- There are countless ways for esports competitors to express themselves into immortality.
Whether it’s in the form of awe-inspiring no scopes, perfectly timed Aegis steals, expertly executed outplays or improvised moments of genius.
But perhaps the most visceral form of self-expression in all of competitive gaming, actually comes after the play itself; I’m talking, of course, about the pop-off.
Pop-offs can be elaborately planned performances, or off-the-cuff emotional releases. They can add exclamation points to emphatic victories, and in some cases, they can become bigger than the players themselves.
But when it comes to these occasionally over-the-top acts of victorious self-expression, perhaps no single game boasts a catalog thicker than Super Smash Bros Melee.
And chief among Melee’s pantheon of pop-off performers has to be none other than Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma - the ‘puff playing, grub-loving mad lad who has built a reputation for losing himself in the moment.

I was at Smash Con this year, and got to watch an unstressed Hbox set against a random wii fit player. The game went to game 3, and when Hbox won with a roll read rest. He popped off so hard on this teenager, he jumped like three feet in the air out of his chair, and then cheered loudly as he moved as far as he could with the crowd dispersing from around the set up. It was such a surreal moment, and it makes all of his popoffs that much better. He doesn’t do it for the camera, it’s not acting. He genuinely pops off incredibly hard when he wins, and I respect that. I respect Hbox for popping off after beating a teenager in round 2 pools

That was at GOML actually.
He's also one of the biggest voices in the scene trying to get legitimate attention drawn to smash from Nintendo. He wants the game to succeed more than anything, and it's from a place of passion. It's always nice to see someone work so hard for something they love.
Still the only Melee God to beat Reggie Fils-Amie in Smash.
Some might say it’s because he’s the only one who’s ever *played* Reggie, but that’s simply semantics.

Considering smash players (and fighting game players in general) are the owners of some of the most awkward pop-offs in history, it’s fun to see a man with as wide a range as Hbox. Some are powerful, some are awkward, some even become memes. But all are iconic.
…side note, it’s funny that every time they talked about people still hating on hbox it’s all Leffen, who’s generally one of the bigger jerks in the community

@@yankees2864 nah. I disagree. I've been watching competitive melee for almost a decade now, and I've been an hbox fan from the start. I thought puff was cool and enjoyed watching, but every time he'd win the entire chat would rage in anger. And people don't really talk about the complicity of the other pro players in encouraging that hatred. It's really not just Leffen and Mango. Even after the crab thing, most of them - while they said "that's bad don't do that" - I didn't see any of them take any responsibility in creating that toxicity. Even in the last summit after Mang0 lost to him he trash talked like he wouldn't anyone else. Even though things changed, watching him in the context of ultimate vs melee I can still feel the tension in the latter. I still see hatred in melee. It's less, but it still lingers, and if anything helped other than ultimate community - which didn't rush to judge him - it's the newer gods like Zain and IBDW who seem to genuinely like and respect him. I hope melee community grew up but honestly I think it's an issue of other top players and community leaders not really reflecting on their part in creating it. Just my two cents
@@yuvibitter I think I remember a clip of Armada talkking about how hated Hbox was and Im pretty sure that he was, even just a bit, taking the blame. I dont know for Leffen and Mango tho but I think that thing got better between Hbox and Mango.
I didnt know of hbox until the he hosted a multiversus tournament. Then I just went back to watch the doc on it. This channel is great. I'm not in the FGC community but the stories are as good as 30for30.

It's funny how badly the crab throw backfired on that Hbox hater. I've never liked Hbox as a player and always jokingly called him shit but even I thought that the crab was way too far. It's pretty funny but not acceptable behavior. Felt a little bad for him after that. I still don't root for him but my "hate" for him has died down quite a bit (and I think many people feel the same way)

The clip is really fine ... I'm following the Melee scene from very far and never understood why Hbox was so divisive. It seems to me he is taking constant shit for no reasons.

As a fighting game player and not a smash player, HBox is by far and away, hands down, not even close, my favorite smash player.
I'm not even a Smash fan and HBox is the only Smash player I like. The Melee community was just projecting when they say HBox is killing Melee.
One time at a sorta "special edition" of my local, like not quite enough to be considered a regional but more than a local, when I played melee during warmup/friendlies time before pools I played onstage on the stream setup. Everytime I won a game I popped off as close as I could to Hungrybox. Even replicating the fainting popoff to a tee, after literally practicing it at home. I fell to the ground to close the act and everyone lost their minds laughing. It was a true moment of passion among the community and I'm glad I could make everyone laugh.
Need I clarify: I asked everyone beforehand if they minded since I knew it would be loud. They all said they'd find it hilarious and to go for it. I didn't drive anyone crazy.

This normally isn't anything special but melee is super old. So for something to be "undiscovered" for so long is kind of crazy.
Yea it took like brawl came out to realize she was really good. But mango was the first top tier puff. Hbox just never switched mains and is now the top puff. He never left the pink ball

Melee community is what all parents fear their children will become when they start gaming.
I am not a fan of hbox really but I am a big fan of the hbox story line. He shows up as an underdog and gets cheered for, then he gets good and he is the disliked underdog but not hated. Then leffen enters the scene and makes hbox the most hated player (leffen is super toxic for the scene). Hbox becomes the best player in the world for a few years basically causing armada to retire. Hbox is still the most hated. Ultimate comes around and things change. Hbox gets new fans for ultimate and streaming. Those new fans get into melee because of hbox. Hbox slowly loses his touch with melee as Zain rises up. Covid happens. Zain takes over. Covid restrictions loosen up and your tournaments start to come back but hbox is clearly not at the top anymore. Hbox for the first time in 5+ years is getting cheered for. Hbox is again the underdog who can on occasion show us that he is worthy of being one of the 5 god's.
When I heard people cheering for hbox (I mean a large portion of the crowd not just a few people) in the last year or 2 I was blown away. I had seen people slowly start cheering for him in live chat if tournaments but hearing the crowd actually doing it was wild. I am really happy for the guy. He got way more hate than he deserved. Ask players that dislike his why they dislike him. They will get caught off guard. I think the only valid criticism is his play style and puff which is why I'm not a big fan. But he isn't a bad guy. There are only a couple of occasions I will cheer for hbox. It's if he is playing against leffen or ibdw and sometimes even zain. But I do like seeing hbox make it top 8. Just not top 4 unless the other members are the previously mentioned players. Then I'm cheering hard for the hgod.
My timeline might be slightly off but it's still mostly how it's gone down from my point of view.
The fact he was so fucking good even when he couldn't dedicate as much time as his competitors were to playing smash is stupid impressive.
