You can do both at the same time...
In the Starch Solution by John McDougall the basis of the diet is
    eating:
    1. Half a plate of non-starchy vegetables.
    2. Half a plate of starchy foods from tubers like potatoes and sweet
potatoes, from legumes and beans and/or from whole grains.
And fruit as dessert...eating nuts infrequently.
In Joel Fuhrman's nutritarian diet he recommends...
    1. 2 pounds of vegetables, half cooked and half raw including greens and
    mushrooms.
    2. 1-2 cups of beans
And a variety of other foods in his GBOMBS - greens, beans, onions,
    mushorooms, berries, nuts and seeds
    Furhman's diet recommends
30%-60% of calories from vegetables (those vegetables can include sweet
    potatoes)
    10%-40% of calories from fruit
10%-40% of calories from beans and legumes
20% or less of calories from whole grains and/or potatoes.
10%-40% of calories from seeds, nuts and/or avocados.
So you could definitely follow a McDougall diet if you were following
Fuhrman's nutritarian diet because McDougall classifies beans and
legumes as a starch source. The only difference would be actively eating
nuts and seeds as at least 10% of calories instead of eating them
sporadically. To put that in context that's ensuring you eat around 7
walnuts a day on a 2,000 calorie diet.
eg. half a plate of non starchy vegetables including some greens, mushrooms and raw onion
10%-30% of calories from sweet potato
20%-40% of calories from beans and legumes
    20% of calories from potatoes
fruit as dessert (10%-40% of calories) including some berries like blueberries or strawberries
10% of calories as nuts and seeds eg 7 whole walnuts a day.

I have lost over 45 pounds on Dr. Mcdougall's diet. Instead of berating a methodology of plant based eating, it may be good to have a better understanding of what the methodology is. I like nuts, and it's good to know I can include them in my diet. Dr. Mcdougall says if you want to lose weight faster, restrict fat more, and as you get to your ideal, add the nuts and seeds back in.

Why not eat a nutritarian starchivore diet. Oats with flax in the morning. Sweet potatoes. Tons of beans, greens, fruit, and a handful of unsalted walnuts. No need for a division. 🙏🏼🌱

It’s actually a psychological technique which causes the person to over explain as they are getting no emotional feedback from the interviewer.
Job interviewers use it often in order to determine if the person actually understands what they are talking about.

My daughter was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma two months ago. She has had 3 rounds of chemo. Two days ago she had a PET Scan. She was initially was stage 4. The report stated that her body had a complete Response to the first three rounds of chemo. They automatically attribute the vast resolution of her inflamed lymph nodes to the chemo drugs alone. Little did they know that my daughter has been on a plant based diet since the original diagnosis. She drinks at least 6 eight ounce glasses of cold pressed green vegetable juice. She also cut out her love of garbage processed food. She has few side effects because of the anti-toxic effect of the plant based diet. This shit works!!!!

Even now we still have to deal with the biases of some physicians who too often reluctantly treat Black patients, resulting in inferior health care. I find myself seeking solutions for my own medical issues, and wonder about the care of those who lack some of the knowledge I have. I thank Dr. Fuhrman for sharing his knowledge and wisdom with all of us!

I love the starch solution, I lost weight without being hungry but i could never understand why my depression and agoraphobia were not improving , meds weren't working etc... I started to put fat back into my diet with avocados and nuts...my mood improved immediately . I do believe we need some fats and i think the starch solution is a little restrictive on fats if you are prone to mood disorders. I think the nutritarian is the best way to go, even take a bit from both diets. The starch solution is definitely simpler and easier if you're a busy person. Nutritarian diet is a little more complex but definitely the more superior when it comes to getting every nutrient in nutrient. so my take is starch solution good for weight loss but not good for people with mood disorders. Nutritarian diet has it all but more time consuming.

I noticed the same thing! I never felt good on 'Starch Solution' or 'Forks Over Knives' - all those grains, carbs, cereals, potatoes, corn, bread, etc. I know that we need small amount of healthy omega 3 fats. We are not meant to eat zero-fat/low protein/high sugar starchy foods. The zero-fat doctors are aging so much faster than those who eat more greens than grains, etc. They look dramatically OLDER than Dr. Fuhrman. I like that Dr. Fuhrman leans more toward raw foods too, and diet strong in phytonutrients and anti-cancer/anti-heart/diabetes benefits.

I tried both, and both worked for me so now I combine them with one day having a nutritarian breakfast and dinner and a high carb lunch and then the next day a high carb breakfast and dinner and a nutritarian lunch. But I don't have all three meals just one approach on the same day. It works really well for me, stacks of energy, weight down, skin tightening, hormones feeling more balanced etc.I think I'm doing it right [for me] as when it comes down to it they're BOTH right and you just have to work out how to make it work best for you as we're all individuals. There are no 'wrong answers'! The only 'common denominator' I stick to is being WFPB.

Don't conflate being tolerant with what's best. It makes sense to eat some starchy veggies now and then, especially if you feel like you need them. But sweet potatoes, while quite delicious - and they go great with steamed greens, by the way - aren't nearly as nutritions as kale or mushrooms or onions. We need to understand micronutrient density and understand why that's the measure of the healhfullness of our diet and our likely longevity. There's no way a baked potato is as healthy as a large raw salad with a dressing made from fruit, nuts or seeds, and vinegar. A large salad with some baked potato put in is way better than a baked potato with a small salad. We need to know which direction to push. What the base of the diet should be.

Dr. Fuhrman is a man of EXCELLENCE. That dawned on me as I watched him speak. Everything he does, the knowledge he dispenses, even how he looks and dresses...everything ... bespeaks of a person who believes in excellence and lives it. The absolute best book I’ve ever read on fasting was written by him. I have hundreds of books, several on fasting, but his is the definitive book I pick up whenever I do a water fast. I’m toying with the idea of doing the Nutritarian diet. My concern is that it may be too restrictive for me, which is why (taste-wise) i chose Dr. McDougal’s high starch, low fat lifestyle a few years ago. I only stuck with it about 4-5 months. Not sure why I quit, because I liked it. In my heart of hearts, I believe the Nutritarian diet is probably the best one for overall health.

I have been vegetarian for over 30 years. I gave up sugar at the same time. Gradually I began to give up the foods that I noticed weren’t making me feel as good as the others such as wheat and dairy. Bottom line is I feel GREAT when I eat a lot of low starch vegetables! I mean SUPER CHARGED like Popeye and his spinach! Grains and starchy veggies tend to make me feel more sluggish and slow so I eat less of them. It took me a while to wrap my head around oil free. It was a big paradigm shift. But you know, I DO feel the difference. It’s subtle but my blood feels “cleaner.” I am still learning and I need community because I don’t have ANY friends who eat this way so I’m grateful for the inspiration and ideas your channel provides.

It's so important what he's pointing out here about detoxification. People try to eat healthy, feel horrible at day 3 and quit, saying I tried it and I felt terrible. They would do better to know from the outset and be prepared.

Wow Fast Food Genocide has to be a must read for me as someone who was raised in an urban neighborhood with Puerto-Rican parents doing the best they could my only vegetable was ketchup and once in awhile iceburg lettuce and a can of corn..when I visited Puerto Rico I discovered the taste of fresh fruits like guava, pineapple, tamarind and lots of mangoes! I ate root vegetables like yucca, taro and plantains and Floridian avocados.. came back here but it wasn't until things got better and educated myself that things got better, I was lucky and definitely grateful

PR has alot of healthy foods like plantains and green bananas, and lots of fruits. Yuca, on the other hand, is not so great in terms of micronutrients (cassava is very poor nutritionally). I still eat it sometimes, as it's good for just getting raw caloric energy, and a bit of potassium, but otherwise I think a potato is better.
I put tamarind pulp in smoothies all the time. Good stuff. As long as you stay away from fruit juices, fruits are good to eat.

Dillon, I am new to your channel and just started, about 3 weeks ago in earnest, a plant based diet. I didn't want to overwhelm myself with data and was interested in the Fuhrman book but got started reading the Starch Solution by MacDougall. I do a lot of of what Fuhrman says and about 3/4's of what MacDougall says. I want to thank you for sharing this, it has been a huge help! Also to chime in with another comment below, you are an excellent interviewer. Thank you so, so much for having this great channel and fascinating and fun information. Thanks for this interview. I ❤️ Dr Fuhrman, he is the best advertisement for his program, glowing and healthy. I think he has it right, bean, greens and nuts/seeds make all the difference. I can’t lose weight eating to much starch, the beans and nuts keep me full. Another point that I’ve never seen addressed by the starch people, they talk about starch based cultures, but don’t seem to add that all of those cultures include a lot of beans along with the rice, potatoes and bread. His GBOMBS and IF are helping me get to my ideal weight and health goals.

We need some more gardens in economically depressed northern urban cities. Whatever condemned buildings can be torn down or gardened around if there are lots. Or the common grounds in the apartment complexes. There's lots of people, plenty of run off from hard surfaces - roofs / parking lots, plenty of protection - brick walls. Plenty of waste for composting. We could cram in a bunch. Definitely can do it in little houses with little lots - share with the neighborhood. Empower the people to take care of themselves health wise and financially then deal with education and job problems.

Fuhrman's rap, to me, makes the most sense of any of the doctors who promote a plant-based diet ... because he explains the process of digestion and is not a total fanatic about what to eat. GBOMBS makes so much sense.
He said around 6:20 that eating this way can reverse many early stage cancers. I'd love to know the source of that data and how that would work.

they have debated a lot. I saved a you tube video where they are both on a panel and an audience member instigates a renewal. my conclusion is that it is like different sects of the same religion. I feel mcdougall is speaking to more people and will reach more whereas fuhrman will help the strict ones have more optimal health. but this is assuming stress of food is not part of it and rice eaters are eating brown rice on the other side. it gets pretty nit picky between them. bottom line is eat plantts, especially the super ones and don't eat animal products. ones health can always be more optimal and our differences will dictate who we follow more, but bottom line is the same.

I find that the Fuhrman method of eating works the best for me. When I focus on starches I become sick and food obsessed. My body does much better with beans as the starch and lots of vegetables and fruits. I can't eat white potatoes as a main course. As a person who has a life long food addiction, overthinking every single thing about nutrients and certain food combinations makes me insane! I just know that if eat salad/greens before my meal of starch/legumes and non starchy vegetables, I feel better and lose weight. If I start eating nuts, avocadoes and seeds, maybe I might get carried away, so I omit those for now while I deal with my food addiction. White potatoes are the centre of my diet, because I've been doing the Spudfit challenge and I'm sensitive to too many sweet potatoes (they make me have diarrhea and cramping). If Andrew Taylor can reverse his depression and morbid obesity by eating only potatoes for a year (mostly white spuds and no green veg), I think I'll be fine.
Me personally, I will do Maximum Weight Loss or Chef AJs Ultimate Weight Loss program style of eating until I get to my goal. I will reassess whether or not to transition to Dr. Fuhrman's approach or Dr. Gregor's Daily Dozen. Until then, I won't "Major In Minor Things" and I'll simplify simplify simplify.
If you had an alcohol addiction and you were told that in order to be successful, you had to not only give up alcohol, but you had to take this and that supplememt, and eat this specific food combination to get the best results, along with a bunch of other specifics, you would be overwhelmed and get side tracked. I'm basically saying, the solution to reversing disease and imbalance is simpler than these very specific instructions.

      @WellYourWorld  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @yawnaisian
      @yawnaisian 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Sounds like you're making it way too hard.
      Start with WFPB.
Try to incorporate GBOMBS foods and maybe Dr. Greger's daily dozen when you can.
You won't die if you miss something on a checklist one day. Your body has stores of fats, proteins, glycogen, minerals, and vitamins....
People are even able to undergo prolonged medically supervised water fasts because of those stores.
Also, ANDI scores can maybe help you choose more nutritional bang for your buck.
If you read doctor Fuhrman's books (free from any library and on hoopla) , he has all kinds of fun ways to incorporate nuts into dressings... so you're not overeating them and incorporating them in fun ways while maximizing nutrient absorption.
Have fun and don't stress about it.
Dr. Fuhrman and Dr. Greger have some great fun recipe ideas...
      All the best! ✌🙏

  • @adamfiore7736
    @adamfiore7736 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If you really look into both Furhman & McDougall diets they are really very similar. Remember McDougall’s perfect dish is brown rice, beans and broccoli OR sweet potatoes and broccoli, it’s not just pure rice & potatoes. McDougall is just emphasizing that starch is our base and so is Furhman in a way (beans and grains are starch remember but his food pyramids base is Greens). I do like that Furhman is advocating for low glycemic index/load foods which is very smart and healthy recommendation. Furhman is just advocating for more wide varieties of nutrients like greens, nuts/seeds, raw onions, mushrooms etc which can only help you get more nutrients. My only advice would be to still watch you overall daily macronutrient content, especially fat. You really never want to go over 15% of your daily caloric intake in fat regardless the source. The one thing Furhman never says is a macronutrient level cutoff amount of daily fat, I’m curious to see his daily fat recommendation bc every video he has there seems to be no cap 🤔... aside from this his diet is A1+. Remember, if you eat quinoa for example or steel cut oats, they have a lot of natural fat, even a banana has fat. Foods have natural fat in them so you can naturally absorb the fat soluble vitamins/minerals, eating a couple nuts and seeds will/could help (especially vit E, omegas, DHA) but what’s the cutoff... my cutoff is around 15% total fat from total caloric intake for the day. If you really track your macros and look at the nutritional values of everything you eat you will see there’s not a lot of room for nuts and seeds anyways, so less fat is more. Not to mention, when you eat fatty carbs like some grains there’s really no room for extra added nuts/seed/avocados/coconut. Oil is deff deff definitely a no no (everyone agrees on this). I used to eat 2 kind bars a day 🤦‍♂️ that’s like a week worth of fat lol. This was before I tracked my macros, I understand that there’s fiber but why does my weight go up when I increase natural whole plant based fats like what Furhman suggests (not in the toilet). Does anyone know what Furhman’s suggested daily fat intake levels are... there must be a percentage?

    • @adamfiore7736
      @adamfiore7736 5 ปีที่แล้ว

It you want to eat more nuts, seeds, avocado, coconut you must counter that by eating less fatty grains and starches like rice and potatoes (they’re basically fatless starches/polysaccharides). Most other grains are fatty leaving no extra room for unregulated nuts and seeds. You must regulate and monitor your daily fat intake not just nuts, seeds, avocado, coconut... but everything you eat. If you want to eat nuts, seeds, avocado, coconut which you should you must counter by eating more lean grains. Don’t go over 15% of your daily caloric intake in fat. Mind you all of these doctors are advocating for the same thing... whole food plant/starch based with Low Fat no concentrates or processing. Furhman just seems to have no cap on fat 🧐
I just ate break-fast and it was raw grains cereal with frozen blueberries and soy milk. The grains had about 3 grams of fat and the soy milk had about 9 grams of fat, that’s 12 grams of fat... everything has fat, if I had added nuts and seeds it would be to fatty.... maybe almond milk would be better or another plant milk with lower fat if I wanted to add nuts and seeds. Hopefully you see where I’m getting at, fat adds up quick and it’s naturally in our plant based foods. Eat nuts, seeds, avocado, coconut sparingly - Allspeed!

The problem of eating too much starch comes due to the fact that people eat them in cooked form. How many people can eat raw potato and how much one can eat a cooked potato? One may be able to eat raw Yam potato, but not in a large quantity. In the same way, raw nuts and seed cannot be eaten in a very large quantity. As long as you try to eat food in Raw Form or close to Raw Form (such as lightly steamed) and without adding any unhealthy condiments, you will eat in proper quantity.

Thank God for Dr.s like Dr. Furman that are proclaiming the truth about the SAD diet and the true diet!!!

I like both. I am however newly transitioning off of the SAD diet (i was legit eating KFC every day 😰) and so far the Starch Solution is the best thing i have found in helping me transition into plant based eating and at home cooking. I figure i will stick with Starch Solution until i am really used to and thriving on a plant based diet and then eventually I'll do more nutritarian. I think jumping from SAD to nutritarian is a bit overwhelming but if you have been whole plant foods for a while its much more doable. Both have their place and work together i think. But I'm just an average person not a doctor.

Question: Why is it that older rural Chinese who ate a diet of 90% white rice lived long healthy lives mostly free of disease and almost no cancer or hear disease.

It could be more about avoiding damaging foods than to seek out extra nutrition. I'm sure some extra nutrition helps but up to a point.

Can anyone explain how “true hunger“ is felt in the neck and throat (as Dr. Fuhrman says in this interview) and not in the stomach/intestines/belly? When I consulted with Dr. Klaper, I believe he said that “stomach hunger“ may have more to do with the microbiome as opposed to “true hunger” and indicated something similar regarding true hunger being felt in the neck and throat. They are the only two doctors who I’ve ever heard this concept from.

This is a common thread within the fasting community as well. I have fasted twice and I still am not absolutely sure I am fluent enough with this sensation, so I cannot answer well. But it seems to be consistent. I have heard it from Goldhamer, Klaper, Fuhrman...

I've done quite a bit of intermittent fasting (up to 24 hours) over the last 3 years, and also a 12 day fast at TrueNorth, and I'm also unsure of this sensation. During my 12 day fast my whole body felt hungry. lol

I know these comments are older, but I saw an interview or talk by Dr. Fuhrman on TH-cam where he clarified the "true hunger in the throat". He said you begin salivating. It was a pretty simple explanation and easily understood. I know my dogs begin salivating / drooling if they see I have something yummy to eat. But if they've already been fed, they still show interest but they aren't drooling all over the darn place. ;) Fuhrman is implying it is the same in humans. We salivate when truly hungry.

While on a 14 day water fast I felt it in my throat and mouth. Watery mouth, I guess like I was going to eat something fabulous and my juices were flowing. Mind you I was studying up on new recipes to get ready for refeeding, lol.

Where does Dr. Fuhrman propose that lower income people could get the money needed to purchase less processed food that he cites in the nutritarian diet? Many poor folks live in areas without a grocery store; just convenience type stores. What are they to do?
