Bat Orphans

  • Trish Wimberley looks after hundreds of orphaned baby bats and rears them until they can be released into the wild. It's a tireless, never ending job which keeps her awake all hours (she apparently went 3 nights without sleeping once). A typical day may include feeding (the food is about $1000 a week), health checks, doing their laundry (the dryer and washing machine electricity bill costs up to $8000 every 3 or 4 months!), bat transportation for release -- everything they need in order to survive. You'd think she'd need an army of people to help but she makes do with only a few loyal volunteers. It just goes to show, motherhood can transcend between all species and Trish is happy playing that role to assist a creature that is vital to the Australian ecosystem.
This video only shows a small section of the hospital. As the bats get ready to return to the wild they are moved to soft release exhibits.
For more info on Trish & the work of the Australian bat clinic & wildlife trauma centre go here: australianbatclinic.com.au/
    or like them on Facebook
    pages/Austra...
    or perhaps email info@australianbatclinic.com.au
If you're a member of the public, remember never to touch or approach a bat unless you are a registered carer/rescuer and you are vaccinated. Wild bats do not like to be approached as they may see you as a potential predator.

I've always wondered if they would make great domestic pets. They're obviously pretty sweet animals here and they're entirely herbivorous. I wouldn't take them out of their natural environment just to raise them (unless they were in the same situation these cute little guys are) but it's still cool to think about.

Sour Cream i know this comment is old, but you can’t keep any type of bat as a pet. If will terrify them and they will be bored, they need to live in the wild. They’d die soooo quick if you kept one as a pet

I found one of these this morning, lying on the pavement. I thought it was dead, but it made a tiny squeal when I touched it. Once it realised I was a mammal, the little bugger wrapped it's arms and legs around my forearm and wouldn't let go.
So I came home and found lots of info online. It's a my local vet now, where some bat experts will come and pick it up.
It was amazing to see just how similar all mammals are with babies. My dog knew it was a baby and just wanted to lie next to the shoebox I put it in.
I used one of those little fish-shaped soy-sauce bottles as a makeshift nipple, and it drank about 5 of those full of milk in a row. Then it fell asleep.
They relax *instantly* when you wrap them as shown in this video. They love being wrapped up, which is counter-intuitive but that's how they travel under mum's wings.
    Now I'm sad I couldn't keep it.

It think vampire bats still tend to get the worst wrap. There are still people who believe the myth that they will attack humans and suck their blood. Of course, we all know that isn't true, and the only time a human would have to look out for them, is if one, or more, were showing signs of rabies.

Recent events have severely impacted the flying foxes. Here's a note from Trish at the Australian Bat Clinic:
URGENT HELP REQUESTED Jan 8th 2014
As many of you may have heard, tens of thousands of flying foxes in South East Queensland have died as a result of heat stress associated with extreme temperatures yesterday. Many thousands of flying fox pups have been orphaned and rescue groups from around the region are working tirelessly to rescue and save those we can at the many camps that were effected.
While rescue efforts continue, we are now in full swing stabilizing and rehabilitating the hundreds of orphans and many heat stressed adults coming into care. The Australian Bat Clinic has received over 220 orphaned flying foxes in the last 24 hours (taking our orphaned total to close to 400) and many more are expected to arrive at the center in the coming days.
We desperately need volunteers to help us with our 24 hour work load over the coming two months.
Both Vaccinated and Non-Vaccinated volunteers are needed with many roles needing to be filled - ranging from flying fox orphan feeding right through to making coffee so to keep our key staff awake!
(Relevant to Australian residents) If you are in the position to assist please send a message to the Australian Bat Clinic Facebook page with the following details:
    * Your name
    * Dates and hours that you can assist
    * Whether you are vaccinated or not
WE WILL CONTACT YOU TO CONFIRM ARRANGEMENTS - at this stage please don't call our center directly as guaranteed we will have our hands full and we are trying to keep our lines open for rescues.
Note - On-site accommodation options are available for those volunteering for 2 or more consecutive days.
If you are not in the position to volunteer you may wish to consider a monetary donation to assist us with our work (you should see our food bill!!!!!). Donations can be made via Paypal on our website www.australianbatclinic.com.au

OMGSH!!! How in the world did bats ever get such a horrible stigma??? THEY ARE ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God bless those goodhearted folks for saving these precious, li'l souls. Xx "A righteous man regards the life of animals" - PROVERBS 12:10; "If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion & pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men" - ST. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way." - MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.; "I hope to make people realize how totally helpless animals are, how dependent on us, trusting as a child must that we will be kind and take care of their needs... No, the stigma was there LONG before Hollywood. Bats used to be considered demonic

Since they are wild..shouldn't you cover their eyes when you feed them and not pet them so that they DON"T get used to humans? I've worked at a wildlife centre and that was an important point.
    Great video though!

KateB Hey Kate, that's not an issue for flying foxes. While they do bond with carers they much prefer the company of other bats so when they're released they stay with their colony.

Adam Cox But what if someone is rearing a baby bat in isolation? i.e. if a rescue that normally doesn't take in bats agreed to help a baby that couldn't survive on its own, and there was no one else who could or would do it. Do they still automatically form strong bonds with other bats after so much human interaction?

    • @Ricadamu
      @Ricadamu  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Well...the thing is flying foxes are highly social. They're not solitary so they need each other. If you're going to release bats you do it as a group. Humans and bats are both mammals but bats live in trees or the sky. It's natural for them to pursue that. They fly up to 80 kilometers a night. It's what they do. It's instinct. I believe an isolated bat would recognise it's own very quickly. It's a survival instinct. A solitary bat is more vulnerable.

+Privacy Lover It's not uncommon in a less catastrophic/chaotic baby season for individual carers to raise a baby bat in isolation or maybe with one other baby bat. Thing is, the carers don't raise the bat all the way to adulthood. When the babies get to a certain age the carer takes them to something called "creche" where the babies learn how to be big bats. Then they're gradually released.
What helps, too, is flying foxes don't imprint on their carers the way a goose would do. It makes them easier to transfer loyalties or whatever you want to call it.

HI I found small bat about one inch in my balcony and he is not moving and sleeping I found it is alive it gave small moves, I put some drop of milk next to him he had only one drop and change his face to other direction, It is cold I brought him inside and it is sleeping and not moving. I don't know what to do to rescue him also I am little bit scared of touching him. my husband is telling me don't bring him inside as it might bring infection but I don't want he dies outside I am not sure if I keep him in might his mother come in night to take him or no? can you tell me what to do. ?
