    I just purchased an MK6 GTI, and the roof structure is peeling in the same spots as your car! I visualized myself doing this exact procedure and thought, "It can't be that simple." you, sir, have given me the confidence to pull the trigger.

    Suggestion: If you use a sponge for a sanding block it will aid in avoiding sanding "hot spots" and your results will be superior compared to "free hand" Keep up the good work and God bless from SoCal USA

    I did my 350z after watching this video, 2000 grit worked fine for me, it took longer ofc because finer grade but no worries about going to deep.

    I did this to my Benz bumpers last year, in 2020 it was diff to get wetsand paper from local retailers so I started buying all I could get. I started with 400, 600, 1000, 2500. and two kinds of clearcoat. I did a few patches fine but waited to shop Amazon for everything I actually needed, dealt with the wait periods and listenes to lots of music on Spotify. Clearcoat quality seemed to be the real winner to saving money going DYI. Best to work in the early mornings or under well lit auto bays when windy. I also repainted my Benz rims from 2003 and they came out great until I just bought brand new aftermarket machined stunners with new wheels. The wait period post clearcoat is the worst thing about DYI.

    Thank you for the video. Would it make sense to start with 1000 grit paper and go up instead of 600-800 if youre trying to avoid base coat disturbance? I want to attempt to DIY but if I mess up the base coat that has me worried. Figured there would be no issue using finer paper and sanding longer/more to avoid base coat disturbances. Thank you in advance for any feedback

    • @matlock8314
      @matlock8314 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1000 grit also disturbs the base coat even if being careful. I hear some manufacturers use a single coat of base, so there's very little room to sand.

    It looks good for this old of a car. Looked like there was a bit of orange peel left over at the end of the video? Would sanding with 2000 or something between clear coats make it even better?

    I know this video is fairly old but it’s the first time I’ve watched it. Could you put a single coat of clear coat over the damaged part as the very first step, before sanding to simply protect the base paint when you start sanding? Would that have worked? To ensure you don’t scuff the base paint? Just wondering as I am going to attempt this on my own car and it’s a very similar situation…

      I'm thinking this is the way to go too, as at least it will protect the colour coat. After all, the aim is to fill the area of missing lacquer with more lacquer! The sanding is to remove excess lacquer from the original ,so the final finish is all one level. Also, I'm going to try an airline around the edges of the peeling area, to remove nay loose material. It may work, but has to be better than trying anything mechanical to remove the already-peeled lacquer

    Awesome video man really helped out! I have a red hyndai with peeling clear coat. Would you recommend ordering a color matched can and spraying a light coat after sanding or would i be okay with just clear coat?? Thanks again bro keep them coming🙌

    • @fatandhappykid
      @fatandhappykid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Awesome thanks for watching ,You could get a can of colour matched to your car to be on the safe side, but if you are gentle enough when sanding and the colour coat is fine then just a clear coat will be do.

      Most car dealerships have services that do touch up work like this. I found a guy in my area by asking at the local Chevy dealership. You may have to ask more than one dealership to get one of them to actually give you that information. Those repair guys usually work normal business hours Monday through Friday, if you get a chance during those hours you can find them by simply driving through a few different lots until you see them working. Just walk up and ask if they're interested in some side work. I had my bumper damaged and was quoted 1200.00 usd at a few body shops. The guy I found did it for 250 and you can not tell at all there was any damage. And that's with a tri coat pearlescent paint too. Just have to look a little, very much worth the time and effort. Good luck!

    I have three spots like this on my hood and one on passenger's door. Been to three auto paint "specialists" and all told me the whole part needs to be sprayed anew, like 600€ per part. Strip it off the old color and paint it again. And since the car is worth like three times the service they told me just to ignore it. All three of them. WTF? They didn't even try to scam me for new paintjob.
    I'm so fucking pissed right now. This is what? 40€ fix that I can do myself? I'd rather have specialist do it but it seems like I know more about it now then them? How is that possible?
