.

I have turned my below bench kitchen cupboards in drawers, fit so much more in them and the containers have the contents on the lids. I used the doors from these cupboards, turned them upside down so handles were at the bottom and had them attached to carcasses for overheads in my laundry, which is in the end of the garage. I also used two doors for wall mounted cupboards in each bathroom. Love everything behind doors, hate dusting! Yes, your blouse is very spring orientated and suits you.

On the refrigerator, incompletely agree with you on organizing by color BUT I invested in a set of acrylic fridge bins at Target, larger ones for leftovers & ingredients, three of the same size one for berries (we love berries) one for yogurt and other carton dairy, and one for me only. We bought a final blue basket for my husband's exclusive use. They work as organizing tools much like the deli drawer and the 2 produce drawers.. Now we have far less food waste because nothing gets pushed to the back of the fridge.

Glass jars are washed/sanitized & reused to store bags of dried beans or pasta, grains, chocolate chips, small bags/boxes of specilized sugars or flours, etc, etc. Keeps things fresher & the bugs out. I tape cooking directions to the outside or make a small roll to lay on top of the item so it's right there when I unscrew the lid.

I agree with you on just about everything, but the decanting beans and such wouldn't work for me as I have very limited cabinet space. I decant my 1 cereal because it comes in a large bag, then I still have to clothes pin shut the rest of the bag after I cut the excess top of the bag off. I have 1 box with lid kept on bottom cabinet that all the bags/variety of dried beans and peas goes into. I could go on and on, but without pictures wouldn't make much sense. Speaking of pics, I have only got to take 2 of my closet I was telling you about. Because I didn't have enough time and energy to empty out the entire contents to get better pics. I knew what was in each drawer so I didn't label them. A wire shelf was already there above the rod. I put the bulky containers up there. To the right I put an ironing board and iron holder on the wall. It had extra areas on the side that I could put spray starch and stain remover spray. The muddle had a collapsible wagon to haul groceries down the hallway or take clothes hampers to the laundry room. Add the mop and bucket, vacuum and step ladder and there you have it. I don't understand the containers in the fridge either! It just doesn't make sense to me. I have only a small fridge (lots of students have this size of fridge). I have trouble enough fitting things like a bag of mini carrots and some stalks of celery, a carton of eggs and a couple of jars of jam in my little fridge. Containers would be a complete waste of space! I like the shelf on wheels and the fold table -- I live in a house where I room and board. I have my supper with the family but prepare my breakfast and lunch in my space. It has a tiny kitchenette, there is a single sink, one cabinet with a shelf and three large drawers. That's it for storage. Even for one person I find this very limiting. I bought a small set of the wire shelves to provide some extra storage and that has helped, however I think I could be using some of the "bare wall" space, I just haven't figured out how to use it. Except for my bed in one corner, the rest of the room is devoted to my crafts. I have a U-shaped space for my sewiwgmachine, ironing table and cutting table. I have several IKEA Kallax shelf units and 2 bookcases. I know what I want the space to look like -- its not there yet. I think I need to hire a couple of strong teens to help me shove things around and put some order into the chaos!

Love that your crafting is the priority! It would be mine as well. :D

Organizing a refrigerator with containers is more for plant based or vegetarian eaters. There's just not enough room in fridge for all the fresh produce that we go through. It lets us stack more in and see what we have. It helps us rotate and use our produce easier.

    Great tips.
Some of these wouldn't work for me, as I hate open shelving. To me, it looks cluttered.
I love your blouse. It's really pretty.

I've seen the refrigerator organizing alot with the meal planning videos. I only have a few (4) so I can find some veggies ( I buy them and forget they are there. When I find the lettuce, its usually mushy and wilted) so they do help, but that picture was overload. Lol

I don't get the organizing by color. I've seen it done for a book shelf - that's obviously for people who don't actually read their books!

😜Yeah, the refrigerator thing wouldn’t work for me either. Like you said, the fridge contents are always changing… no reason to have that system. My favorite was the “skinny shelf.”

I saw a video where the refrigerator was organized by putting the vegetables and fruit at eye level. The bottom draw was full of meat that was going to be used quickly
